Thanks for making this thread, i think this topic is really worth the discussion.

As for my view:

I don't really agree with the argument, that as a part of the league the champions match should follow the same rules as the normal matches. The regular league is already over for everyone at that time and the winner of the A division could just be the winner of the league as a whole without an extra match. To me the match is supposed to be different from the normal matches.

I loved submitting kingdoms and i loved playtesting kingdoms (when i didn't submit any).
For my personal viewing experience i think pre-designed kingdoms make it more interesting.
Creating boards with new and fun interactions is quite a joy for me and many others so i love that the league gives a regular opportunity to submit those and maybe seeing them played out by top players.
But i do very much understand some of the concerns with the current system.
Some of the very "interesting" kingdoms that involve for example mechanics like top-deck interactionsand games where the slightest ordering mistake could win or lose you the game tend to be very time consuming. I agree that this can majorly decrease the fun in wieving and playing.
Thus I'd strongly advise to not put more than one of those kingdoms into a championship match. The time factor clearly matters. There are still lot's of engine boards that play out rather fast.
As for Boards with different competing strategies: I really enjoyed championship games where where the competitors went completely different paths and to see how it turned out. (Usually being Mic going for a Big money approach, while Stef was trying to get an engine with a huge catchup potential going fast enough) but this can be very annoying if it's an engine that plays out very slowly, so almoast all of the time is taken by the turns of the engine player and in the end the engine often only overcomes the early lead of the other strategies by continuously being able to kill its opponents turns almoast entirely with strong attacks.
This isn't very much fun to play as the non-engine player and not really much fun to watch either.

I agree that having some random boards mixed in aswell could make for more diversity and sometimes there are just not that many submissions that the playtesters really like.
I wouldn't really want to watch completely dull games in the championship match, but banning certain cards isn't a good solution to this and pre-judging of random boards to rule out the dulls can be difficult to do in an appropriate manner since everyone has their own standarts of when is a board too one-sided boring to be accepted for the match. So with random boards i would actually just leave them completely random. With all the expensions out there complete dulls are less and less likely  and if there happens to be one in the CM then the players and viewers would survive that in my opinion.

Lets's summarize what we want to achieve:
-an interesting Series that can be tense until the end
-a fair way to reward excellent in-season results (not dominating over 30 games and then not winning the season due to bad luck in a single match)
-diversity in competitors in the CM over the seasons

i think the only way to achieve both of the above things is to undock the CM from the Season, like the Champion/Challenger ,
"King of the Hill"-type of competition.
If you also want more diversity in players playing in the CM maybe make it a random selection of one of the players, with a distribution based on the seasons results in division A
Example (Number of points earned / 90)= chance of being chosen as "challenger"
And not to take anything away from Winning the Season as it's own thing and as the bigger achievement overall.

I think the whole point of the Championship Match is on one side to have a special event for the audience and on the other side to be an extra reward for getting first or second in the A division. All other divisions have the big "first place gets to play in a higher division next season" point, but it doesn't get higher than A. So i think playing in the CM in front of a bigger audience than usual is kind of that for the A division. Yes, winning in the group phase should give you a significant advantage, but going in with a 5-1 lead or even an unbeatable lead takes away the whole purpose. Less people would want to watch a match where the winner is already predecided and so it also lessens the reward of playing in such a CM.
But that is only my thought. I would like to hear from other A division players what their opinion on that is (specifically if playing in the CM feels like a reward in itself)

I like the idea of the leading player being one game up. There should be a significant advantage for winning the group, like there is in all groups (place 1 promoting and place 2 not, independant on how close the scores are) but like you said the game should not be predecided.

Game 1 you had so much money in your deck and a lot of platina, you should have just taken any chance to apprentice platinum in order to get multiple buy turns with your candlestick makers. Having 2 apprentices instead of 1 was your only advantage and it is a big one.

Hi!

I'd like to return.

Last season played: 3(?) Division C
Goko name: MarkowKette
Time zone: Europe/Berlin

I would love to try guest commentating for a game or two of the finals.
I'm probably not entertaining enough to be the funny guy, but discussing possible strategies before the game starts and pointing out interesting decisions in the gameplay are among the things i love most in dominion.

Serf $2 – Action-Attack
+1 Card
+1 Action
Reveal a card from your hand and put it on top of your deck.  Each other player with five or more cards in his hand discards a copy of that card (or reveals a hand with no copies of that card in it).

I think this is fine, but you should make it a "may" or you might often run into situations where you dont even want to play it.
Also if it turns out to be too weak you could make it a choice between "you topdeck, the others discart" and "you discart, the others topdeck", might be too strong then at $2 though.

Death cart got done wrong, easily a top 20 card.
i really have to agree. I think the picture delivers a really good impression of what it depicts.

Game 1: Interesting question what to do here, i think i would have tried out the poorhouse-focused Herald engine with early 2 or 3 foragers (maybe with a few caravans and 1-2 market squares) But Jack-Forager is really strong on its own, would probably be close at least.

Game 2: if i were you in turn 2 i would have changed my strategy to a gardens strategy. Get lots of pawns only use remake to upgrade the shelters into pawns and to get rid of ruins and get 1 or 2 Counting houses to spike some provinces with all the extra coppers you can buy.

Game 3: nothing to do here :)

Game 4: definitely village over mystic. Without the village you will only be able to use your outpost half of the time.

Game 5: Not much to say. Well played.

Game 6: Fools Gold is just horrible here. But i'm pretty sure in a Duchy/Duke Mirror your strategy would lose to anything focused.
Why do you need Golds when you play Dukes? Silvers are almoast as good at getting you to $5. I would open Trader/Silver and only if i luck into $6 before the third shuffle (until turn 6?) i would get the Hoard. I'd just start buying Duchies from turn 3 on. You had a lot of $7-10 hands that is much more appropriate for a pure Province strategy which contests Duchies.(and don't get me wrong, that is certainly not a bad option and has a chance to beat the best possible pure Duke Strategy)
Trader isn't the best support for Dukes, but generally pure Duke strategies should start buying Duchies pretty early.

I bet Celestial Charmeleon would easily find a way to end the game by turn 2 if you can rearrange your cards each time you draw a card (in opposition to "only" assume perfect shuffle luck) :)

General Discussion / Re: Dota 2
« on: July 25, 2014, 08:53:16 am »
I used to play a lot of HoN. I tried out Dota2 and liked HoN more because it's faster paced and i liked the laning mechanics and gameplay more.
Now that i returned most of my friends stopped playing and i hate playing random match making because there is so much flaming going on and people ruining
the teamplay just to piss off their teammates that they don't like. I cant imagine this being worse in any other moba. So right now i'm considering to switch to Dota2.

As far as i know this was not a foul on Neuer, by modern refereeing standards. Though, perhaps said standards allow goalkeepers far too much leeway.
The referee didn't have the best performance this game but we saw a lot far worse performances in the world cup.
I think the wrong decisions kind of evened up in this game and in the end obviously commentators from each side believe their teams in a disadvatage there (like the german commentator claimed a penalty for the tackle against Kramer and wanted to see second yellow cards against Mascherano and Aguero and didn't really mention most of the wrong decisions in germany's favor)

It was a really good and very fast match with both teams fighting very hard. Argentina deserves a lot of respect for their performance.
In the end Germany had the lucky shot on their side and that's what decides such a close and even match which could have gone either way.

21
Very happy with the result obviously. Argentina played well too.

What does everyone think about Neuer's foul that was given to Higuain instead ? Lots of comparisons to Schumacher in '82 going on here (then again I'm not sure anyone beside us even remember that).

Well obviously it was no foul from Higuain. Neuer played the ball before he crashed into the player so i think the ref could have decided either way foul or not.
It was a game with lot's of fouls on both sides though, but i guess that is understandable in regard of what it's all about.
I think Argentina played their best game of this tournament and they would have also deserved to win.

22
I guess we are the new Germany and Germany is the new Netherlands.

The Germany from 98' ?
Netherlands definitely played better than that.

23
I just realized when comparing our top22 teams there are exactly 11 players in common for all of us that at least one of us didn't bench.

This final 11 would look a little weird as there are two keepers in it, but i guess Neuer does fine on a Libero position ;)

24
my World Cup Allstars looks like this

Neuer
Höwedes - Hummels - Thiago Silva - Varane
Mascherano- Kroos - Cuadrado
Robben - Messi - Neymar

Bench: (Navas/Ochoa) - Lahm , Rojo , Van buyten, Vlaar - Valbuena, Khedira, James Rodriguez, Müller - Benzema, Alexis Sanchez

25
I think 0:0 was a deserved result after 120mins. Argentina had slightly more and slightly better chances so they deserved to win.
But i agree that the Netherlands played a better tournament so far so i was still rooting for them and if they won it wouldn't have been undeservingly.
France was actually my favourite to win the world cup.

Germany-Argentina will be a very tough and tactical final i would be astonished if we see 3 or more goals in the regular time,
but well i guess i will never be able to be more astonished than after this semi final yesterday. And after that game i certainly have to favor our national team for the final.
