Dominion General Discussion / Re: Bane
« on: January 07, 2022, 02:35:54 pm »
Hi me from the past.  I literally just googled "dominion bane" because I am playing in real life at Magfest, and found the answer here.  rrenaud, such a homey.

There is a new character that just got released on steam.  She has this weird/fun stance switching mechanic, where she changes from very defensive to very offensive.

Anyone feel that, as brilliant as StS is, it's not quite as clean and well designed as Dominion?

The hand size limit seems a little annoying, though there is no played pile, so it's maybe needed to prevent infinite turns?

The stacking of Echo Form (The first card you play each turn is played twice) is simply wrong as worded.  A second echo form makes you play your second card twice, instead of your first card three times.

I played slay the spire for approximately 15 of the last 30 hours.  No joke.  Never binged a game so hard

FWIW, if you are in/visiting NYC, there is now a free play cabinent at reclamation bar in williamsburg.

General Discussion / Any of you ever go to magfest?
« on: January 10, 2017, 03:07:43 pm »
I went this weekend and it was super fun.  All kinds of gamer nerds show up.  So many games.  So much fun.

http://magfest.org/

I'd highly recommend it if you are in the vague vicinity of Washington DC.

This is an entry level software engineer position:

https://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/Google-Software-Engineer-II-San-Jose-Salaries-EJI_IE9079.0,6_KO7,27_IL.28,36_IM761.htm

Glassdoor says 144k in total comp.  I assure you that glassdoor is always a little low, maybe because they include multiple trailing years without accounting for growth.

From a quantitative perspective also, I think Donald is certainly competitive enough to be hired as a software engineer. For a senior position say he can make 200K a year at that job.

Whaa? Where does that number come from? Without moving into management type roles, or perhaps one some super-rare technologies for which there's only a handful of experts in that field, it's more like $125K tops. The other exception might be working as a consultant for hourly rates, in which case you might get close to 200K (though with no benefits or anything).

200k/year is low, not high.  I'd say total compensation for a software engineer their first year out of undergrad at Google or FB in the bay area would be around $160k/year.

I personally think it's fine for DVX to provide nothing more than a "sorry, I overpromised, but I honestly believed those things at the time."  And that Stef/SCSN give away any kind of grand-fathered subscription is extremely generous.  AFAICT, they don't get anything for that.

All the while, I am still pretty sympathic to chris martin.

We had a sticker at work next to the machine, rules for the queen

1) don't die
2) get gates

when a queen died, especially to quickly, we'd always taunt him (her?) with the note.

Here is a good 2 minute blurb about the game:

If anyone lives near a machine, I'd recommend getting a few friends and playing together.  http://killerqueenarcade.com/locations/

If anyone is in/near NYC and wants to learn, I'd happily teach some noobs and burn some cash at the Chinatown arcade.

Goko +salvager is better than iso was?

I'd throw in $1000 for a return of dominion isotropic, which requires MF or Goko authorization credentials to play.

I have a vague memory of a multiplayer IRL game where the only +buy was salvager, and I was drawing my deck every turn.  I was happy when I got some curses, otherwise I'd have to trash something useful to get the +buy.  Seems like the same story.

I think the next turn I just 3 piled for the win, putting my opponents out of their misery.

So I played a 3p face to face game of Dominion yesterday.  Key cards in the kingdom were Upgrade, Scrying Pool, Steward, Conspirator, Herbalist, and some source of actions.

So I trash my deck down so that I can draw it all up.  On the second turn that I draw my whole deck, I am like yeah, I need more monies!  So I upgrade my Herbalists to Stewards.  More monies, yay! Then at the end of the turn I have $22 and 1 buy.

Just add your location.

Just add your location.  I picked the hefe because it's basically the only German style worth drinking ;P.  https://www.beermenus.com/beers/paulaner-hefe [Okay, dunkelweizens are okay too, as not crappy imitations of hefes ;) ]

« on: February 24, 2015, 02:16:23 am »
I think both race and dominion have a moderate amount of luck involved and both have a ton of depth/return for experience.  If you have some reasonable empirical definition of luck (computable from the outcomes of game logs), I might be tempted to crunch the numbers.  I've won 6 of the 8 face to face race tournaments I've entered, and they've all been multiplayer.  One of those tournaments only had 30 players, every other had more than 70.

Getting good is orthogonal to getting lucky.

Good players win a lot in the long run.  Lucky players don't really exist in the long run.

Once you become decent (say, better than the AI), I'll happily play a bunch of Keldon against you.  Send me and gmail message/email when you want to play, rrenaud@gmail.com

Maybe we should take the best strategy post each month on the forum and throw it up on the DS front page?

23
Maybe you should get better peer reviewers? :)

Great job with this!

FWIW, I wouldn't take criticisms as offenses, but more like challenges.  Can I make the explanation better/clearer?  Is there another analysis that can demonstrate the same point without the noted problems?

But of course, only do it so much as you enjoy it.

In my 8 games of experience, the problem I have with dead of winter is that the presence of a betrayer strongly determines the outcome of the game.  I've never won a game with a betrayer present.   I frequently win when there are none present.

You are young (presumably?).  Pick the 80/20 allocation here.

http://www.bogleheads.org/blog/the-three-fund-portfolio/

Then move on with your life, and spend time doing fun things, like playing Dominion or brewing beer, rather than worrying about the stock market.

Periodically (once per 6 months, say, or incrementally as your bank account gets too big) rebalance your portfolio to make sure you stay at those 80/20 ratios.
