Game Reports / Re: Finally went pro...I lost.

Geez, It's that good?

I got a lot to learn. I didn't know about that combo, and a week or two back missed the bishop/fortress golden deck.

I must look like an idiot =)

Dude.  You have no idea what kind of idiocy we've all pulled!  Even now most of us still make bonehead suboptimal plays.  The important thing is that you're figuring this stuff out now :)

But yes, Ambassador is glorious with Tournament for three reasons:

1) It improves the chance of your own Tournament collision by shrinking your deck;
2) It lowers the chance of their Tournament collision by bloating their deck;
3) The two can't be 'drawn dead' together because Tournament gives +1 Action.

Well, I didn't say I was an idiot, just that I look like one. =)

I've read the articles, I've watched videos, but it's like when I tried to improve my chess game. Reading those diagrams and notes and famous old games didn't help one bit.  For some reason I couldn't get the new stuff into my head.

That's what's happening here.  I read the articles and watch the videos, and I understand them.  But when it comes to time to play, it's all gone, and all I have left is the kingdom in front of me, and an opponent I hope doesn't get too angry at me for playing dumb.

Everything you say about amb/tourn sounds good and makes a lot of sense, but when I sit at the table...nothing. I guess I just learn differently.  If I had the time to dedicate to playing multiple games per day against live opponents, I'm sure I would improve much more quickly. But I can't.  It's gonna be a slow crawl (and doesn't the rating system punish you for not playing every day?)

Hey, if there's money to be made, sign me up!

I may be terrible at it, but at least I'm consistent!

See that's the kind of thing I'm talking about. I usually open silver because if I don't, I seem to fall behind even faster.

I really need practice in seeing all of the connections before I start, but don't know how to improve that skill.

No commentary?

I've got a long way to go to get good at this, and I was really hoping someone would give me something to work with. I'll never make it to the top of the charts (I don't play that often), but I gotta get up out of the 300's.

...you guys have no idea how tough it was for me to try a pro game and then chat about it here.  I have this thing usually about playing online with strangers (silly, I know, but there it is).

But I did better than I expected, I thought I had a chance right up until the end.

Non-Mafia Game Threads / Re: Introduction, Sign-ups, etc:
« on: February 22, 2014, 10:09:20 am »
I've been a member here at f.DS for several months now, and for some reason ignored the games forum because I thought they were all of them just some variant of Werewolf...Shoulda checked the non-mafia section at least once by now.

But, I have now corrected that mistake and here I am!  It is so cool that this is here. I was going to set up for some friends of mine a few PbP games, even got as far as setting up a forum to do it on, and then it died from lack of interest.  So I went looking for a place to join of the games I was going to mod.  I wound up here, too cool.

Ok, enough with the hyperbole.  I would like to play a game.  I have several here at the house, but came specifically looking for Battlestar Galactica. <===this is currently my first choice

I would also like to play Twilight Imperium 3, if someone figured out a way to mod it.
I'm also up for The Resistance, Long Live the King, and Settlers of Catan (again, assuming someone could Mod them).

Actually, I would be up for anything, but I don't own most games, so I would need access to rules before I comitted (which is easy, since most places post pdf's of their rulebooks as a way to lure in fence-sitters)

Didn't know about the golden deck, but that is why I bought the pair, I saw they'd work well together. At the same time, I bought the watchtower so I could grab a gold when I trashed it...only afterwards realizing that I mixed it up with another card.

It may have only been against a bot, but I am so jazzed about this one. I nearly gave up early, but decided to stick it out.

On one turn I processioned Hunting Grounds, turning it into a King's Court, and then later did it again, getting bank.
Not to be That Guy but Procession only gains action cards...

You're right.  It's been several days since that game. I probably didn't get bank that way.  Certainly, I did get the first King's Court with it, though.

I don't have a log as it was a live game, but I managed to eke out a win last week with procession.  Yeah, the kingdom had fortress in it, and I did take advantage of it, but it was a random kingdom. On one turn I processioned Hunting Grounds, turning it into a King's Court, and then later did it again, getting bank. Near the end I pulled off a turn drawing all but 5 cards of my deck (which I knew were green cards anyway, we had warehouses), but only managed a double provinces.  Of course, trashing Hunting grounds in this way netted me a couple of free duchies, which was just enough to pull the win.

I almost feel sorry for the new guy...almost. He went big money and almost pulled it off.

You're not supposed to use your real password for that site. Just make something up and remember it for next time you want to log in.

I'm thinking maybe that should be spelled out on the site, that will stop people coming over here to find out.

Goko Dominion Online / I love the bots sometimes...
« on: February 07, 2014, 04:38:42 pm »
Just played the bots at Dominion online. Possession, Scrying Pool, Tournament, Herald are the key cards and it's a Colony game.

The computer plays possession on me. Gets lots of money with my hand, buys a herald and overpays, then topdecks all of the cards he would like to draw next. Apparently he forgot he was playing my hand, because he's topdecking my scrying pools and tournaments for me...

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20140207/log.50c7ef2fe4b01531d0686840.1391808755022.txt

I saw the setup, thought he would ignore possession ('cause the bots generally do when I play).  I was disappointed when he got one early.  I had no clue how to play against it.  If I build a scrying engine, he'll just take it.  But when I saw him do that..I just started laughing out loud.

Of course, it was only villager bot...

They don't have basic monitoring (nagios/icinga/ganglia, etc) on their servers?! I am resentful both because I was unable to play Dominion for days due to a full disk of all things, and because computers keep waking me up in the middle of the night because of problems (tho only for problems worse than a full disk -- that's what the ops team is for). Boo! This is basic engineering best-practices! Unprofessional!
Also: game logs gzip by about 90% (12k -> 1.5k), making this disk thing even more ridiculous. 100M of logs/day? More like 10M. Not only is almost everything on the web is zipped before transit anyway, but if a client indicates it cannot handle a gzipped transfer, you just stream it through gunzip -- both zip and unzip are O(1), so it barely even costs anything in CPU. Again, this is why nearly everything is zipped by the webserver to ship it to you. Argh. Guys! Bad goko!

You're only now figuring this out?

While it seems unlikely, sometimes that problem crops up.  It happened about a month ago to my laptop, and that was because the logging system had one switch set incorrectly. I didn't know what was going on until I researched the problem. Problem solved, lesson learned. I can give them a break for that one, but only because I've been there.

General Discussion / Re: Games with hidden loyalty
« on: February 03, 2014, 11:19:07 pm »
That's gotta be it. I can't get my group to get "in character" and talk. It's not unusual for us to spend an hour and play four or five games.

It's to the point where no one gives any thought to mission 1 because (with our group of 5), you get so little information. By mission 3 or 4, we usually have people making random accusations, and getting outvoted because they either a) seem to end up as a spy all the time or b) always throw those accusations out anyway.

I would love to have a game take some time, and be more fun as a result, and less of a filler.

Resistance: 15 minutes to play, so it's nice and short.

O_O I haven't had a Resistance game take less than 30 minutes for a long time. Most go on for over an hour. How do your game go that quickly?

I gotta ask you how you make it last that long?

I got one more game in shortly after my last post.  Now it's back to black again.

I suppose I could use this time constructively...nah.

Yep, they are definitely working hard to fix things!

I got to play one game today.  Just one.  Every other time, black screen. Bots, adventures, everything.
I paid forty bucks for this?

How about the fact that DXV has said that in retrospect, he thinks that the Throne Room should be worded like Kings Court, avoiding the whole issue?

I'll dig up a link in a bit...

No need to dig up the link, we all know.  That's why he worded King's Court and Procession differently.  But he has also stated many times that Throne Room's wording hasn't changed.

True, but he's also said that it wouldn't cause any harm to play it that way, either.

Most of these are pretty amateur, but Tom Vasel and Dice Tower have been around for a while, and they have a pretty good production going. I usually look at their reviews before I buy anything.

Having said that, I really didnt agree with most of what the con's said in that podcast.  I've tried to get into thunderstone and ascension, but they just don't do it for me.

This isn't exactly a shining example (talk about terrible draw luck for the first third...), but this is the log for my latest game. Or should I say, it's the link I was given for the log for my latest game.  Same result "loading 1..."

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?1222/log.50c7ef2fe4b01531d0686840.1387776937630.txt
Not sure, how that could have happened.
Code: [Select]
opt.logUrl = 'http://dom.retrobox.eu/?' + opt.logUrl.substr(29);
Correct log is:
http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20131222/log.50c7ef2fe4b01531d0686840.1387776937630.txt

What you list as the correct log does load.  The only difference in the url's is right after the web address, where there is a number. my link has a "?" where the other has a "2013". So I'm assuming for some reason the extension is not including the year in the search.

Yed, that works, but I always select 'any' myself. I noticed it defaults to pro.  Further, when I load drunkensailor myself and search, I still come up with the same results as before (i.e., nothing past November).
You need to allow bots too.

Ah...derp.
That does solve that issue. =)
