Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Weekly Design Contest Thread
« on: October 21, 2018, 11:54:19 pm »
Ok, I think I'm ready. I have to reiterate - there were some really interesting cards that came out of this challenge. I am not a good judge of balance, so I made my pick on a few criteria: (1) did the alternative cost make sense, and add something interesting to the game, (2) did the card as a whole make sense to me, and (3) did the card sit in my "sweet spot" of complexity?

On that basis, I will first name a couple of runners up:

Sunken Village, by Kudasai
Outskirts, by Asper
Royal Retreat, by Aquila

But my final winner is a card that I would love to play with, despite some slight tracking issues, because it seems to create a cool interactive minigame:

Rare Earth, by Tejayes

Congratulations!

There are some really strong entrants, and I'm going to have to go through them all and work out which one I like the most. So I haven't forgotten, but I might take a while.

You can just say "Costing up to ". And it doesn't need a dividing line.

That even feels like it might fit on a card.  Though then maybe this isn't a card for this contest - it's an alternative payment, not an alternative cost.
I'm ok with it. It's still in a pretty broad way the same kind of thing.

Apropos of nothing, but one of my favourite boat races is the Henley-on-Todd, in Alice Springs. Possibly the only boat race that gets cancelled due to the river they race in having water in it.

I agree with faust - I did intend for the definition to be fairly broad and I'm really happy with the ways it's been interpreted, but just having a combined coin+debt cost isn't quite what I had in mind.

Maybe put the text of the card? It's easier to quote and stuff that way.

General Discussion / Re: Maths thread.
« on: October 15, 2018, 06:27:41 pm »
Not quite the same thing, but in one applied maths course I took the lecturer solved a problem, but at one step he pointed out that there are a bunch of conditions you're meant to check before you do it, and said "We can leave that to the pure mathematicians, we'll just get an answer and check that it works". And he did - once he reached an answer, he proved it was a solution to the original problem, and never bothered to confirm that the process he used to reach it was valid.

...When are we going to get the next challenge?

Not in good time. ConMan is trying to ice our creativity.
Also weekends and Australian time zones can get in the way of my posting. That said, thanks for picking my card, faust!

The new challenge is:

Design a card with variable cost.

I'll leave the details up for interpretation - maybe it works like Peddler, maybe it has an alternative means of being gained, maybe you can find some way to have two different costs on the card and rules for figuring out which one to use.

The teasers said there would be a trasher that you can't turn off, but we didn't get to see it in the previews.
I thought Sewers was confirmed as the always-on trasher.

No, itís not Sewers.
Neat-o.

Villagers and Coffers are infinite, you can save two slots of arbitrary data in a Dominion game. Loops with Lurker, Graverobber or Rogue allow you to have infinite operations. It is easy to build a two-stack push down automaton. That proves, that Dominion is Turing-complete.

Yes, I agree, all you need is to have these two piles which you can control freely. One non-trivial issue, though, is input encoding. You would need to show that your TM/2-counter/stack machine encoding (two piles + trash-gainer + deterministic player decisions) does the same as the respective machine on any input. Now there are infinitely many inputs and you need to encode them with the rest of Dominion. I think this could be done by assuming no randomness and to predetermine card order after shuffling based on what input should be encoded.
The top of your deck is essentially a stack, and top-decking/drawing are your push-pop actions. So as long as you control how much you can draw (or you assume some kind of infinite deck), you never have to worry about shuffling.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: card ranking lists
« on: October 08, 2018, 08:51:44 pm »
As a result, it's pretty impossible to know whether the weakest $4 is weaker or stronger than the weakest $5 since they're both just the weakest card on their respective list, but on AdamH's list, if one had an average of 1.3 and the other was 1.9, you can do the ranking easily.

Well, Qvist's lists do do this with the Potion costs, at least, because any other ranking of those wouldn't work. As it turns out, they can all be the best 6P card.

Without implying anything - what reasons could people have to think of it as worse?

The cost is a big part of it. First you have to buy the Potion, which will clog your deck for the rest of the game, then you have to waste all of the $ in your hand to buy the Transmute if you don't have +Buy.
I was also going to try to explain how it's slow and doesn't even do a good job of thinning (because it turns cards into other cards you don't necessarily even want), but honestly I think the strategy article explains it perfectly well.

Wine Cellar
Action - Reserve - $4
+1 Action
Put this on your tavern mat.
---
At the start of your Buy phase, you may call this, to spend all the coin tokens on it for $1 each. Otherwise, place a coin token on this.

Spending coin tokens works the same as using them from your Coffers. You must use all the tokens when you call the card (although you don't have to spend all the money you get from using them).

EDIT: I had a go at creating the card using Violet CLM's tool, here we go.

If you're not sure, you can put something on the article's Talk page (click the "Talk" tab up the top and put a section in there). If you're pretty sure the advice is complete rubbish you can probably remove it from the article (and maybe copy to the Talk page for reference).

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Decadent Nobility
« on: August 30, 2018, 07:21:27 pm »
If we use Travelling Fair as a benchmark for the shadow price of an extra Buy you need to buy 2 cards to make up for the paying of Decadent Nobility and once you buy 3 you got the extra Buy for free. So at the first glance this seems OK for a one-shot Princess.
But due to the trashing this basically sucks. If you already got a megaturn this is unlikely to matter much. As you gotta trash everything that you buy afterwards this is only good for piling, Groundskeeper, Conquest and Goons.

Yeah having considered it more carefully I tried to delete this. I'm not sure why it didn't work
Just because the first attempt didn't work out doesn't mean that your two basic ideas, Princess as an Event and gaining implying forced trashing, aren't unique and interesting.
I agree. There are some interesting things to explore here, even if the original concept doesn't quite work.

If we take the first interesting idea from the card, maybe we could do something like this:

???
Event - $0
+2 Buys
Once per turn: Until end of turn, all cards cost $2 less, but not less than $0. At the start of Clean-up this turn, take 6 Debt.

I added the Once per turn to prevent total blow-out of the effect, but I think you still get a lot of benefit from it (I suspect that this wording is still too strong and you would always open with it, but there's still room for adjustment).

You gain the cards that were trashed as a result of playing Noble Brigand, not from any other effect.

Trusty Steed doesn't strike me as a likely card for someone to have in their deck when playing a slog!
I agree, although I suspect that whoever gets Followers has a decent chance of turning the game into a slog, which may affect Trusty Steed's desirability. (Not convinced that it's the right move in a Feodum game, though.)

What is the shortest name in Dominion? For example, "Curse" has five letters. Abandoned Mine has the shortest text.

Well, there is only one name in "Dominion" so the answer must be Dominion.

Well, there's Minion in Dominion, which is shorter already.
There's also "Dom".
Don't forget about "I."

I didn't say "in English". The shortest name is "塔"(Tower) in Japanese. A single letter. We read it "tɔː".

*Annoyed grumbling*

Technically, the Furigana has it at two
<looks up online>
"syllabaries".
I believe the word is morae.

Whereas I suspect that Storeroom is still the strongest enabler, even if you open double Storeroom and then get Tunnels after that. The +Buy is pretty important.

Also, Haven is a pretty good card!

I despise Haven.  Though not as much as Tax.
And not as much as the IRS despises a Tax Haven.

This sounds really cool, but I need someone to help explain turing machines to me for the third time  ;)
A Turing machine is an abstracted version of a computer with (a) infinite storage and (b) no human intervention after setting up the initial input and pressing "go".

One common Turing machine set-up (there are a few variations but they can be proven to be equivalent to each other) is that you have an infinitely long strip of paper (or "tape") that is split into squares that can each hold one "bit" of information, where a bit is a single character from some kind of alphabet (the obvious choice is the binary set {0, 1} but you could make it the English alphabet or whatever you like, as long as there are a finite number of choices).

You also have a machine that points at a square on the tape and is able to (a) read the character on the square, (b) change that character to another one, and (c) move one square either left or right on the tape. The machine decides how to do this based on a bunch of instructions it has, which are stored in a variety of "states" - think of it like a Choose Your Own Adventure book where every page just has a set of rules like this:

  • If the character is "A", then write "B", move one square left and turn to page 1184.
  • If the character is "B", then write "A", move one square right and turn to page 578.
  • If the character is "C", then STOP.
  • ...

For something a little wacky ...

Coronet
Action - Treasure - $4
If it's your Action phase, you may play up to 3 Treasure cards from your hand, then draw up to 6 cards in hand.
If it's your Buy phase, discard any number of cards, then draw up to 6 cards in hand.

You could possibly have a pure Reaction as part of a split pile, where it reacts to the other card in the pile being played. Something like ...

Card A
Reaction
When another player plays a Card B, you may reveal this from your hand, for <benefit>.

Card B
Action
<Benefit>
If any other player revealed Card B, <benefit>.
