My Games vs. Bearskinrug. I streamed for the first time and i think i didnt play that concentrated so i did kind a bunch of missplays. Nevertheless a good series and highly intense games( especialy the last 2). Thans Baerskinrug for the games.

Thanks to you, too, for a fun series of games.  It was interesting to watch all your videos and see your thinking from the other side of the game.  For what it's worth, my thoughts on the games:

GAME 1:  Swingy Cultist game.  I got a massive advantage w/ the Ruins split, and that was probably the biggest key to the game.  I think in the turn where you had 8 coins and two buys, you were probably better off going Province over double-Silk Road.  At least that would have me reconsider whether I wanted to follow you down the Silk Road path, which I was pretty sure my deck was better equipped to handle.

GAME 2:  I was worried about missing the Familiar, so I decided to skip it altogether.  I also have an irrational love of Masterpiece, so I try to utilize it more often than is likely practical.  By the end, I was cashing in on Masterpieces more to deny you the Silvers than anything else.  I am curious why you opted to buy a Trader over a Familiar with your early $4P hand.  My biggest concern was that I'd get cursed before I could get a critical mass of Silvers, and I feel like skipping that early Familiar probably was a mistake.

GAME 3:  I was totally outplayed here.  I was hoping to get something going where I'd be able to have a disappearing economy using Bandit Camps to generate Spoils which I would spend on my turn and leave you with nothing useful when you used Possession.  Unfortunately, either due to bad timing or not being smart/skilled enough, not only could I not pull that off, but the reverse became true -- I was making Spoils on my turns that you were spending when you used Possession.  I lost hope, possibly a bit prematurely, but I just couldn't afford a Possession of my own, you had a couple Provinces, a couple Possessions and a Butcher to chew up Provinces while generating coins, so it was a lost cause.

GAME 4:  I wish this game would have went longer just b/c I was interested in the card interplay.  Total rookie mistake on my part to forget about the Ruins pile.  Even when you bought an Estate in your second-to-last turn, I was puzzled by the move b/c I didn't see any likely 3-pile scenario.  You ended it just when I was about to have a big turn myself!  Well played, and a good reminder for me to keep an eye on the Ruins pile and to not reflexively play that Marauder under late game circumstances.

GAME 5:  Things never came together for me quite like I hoped they would.  I think your Sea Hag slowed me down in just the right ways, and in your commentary, you noted the flaws in using Steward for draw/coin -- it's an either/or proposition, so I wasn't creating as much virtual currency as I thought I would.  A few things I wish I'd done differently, but it was a fun game.

GAME 6:  Watching your commentary, I think it was a mistake to trash Coppers over Estates with the Junk Dealer.  With thin enough decks and enough money to expect regular Colony purchases, I don't think Silk Road was ever going to be a worthwhile thing in that game.  I wasn't sure about the Altar purchase early on since I primarily wanted it to gain an Iron Monger advantage, which was risky since I figured we'd both be targeting that card.  You went heavier on Tunnels than I would have and I got lucky that you hit $9 and bought a Platinum rather than the last Iron Monger.

Again, thanks for the games, and thanks for posting your gaming sessions.  Very interesting to watch, and I hope we can play again sometime.

bearskinrug edged out gamesou, 3.5 to 2.5

Game 1: gamesou wins

My initial plan was to focus primarily on Monument, Bandit Camp and Warehouse, but I got sidetracked almost immediately and bought a couple Bridges once my opponent started going that direction.  I wish I'd bought my second Monument far sooner than I did (turn 16!), probably before I bought my first Bridge.  Not really sure the result would have been any different since my strategy was a little disjointed.

Game 2: gamesou wins

On turn 13, I had no choice but to buy a Duchy and hope my opponent would not be able to double-Province on his next turn.  Once he did, I think with a good amount of luck, I may have been able to win with a final Province, double-Duchy last turn, but all I could manage was Province, Duchy for the loss.

Game 3: bearskinrug wins

Me getting the 5-2 opening was probably the critical moment in the game with Torturer and Native Village on the board.  Count's trashing was huge on both sides, but I definitely got the better of it.  On turns 11 and 13 when it was likely my opponent had his Count in hand given his acceptance of curses from Torturer, I'm not sure whether I should have played the third Torturer, but I think it was still probably the right move to play them all.

Game 4: tie
http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20140220/log.516d321ae4b082c74d7b345d.1392936711659.txt
When I have more time, I'll have to study this log a little more closely since I'm pretty sure I misplayed this.  I also made the mistake of not checking the score before opening the game up to a three-pile ending, so I got exceptionally lucky to escape with a tie.  I started buying up the Gardens as a denial tactic, but I'm not sure I wouldn't have been better served buying a Province or two first.  Also, I Heralded into Mercenary a couple times when I'd rather not have....

Game 5: bearskinrug wins
http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20140220/log.516d321ae4b082c74d7b345d.1392937459825.txt
Probably my strongest game of the bunch, or at least the one where I felt like I had the most cohesive strategy.  I went in expecting to go Hamlet-Menagie-Upgrade-Hoard, and that's pretty much what I stuck with.

Game 6: bearskinrug wins
http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20140220/log.516d321ae4b082c74d7b345d.1392938806578.txt
I was first to get to the King's Courts and was lucky to have my Watchtower in hand when he had his big Torturer turn.  Watchtower turned out to be a key card for all of its uses.  I wanted to pick up a Storeroom for the +buy sooner in the game, but I didn't actually get there until turn 16.

Overall, very fun set of games and thanks to gamesou for playing with me.  The series easily could have gone the other way but for a handful of lucky breaks in my favor.

Check out this: http://gokologs.drunkensailor.org/leaderboard/?full=False&sortkey=level
It uses the same algorithm as isotropic did (pretty much) and is based on all your 2p-pro-games.
It puts at level 31.

Thank you - very helpful!

Out of curiosity, roughly what goko ratings correspond with what isotropic ratings?  I hovered around level 20 at the end of isotropic, and I fluctuate b/w about 5500 and 6000 on goko -- just curious whether those are roughly equivalent or whether I've improved (on somewhat arbitrary measurements) since the goko switch.....

Game Reports / Duke game - was Duchy the right purchase?
« on: January 16, 2013, 01:29:16 pm »
Hi, all.  I just won a game on isotropic against a level 40 player, which I'll admit is pretty exciting. (I'm a lowly level-20!)  I'm happy with the win, but I think we both made a few tactical mistakes along the way.  I was hoping to get some feedback.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/16/game-20130116-095338-4a19c6ec.html

To my first question, on turn 10, my opponent bought a Duchy on a Duke board, which tipped his hand that he was going to make a move for Duchy-Duke.  When my turn 10 came up, even though I had enough for a Province and had been playing towards going for Provinces, I decided to buy a Duchy to counteract the Duchy-Duke game he was playing.  Was this the right move, or would I have been better off just carrying on with my plan?  My strategy in buying the Duchy (and subsequent Duchies and Dukes) was to eliminate points from the board that my opponent would be seeking while using the cards as fodder for my Apprentice (since I still needed to go for Provinces to win).

Also, in turn 13, shouldn't my opponent have Remodeled his Gold into a Duchy rather than trash out a Duchy for the last Duchy? (Note: in turn 12, I immediately regretted not doing the Remodel-Duchy-into-Duchy trick to remove points from the board.)  Seems like losing that Duchy might have been one of the pivotal moments of the game.

I would appreciate thoughts on the points above, as well as any other input people are willing to offer.

Thanks.

Rules Questions / Chancellor - Tunnel
« on: August 23, 2012, 02:14:43 am »
Hi, all.  I just finished a game on isotropic where I lost in large part due to a flawed opening.  I saw Chancellor and Tunnel in the kingdom and assumed I could use the Chancellor to discard my deck (containing Tunnels and get some early golds).  However, when I tried this, it didn't work.  Discarding an entire deck that includes Tunnels did not call up the "Reveal Tunnel" option, so I had to start over.  If using a Chancellor allows you to put your entire deck into your discard pile, why does this not count as "discarding" Tunnels other than during the clean-up phase (thus activating the "reveal for gold" feature)?

Any insight is appreciated.

Regards.

Dominion General Discussion / Slow / Time-consuming play
« on: July 20, 2012, 07:43:04 pm »
I'm still relatively new to the Dominion / Isotropic community, but I have a question regarding play etiquette.  I've noticed that some players take an exceptionally long amount of time per turn, sometimes due to delays and sometimes due to elaborate but unproductive card cycling techniques.  I've sat through three-minute turns of chained actions to see an ultimate result of a $4-5 card.  Is there a general protocol on this?  While I'm impressed when somebody can run up a million points using complicated Goons engines, I'm must less impressed when I have to keep telling the Duchess that, yes, I would like to keep the Gold that is on top of my deck as my opponent keeps running through an endless string of card cycles that lead to nothing.  If I'm in such a game and can't take it anymore, is it impolite to tell the other person congratulations and excuse myself from the game (as opposed to asking permission to forfeit, which I would generally do)?  Just would like to get a sense for the community mindset on this.

Thanks.
Matt

PS - I should note that the same question applies to situations where the opponent agonized for minutes at a time over what to buy w/ 3 coins or whether or not to take the Silver they've turned up w/ their Jester.  At what point is enough enough?

Help! / When should I have stopped buying Laboratories in this game?
« on: July 19, 2012, 05:14:53 pm »
Hi, all.  I posted a game the other day and appreciate the valuable feedback I've gotten.  I have another to throw out there for some insight:

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201207/19/game-20120719-135754-452a4974.html

My opponent went to a very aggressive Fool's Gold strategy, while I opted to make use of the Laboratories (especially since he wasn't contesting that move).  I started buying Fool's Golds (rather than Silver) when I didn't have enough money for a Laboratory in Turn 3 to contest my opponent running away with the Fool's Golds.  In Turn 12, I had enough money for a Province, but opted to buy the Laboratory for two reasons: (i) I figured another Laboratory in my deck would help keep it from stalling once I started buying Provinces, and (ii) one more Laboratory for me was one fewer for my opponent (therefore making him more likely to stall if he tries to switch up strategies).

In restrospect, I probably would have bought a Hamlet instead of a Fool's Gold in one of my early turns (so I could capitalize on the +1 buy), but late in the game when I could afford Provinces, I didn't want to "waste" a turn buying Provinces to get myself a potential second buy.  Agreed?

A few questions, is there an "optimal" number of Laboratories to have in a deck?  In other words, did I stick w/ buying Laboratories for one too many turns, or did I stick w/ it the right amount of time?

Should I have even bothered contesting the Fool's Gold strategy, or was that generally a distraction I should have avoided (since it wasn't really part of my initial plan)?

I had planned to supplement my Laboratories with a Library, but given the way my opponent was going full-bore w/ the Fool's Gold strategy, I figured it was best to just stick w/ the Laboratories.  I don't think the Fool's Gold strategy was a particularly good one -- in what circumstances is a Fool's Gold strategy effective?

If my opponent had played a better game, how would you have supplemented the Laboratories to build a stronger and/or more efficient deck?

Any guidance offered is very much appreciated, and in any event, thanks at least for reading this far!
Matt

Help! / Feedback appreciated
« on: July 17, 2012, 10:13:41 pm »
Greetings.  I am a recent addition to the Dominion pantheon, and I feel like my gameplay could use a bit of direction.  Attached is the log for a game I just finished.  While I ultimately won the game, I felt like the win was more "reactive" than it was reading the board and formulating an up-front strategy.  Any feedback on the game progress, things I could have paid better attention to, etc., would be greatly appreciated.

Regards.
Matt
