Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Empty the Supply in 4 Turns
« on: February 25, 2013, 07:53:56 am »
I found an error while going through it all with the physical cards.

You put Kc 1-10 on deck, then draw 1-4. Then you put Nc 2-9 on deck... but when you Kc-Council Room, you draw the rest of the King's Courts without drawing the Nomad Camps. Also, you say to top-deck Bridge along with Sir Martin and Squire (on top of the King's Courts and Nomad Camps), but it is not drawn when you play Kc-Council Room either; it's drawn later when you play Margrave.

I'm assuming that this is the sort of thing that you can somehow work around... I really hope so anyway! It seems likely that you can just not top-deck the Nomad Camps or the Bridge... you're really close to the reshuffle anyway, and if you do reshuffle, then you can get all the Nomad Camps and the Bridge on top anyway...

I know this is genius, really, but why have I spotted a mistake (may not be a mistake, but I spotted it nonetheless): He puts Nc2-9 on the deck with Wt, and where does the tenth one go? Shouldn't it go on the deck too (because it's nomad camp?) or does he trash it w/ watchtower?

Fixed both of these.

29 is fairly easy to get:

Open Council Room/Bank
Turn: Draw Council Room, Bank and 3 Silvers. Play Council Room, draw 4 Silvers. Play 7 Silvers and Bank (worth $8). Buy 2 Colonies.

Not sure yet if there's enough turns to get a more complex solution working.

Oh, man.  This is back!  This place is boring without you :)

Hmm... 900 points with only one buy.  I'm guessing you'll be assuming an infinite silver pile?

I'm too busy these days to try anything this time around, but I'm looking forward to the solution!  Looks like there will be some new ideas!  Perhaps I will try to take some time to contribute after you reveal.  Also, I suspect 1000 points is possible.

I was wondering if you'd show up again. :D

To clarify: getting over 50 points in one buy means that one of my buys increases my score by over 50, not that I only use a single buy in the solution. In fact I use rather more than that (around 100 if you include Black Market buys).

And yes, my current solution does score well over 1000 points. I'll probably post it at the weekend once I've finished tidying it up.

The only thing I'm unclear on is that in your last post, you seemed limited on the most points by turn 4 to what your answer had been; does this thread mean that you have also improved upon that post?

I'm currently fine-tuning my solution to see how many points I can get. I believe my current solution gives around 900 points, but I put 500 in the challenge in case I had made a mistake somewhere.

Challenge: In a solitaire game of Dominion with perfect shuffle luck, empty the Supply by the end of Turn 4. Outpost and Possession turns count towards the turn limit.

Hard Modes:
1. Also gain all the Colonies and Platinums.
2. Also score over 500 points.
3. Solve this puzzle as well by scoring over 50 points with a single buy.
4. Do all of the above at once. 8)

Given that it's possible to end the game in 4 turns thanks to necropolis and some other powerful cards, what's the best that can be done for turn 3 in a solitaire game. Outpost turns don't count.

Rough effort:
Buy Nomad camp
Play nomad camp, buy Tunnel/Estate
Play nomad camp, buy Tunnel/Estate

5 estates+2 tunnels=11VP

I think something's gone wrong here. 5 Estate and 2 Tunnels are worth 9VP, not 11.

Anyway, I've yet to find a method to beat 11VP. Here's another way to get 11VP:

Open Coppersmith/Tunnel
Turn 3: Draw Coppersmith and 4 Coppers. Play all of these, buy Province.

It's also possible to get a Colony by the end of Turn 3 using Shelters, but this only gets you 10 VP:

Open Coppersmith/Watchtower
Turn 3: Draw Necropolis, Coppersmith, Watchtower and 2 Coppers
Play Necropolis and Coppersmith
Play Watchtower, draw 4 Coppers
Play 6 Coppers, buy Colony

Impressive, but there are a few flaws:
- You gain 11 Catacombs
- You play Band of Misfits as Procession when the Procession pile is empty on 4 occasions, but Band of Misfits can only copy cards in the Supply - the rulebook states it can't copy empty Supply piles.
- You have $46, not $45 (you probably missed $1 from Peddler)
- When you play your first 4 Goons, you should play 4 Nomad Camps, not 3, with them for final part of your solution to work. You should them not draw a Hamlet or Nomad Camp from Watchtower (since they were already in your hand), and not play a Nomad Camp with the next 2 Goons (since you should have already played it). From the following Watchtower, you should also not draw a Watchtower, since you should have one extra Watchtower in your hand anyway.

It seems to me that most of these should be fixable (although fixing them may lower the score slightly), but I haven't had time to try to fix it yet.

I've now reached 76 points. Improving on this will be much more difficult though, because this solution empties the Catacombs pile, stopping further Procession/Remake/Fortress tricks.

Kingdom: Hamlet, Squire, Watchtower, Fortress, Nomad Camp, Procession, Remake, Catacombs, Goons, Peddler

Turn 1: Draw 4 Coppers and Hovel
Play 4 Coppers, buy Nomad Camp.

Play Hamlet, draw Overgrown Estate, discard Hovel and Overgrown Estate
Play Watchtower, draw 6 Coppers

I +1'ed the hell out your 45 point solution, but you either have an error or a typo. At the start of turn 4 you go Procession -> Procession -> Nomad Camp despite Nomad Camp not being in your initial hand.

I've fixed this, but it has reduced the score to only (!) 41 points.

Edit: While trying to get back up to 45 points, I instead reached 58 points:

Kingdom: Hamlet, Squire, Watchtower, Fortress, Nomad Camp, Procession, Remake, Catacombs, Goons, Peddler

Turn 1: Draw 4 Coppers and Hovel
Play 4 Coppers, buy Nomad Camp.

Turn 2: Draw Nomad Camp, 3 Coppers and Overgrown Estate
Play Nomad Camp and 3 Coppers, buy Watchtower and Hamlet.

Turn 3: Draw Necropolis, (reshuffle), Nomad Camp, Hamlet, Watchtower and Hovel
Play Necropolis and Nomad Camp
Play Hamlet, draw Overgrown Estate, discard Hovel and Overgrown Estate
Play Watchtower, draw 6 Coppers
Buy 2 Processions and Peddler

Turn 4: Draw Copper, (reshuffle), Procession, Procession, Nomad Camp and Watchtower
Play Procession, play Procession twice:
- Play Nomad Camp twice, trash Nomad Camp, gain Catacombs
  - Reveal Watchtower, trash Catacombs, gain Fortress, reveal Watchtower, trash Fortress, put in hand
- Play Fortress twice, draw Peddler and Hamlet, trash Fortress, put Fortress in hand, gain Catacombs
  - Reveal Watchtower, trash Catacombs, gain Procession, reveal Watchtower, put Procession on deck
- Trash Procession, gain Catacombs
  - Reveal Watchtower, trash Catacombs, gain Procession, reveal Watchtower, put Procession on deck
Play Hamlet, draw Procession, discard Copper for +1 Buy

It can be done in 5 turns, using this solution, but replacing all cases of Goons with Pillage, drawing all 15 Spoils using Cellar by discarding an extra 15 Coppers, and using Forge to trash all the Spoils and gain a Silver.

Here's the solution to the hard mode, with 1036 points by the end of Turn 5:

Kingdom: Black Market (Bm), Chancellor (Ch), Watchtower (Wt), Bridge (Br), Ironworks (Ir), Throne Room (Tr), Council Room (Cr), Haggler (Hg), Upgrade (Up), Goons (Gn), King's Court (Kc)

Black Market deck contains: Forge, Fairgrounds, Grand Market, Bazaar, City, Contraband, Counting House, Duke, Festival, Inn, Market, Tribute, Feodum, Gardens, Silk Road, Worker's Village, Cellar, Crossroads, Hamlet, Pawn, Squire, Vineyard, Young Witch (Chancellor is the Bane) and Cultist.

Open Ironworks/Chancellor

Turn 3: Draw IrChCCC
Play Ir1, gain Tr1
Play Ch1, discard deck
Play 3C
Buy Wt1

Turn 4: Draw TrIrChWtC
Play Tr1-Ir1, gain Ir2,Tr2, reveal Wt1, top-deck both
Play Wt1, draw Ir2,Tr2,2C
Play Ir2, gain Br1
Play Tr2-Ch1, discard deck
Play 3C
Buy Kc1

Turn 5: Draw TrKcBrIrWt
Play Tr1-Kc1:
- Play Br1 thrice
- Play Ir1 thrice, gain Kc2,Kc3,Cr1, reveal Wt1, top-deck all
Play Wt1, draw Kc2,Kc3,Cr1,Tr2,Ir2,Ch1
Play Tr2-Kc2:
- Play Ir2 thrice, gain Kc4,Up1,Up2
- Play Kc3 thrice:
  - Play Cr1 thrice, draw 7C,3E,Kc4,Up1
  - Play Up1 thrice, 3E-->Tr3,Ir3,Ir4, draw Up2,Tr3,Ir3
  - Play Kc4 thrice:
    - Play Ir3 thrice, gain Kc5,Kc6,Cr2
    - Play Up2 thrice, 3C-->Ir5,Ir6,Ir7, draw Ir4,Kc5,Cr2
    - Play Kc5 thrice:
      - Play Ir4 thrice, gain Kc7,Cr3,Up3
      - Play Tr3 thrice:
        - Play Cr2 twice, draw Kc6,Kc7,Ir5,Ir6,Ir7,Cr3,Up3
        - Play Up3 twice, 2C-->Ir8,Ir9, draw Ir8
        - Play Ir5 twice, gain Up4,Cr4
      - Play Kc6 thrice:
        - Play Ir6 thrice, gain Kc8,Kc9,Kc10
        - Play Ir7 thrice, gain Hg1-3
        - Play Kc7 thrice:
          - Play Ir8 thrice, gain Hg4-6
          - Play Cr3 thrice, draw Up4,Cr4,Kc8,Kc9,Kc10,Ir9,Hg1-6
          - Play Kc8 thrice:
            - Play Up4 thrice, ChCC-->Ir10,Tr4,Tr5, draw Ir10,Tr4
            - Play Ir9 thrice, gain Hg7-9
            - Play Ir10 thrice, gain Hg10,Cr5,Bm1
Play Tr4-Cr4, draw Tr5,Hg7-10,Cr5,Bm1
Play Hg1-10

At this point, we have 27 Actions and 14 Buys, and each time we buy a card (including by Black Market), we gain 10 cheaper cards. So:

Play Tr5-Bm1, buy Forge and Grand Market, gain 20 cards (Gn1-10,Cr6-10,Tr6,Bm2-5)
Play Cr5, draw Gn1-3,Cr6
Play Cr6, draw Gn4-6,Cr7
Play Cr7, draw Gn7-9,Cr8
Play Cr8, draw Gn10,Cr9,Cr10,Tr6
Play Cr9, draw Bm2-5
Play Gn1-10

Now we have 11 Actions and 29 Buys, and get 10 VP every time we buy a card.

Play Tr6-Kc9:
- Play Bm2 thrice, buy Bazaar, City and Counting House, gain 30 cards (Bm6-10, Wt2-3, Br2-8, Tr7-10, 3 Coppers, a Potion and 8 Ruined Markets)
- Play Kc10 thrice:
  - Play Bm3 thrice, buy Festival, Market and Tribute, gain 30 cards (30 Coppers)
  - Play Bm4 thrice, buy Worker's Village, Cellar and Inn (shuffle Cellar and Counting House into deck), gain 20 cards (20 Coppers)
  - Play Bm5 thrice, buy Crossroads, Hamlet and Pawn, gain nothing
Play Cr10, draw Counting House, Cellar, Grand Market and Forge
Play Counting House, draw 53 Coppers
Play Cellar, discard 37 Coppers, draw 37 cards (Bazaar, City, Festival, Market, Tribute, Worker's Village, Inn, Crossroads, Hamlet, Pawn, Bm6-10, Wt2-3,

Br2-8, Tr7-10, a Potion and 8 Ruined Markets)
Play Tr7-Tr8:
- Play Bm6 twice, buy Contraband and Duke, gain 20 cards (Br9-10, Wt4-6 and 15 Potions)
- Play Tr9 twice:
  - Play Bm7 twice, buy Feodum and Gardens, gain 20 cards (Wt7-10, Ch2-10, 5 Silvers, Ruined Village and Ruined Library)
  - Play Tr10 twice:
    - Play Bm8 twice, buy Silk Road and Fairgrounds, gain 20 cards (Up5-10, 4 Silvers and 10 Curses), reveal Wt2, trash 10 Curses
Play Bm9, buy Squire, gain nothing
Play Bm10, play Potion, buy Vineyards, gain nothing

Now we have 5 Actions, 31 Buys, and 200 VP from Goons.

Play City, draw Squire and Contraband
Play Grand Market, draw Silver
Play Bazaar, draw Silver
Play Festival
Play Inn, draw 2 Silvers, discard 2 Coppers
Play Market, draw Silver
Play Tribute, discard ChBr, get +4 Actions
Play Worker's Village, draw Silver
Play Crossroads
Play Hamlet, draw Silver, discard 2 Coppers for +1 Action and +1 Buy
Play Pawn for +1 Action and +1 Buy
Play Squire for +2 Buys

Now we are up to 15 Actions and 39 Buys, so we can:

Play Br2-8
Play 8 Ruined Markets
Play Contraband

This gives us 55 Buys and all card cost $10 less, letting us buy 8 Provinces, 8 Duchies, 8 Estates, 12 Platinums, 11 Golds and 8 Colonies, gaining 51 cards (19 Golds and 32 Silvers), emptying the Supply.

This gives us a total of 1036 VP: 750 VP from Goons, 160 VP from Colonies/Provinces/Duchies/Estates, 44 VP from Vineyards (133 Action cards), 34 VP from Gardens (340 cards), 18 VP from Fairgrounds (45 different cards), 13 VP from Feodum (40 Silvers), 9 VP from Silk Road (38 Victory cards) and 8 VP from Duke (8 Duchies).

Here's my solution.

Here is the solution, in full detail.  I double checked, but there are still probably mistakes, so please let me know!

The only flaw that I can see is that your third Upgrade turns 2 Coppers into a Council Room and an Upgrade, which is impossible since you only have 3 Bridges in play at that point. That looks easy to fix though.

Before I post my solution though, I'll just see if anyone can do this:

HARD MODE: In a solitaire game of Dominion with perfect shuffle luck, gain every card in the Supply and score over 900 points by the end of Turn 5. Outpost/Possession turn count towards this limit.

20
Because my previous challenge wasn't hard enough:

Challenge: In a solitaire game of Dominion with perfect shuffle luck, gain every card in the Supply by the end of Turn 5.

I will post my solution in 2 weeks time, or if anyone can solve this before then.

Edit: Outpost and Possession turns do count against the turn limit.

Thanks for catching that.  Revised.

Now it has other problems: you gain 11 Talismans and you play 5 Bridges but only gain 4 of them.

I presume you meant to gain a Bridge rather than a Talisman somewhere.

Barring these minor errors, this does solve the puzzle, so here is my own solution:

Kingdom: Black Market (Bm), Chancellor (Ch), Watchtower (Wt), Bridge (Br), Ironworks (Ir), Talisman (Ts), Throne Room (Tr), Cache (Ca), Council Room (Cr), Nobles (Nb), King's Court (Kc). Black Market deck contains Woodcutter (Wc), Baron (Bn) Margrave (Mg) and Young Witch (with Ch or Wt as the Bane).

I had PMed Chameleon but I guess I'll post out here, too.

If I made no mistakes, this solves the hard mode of the puzzle.  There's also definitely still room for improving/tweaking.

There's a flaw in your solution: you play your ninth King's Court before you actually draw it. That should be easily fixable though.

Edit: You also Upgrade a Copper into a Council Room with only 3 Bridges played, which doesn't work either, but that should also be easy to fix.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: All the Treasure by Turn 5

He's only made 9 posts, and nothing seems out of the ordinary. Actually, some pretty good puzzle solving in those 9.

At a minimum, I see you needing 12 buys, cost reduction x6 (9 for hard mode), and all 10 Tailismans. I'm not sure that's doable by the end of turn 5.

take this solution and grab a few talismans at the end instead of council rooms.

That solution is flawed. The second King's Court is played three times, despite the fact it wasn't King's Courted itself. Also, the gain of the second Nobles is used to get the third Ironworks in hand, but then the Nobles is played without drawing it (he could have intended to play the third Nobles rather than the second, but then the second Nobles is in the discard pile and there's no way of drawing it without going through the entire deck or using Chancellor).

Puzzles and Challenges / All the Treasure by Turn 5

Challenge: In a solitaire game of Dominion with perfect shuffle luck, gain all 53 Coppers, 40 Silvers and 30 Golds from the Supply by the end of Turn 5. Possession and Outpost turns count towards the turn limit.

Hard Mode: Also gain all 12 Platinums.

I will post my solution if anyone solves the Hard Mode version, or in 2 weeks time.

Edit: Wait, there's 53 Coppers in a solitaire game, not 46. Fixed now - my solution still works.

25
39 without using chancellor
...
35 another way without chancellor

I think you mean 42 and 38, since you've forgotten your starting Estates.

Clarification question:
Do prizes and black market deck cards count as part of the kingdom?

Ruleswise, Prizes aren't Kingdom cards (since they're never part of the supply), but cards in the Black Market deck are (it says on the card: "Before the game, make a Black Market deck out of one copy of each Kingdom card not in the supply.").
