Game Reports / Governor + Minion is weird...
« on: March 13, 2013, 03:09:19 am »
Got to play with governor + minion in a recent game (+ oasis) and its just a really weird dynamic, because the governor +3 card has absolutely no downside, the + gold actually clogs your opponents deck with terrible silvers, and the remodel just helps a lot, but also potentially lets your opponent protect good hands.

A few thoughts:
1) Not sure this strategy is actually better than pure Governor zerg-rush, but I think colonies help a lot in that regard.
2) Pretty sure with any village support this becomes degenerate on this board, the fact that the only thing to do with bonus Gov cards was oasis kept the local systems in line.

Am I late to the party on this interaction, and was there something better to be doing?

Game Reports / Re: Discussion on Scrying Pool/University
« on: March 06, 2013, 01:37:30 am »
I think it really depends on how useful the actions are, since every turn earlier you pick up Uni is an extra action and time to use every other action, if you're just grabbing villages/cantrips with uni, then well, don't pick it up, but if you're getting good cards I'm pretty sure you want to open Uni and then switch to pool since extra plays outweigh slightly faster early cycling. Anyway, when your deck is 11 blanks and 1 SP, the Pool is pretty useless, so I might even advide opening IW/Something over Potion/Something in an SP game, but I'm not sure if I'm right.

Game Reports / Re: What's the best strategy on this board?
« on: March 06, 2013, 01:33:19 am »
Duke/HT is probably going to get outclassed by Goons. I think in a battle between two attacking decks (Goons mirror or Ghost Ship) you want to pick up some reasonable number of HT, which both mitigates opposing attacks and also helps bootstrap you into the attacks early without clogging your deck with stupid silvers.

Game Reports / Check turn 9

The main lesson of this game is that Chapel crushes Familiar, but the more exciting lesson occurs on turn 9.

Game Reports / Best Possession of all time!
« on: November 21, 2012, 01:16:38 am »
Playing a wharf engine game, (we probably should have gone Wharf-BM but whatevs) and I'm ahead near the endgame when I see my opponent pick up a Potion w/ Possession/Pool on the board, I have an extra 2 + buys so I grab embargo and embargo the possession before he picks it up. Anyway, he ends up possessing me once, and its kinda great.

Its typical in the sense that Apothecary is amazing. I would have potentially picked up some cellars rather than xroads after the first, but thats just because I find Apoth + Cellar to be surprisingly strong.

Dear lundkvast,
Sorry I was able to hit an early golem allowing me to get tons of bane shanty towns and win the curse split 8-2 while rabbling you 3-4 times a turn. But 2 card hands are still fun right?

Game Reports / Really fast double tac
« on: October 05, 2012, 03:25:29 pm »
Just played a game on iso I found really cool, where I opened IW-Silver and had double tac (powered by secret chamber and village + envoy) going by turn 8 and I was double provincing by turn 11 (I could have gotten some single province turns, but decided to wait and buy more card draw to make sure the chain didnt break.)

Game Reports / Who needs treasure? Us apparently.
« on: September 19, 2012, 11:34:24 am »
Just played a really weird colony game.
Board was
King's Court, Hunting Party, Merchant Ship, Counting House, Library, Spice Merchant, Thief, Mining Village, Apothecary, Warehouse

We both go for KC/Hunting Party/Merchant Ship, he is able to green a bit more consistently and races out to a 4-2 lead. Meanwhile we are both spicemerchanting down our treasure. Anyway, I realize that I'm not going to be able to split colonies for a win, so I dip into thief, and he doesn't buy a 2nd merchant ship in time, so eventually its 5-2 colonies, but he's treasureless, if he buys treasure (which he tries a few times) I will just KC Thief for more SM fuel, and I'm able to get enough provinces to eventually win by 2.

I don't think I played that well, but I really liked the strategic move.

Dear Astaro,
I'm sorry you ignored Saboteur like a decent reasonable person after beating me to King's Court, and I'm sorry that there were sufficient alternate victory cards that I could just keep ignoring them for so long to make sure I kept ripping apart your deck... And I'm sorry the game ended with 3 of your Provinces and 4 of your KC's in the trash...

Game Reports / Gardens steals it at the end
« on: September 05, 2012, 10:33:54 am »
Just played a pretty crazy game where opponent got 5-2 and opened tac, and I went pretty hard for gardens w/ hoard, jester, bridge, and duchy/duchess. I ended up buying an estate to 3 pile it getting me to exactly 50 cards and a 4 point win off my 7-1 garden split.

Ok, I'm pretty proud of this trashing. 15 trashes in one turn all off of remodel, starting the turn with only one in the deck.

True, but
a)P1 with militia makes hitting 5 harder (happened on turn 4).
b) Dopplarfx should have bought witch earlier, since torturer seems terrible on that board.

Game Reports / One of the coolest torturer games I've played
« on: August 24, 2012, 11:05:10 pm »
Just finished a really cool Torturer fight with Mr. Eevee. The cool features:
1) Interesting ability to build engine in early game w/ Conspirator Mining Village and Shanty town both being useful and helping get to torturers.
2)  A relatively close midgame fight where we both are able to build up chains, tough curse decisions (with some info from shanty town) and forge to help keep decks running. For most of the midgame I was not sure who was winning the war.
3) A really cool endgame where I think the right play is to transition torturers into double tac through forge and soak up Grand Markets/Conspirators provinces (including some cool microlevel stuff where you draw your deck and forge to get to Tac earlier, tho here Eevee misclicked which unfortunately ended the competitive part of the game.)
4) A game where after all 10 curses are given out that still ended with both players double/triple provincing.

Dominion General Discussion / Building Scrying Pool Decks
« on: August 24, 2012, 12:46:00 am »
So, Scrying Pool decks are awesome, and its one of the cards that I do the best with, but I have a niggling feeling that I'm building wrong. I basically always grab potion w/ 4 or a 4/3, hopefully getting an action w/ 3, and then get pools every time I have 2p. But thinking about this, it seems really really slow (also comparing it to various village openings). When apothecary or university is available I tend to grab those w/ the first 2p and that seems right, but withouth them, might it make more sense to increase your buying power by getting a terminal silver w/ 4 (ideally something like militia, but even a navigator would be pretty good), and then buying potion on the first shuffle, and scrying pool after. Since the pool isnt awesome until you have at least a few actions...

Thoughts?

Got one, and with an engine that was only producing $10 that turn, so it was the best way to end the game (I had a huge lead and a better deck, but I still think it counts). Scrying Pool + Goons + Masquerade leads to weird weird games...

In his defense, you need to focus on building the torturer chain more than economy early... In his anti-defense, the loan buy is terrible. If its a silver he can buy torturers+pawns, and at least buy things once the chain gets going...

Game Reports / Torturer vs. Minion
« on: August 21, 2012, 05:00:54 pm »
Just had an interesting game where my opponent went torturer and I went Minion. Board had good torturer support (Workers and Village, no trashing save Loan) but had awesome Minion support (loan, pawn, grand market). It took my opponent a while to get a tortuer chain set up and I had the awesome Minion/Pawn opener. Thoughts on strategy? I didn't like my opponents getting loan since he'd end up drawing his deck and wanting coin. Also interested in general thoughts on torturer v minion: part of me thinks minion should be in good shape since it can discard twice while still maintaining a minion and not being that effected, but once torturer chains gets going, curses are pretty devastating.

My bad,

this should be the right one.

Also, note I'm pretty sure witch/nothing is more wrong than that since Pawn was available.

Just had a pretty interesting Witch Game, opponent opened Witch/Nothing, I opened Remake/Silver, and to play catch up kept buying remakes. Eventually I was able to win -1 to -3 because we'd run Curses, remakes and festivals (I could have won 5 to -3 but buying a province seemed tacky).

Game Reports / He was asking for it...

So, opponent got ahead on a KC+Governor Board. Luckily it was a colony game, so one of his remodels, I turned my silver into a potion, and picked up a possession. Governor is WAY WAY better when you get the benefit from both sides... (Things could have gotten even more fun but I ended it with one possession turn + a turn with my entire deck in hand left, because I had pangs of conscience)

Game Reports / Scrying Pool + Pirate Ship (no + actions)
« on: August 14, 2012, 01:51:53 pm »
Just had a pretty cool game, where my opponent went for Warehouse/BM and I went for a Scrying Pool/Pirate Ship strategy. Opponent raced out to a 4-1 province lead, but luckily the existence of Fairgrounds + Silk Roads let me wait to start getting provinces and destroy $5 more worth of coin. By the end of the game I was able to draw exactly to the reshuffle and pirate ship for a province every turn while he was struggling to hit silk roads, and he conceded when I got the 2nd to last province (given that I was up 1, and he had only $7 left in his deck of 22 cards). Anyway, I thought it was cool, and it was also the first game I've won with Pirate Ship...

The workshop was huge as it let you continue to build your economy while remaking everything. I think the strategy probably needs something like workshop/ironworks to let you go off quickly enough on province games.

I remember that game! I was pretty impressed with it, tho I played pretty far from optimally, since I vacillated for the first few turns between something cool and Masq BM, before deciding against cool stuff. Anyway, well played.

Game Reports / Lighthouse vs Ambassador
« on: August 12, 2012, 04:09:00 am »
Just finished a really weird game where I went Amb+Silver vs opponents Double Amb, and then I dipped into lighthouses whereas he eventually got up to triple Amb.  Both of us ended up going pretty deep w/ Horde, and I eventually won pretty solidly.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201208/12/game-20120812-010613-71249c8f.html

So, I mostly tried to fight off Ambs w/ Lighthouse because I was curious, and it ended up working, but I'm still kinda skeptical, and I felt like I was losing for a good long chunk of the game.
