Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: Does a resign count as a win/loss
« on: December 08, 2017, 01:57:51 pm »
It might be reasonable someday if the AI is deemed good enough. As things stand now, the bot cannot be trusted not to throw the game to one player, which it could do in a multitude of ways.

Keep in mind, you only break even coming in second if all three players have the exact same rating.

With three or more players, you get a win against the players you beat and a loss against the players that beat you in the rating system.

If someone resigns, it changes the landscape of that game, and may alter the outcome between the two other players. For this reason, the system awards both (all? Not sure about 4-6p) remaining players 1.5 wins against the resigning player, which results in them getting the equivalent of 3 loses (as opposed to 2 if they played out and got last). The player who would have gotten first gets 0.5 less wins, and comes out a bit behind (especially if the other non resigning player is ranked higher). The player who would have come in second ends up a good bit better than they would have at 1.5-0 instead of 1-1.

Dominion Articles / Re: Etiquette in Dominion Online

I strive to always be polite, but some find it rude if I talk during their turn, and others find it rude if I talk on my own turn. Unfortunately, there are also folks who find it rude if I don't talk at all. The only solution is to quit dominion. :(

Gain one thing, then for each subsequent gain reveal Trader with an empty Silver pile.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What do you forget IRL?

Until I played online, I could count the number of times I trashed to an opponent's Bishop on one hand.

So 31 times?
I just tried that and I had a hard time holding my fingers correctly to get above 15.

Is not too bad, but Awaclus is not being imaginative enough. I can easily get to 63 by incorporating palm up/down for another bit. There are also so many ways fingers can articulate other than just up and down.

I even forget scheme online. That end turn button is just too compelling to press.

Does Imp stay out if it plays a Duration? Seems like it could make sense either way.

Edit: I guess whatever Herald's rule is would apply here.

Is Imp a throne variant?

Pros- Lots of cool new card types, and the art is pretty great, especially Cursed Village
Cons- How come Werewolf doesn't care about silver?

Because Silver unfortunately only comes in coin form in the dominion world, and not in the bullet or dagger form.

Rules Questions / Re: Is Cursed Gold a Gold?
« on: October 25, 2017, 11:55:09 am »
Note that whenever a card (or event) uses the name of a card, it means specifically "a card that has this exact name".

Which is why all those fan cards with Curse as a type are idiotic.

Hero says "Gain a Treasure", and Curse has the curse type. I don't love the idea, but I fail to see how it is idiotic, or otherwise incompatible with the rules of Dominion.

Well... GT big money has to be just a tiny bit better than regular big money since it could be used as a mini expedition in the late game, which is probably almost never good, but also the best option in a tiny number of scenarios.

14
Geronimoo did post a simulator result on Discord indicating that Ghost Town/Wharf beat Village/Wharf pretty badly, but that might be too simple a strategy to say too much.

Losing your Pasture or Haunted mirror (with no action card in hand) to a Bandit etc. sounds painful.

Unrelated, Cursed Gold is a pretty big boost to early Trash-for-Benefit.

This happened to me against Rattington today... it took me a few shuffles to figure out where the heck my mirror had gone.

Some javascript to float the kingdom image at the top as you scroll through the discussion for it would be fancy.

That is impressive...
The win Singletee found in chat during the game  was just going to the buy phase, buy a Copper, HoP gain Villa, then draw the last HoP and Copper with Steward. That leaves you enough to pile Villa/Menagerie and buy 2 Estates

I think a non-trivial amount of that decision was based on simplifying (speeding up) the online play. Not just the analysis paralysis involved in the decision, but also the UI interface you have to go through each time to choose the order the cards are returned when most of the time, you just don't care.

I don't personally miss anything about ordering the deck.

We have very few people editing the wiki. I doubt there are eminent issues with edit wars, but I think this is primarily because people who disagree with things on the wiki don't care about the wiki.

For example, if "someone" decided their Loan strategy advice should definitely be on the wiki, and insisted on editing it in, would it potentially cause an edit war? Or take any strategy disagreement you can find in ample supply on this forum and consider if both sides had active investment in the wiki, what happens?

We are fine. Nothing needs to change, but in theory I don't personally agree with it.

If there are valuable (subjective) things on the wiki that aren't anywhere else, I'd consider that an argument for posting those things on the blog, not for keeping them where they are.

...if you see... ...incorrect advice on the wiki... edit it

Correctness is subjective. If everyone does this, it

leads to editing shitstorms.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Cards I would ban / errata
« on: September 29, 2017, 09:26:41 am »
I think Sauna would be a reasonably interesting tasker as a pile on its own without the Avanto thing (maybe cheaper). I also think Sauna/Avanto would be a pretty interesting draw/village option without the trashing on Sauna. As is, it is totally fine, but a bit to "does everything" for my taste. There are obviously boards like Dan's where there are good ways to get draw/actions/trashing and you can do something else. Also, the payload is always different, so it doesn't make the game boring in general.

I think in general split piles would gain something from being 6/6 instead off 5/5 it makes for even numbers in 2 and 3 players, and adds another card to improve "make your opponent dig through the whole top half" strategies.

Your scoreboard that you placed in the bottom left corner blocks how many cards are left in your deck and blocks part of the vp counter as well. You could probably re-position it higher up and narrower ("DB" vs. "R") to avoid blocking these.

The right side of the log/chat is also getting cut off. We want to see your splendid wit!

Thanks JW, I'll be sure to make the window formatting even more obtrusive for next time :)

Most people cover the top of the log with things, but that is the opposite of what you appear to be going for. My recommendation is to place this on top of the province pile.

Secret Passage + Loan

In a game with no way to trash Estates and limited draw, Secret Passage and Loan were a big synergy.  I used the Secret Passages to make sure Loan hit a Copper and skipped over a bunch of green.  After a few turns, Loan was able to skip over all my green.  And once I ran out of Copper, I could bottom-deck all my green and skip past it when I played Loan.

See also Farming Village instead of Loan for the green skipping feature.

Yeah Mandarin/Horn is not very good... mostly because Horn engines are so stupidly good.  The last time I tried Mandarin Horn was a long time ago, but I remember it clearly because I got super crushed by the engine.

Someone on reddit recently posted that the bot was unbeatable unless you mirrored it, so its ability probably isn't a major issue for brand new players. It is competent enough to beat them.
