Rules Questions / Re: Did the Rules Change for Torturer?
« on: August 31, 2017, 01:38:42 am »
Thanks.  I could swear I used to build Torturer chains that would run out the curses once I got my opponent down to a single card, but that must be a death of Nelson Mandela type memory (or inception).

Rules Questions / Did the Rules Change for Torturer?

This is driving me crazy. I thought for sure that Torturer required your opponent to take a curse if they couldn't discard 2 cards (I think both isotopic and gokuworked that way). Did this change, and, if so, when? With the revised edition?

(Or, am I just wrong, and it never worked that way).

Count me among those who would include overpay cards with their nominaly priced cousins.

As an aside, does anyone else feel dirty liking a post by Robz that isn't a Scout joke?  It feels like I'm doing something wrong.

Would be even more fun if you could only buy it by spending coin tokens...

I play golem and reveal a smithy and a village. I play the smithy first, and draw a dead village. Can it trigger or not?
Yes, if you have no actions. Not, if you do. Assuming Golem is your first action and you have no previous duration, you wouldn't have actions before playing the Village, and thus, you could use the reaction.

Wouldn't it be easier to design it as an Action/treasure then that avoid any need for a wording:

Dead Village 4$
+1 Card
+2 Actions

Action/Treasure

I don't think that works.  If you're out of actions, you can't play it as an action.  If you've played a treasure, you can't play any more action cards that round and it doesn't do anything (other than draw the card, I suppose).

Tribute!

Wait...no...

Wandering Minstrel gets the nod from me too - it's sifting helps it set up engines and cycle your deck quickly.

General Discussion / Re: New Laptop Recommendations?

I'd also recommend taking battery life into account.  I bought a new laptop recently, and went through a process where I determined I wanted something lightweight and durable with a long battery life.  Then I somehow managed to get obsessed with having a ten-key and bought on the basis of that after a long day of shopping.  The results have been less than ideal...

Alpha Centauri is the best of the series. Even if it isn't called Civ.

In the spring, the hills near the freeway get thick with purple flowers, and it always looks like the fungus from AC.

I played the demo for Civ V, but I still tend to be a Civ III guy.  Civ IV was decent, but different.

The bot definitely loves to go village idiot on Scheme.  I don't know how many endgames when Scheme is present come down to the bot spamming Schemes, buying another Scheme, and then returning the played Schemes to the top of its deck.

General Discussion / Re: Favorite Pixar Movies?

At the very least the whole scene where she explains how the highway came through and ruined the town that depended on the small road traffic was thought-provoking and inspiring and emotional. I absolutely loved that about Cars, especially given the fact that they were dealing with an actual historical reality in America.

My favorite scenes in Pixar movies tend to be the really dark/painful portions in the middle.  Buzz's attempt to fly in the original TS, the scene in Cars above, Jessie being abandoned (wait...that's in TS2, not TS3, as I said earlier), the toys accepting their death in TS3, etc.

The real power of the TS trilogy for me was watching them as a parent.  If you have a daughter, and don't tear up during the "when somebody loved me" song, you are a heartless, terrible person.

... I'm vaguely offended that anyone could choose something other than Up or TS3...

Heh.  I dunno - there's a real cluster of quality at the top, and there's probably 6-7 movies that I could see as being the best (Up, TS3, Wall-E, Ratatouille).  And really, even the bad stuff is better than nearly every other animated movie and most non-animated movies.

The Incredibles is one of my favorite movies, full stop.  I'm just happy no one has picked Cars 2 or a Bugs Life.  They say there are no wrong answers when it comes to taste, but clearly those answers are objectively wrong.

It's already been pointed out that cards who care about costs less than their own cost don't combo (and sometimes nombo) with Highway.

I'll just take my double moron award for making a comment on something that was already addressed and getting the name of the card wrong, and sit here in the corner practicing reading comprehension.   :-[

Hmmm...actually, now that I think about it, + Buy is probably not as terminal as it once was, particularly given the other Dark Ages cards (Forager, Squire, and Market Square).  Prior to Dark Ages, I think only Pawn, Market, and Grant Market were non-terminal +Buys, but I'm probably missing something...

In regards to CF, I found that my evaluation of the card improved when I started thinking of it as a Moneylender + a Buy + an Action (kinda, given that CF doesn't require an Action).  Don't get me wrong - the ability to trash other non-Copper treasures on top of that is great, but conceptualizing it as an improved Moneylender got me to start playing with the card on a more regular basis.  If nothing else, I find it to be a useful source of Buy in most instances, given that most + Buy cards are terminals.

I like that you point out the TR and KC don't combo with Highway like they do with Bridge, but you might also want to point out one other major non-combo partner: Gang of Misfits.  I played a game the other day with both cards, and had it in my head that GoM would let me copy $5 cost cards after playing a single Highway.  Of course, given that GoM can only copy cards that cost less than it, my cunning plan did not work out in the way I expected...

Dominion Articles / Re: Ambassador

Great article, and I feel bad that the only thing I have to add to the conversation is a minor nit.  The second sentence in the section "Other Junking Attacks" has some verb problems.  I've copied it below:

"You will be able to get ahead, usually, as ambassador is pretty slow, but most often, the game well last well over long enough for the ambassador to come back. "

What's the status of card filters (e.g., create a game using Hinterlands cards and non-VP cards costing $4 or more) and vetoes (e.g., here are 12 cards, each player vetoes 1, then the game starts)?

22
As noted above, the cards that lead to fewer turns don't necessarily lead to shorter turns, so it's important to keep that in mind.  In particular, any kind of deck inspection combined with the card drawing all-stars identified by HME will probably slow things down (the drawing cards plus the deck inspection will mean that you will not only be shuffling a lot, but you'll also have to complete your shuffle before your opponent can complete his/her turn due to the need to inspect your deck).

Just wanted to pop back in and say thanks to those who changed my mind.  Goko has improved since the days of the beta (particularly the way the prompt is now customized for the card action, rather than the cryptic "done" or whatever it used to say), and I'm happy with my purchase.

Other Games / Resources for Pokemon TCG

I bought my kids some Pokemon decks for Christmas (they are 6 and 8 ), and, given that you fine folks seem to have a rash of pokemon infesting your signature blocks, thought you might be able to point me to some good websites for the game.  When I try googling it, I get a bunch of sketchy looking website stores and the like.

Also, if anyone has any thoughts/pointers/tips/etc. for a newb, I'm all ears.

You fine folks convinced me to stop being a cheapskate, and I bought the mega pack last night.  Good times, though I'm still annoyed that I have extra owl coins.
