Game Reports / Re: On not giving in to temptation
« on: December 03, 2011, 07:04:16 am »
I think I'd go with the familiar if cursing is going to be difficult to get and chapel if trashing going to be difficult.  I like the idea of having the only cursing card in play so that even in a short game, my opponent will end up with 3-5 curses leaving me with 0.

(Assuming the reverse: chapel in play and familiar in the BM)

Depends on how many pearl divers I guess.  Scrying pool could get one bad card out of the way.  Many pearl divers could either fail miserably or stack nicely.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: forcing a tie?
« on: September 15, 2011, 10:39:45 pm »
Sometimes a tie is a victory, like in a recent game where my opponent used his opening Jester to knock out my opening Vault on turn three.  I was really happy to get the tie.

It may be lame, but I always grab a tie, because I am already one turn behind and in those situations I have never felt like I had the upper hand.

I was thinking about something similar to this.  If I've been ahead the whole game, I'd probably push for the win.  If I've struggled hard to catch up and he's play 3 wharves on his previous turn, I'd rather take the tie than risk a loss.

Also, Thisisnotasmile is mean.

Dominion General Discussion / forcing a tie?
« on: September 14, 2011, 09:49:11 pm »
So I've been in several situations where I had to decide to force a tie or proceed and go for the win.  I was wondering what others on the board thought of this.

You're behind on provinces, duchies are just about done.  You finally struggle to get back up to $8 and if you buy the last province you know you will tie, but you don't think you can last or you're pretty sure your opponent's next turn is going to be a doozy.

Philosophical question: Should you always be striving for a win, is a tie better than a loss or something else?

When possessing an opponent, it's super fun to play their possessions.  Your opponent will thank you for it!

Dominion Articles / Re: Courtyard/Venture or Loan

Alternatively, put back a Copper to be trashed by your loan or any treasure card to be played by your Venture in the case that you don't really want to put back any cards.

Oh yeah, I've used it for this before, I can't believe I forgot to mention it.

Dominion Articles / Courtyard/Venture or Loan
« on: September 10, 2011, 11:41:41 am »
Pretty simple but quite effective combo:

Play courtyard with venture or loan in your hand (any card that forces you to find something in your deck would work, so Golem works as well, but requires additional actions).  When courtyard forces you to replace a card on your deck, replace a card that you know will be discarded such as an action that you can't play or a victory card of some sort.  The venture/loan will cause the replaced card to be discarded and therefore streamlining your draws in the future.

That's some good science.

I use a threshold of 3 prosperity cards to determine if I'm using platinums/colonies or maybe 2 if there's an especially potent prosperity card in play.

Since I'm Canadian, I know dutchie best as one of these:

A big square honey glazed donut with raisins.

Witha green monstar running away with a routerlike thingy.
Had to check myself just because of this. Love it.

So no, no dice here either.

Dice?  You sir, are playing the wrong game!

I've thought many times that an Action - Curse would be interesting.  Would you buy KC at $5 if it was -2 VP?

It would allow undercosting of actions with the curse tradeoff.

I use card sleeves.  You'll want to buy about 10% more than you need because they don't last forever.  Remember to buy the same colour for all your cards.

estate tennis = players using Ambassador to repeatedly pass Estates between them turn after turn
I'd also accept pingponging

A neat twist on powercards would be variations on current cards that are either undercosted or overpowered because they are hybrid curses.

Ignobles

Cost 4

Choose one: +3 cards or +2 actions

-2 VP

Some guy did 6-7 colonies in 1 turn with horns.  I was trying to race him by draining provinces, it didn't work!

I also try to acknowledge when luck was a big factor in my win (particularly in the opening -- if I open 5/2 on a board with Witch or something).  And I never complain about my opponent's good luck -- that's totally rude.

This happened to me today after I locked down my opponent in a ghost ship/torturer deal.  I had two of each and some villages and he claimed I was 'super lucky' and rage quit on me.

Another achilles heel of the alchemist deck is masquerade.  It forces you to discard some alchemists or possibly give them to your opponent.

Whereas Scout is simply terrible 90% of the time, ok 5% of the time, and awesome 5% of the time.

This is really well put.

Feedback / Re: Isotropic feedback?
« on: June 24, 2011, 07:42:54 pm »
I think the only preset I've ever played with was 'first game' from the base set rulebook.  It has a little bit of everything you need to get someone's feet wet with dominion.  On the other hand, I'm not sure how good it would be to teach someone to play on isotropic anyhow.

Feedback / Isotropic feedback?
« on: June 23, 2011, 10:07:53 pm »
Is there a more efficient way than posting here to give isotropic feedback?  I was wondering if there's anyway to add some preset kingdom cards to isotropic.  I'm going to be teaching some people to play in the future and I'd like to start with 'first game' or some such from the instruction book.

Although scout isn't a great card by any means it can counter deck stacking attacks like fortune teller and ghost ship (assuming you put victory cards down).  I'd say situational at best.

This sounds like something to put on the 'info' page so that players can look at it if they want but is generally out of the way.

@randal:
Do I see it right that you would have won if you bought a curse the last turn?

I don't think the game would have ended in that case.
