Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: A small nugget of info
« on: February 21, 2013, 07:38:35 pm »
I recalled that we had a list of costs in another thread, so looked there to see what UBguild was priced at...

But this is the list:

BEguild ($4)
CBguild ($5)
CVguild ($5)
DNguild ($2)
EPguild ($3)
GPguild ($3)
HVguild ($5)
IFguild ($4)
NHguild ($5)
NJguild ($2)
TPguild ($5)
UWguild ($4)
UYguild ($4)

You'll note UB isn't there.  Hm.

Just a thought - does anyone have a list of card names in DXV's native tongue?

BEguild ($4) Beggar
CBguild ($5)
CVguild ($5) Caravan
DNguild ($2)
EPguild ($3) Explorer
GPguild ($3)
HVguild ($5) Harvest
IFguild ($4)
NHguild ($5)
NJguild ($2)
TPguild ($5) Trading Post
UWguild ($4)
UYguild ($4) University

Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: So. Guilds.

I'm going to make a wild guess that Guilds will have a "cards that care about card types" theme.

So it'll have Jester, Fortune Teller, Ironworks, Farming Village, Wandering Minstrel, Bank and Knights in it?

Luckily, there's still a lot to enjoy on this site even if you're not playing Dominion online.
There's mafia, Diplomacy (c'mon guys, register!)

I thought you liked people here?

It wasn't on Iso, but I was mucking around learning Dark Ages in Androminion when I noticed a combo on the board.  A few turns later, and I'd won a two-player non-Colony game with 85 points.

Remaking Feodum into Graverobber makes my Dominion-willy hard. :D

As does the Ruins pile, now!

It's especially problematic on goko, because the ruin pile isn't clearly visible.

Reasons Why Goko Sucks, number 277 in a series of 300.

Also, if you want to get rid of the coin, you could just use birth dates. If the month you were born is even, stay seated, if odd get up and find a chair. For the leftovers, use the day for odd/even. Third iteration use the year for odd/even. I believe three rounds should be sufficient to make any remainder a trivial sorting problem that doesn't need to scale.

Not really.  One in ten people will still be in their original seat.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Dark Ages on Iso a Possibility?
« on: September 01, 2012, 04:19:09 am »
I think the idea is that there will be pent-up demand. Like, maybe there would be people who have there fill of Dark Ages on isotropic over the next few weeks, such that they're no longer willing to pay when it switches to isotropic. Or maybe I'll be so Dark Ages starved that I'll pay whatever goko wants just to get to try it.

I know what the idea is.  On the other hand, by the same logic there will be no pent-up demand for anything but Dark Ages because we've had the chance to play all the other expansions to death.  That would be a reasonable thing to say if Dominion expansions were completely self-contained, but they're not; quite the reverse, they're designed for mix-and-match gameplay.  The only way people are going to get bored of Dark Ages in a few weeks is if it is a bad set that doesn't interact well with the others.

I think that Knights as a whole should appear on the $5 list, and then the individual Knights should get their own.

Did anybody ever vote for Tournament on the basis of what the card does, or did they vote for it based on the Prizes?  We know the answer to that.  Knights will be no different.

I wouldn't like to see base cards included in the voting.  It was already time-consuming to do the 2012 votes, and that's only going to get worse with DA and possibly Guilds being included.

*raises hand*

I'm more likely to buy Goko because DA is not on isotropic. Not at the ridiculous 75$, but still more likely to buy it.

DXV is right: holding back DA from isotropic is good economic sense for Goko/RGG

Both you and Donald have missed one fundamental point: Isotropic is not in competition with Goko.  By the time DA is available to buy on Goko, there will be no Isotropic and therefore DA will not be on it.

10
Seriously. There would be zero downside to them (except the embarrassment factor) to just buying iso...
Except they want to go beyond Dominion.  If they used isotropic then they couldn't go to other people and say, "Hi, look at this thing Dominion which we programmed please let us make your official application."

I guess that's included in embarrassment factor but it's a really big deal to a new company.

So you think there's no embarrassment factor in Goko having failed to do with $8m in funding what two other guys have already done by themselves in their spare time for free?  This failure to launch is a huge blow for them.

By my calculations, if you buy in the smallest batches of gokoins ($1 = 10 gokoins), making each set $6, that should be $78 overall, not including Guilds.  It'd be cheaper if you bought the gokoins in bulk.

How many purchases are required to get everything?

It's hard to find a good handicap for dominion.

With a beginner, spotting them two Provinces in the "Island zone" would be a decent handicap.  Effectively winning 7-1 isn't always easy.

To some people - I'm not saying you have to agree with them, but only, look at this, turn it over in your mind - to some people, this question would seem a lot like: Sure you can see Batman: The Dark Ages Rise in theaters... but as long as it isn't available on DVD yet, can we all torrent it?

That's a very poor analogy, Donald.  Dark Ages is not a movie that you only want to see once in a while but has a period where you can't see it legally.  It's a game that people want to play repeatedly and indefinitely.  If I want to see a movie after it's left cinemas but before the DVD release then I have to torrent it.  Technically, that removes any need for me to buy the DVD because I will still have my torrented copy after the DVD comes out.  However, if Dark Ages was put on Iso then I could play there for free - but when Goko goes live for real I will have to pay if I want to play because Iso will go away and I won't have my "torrented copy" any more.

Goko would not be losing money if Dark Ages was on Iso because they're not making any money from it so long as they remain in beta.  The idea that there is only a window where they can make peak profit from DA is a bad one, as it will encourage them to rush through the revision process and release another buggy product that will drive even more people away.  The idea is also wrong, unless Dark Ages is not a set that people will want to play with and would feel suckered out of their money if they bought it.

It's back into beta so all of the issues will, hopefully, be fixed

There will now be a short pause for hysterical laughter.

The lack of offline play on the iPad, for instance, is a shitstorm waiting to happen.

Seriously, can someone explain why this would be?

Because basically every other deckbuilding game adapted for the iPad has it, and because not everyone's iPad is in a Wifi hotspot at all times.  Also see Diablo III.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion uh...misconceptions
« on: August 15, 2012, 06:18:37 pm »
My absolute favorite BGG thread was in the Variants forum at a time shortly following, I think, the release of Intrigue.  Someone proposed the following fan card:

I havn't come up with a viable name for this card, but my brother came up with the idea.
It basically works as a remodel, but with the new card having a value of THREE coins more than the original card. This would mean that you could easily turn cost five cards into provinces, which would give it alot of power. My initial thoughts would be that it would cost six coin. Any thoughts?

The idea came under instant criticism:

Misses the point of the $7 gap.
Cost 5 cards are very plentiful; this turns those (including duchies) into provinces.
Cost 3 cards become gold.
There's no reason not to take this card, and would turn every game that it is in into a race for it.

The thread devolved into a heated debate about the importance of the $7 gap -- all the rage, pre-Prosperity -- until someone chimed in with the lighthearted remark:

Maybe Super Remodel should cost 7.

That Vaccarino boy, what a joker.

Highway-Highway-KC-KC-Saboteur-Saboteur-Graverobber.  Saboteur will trash six things in your opponent's deck nominally worth at least $5, and Graverobber can nab half of those up.
Better yet, play 4 Highways first, so you trash 6 of their Provinces and get 3 of them for yourself. 54 VP swing right there, yeah.

A more realistic play: KC-KC-Highway-Sab-Graverobber.  Draw 3 cards, trash 3 cards worth 6+, then steal them all.  Bonus points awarded for stealing your opponent's KCs because he's trying the same trick.

Steward has the same issue. What do you do with a Steward + 4 Copper hand on turn 4?

Buy Gold?

21
Contraband exists, therefore Venture is worse.

To be precise: Contraband exists, therefore Venture is worse if you are daft enough to buy Contraband.

22
I think [Explorer is] better than Mandarin for Gardens because gaining cards will boost Gardens.

Yes, sorry, I thought Mandarin had +buy for some reason.  Perhaps because that would make it good.

23
Explorer still seems grossly underrated, it is a great card for alternate VP.

I don't see how Explorer works with any alternative VP strategy.  It clashes with all the VP chip cards, does nothing for Silk Road, is almost irrelevant for Fairgrounds, is inferior to Mandarin for Gardens and can be replaced with any better action for Vineyard.  Would you mind explaining your reasoning?

This forum needs a Godwin's law style term for when a thread devolves into a discussion of how awful and/or underrated Chancellor is.

We don't need a separate law.  Hitler's official title from 1933-1945 was Chancellor of Germany.

25
The big thing about smugglers is that it is like mine and remodel.  You need to be able to play it just about every turn.  On a board with spice merchant or warehouse, you call pull smugglers out pretty quick and keep slapping them down.  The only problem is, you need to be sure that there's *something* your opponent is gonna buy that will let you get more money.

Going first is enough of an advantage in Dominion that if the game ends in a tie on the first player's turn, he loses.  Buying Smugglers is at best choosing to play your opponent's strategy but allowing him to go first.
