Dominion General Discussion / Black Market Deck App or Website?
« on: July 25, 2016, 01:06:05 pm »
With Empires, my Dominion box can no longer hold the randomizer deck (which is absurdly large to begin with).  Therefore I need an artificial Black Market deck.  Can anyone point me to a Black Market Deck simulator, either on the internet or an iOS app?

Ideally it would pick n random cards, then have a "draw button," where it shows you the top three cards.  Then you can pick one or zero, remove the picked card from the pool, and put the other two back on the bottom of the stack.  Card art is a bonus but not necessary.

Should be easy to make.  I made one in Mathematica, but that's where my programming skills end.  Hopefully someone has made a more portable version.

I never thought I would *miss* Goko. I really hope people have lost their jobs with as badly as Rio Grande has screwed up Dominion. It's just a carnival of errors.

Honestly, the thing I want the most from Gokoo is some mechanism to save my game when the connection glitches. Remember how on iso, you could close the browser, open it on another computer, and the game would be there waiting for you?

It astonishes me how one guy in his basement did a better job programming this thing than a team of Goko programmers. *pours one out for iso and DougZ*

Thank you. This is the best deckbuilder I've seen, I think. Really appreciate the customizability.

Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: Coins
« on: June 14, 2013, 04:23:42 am »
Just played my first game with Guilds, it was pretty sick: http://dominionlogs.goko.com//20130614/log.514f5abbe4b0b79c883bafb8.1371197759671.txt

tl;dr: Kingdom had Candlestick Maker, Scrying Pool, Chapel. Got 3 SPs, 9 CSMs, trashed every other card in the deck, then got 9 coin tokens per turn until I had 64 and bought out the Provinces.

Not saying this will happen often, but it does illustrate the potential power of coins.

Dominion General Discussion / The best time to ignore Ambassador
« on: May 20, 2013, 10:12:25 pm »
I just played kind of a cool game: http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130520/log.514f5abbe4b0b79c883bafb8.1369101179722.txt

It's hard to imagine a better board for ignoring Ambassador. There's Duke, Duchess, Gardens, and no engine to speak of. I gladly absorb all the coppers and estates, end up with 8 Duchies, 6 Dukes, 10 Duchesses, and some Gardens for 96 points.

Obviously this is an extreme (and not particularly hard to spot) example, but it does pose an interesting question: when is it desirable to ignore Ambassador? How many of these elements need to be present? What others features of a kingdom make you want to ignore Ambassador? I guess Chapel usually means Ambassador's a no-go, but maybe there are others.

Thoughts?

With a Watchtower in hand and Squire on the board, Scrying Pool and Familiar only cost $2. (Really specific, I know, but it just happened to me and it was awesome. Quarry and Festival, too.)

Thanks for the input! I think I'm going with German-style board games because there's a wikipedia page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German-style_board_game

I'm filling out the "Interests an Hobbies" section on a form, and calling my hobby "board-gaming" just doesn't seem to do it justice. I'm playing Dominion, Pandemic, and RftG, not Monopoly and Life. Is there a better phrase to describe *these* kinds of games?

Prosperity
"This is the 4th addition to the game of Dominion. It adds 25 new Kingdom cards to Dominion, plus 2 new Basic cards that let players keep building up past Gold and Province. "
(emphasis added)

IMHO, this is the best textual evidence that Ruins are Basic cards, as it shows that cards need not be used in every game to be considered Basic. Absent that feature, Ruins are no different from Curses. As such, if Curses are Basic, Ruins should be, too.

I miss councilroom a lot, but really, I just want a way to look at my past games. Are they logged anywhere else where we could see them?

You could collect the links to your logs after you play games and then start your own little collection.

I've actually started doing that. Catalogues of "Ambassador games", "IGG games" "Crazy KC games", etc. God I'm lonely.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Dark Ages on Iso a Possibility?
« on: September 01, 2012, 03:01:46 am »
*raises hand*

I'm more likely to buy Goko because DA is not on isotropic. Not at the ridiculous 75$, but still more likely to buy it.

DXV is right: holding back DA from isotropic is good economic sense for Goko/RGG

Both you and Donald have missed one fundamental point: Isotropic is not in competition with Goko.  By the time DA is available to buy on Goko, there will be no Isotropic and therefore DA will not be on it.

I think the idea is that there will be pent-up demand. Like, maybe there would be people who have there fill of Dark Ages on isotropic over the next few weeks, such that they're no longer willing to pay when it switches to isotropic. Or maybe I'll be so Dark Ages starved that I'll pay whatever goko wants just to get to try it.

To some people - I'm not saying you have to agree with them, but only, look at this, turn it over in your mind - to some people, this question would seem a lot like: Sure you can see Batman: The Dark Ages Rise in theaters... but as long as it isn't available on DVD yet, can we all torrent it?

That makes sense to me. Thanks for your answer! Now I just can't wait until my local store gets a copy....

You're probably right. I guess the logic would be this: even if iso gets Dark Ages for the last few weeks of its life, people who want to play with DA will have to go to goko regardless once iso shuts down.

Given the message on goko.com:

Hello Everyone

As you probably know by now, the first 48 hours of Goko’s public life didn’t go well.
As we moved out of beta and into the live world, we learned that we had problems
with our backend and weren’t able to scale fast enough to support the load.
As a result, we experienced numerous problems and created a really bad experience
for the fans trying to access our games or even get on our website.

We sincerely apologize to the fans trying to play our games and to the broader tech
and HTML5 communities that showed so much support for our vision at launch.
We've made the decision to roll our games and game site back into beta for testing.
We will go live again when it's ready. We’d love to say that will happen tomorrow or
next week, but that’s not the right way to proceed.

If you want to help us test the games before they go live again, or test future games
from Goko, please click here to become a beta tester. Everyone will eventually get in
and we’ll add people as quickly as we can.

Sincerely,

The Goko Team

Is it suddenly possible we might be able to enjoy Dark Ages on Isotropic in the meantime? DXV, are you in a position to comment on this? I don't want to get my hopes up, but man, that would be great.

(P.S. good on Goko for taking more time to polish their product)

If that happens, the question becomes: will the powers that be allow Dark Ages to go public on isotropic?

Other Games / Re: What should I do once Isotropic goes down?
« on: August 13, 2012, 06:51:02 pm »
Isotropic will go down the day after I leave for my first year of law school, which is good, because otherwise I would fail out of law school. I'm imagining myself like Morgan Freeman at the end of The Dark Knight, where he intentionally shuts down the sonar machine because it's too much power for one man to have.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Iso being down = preparing for Dark Ages?
« on: August 06, 2012, 11:59:32 pm »

I know nothing of this server trouble, but at this point I do not expect public isotropic to ever get Dark Ages cards.

Wait--ever?? Even if Goko isn't up and running for several more months? Or do you just mean we won't get to play with the preview cards before the official release? Much thanks if you could clarify this, Donald X.

Wait a minute--how certain are we that Isotropic is going down? Can anyone official comment on this?

On the other hand, after three months and 1250 games, having Isotropic shut down would be like waking up after a long coma and getting back to living my actual life.
