Dominion Articles / Re: Etiquette in Dominion Online

It's not clear from your post whether you got an undo on your own misclick.

If you did not ask for an undo, or if you asked for an undo and was not granted one, then I think your move wasn't unsporting at all.  It wasn't sporting, but it also isn't unsporting.  It's just baseline expected behavior.

If you did get an undo, then I think your move is slightly unsporting.  But I wouldn't consider it egregiously out of line.  One never has an obligation to agree to an undo, except maybe if the opponent had granted one to you.

The respect system is going nowhere.  The whole point of it is supposed to be a way to silently express approval or lack thereof.  Indeed I would have thought it would have solved the problem people had in this thread.

Imagine this thread ends after post #17.  Would that be the kind of thread we want, or don't want, on this forum?

Chris, I wouldn't agree with the sentiment that a 0 upvote un-responded post signals acceptance.  I think you should give readers some credit.  As someone who doesn't closely follow the forum it was pretty clear to me that the Loan fork of the thread was both an irrelevant nitpick and also not particularly well-received.

Awaclus, it also seems clear that your Loan opinion has both been made clear and also not accepted by the majority.  So continuing to make it in a thread that obviously was never about Loan doesn't really do anything as far as making your opinion more accepted.

That being said, it seems pretty clear to me that this particular debate is best served by a titanic grudge match under mutually-agreed-upon parameters, with the stakes being either a temp ban, or agreeing to add to every post "I was wrong about Loan" for a week.

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: A user report feature?

I looked over this case (user was reported to me). While the "play faster" guy is indeed being a jerk, he isn't actually breaking any rules. I can't justify banning him. However, situations like this are what the blacklist feature is for (on both sides). If you don't want to encounter him again, just blacklist him. Irrelevant if he blacklisted you already, of course.

Wait, do you work for Shuffle IT now? Or you're a moderator/admin or something?
He volunteers in this banning-people capacity.

Dispensing vigilante justice in your free time is basically the American dream, after all.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Tom Vasel Nocturne Review
« on: December 14, 2017, 06:10:59 pm »
I just watched Vasel's review of Nocturne.  Although I do agree with some of what he says, mostly I just got a kick out of it.  It was funny, because it was pretty obvious that he doesn't really know what he's talking about when it comes to dominion.

I watch his reviews for lots of games I am interested in, but this makes me wonder how well he explains them.  He described ghost saying "you can look through your deck and set aside an action card".  He neglected to mention the part that is actually good about ghost.  He also just said a lot of things wrong.

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: Undo Trolling
« on: December 08, 2017, 01:51:29 pm »
am i the only person that thinks the undo trolling in the OP is hilarious?  if that happened to me i would chuckle and throw up my hands.  that is some high-tier BM

i see the argument for living in a world with automatic no-info undos.  but that's hard to implement and vulnerable to bugs.  it's perfectly reasonable to not live in that world, and once you're not in that world, it's incumbent on you to know that all undos are strictly at the grace of your opponent.

It would be easier to simply write a bot that automatically makes these kinds of jokes, so that the rest of us don't have to.

News and Announcements / Forum crash

So I goofed.  As I said in the Discord:

the admin panel was like PLS UPGRADE
and i was like ok but don't you need like PHP 5.4
and it was like nah it's cool 5.3 is good
and i was like do i really need to upgrade the forum is fine
so i clicked upgrade
and it immediately broke
because i didn't have PHP 5.4

But I undid the update, eventually.

tristan 4.0 is banned.

I'm like 99% sure you're joking, but, you are joking, right? That would be the quickest witch hunt ever if not.

More on topic: I don't know that I think Josh was being condescending until after he was first accused of being condescending, although I should admit I haven't read those other two threads Trivialknot linked to. I agree with Seprix though, deescalation would be good, because this has been a very enjoyable thread so far, and it'd be cool to keep it like that
I wasn't joking.  And I was confident in my analysis, which I would be happy to share with you over PM.

It is a common complaint for many games, but personally I consider those to be bugs of the gaming group, not of the game.  What's the point of playing a game where a heavy player has no advantage over a casual player?

The blame-game-for-gaming-group-problem phenomenon is most common in reviews of coop games, where people solemnly point out that Pandemic is a bad game because one time someone took over a newbie game and dictated everyone's moves.  It's not the game's fault you're playing with jerks.

Good catch.  Perhaps a past graduate student, though!

Are we 8 for 8 on the quarterfinalists being undergraduate or graduate students?

As I have been from the start, I'm still unsure how best to address the post-game 'gg'.
It depends on whether you think this guide should, ahem, describe online etiquette as it exists, or prescribe how it ought to be ;)

I came in first place in my division in the tennis tournament my school went to today, and our school took second place!

The number of participants is not important.  The question is how many times each person is willing to vote.  Basically you show people, over and over again, a random set of 4 cards, asking them what is the best and what is the worst.  After enough iterations you have some solid Bayesian data on how those cards are tiered.

I strongly, strongly recommend whoever is making the list to try out MaxDiff sorting.

Basically, humans suck at ranking long lists of things.  Is Cutpurse the 47th best card?  Or the 48th?

So instead, we create a system where people are given randomly-selected sets of 4 cards, and asked to rank the best and worst out of those 4.  It's easy, and ends up producing a ton of data for very little mental cost.
