Title: Rule Change Proposal: Drawing Beyond 10
Post by: fp on November 22, 2013, 12:01:08 pm
I've noticed that Measurement and Almanac allow for for some quick games *especially* with No Place. It just seems like a silly way for the game to end. That said I would like to propose the following:

If you would draw a card beyond 10, draw a 10 instead. If you cannot, the game ends...

Agree with this change. Although by itself, it doesn't really fix how messed up Almanac and Measurement are..

Don't give Archimedes a clock, or he's liable to cause a technological singularity

Measurement and Almanac are stupid.  I was thinking maybe measurement works for n/2 cards in the stack (or just a splay right and drawing an age 5 card would be plenty sick already, not to mention the bonus city card you get from splaying...), and almanac instead of scoring and drawing 1 age higher, just foreshadow a card EQUAL to the bonus that you scored, not one higher.

I agree that nerfing Measurement and Almanac as suggested by ksasaki is probably more important.  While opinions may differ, I consider the Archimedes + Clock interaction quite nifty (but that's also because it's much rarer than Measurement or Alchemy tech-ups).

Clock [4]:  ...I demand you draw three [10]... etc.

Archimedes [2]:  ...If you would take a dogma action, first increase every age value in each dogma and echo effect by one.

Basically, Archimedes forces your opponent to draw three [11]s, ending the game immediately, and very early, in favor of whoever has the higher score.

Yeah...see previous answer

The real reason Almanac is overpowered is because of the Echoes rule change for drawing.

It used to be that you would use one mixed deck of Echoes/Base cards and draw from that deck. But it proved an unbearable amount of setup to count out the proper mix of 10 decks AND shuffle them.

Under those rules, Almanac (and Watermill.. and Industrialization..) could not be set up to draw an Echoes card every time.

But now, you can, because Almanac (and Watermill.. and Industrialization..) consume the cards you draw, so you just spam them once you're set up to draw Echoes.

How about this for a rule change: the SECOND card you draw in your turn is an Echoes card. The first is base, the third is base, the fourth is base, etc.

Unfortunately this, unlike the current draw rule, requires memory.

Online you could just draw 30% echoes and 70% base possibly with a counter that flips after every draw so that you know what draw was next.  (Or go back to the old rules for that matter.)
