Liopoil?
-
oh, yeah. Never played with expansions before, need to read rules and stuff :P
-
So, we are playing with both cities AND leaders? should I just look for a rules link on boargamegeek?
-
okay, found rules. For leaders, it seems that we're supposed to have hands of 4 leaders to begin with, we pass, then we have 3, and pass again, 2, then just get whatever leader we are passe for the last one. I have 5 leaders in my current hand. Also, when we chose these leaders, they just go in our "leader-hand", they are not played immediately, right? then at the start of each age, we play one, which can also be discarded or built wonder with.
-
Yes you have it correct. We are playing alternate draft rules where we start with an extra leader. This way, you get a choice of two for your fourth leader. We will still end up with 4 leaders. These rules were actually proposed by the designer on his website.
-
okee dokee. I suppose they only work for games with fewer than 6 players though, because otherwise there wouldn't be enough leaders to go around?

Well there are 42 leaders in the list in the OP, so it should be doable even with 7 players. I think there's enough even with Rome and Catan pulling extra leaders.
-
ahh, I assumed there would only be 28 because why make more than might be used? I guess they're like guilds. Also cities seem to be like that too... we're choosing 3/9 for those right?
-
Ah, sorry, should have made variant rules in use more explicit. The rules we're using are:
Base+Cities+Leaders+Wonder Pack (no promos)
Choose 1 of 3 wonders at game start
5 Leader hand variant (official variant). Last hand is a choice of 2.
Debt will default to 'pay all' unless you ask to do otherwise before a hand (this is to facilitate online play).
For cities, 3/9 are chosen, yes. You don't get to see which ones they are, like Guilds.

and debt cannot be repayed, right? it's just -1 point, not matter what.
can you chose to take dept? say, if I want to build something, but I need another wood, but I only have 1 coin, can I pay someone 1 coin and take 1 dept? If that's allowed, does the person I am paying take another coin from the bank?
oh snap, just realized - The first hand we got we will get again, for the leaders (well, also the age). should have taken that into account. It's okay though I think.
for the normal ages, we will see the cards in rounds 1, 2, 3, and 4 again, right? because we are playing with 8 card hands to start, and building 7 a round.

That sounds correct. Also note that we start with $6 instead of $3.
On debt, yes you choose whether to pay or to take the -VP, and you cannot repay it later after you take the -VP. But to speed up the game, we are defaulting to "pay if possible". So if you don't want to pay, let Tables know in advance, maybe with rules like "always keep a minimum of $X". In a IRL game, you would have to decide on what to do with debt before seeing your next hand.

okay, so you CAN take on an optional cost that you can't afford. I know you get dept when someone makes you lose money w/black cards, but you can also choose to build something that you must take dept to pay for? hmmmm. Probably hardly ever a good idea, but that's interesting.

No, I think that was eHalc misinterpreting question. You can only take debt when forced to pay due to the debt mechanic.

I also chose my leader recruitment action for Age I.
Edit: Tables, it's in the QT that I sent to you. Let me know if you want me to PM you instead.
-
I would prefer to get things via PMs, it's one less place I need to check.
-
Everyone should have their final hand of Leaders drafted. Time to choose your first Leader.
-
Any movement on this?
-
Checking my PMs. By my record I'm waiting for Lio to make a selection, but I might have just missed it.
-
Yeah, I haven't chosen. hopefully will tonight.

Sorry for the delay. Something weird happened, and now something else weird has happened. I'm trying to figure out what it is.
Something weird with the game? Mis-passed cards or something?
-
I was trying to work out why one hand was bigger than the others. Turns out I forgot to remove a card that was played from it, and annoyingly it was the one that was chosen by the next player.
-
It would have just happened though, right? So it's fixable?
-
Yeah it's easy enough to fix now I've identified the issue. When I made that first post I still wasn't sure. Hopefully now we can have the game running at full speed again.

So how does Diplomacy work in 3p? I don't fight lio twice, do I?
You and lio only fight once. Davio is skipped this Age. So if things stay as they currently are (military strength-wise), you would get a single +3 victory token, and liopoil would get a single -1 defeat token.

Also, facepalm... I used my free build on the temple... when I could have gotten it for free via chain!

Just so you could stack more blue?

... I was hoping davio would pass on the courthouse :(
Looks like Davio's tableau is still missing the Courthouse.
-
Yes... MORE BLUE! Also, should I have 4 coins, not 5?
-
Also, facepalm... I used my free build on the temple... when I could have gotten it for free via chain!
I have no problem with letting you go back to change that. Doesn't really change my decisions, and I don't think it would have changed Davio's either. In team game, I think it would actually have been illegal to use the free build on something you could chain.
-
Oh hey, Davio has to pay someone for a second Brick to build Courthouse. I am not sure if he can choose lio, given that it was built on the same turn... but probably?
-
Oh hey, Davio has to pay someone for a second Brick to build Courthouse. I am not sure if he can choose lio, given that it was built on the same turn... but probably?
Ugh, I did tell him that, but added it to the summary section of the sheet anyway. That's why it's missing from his tableau though, he never did fully pay. He pays eHalc because Lio didn't have Brick at the time, I think. Also I'm fine allowing Lio's free build to be used elsewhere.

I thought you were allowed to pay someone for a resource they build that turn. You just can't rely on it (like, "I'll use this for my wonder unless my neighbour builds Stone this turn"; you have to decide which action in advance). But maybe I am misremembering those rules.
-
I seem to remember that you can't purchase resources built that turn. I'm not sure though.
I don't see why I should be able to use my free build. It's entirely my fault that I used it on something I could have gotten for free.
And I also think I should only have 4 coins. I had two on hand 5. I discarded a card, bringing me to 5 coins. Then just now I spent one on the brickyard. That should bring me to 4.
EDIT: all three of the above things I said work against me. What's wrong with me?!!?

You can't buy from resources played during a turn because you need to decide how to pay for a card before building it.
I'm saying you get your free build, and nobody would care in a casual game IRL, and this is just a casual game but on a forum.
-
well, if you want to give it to me, I'll take it :P
question: can I use my free build on a wonder stage? or is that technically not a "build"

As I recall, you cannot free build the wonder stage.
And yeah, you should be at 4 coins.
Edit:
I think you should still have your free build according to the rules. Certainly in the team game, you HAVE to use chains and you HAVE to use all your own resources if possible. This is to prevent free money transfer (e.g. I have a lot of coin but my partner does not; even so, it is against the rules to pay my partner for his resource if I don't actually need to).
I believe this applies to the regular game as well. You chain if you can, and you use your own resources before buying them. This prevents blatant king making (I'm losing so I'm just going to give all my money to Bob!). It can also have a negative effect. Suppose you get Berenice as your third leader. With your cards, you can buy a grey from someone for $1, then get $1 from Hatshepsut and an extra $1 from Berenice to get a net gain of money. But suppose also that you have a Loom. I believe that, in this scenario, you would not be allowed to buy Cloth to trigger the combo, since you already have Cloth.
Now does this all apply to Olympia's free build? Meh. I think it's close enough.
-
Yeah, I was thinking that same thing. It does indeed apply to the normal game - clarified by the designer on BGG. However does it apply to Olympia? That's definitely more of a stretch. I'd say probably not, but, whatever. For all the difference it makes you both know Lio's last hand, he has a card he can build for free, or a card he can build for effectively free through leaders+discounts, giving someone else a coin. I don't think it's worth thinking about too much for the sake of this game.

Oops. That one isn't automatic like the rest.

I can't think of any leader that combos particularly well with Tomyris. I was wondering if there were a leader that gave VP for opponent's victory tokens or defeat tokens, but there is not. The Diplomacy leader, maybe? But you can always use that in AIII; Tomyris doesn't really do anything special with that.

no, it's unrelated to Tomyris. That was just when I decided my general gameplan. This leader has no benefit of playing prior to age 3 (Tomyris and hatshepsut do).

You can tell us now, since all leaders are done... :P
Kind of combo? Maybe one of the military leaders? Tomyris discourages others from going military, which maybe gives that player a chance to jump in and get surprise wins. But that's kind of self-conflicting. I don't know.
I should have expected Varro and Nebuchadnezzar, but I did not.
As for this hand... tough choices. Even with those leader reveals, I don't have a handle on what you guys would do. We pass to the left now, which means I pass to lio, correct?

Don't I?
OK, I don't, but I was speaking more in the general sense, and in the sense of what you will do with the cards in my hand. Because you'll both have hard choices to make with this hand. ;)
In the general sense, there were several hands in Age II where I predicted you guys would do one thing and then you went and did another.
Anyway, I've made my choice. When you post that you've made yours, lio, I'll send my hand to you.
-
Can I claim to have made my choice when I really haven't? No no, that wouldn't be in the spirit of the game now would it...
I'm waiting for a rules clarification from tables.
-
I'll say at the end. I think my normal thoughts on Bilkis strategy work a little differently in 3 player games, though.
-
Okay , I'm done now (for real)
-
I'll say at the end. I think my normal thoughts on Bilkis strategy work a little differently in 3 player games, though.
Bilkis is a really weird leader. Some people think it's overpowered (so flexible!) and some that it's really weak (so expensive!). I find it very hard to pass on Bilkis, but also have to think carefully before actually using her. Starting Age I with just $2 is tough, and Bilkis drains even more of that money. I chose Bilkis on turn 1 of the leader draft and lucked into Macenas soon after that. Croesus was also an option (in the final draft turn, I think) and it could have paired nicely with Bilkis to alleviate money concerns, but I also wanted Pythagoras so Macenas looked amazing there.
@lio, sending now.
-
Bilkis is a natural fit for a Wonder that generates cash.
-
Sorry. When I said Bilkis, I meant Tomyris. Regarding Bilkis, I think a Bilkis play age I leaving you with 2 coins is only a good idea if you're going science. Otherwise your money is too limited in age I, and the effect just isn't useful age I.
-
Bilkis is a natural fit for a Wonder that generates cash.
Definitely, but it doesn't make starting with $2 much better.
In my position, would you have started with Bilkis in Age I, considering that I had Macenas? Also considering that Pythagoras was a choice too? My final leader draft was Justinian vs. Croesus. My thoughts were -- if I start with Bilkis, then Croesus is strictly better than Macenas in Age II. Justinian and Pythagoras are both interesting VP leaders, with Justinian likely to be better if another player goes for Science. China is a pretty good wonder for Science so that was a possibility (especially since I knew that Davio had a chance to take a good science leader).
In the end, I decided that starting with Bilkis was too risky. Ideally I would get one of the choice browns, which costs $1. with Bilkis, I would be left with only $1, and then if I use Bilkis (e.g. to get a green card) then I would be broke. I don't want to be broke when debt is possible. Yeah I could just build a wonder stage, but then I need to have those resources, which isn't always possible.
So I started with Macenas, planning to build early resources like usual, then get Bilkis unless my resource base was absolutely amazing. I took Justinian over Croesus, so that in Age III I could choose one or the other depending on the situation. If someone had contested on Science then I could have diversified into blues and reds, making Justinian worth a respectable amount. As it happened, nobody else went Science and I got few reds and no blues, so Pythagoras was obvious.

Tomyris... Tomyris is a better with fewer players, I think. But I also think I would try to win military even with Tomyris. Lots of points there, and disincentive to opponents because they get a smaller prize for beating you. I don't know, she's weird.
-

Well, now you've said it, that's pretty much what my thought was. In particular I've seen a few people fall into what I call the "Tomyris trap" where you play Tomyris, then totally ignore Military. The logic is you can go "lol, I don't care you can't hurt me, this card is worth 6 points pretty much." The issue is that, if you do follow that logic, then your neighbours can build just one military card and even if they lose to their other neighbour three times, they still end up with 6 points from military to your 0 - from one age I or age II card play, which is probably less costly than playing Tomyris was. In other words, playing Tomyris and then never competing military helps your neighbours more than it helps you. The obvious solution here is to not completely ignore military, but to be aware of it's implications in how military will play out.
In 3 player though, it gets much weirder, because Diplomacy is much stronger. And as an aside to that, I think Tomyris kind of combos with the other military leaders. Get an early military lead, then plonk down Tomyris, and your neighbours know they're fighting an uphill battle for fewer points than usual.

So you want to save Tomyris for Age II? I feel like, if I take Tomyris, I should do so in Age I. Military lead isn't guaranteed, but you have a better shot with Tomyris discouraging others from building red. But as for the other military leaders, why not just use them and skip Tomyris? If I have 2 bonus shields in Age I, the others are probably already not so interested in competing.
Do you think that the strength of Diplomacy makes the Diplomacy wonder (Byzantium?) better in 3p? I think I had it as a choice for this game, but I don't like to rule out military from the start, which is sort of what you do with Byzantium.

No, not necessarily. It was more of an example - going the other way around would be fine, I think. That said, Tomyris costs 4 coins, so I'd usually be hesitant to play her in age I for largely the same reason I'd be hesitant to play Bilkis - although I suppose Tomyris has more potential to be effective during that age.
Diplomacy is definitely a bigger deal in 3 player, since a single diplomacy during an age halves the number of battles your neighbours fight. This can happen in 4 player, but you'd need two diplomacy to be played in an age, which is less likely. Halving your neighbours number of fights is a pretty huge deal, it considerably lowers the number points available from military. That said I don't have enough experience to tell you just how much better it is.
-
I've had good success in RL playing Byzantium and playing red. There's much less incentive for your opponents to contest you on red when they know you can just gut their winnings by suddenly building your wonder for insta-diplomacy. Especially using the B side.
And if no one seriously contests you? Then don't build your wonder. Nothing says you have to build your wonder.

While it's true that you never have to build your wonder, and sometimes it is good not to, in general I don't want to go in with that plan. There are almost always hands where you have nothing better to do, hands where there's something you really need to bury, and hands where both of those things are true. My concern with Byzantium is that you either end up giving up on wonders or giving up on military immediately (something else I don't like to do). I usually like to do both, so I don't really want to cut one out. But I suppose in games where you play what you are dealt, you've got to make the best of it!
I have a few more thoughts on this, but it could affect others' choices this game so I'll put it in my QT instead. PM for a link if you'd like. :P

done.
-
Oh... so, Lio's just (kind of accidentally) noticed that I never applied the debt effects of Davio's wonder stage C.
eHalc would have obviously paid 2 coins, that one is easy. I think that considering he sent himself down to 0 coins anyway, the easiest way to resolve Lio is to give him two debt. While we can argue he should have spent the two coins going by the 'official' debt for PBF houserule, then things get awkward. So I think that should probably be done now. If anyone objects let me know.
-
Well, what most likely would have happened is that I would have discarded the brickyard instead of building it, but that would have effected many future actions a lot. In fact, I probably would actually be better off. But giving me two debt is probably the best solution. Rewinding doesn't really work because age 3 hands have already been dealt.
-
I always forget that the Diplomacy wonder of China also has debt on it. If I had remembered, I would have called it out. Sorry!
I agree that giving lio debt is probably the best solution. I think having the Brickyard in play hurts me the most (would have loved it if I was the only one who could build Siege Workshop) but I don't mind.
I chose. Also, it was very painful to pass on all those blues last hand... I really needed coins.
I thought it was going to be a harder choice for you because of your wonder. I didn't really expect you to use your free build on turn 1. It was a good choice though, I think.
-
I'm getting the sense that coins are much more important with cities/leaders. I really undervalued them this game...
-
I'm getting the sense that coins are much more important with cities/leaders. I really undervalued them this game...
You've had a pretty tame game too -- no debt cards until this last age. The very first time I played with Cities IRL, we had EVERY debt card as well as Petra and Catan (debt wonders). Some of my friends really hate Cities now because of it, but the thing to keep in mind is that they are actually just nerfed blue cards.
For example, Brotherhood is 4VP, cause 3 debt. The most that this is worth is 7VP, if every opponent chose to take debt instead of pay for it. If every opponent pays for it, it's only worth net 5VP to you. But the choice makes it feel more painful than it is, especially to players who are low on coin. It's kind of like Dominion's Torturer -- it would be significantly stronger if it always gave the Curse instead of giving the discard as an option, but the choice makes it feel much more oppressive.
-
Oh, Tables, you neglected to deduct the regular $2 cost of Capitol from my total. I pay $3, $1 to Bilkis and $2 to the bank. So if I've got this all correct, I should be at $9 now.
Edit: Oh wait, lio paid me. Never mind.

Well, I'm just paying you because you have less need for the money. :)
-
Any reason you guys are paying me? :P
Chosen.
I can tell you Liopoil did it because he's reasonably confident he's playing for second place :P.
-
yup... we let ehalc get too much science :(
-
Well, I generally do that, but it's less of a problem in 7-player as there is mostly one other player contesting it.
Science with no contest is indeed very strong, but once I got to AIII, I could continuously build 6+VP cards myself so I didn't have time for a detour anymore.
I also played this game on semi-auto-pilot due to real life time constraints (read: work and family), but it was fun.
-
I honestly thought that Davio would also play for Science. China is a good wonder for it -- cloth start is excellent, the mask wonder helps in competition, and the black market and money wonders support a low-resource chain-heavy strategy. Davio also had the opportunity for a good science leader (Ptolemy or Archimedes) and I really thought he would take it. I mean, I passed two Science leaders to him so would he really have figured that there was a third good Science card in that hand that I took? In his spot, I would have taken that as an indication that Ephesos was disinclined to pursue Science, giving China free reign.
If you read my QT thoughts for Age I hands, I continually worried about Davio scooping science cards. There was one point where Davio could have disrupted my strategy by burying Glassworks to build his BM wonder. By doing that, he would have been the only one to have access to Glass. He could then have built Workshop at his leisure. He could also have had Apothecary if he wanted it, because I passed on it on my first hand in favour of the Timber Yard.
After playing through this game, I am fairly certain that you just HAVE to have some plan to deal with science. If the other two players are competing for science, then you can leave them at it. If only one player is going for science, I think you have to consider taking a set yourself if you can swing it, or else commit to always burying science whenever you build a wonder stage. A single science set is actually quite nice if you build it early, and it hurts the science player more if you take away their chaining opportunities.
I expected Davio to go Science, which is why I took Justinian. If Davio was also taking science, my goal would be to just build a single science set and then get some red and blue to leverage Justinian to 9VP.

You miscounted the military a bit. I should get two +5 and one -1, Davio should get two -1. Puts me at 98, Davio at 63.
Here's my QT:

Good game guys!
-
You're right. I forgot to resolve your battle with Davio.
-
There was one point where Davio could have disrupted my strategy by burying Glassworks to build his BM wonder. By doing that, he would have been the only one to have access to Glass. He could then have built Workshop at his leisure.
This is exactly what I did with Great Wall B in 7WV, except with the Press instead of Glassworks.
-
62 science points. Dang.
-
It was high enough that I needed to manually work it out instead of just looking and going, "Oh, X/Y/Z science is worth W points", which I can do up to about 3 complete sets nowadays :P (yes people IRL are starting to resent me during scoring when I ask for science, look at people's sets and instantly tell them their scores).

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ApPT0N9WtHcKdFVKMUtYWkwyOWFKYUhiMFZPZmY0MWc&usp=drive_web#gid=11 is the game's sheet. As usual with 7 Wonders games... there's not really much of interest there. But I guess you can see how wonders were built and stuff.
-
Well, Science would have been pretty good for me in hindsight, but I just wasn't focused enough for this game.
-
Who's up for 7 Wonders 7? I just gots to match wits with eHalc. :D
-
I am ::). Does mean we'd need someone else to mod though, but I've made the basic files available and can easily do so again.
-
Yeah, Tables should absolutely get to play in the next game.
-
I'd play another. maybe a 4 or 5 player game? or do another two 3-player games?
-
Not sure if I want to get sucked in again... but yeah, I would do it. :P
