Title: Favorite Pixar Movies?
Post by: Dsell on March 05, 2013, 05:44:59 pm
I am a huge fan of Pixar, so this is a tough choice for me. Probably my favorite would be either Toy Story 3 or Up, but there are so, so many good ones.

Not Pixar! Though it does have a really similar style.

I voted for Up, but it's effectively tied with Toy Story 3. Both movies make me sob uncontrollably, like I'm some f*ing baby.

Up at the beginning, Toy Story 3 at the end....

Toy Story 1, got to always prefer the originals. The Claaaaaaaw, The Claaaaaw

Although Up is pretty damn close

Incredibles, for the sheer amount of laughter brought on when the fast boy realizes all that he can do on the island.

Also, the costume lady.

I re-watched it 2 days ago! Maybe their most underrated movie, for whatever reason it doesn't seem to get as much praise as a bunch of their others.

However, I absolutely love Ratatouille.

Monsters Inc. and The Incredibles were also quite good - and Toy Story was wonderful as well. Brave was quite solid too.

I mean, there's little that they've done that I DISLIKE... So really can't go wrong with any of the choices. Bugs Life was one of the few I didn't like.

(Toy Story 3 and Up, I should clarify aren't bad in my book... But just not as good as some of their others. They fallintothe same category as Cars 2 or TS 2 do for me).

The Incredibles is one of my favorite movies, full stop.  I'm just happy no one has picked Cars 2 or a Bugs Life.  They say there are no wrong answers when it comes to taste, but clearly those answers are objectively wrong.

Ratatouille, far and away.  Toy Story trilogy is next, with Monsters, Inc. being the sleeper hit with me.

Ha, I'm with you! I like A Bug's Life but it's my least favorite of the ones I've seen. I actually haven't seen Cars 2 yet (it's the only one, ok I guess I can't call myself a true Pixar fan) but it got so many disappointing reviews and I struggle with lowering my expectations for a Pixar film. I do want to see it sometime but there's no way I'll like it as much as the others. I could see someone picking Bug's Life though!

Whoa.  Whoaaaaaa.  I did not realize that. o.O

My favourite is Up, followed closely by The Incredibles and Wall-E.  They are all pretty great though.

I wasn't super taken with the Toy Story trilogy... maybe I was too young when I watched the first one.  I should check it out again; I don't really remember it.

I picked Wall-E, which is the only reason Up and Toy Story 3 got nominated for Best Picture anyway.  Wall-E is beautiful.

Runners up would be The Incredibles and Ratatouille.

Heh.  I dunno - there's a real cluster of quality at the top, and there's probably 6-7 movies that I could see as being the best (Up, TS3, Wall-E, Ratatouille).  And really, even the bad stuff is better than nearly every other animated movie and most non-animated movies.

Wall-E is beautiful.

I was blown away by how much they communicated using no words in the first half. Beautiful is right. I need to watch WALL-E again.

The real power of the TS trilogy for me was watching them as a parent.  If you have a daughter, and don't tear up during the "when somebody loved me" song, you are a heartless, terrible person.

I watched Toy Story 3 for the first time in theaters, with my mom, a couple months before leaving for college. You could say it has some sentimental value for me.

My favorite movie is Incredibles because it has an unpopular theme, pushing against America's cultural movement towards telling everyone they're special and equal when they aren't.

More than any other film Pixar has done (outside their shorts), Wall-E was a true powerhouse in demonstrating their ability to tell a story. It was absolutely captivating.

It's one of the things for me that takes away from films like UP, The Incredibles or even Brave. All good enough movies, but Pixar stole my heart in their ability to tell stories using characters that, well, aren't human. And through these Toys, or Bugs, or Robots, or Cars... I still find myself drawn in and relating to the stories at an emotional level - A connection that often defies my natural instinct.

I don't find myself... As surprised, by Pixar's "Human" driven stories, and it leaves me wanting just a little bit more.

I really like most of these movies.  Haven't seen Cars 2 (not excited to at all) and I thought Brave was pretty below average and felt like two different movies slapped together.  Hope Pixar returns to form before too long.  Would rank the rest like this, from best to least good:

Toy Story 3 - Having watched Toy Story as a kid and being a man too immature to throw away his toys, this movie hit really, really hard.  If you're like me at all, either the end of this movie made you tear up or you are a liar.  First half is less good, but still a highly entertaining prison break film.

The Incredibles - One of the most significant animated films of its time, with a great message not everyone is comfortable hearing.  All-around, a killer action movie.  Watch the director commentary if you have the DVD; it's one of the best I have heard, especially Brad Bird's thoughts about animation as a medium.

Up - The talking dog stuff is a little silly, but otherwise this is a grand, beautifully realized film.  The first ten minutes are, as everyone knows, jaw-dropping, but I really liked the odd couple relationship between the main characters and thought the villain did a good job showing the dark side of committing to a lifelong dream like the main character did in a way that didn't feel ham-fisted.

Toy Story - Gets a lot of slack for being their first, but honestly it holds up great considering it's basically the first of its kind.  Smart characters, well-written and with snappy dialogue.  Woody and Buzz are unforgettable.

WALL-E - Another master class Pixar movie.  Gorgeous space scenery and an oh-so-cool avoidance of dialogue for a long period of time.  The message of the film is presented in a way that rubs people the wrong way, but I think it's largely because it makes them uncomfortable to hear it.  (not saying I don't think it's a little unsubtle, but this didn't drag the movie down much for me)

Ratatouille - I don't consider this quite on the tier of the above films, but it's definitely next in line.  Patton Oswalt makes a fine performance, and the human animation is some of the best Pixar has done.  I didn't think much of the critic (and I'll admit the ending didn't have any buildup and kind of lost me) but I understand why people like his character so much.  This film feels very tightly designed.

Toy Story 2 - Not sure why critics think this is so much better than the original; I certainly don't think it is, but it's a great time regardless.  It's the funniest of the trilogy, but tugs at the heart strings a little too.  I don't care for Jesse the cowgirl (she's honestly a little annoying) but I enjoyed the conflict Woody goes through enough to make up for that.  For me, the side characters steal the show in this one (Buzz, the other Buzz, Rex, Potato Head, etc).

Monsters, Inc. - A lot of people seem to favor this one highly, but I just think it's pretty good.  Maybe the cutest Pixar movie, though.  The monster designs are a lot of fun.

A Bug's Life - After watching Seven Samurai and a few other samurai films, I got a kick out of all the references to them here.  It still isn't as strong as some of Pixar's other material, but it's very watchable.

Cars - I don't hate Cars, but I didn't like it enough to watch the sequel when it came out.  It's kind of a generic story, but it's pulled off all right I guess.  Probably a bigger hit with kids who are still in to Hot Wheels and all that, so I'm not going to hold my lack of caring for automobiles against the movie.

Up was a bit meh for me. The intro was nice. I had to watch TS3 twice in a few days, and I didn't want to see it the second time, so I guess that wasn't great for me either. Top two would be A Bug's Life and Monster's Inc, but neither of those come close to the Dreamworks masterpiece that is Shrek (1).

Toy Story. All of them are good, but I still think the first is the best. Even if you don't like Toy Story check out this http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2013/01/14/toy_story_live_action_remake_pixar_classic_redone_at_full_length_by_super.html.

It is a full live action/stop action remake of it. Pretty crazy. I watched both side by side and they were pretty spot on for all of it.

You know, I didn't really like Brave.

I watched it the other day. I was really disappointed actually. The trailers sold it as a movie about a strong powerful heroine who was a badass archer. It turned out to be so lame and tediously predictable, full of bad fairy tale tropes. It was like a Shrek ripoff without the jokes.

The entire movie was about a witch turning her mom into a bear! And she must get her back with the power of love! Did anyone expect that from the previews?

I put Incredibles as favorite for me, but it might be WALL-E on second thought. I also loved Ratatouille and all three Toy Story's.

I fell asleep during UP and still haven't seen the whole thing. (Friends and I thought it was a good summer afternoon post-brewfest activity. It was not.)

Actually on third thought, who am I kidding? How can anything top Cars 2: Internal Combustion Boogaloo?

I actually didn't know what to expect from the previews but I was a little nervous...I ended up being really pleasantly surprised by the result, I thought the movie was a lot of fun. Her mom is SO FUNNY as a bear daintily trying to be prim and proper. I would put it just a notch beneath Incredibles, Nemo, Monsters, TS2, Ratatouille I think. Still really strong.

I am with you, Cuzz.  The story just didn't seem to have any depth to me.

Up is my favourite just for the opening montage.  The rest of the movie is stellar too, but just that whole relationship was so beautiful, oh man.

I am a fan of Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc. and Ratatouille, but I don't have them on DVD.  The ones I have are The Incredibles, Wall-E and Up.

Other than putting WALL-E first, everything else kinda ties for 2nd...

Even then it's hard for me to consistently say it's my favorite. I absolutely loved Brave. The Toy Story trilogy is amazing. Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, and Incredibles are all delightful. Bug's Life and Ratatouille were both very good but they seem to be lacking some little something the rest have. Cars and Cars 2 are entertaining films, the former being considerably better than the latter. Cars 2, unfortunately, was mostly running jokes and marketing, but it entertained me with the Bond-esque themes. Up is probably the best opening 10 minutes of any movie I've seen in a long time.

But for the sake of argument, I'm voting for WALL-E tonight.

Lot of love for Wall-E, I see.  That's the only film I've started and couldn't finish.  And I just haven't seen Cars 2 or Brave yet.  But Wall-E I've seen bits and pieces of but just haven't been able to stay interested in mini-Number 5.

Tossup between Toy Story 3 and Incredibles for me, they're both very good. I remember having mixed feelings on Brave right after watching it, but in retrospect I couldn't find anything about it I disliked. It was solid, but not memorable.

I was very disappointed with Brave. It's easy for me to say that it's the worst Pixar movie (have seen all except Cars 2). That's not to say it's a terrible movie. The worst Pixar movie isn't saying much... it's still just fine. It's just that the story was so uninspiring and cliche'd. Person is transformed into animal because of someone's selfishness, animal bonds with person again, fixes the spell. It just felt so much like any other basic Disney animated movie. Like you point out, it's a fairy tale. And I've come to expect much more out of Pixar than just a fairy tale.

That said, I loved the Scottish music and scenery.

What GendoIkari said, to a good extent.  It also wasn't very funny, whereas a Pixar movie like Cars may not be thoughtprovoking or inspiring or emotional it's at least good for a few laughs.  Brave's humor was largely physical comedy iirc, and not good quality stuff either.

A lot of Brave was like, National Geographic channel kind of stuff, where certain scenes or action sequences were taking place because the scottish scenery or the newest way of rendering animals was being tried out, in a couple places it seemed to be more of a tech demo than a movie in this way, because the attention was drawn away from the characters.  I'd say the characters and plot, but I wanted to be drawn away from the plot because it was a dull, cliche plot.

It didn't help that the trailers promoting the movie were borderline dishonest.  Which I guess shouldn't count against the movie itself, but if you saw the movie you probably saw the trailer first and the expectation versus reality rift doesn't improve the experience.

At the very least the whole scene where she explains how the highway came through and ruined the town that depended on the small road traffic was thought-provoking and inspiring and emotional. I absolutely loved that about Cars, especially given the fact that they were dealing with an actual historical reality in America.

Cars was my favorite Pixar before I saw Up.

My favorite scenes in Pixar movies tend to be the really dark/painful portions in the middle.  Buzz's attempt to fly in the original TS, the scene in Cars above, Jessie being abandoned (wait...that's in TS2, not TS3, as I said earlier), the toys accepting their death in TS3, etc.
