What are some general things you wish you knew when you started Dominion?
I thought we could make a list of everything we wish we knew when we began our journey into this wondorous game of medieval strategy.
Example:
I wish I understood/knew how the reshuffle worked.
I wish I knew that I should focus on making engines, not Big Money, in most of my games.
-
Learning is the fun part. I'm glad I didn't know how to play when I first started playing.
-
I wish I knew it would end up taking up so much of my time...

This. And I wish that I was into Dominion much earlier.

Tell me about it.
-
I wish I knew isotropic, ds, and f.ds existed!
-
That Goko would do as poorly as it has, so I could warn everyone.

I think he just did? ;)

But then that takes out all the surprise!
That I would get too hooked on the online version to think of buying a physical copy of the game >.>;;
-
That if I got good, my friends would stop playing with me and move on to other board games like A Game of Thrones.

And space.

Yah, it is not much fun playing with my irl playgroup anymore. They are starting to hate me a lot, especially because I tend to mess up their decks with cursing attacks and whatnot and then they stall, and I get an easy win.
-
Two main things. First, that I should get good combos of actions instead of good actions. Second, the importance of trashing. I can still remember when I thought Chapel was the worst card in the game...

Which version do you have? I have an original version, and it seems that the general learning curve is 1) play around, do things, someone wins, 2) whoever decided to start the bloodbath early wins 3) everyone starts fighting right away 4) the game takes forever and everyone is weak since everyone just dives into the battles right off without establishing themsleves.
I head that subsequent editions fixed this somewhat. Perhaps there is also a stronger approach that is less tedious.
Perhaps I should ask this on a different thread.
-
I think it's the second edition. I don't know, I personally don't like it and there always seems to be one or two people who don't enjoy playing the game and resigning themselves to losing and one or two people who enjoy it because the former group gets pissed off.
Fortunately a couple of my friends are pretty decent at Dominion, but there used to be more people who were willing to play at any given time. One of my friends never touched the game again after he got Torturer pinned in what was literally our first game with Intrigue, and another one we never enjoy playing with because he experiences excruciating AP all the time.
-
I wish I knew more about Dominion before I started making fan cards for it and I wish I had listened to people instead of ignoring them.
-
That no matter how many Throne Rooms and cantrips together, your hand will not exceed 5 cards.
-
It depends on the kingdom.
-
This. And I wish that I was into Dominion much earlier.
Word.
One of my friends had mentioned Dominion a few times in passing before and I had meant to check it out but never quite got around to it. Then on a whim last Christmas someone wanted something to buy me and I mentioned it. Then I found out there were a ton of expansions and a massive online playing community and I really wished I had found out about it sooner so I could have experienced all the cards as they came out.
-
The necessity of trashing and how awesome Chapel is. Such a subtle card (like Smithy) instruction, yet devastating effect.

+1. I am so far behind in collecting my sets. But, seaside is on it's way, should be here in a couple of days...
-
I sometimes wish I knew less now than I do, does that count?
I cannot just sit down and play Dominion with my friends at home any more, its too easy. I could probably beat them just buying money and victory cards a good chunk of the time. Part of me kind of liked not knowing all the clever strategies and maths.
I suppose I sort of wish more of my game night opponents read here....

(And friends money too... I keep apologizing to him for causing this)
-
That Chapel isnt useless.
-
That you only take 10 Curses out in two-player games.
-
I wish I hadn't bought the cheap sleeves.
-
That Chapel isnt useless.
I always find it odd phrased like that. It's not about Chapel, it's the concept that Coppers and Estates are bad.
Which eventually evolves into the general case of "Some cards, even those that previously helped my deck, are detrimental to my deck and should be removed if possible."
