Title: What to do if someone isn't playing?
Post by: ednever on December 05, 2012, 10:18:36 pm
I've never had this happen in a tournament before.

I played a Ghost Ship and he hasn't responded. It's been 7 minutes now.

I don't like the idea of forcing a resign in tournament play, but he's not responding to chats anymore either.

At what point do you make them resign?

You should probably drop out of the tournament.  :P

In all seriousness, he's probably not getting back to that game, so I'm sure it's fine to resign him. I think you can count that one as a win (unless you really don't want to, then just call it a draw), and finish the series.

Solved.
We called the game a draw.

There should likely be some rule for this as the tournament gets going into the super competitive rounds...

I disagree. I think if an opponent stalls for more than a couple of minutes, it should count for a win as in your case. And, if it happens a second time, it should count as a match win.

I think there is no choice but to call it a game loss because any other rule is too exploitable.

We understand that things sometimes come up and a player is forced to leave the game for a while. In this sort of setting, it is much better form to give your opponent some extra time. However, these situations have to be counted as losses for the inactive player. If you as the opponent wish to call it a draw, that is your prerogative, but inactivity is far too exploitable to rule anything other than loss.

Gosh, I'm not sure what I'd do if my opponent timed out.  I would hate to claim a win because of my opponent's connectivity issues, and would be tempted to cancel that game, and start another.  But the temptation of a poor sport to intentionally time out in lost games also worries me.  I think if I had a substantial enough lead, I'd prefer to claim a win; but if it was unclear, then I'd restart that game.

Right. I think the logical conclusion is that the player is well within his rights to claim it as a win, but (a) not all of us are so cutthroat, and (b) exploitation of this rule will be dealt with case-by-case.

I have about 0 trust that the force-resign button comes up at a well-fixed interval, so I want people doing screenshots for this stuff.

Also if someone communicates in chat saying they need some afk time I think they should get ~30 minutes of grace.  If they vanish without explanation then they don't necessarily deserve that much time.

EDIT: This is totally and massively biased by a the high likelihood I'm going to have to afk for 15 minutes or so during a game.

I'm pretty sure that you will get auto-kicked by the server before 15 minutes have passed.
