Title: Gardens Division: Bracket and Results
Post by: greatexpectations on December 02, 2012, 08:43:13 pm
Results for the Gardens Division bracket are to be posted in this thread.

For each series post the overall winner and the number of games each player won. Please try to grab each game log from isotropic before moving on. Discussion of the results is not necessary but it is encouraged.

Here is the bracket for the Witch Division of the 2012 DominionStrategy.com championships: http://dominionstrategy.challonge.com/2012gardens

Full rules can be found here: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=5686.0

Each round, you are responsible for finding your opponent and scheduling a game by the end of the week. You may mutually agree to any rules you wish to play by. If you cannot agree you must play with the default rules as follows: veto mode off, identical starting hands on, official point counter on, fully random sets, point counter extension allowed.

The first player in the first game is decided by whichever player is 'higher' in the Challonge bracket. For round one, this means the higher seed will play first. To accomplish this, begin a game in the tournament lobby and select the player who is to play first. After that game, you may both move to the Secret Chamber lobby (but don't exit Isotropic!) and the player to play first will be the loser of the previous game.

If you have trouble scheduling, please message me and I will attempt to work it out.

Have fun and good luck!

This makes me think: It would be sweet do do some March Madness style bracket prediction for this Championship. Its obviously too late to start for round 1, but there's probably too many players in round 1 anyway. Maybe we could do something like this for the round of 64 or 32? We could pause the tournament for 3 or 4 days to let people create their brackets, and have the winner get something cool! I don't know if it's feasible, but it would be fun!

could just run polls for each division after the first?  bracketing would be fun too though

2) Edge case..

1) It was more like: if it was 1 sport only.
2) Hardly any difference with regard to betting then.

In Tuvalu we bet with Coconuts though, and the only sport we have is Coconut throwing. Which makes it tricky to play because you can lose your coconut to a bet and have nothing to throw!

Obi Wan Bonogi 4-0 over pianoboy21

I requested to play without possession and tournament which he agreed to.

 Game 1 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-101056-856980f1.html)
 Game 2 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-101937-975d453c.html)

Lost log for Game 3.  It was a degenerate IGG duchy rush.  We agree to prohibit IGG going forward.

Just for confusion DG 4  : 0 -dg-.

DG 41 : 28 -dg- http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-114247-92da7da3.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-114247-92da7da3.html)

DG 40 : 10 -dg- http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-121347-e4711fd0.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-121347-e4711fd0.html)
DG 38 : 34 -dg- http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-122320-acf90db4.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-122320-acf90db4.html)

The first three games were pretty rough attack games with multiple attacks and ill gotten gains. The second game is the most interesting of those and it might have been worth seeing what a second torturer would have done for my opponent. The fourth game was a fool's gold rush and I probably was a bit lucky to squeeze it out, possibly due to having less terminals.

Thanks to -dg- for some nice friendly Dominion games with some pleasant chat along the way.

Thanks to kaboom30000 for some fun games of dominion in my first every tournament.

I went for the golden deck in game 1 with Chapel/Bishop, and was quite slow at building it.  I was able to just squeak out a win with a more reliable deck in the end.  I know I didn't play optimally, but I'm not sure how i'd play that shuffle luck.  Game 2 was a Sea Hag slog, that i was able to transition out of just a little faster with some Apprentice play.  Game 3 was a Colony game with a crazy Black Market and a very slow to set up King's Court/Torturer deck.  He got 3 Colonies before i could lock his deck with Torturer, and the game was much closer than the score would suggest.  Game 4 was Hunting Party/Swindler vs. Minion.  I was able to trash faster with Forge, and attack him enough slow him down from there.

RichardMNixon 4-1 Atariman486

We both forgot to grab the first 3 gamecaps, surely you can trust Nixon though.

Wharf, Bazaar, and Crossroads showed up often. I vetoed IGG in one of them because, man, forget that card.

As I recall:

Game 1: I don't remember very well. I think I got a relatively early forge while Atariman went stables. Forged gold silver and copper into a deck of mostly platinum.
Game 2: We both went chapel/silver I think with mining village, rabble, and bazaar out. Atariman worked the better balance during a green slugfest at the end.
Game 3: Atariman started greening early while I started with bishop and built up a pile of wharves and bazaars to steal it at the end.
Game 4 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-194300-d8805fa0.html): I open silver/silver rather than silver/monument to take advantage of bank and avoid collision with wharf. Noticed a little later that crossroads and harem could be fun too but never got into it too deeply.
Game 5 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-195140-c14ff351.html): We both open moneylender into BM I luck into an earlier gold and add a haven, then the first roll of his thief hits double green. Tense moment was turn 15 - playing haven to get a hand of gold, copper, and green while I was down by 5 with one province left. If I havened the copper I could buy an estate and be safe the next turn since I'd win the tie. If I had havened the gold, he'd have had a chance to win by one, but if he didn't then the next province would have been mine (with the havened copper I got to $7). I played it safe, not sure if that was correct.

Thanks atariman for a great series of games!

bjmartin 4-2 qmech

Game 1:
qmech 52
bjmartin 47
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-121534-84c4c119.html
Interesting game where I go Tournament, and he goes University/Vineyards. In the end the game lasted long enough for him to make his vineyards worth 7 each and he won.

Game 2:
bjmartin 22
qmech 18
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-123115-13afe7c3.html
Game with Swindler and Young Witch on the board. He built an engine, I took a slight early lead in points, and I was able to 3-pile with the help of Swindler before he was able to catch up

Game 3:
bjmartin 22
qmech 15
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-123705-27ca0351.html
IGG rush where I was able to win going from the 2nd spot probably mostly through luck

Game 4:
bjmartin 47
qmech 27
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-124957-b384bf32.html
Tournament game with Mountebank on the board too. I lined my tournament up first.

Game 5:
qmech 49
bjmartin 23
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-125702-fa993cf9.html
He went Oracle/BM which was too fast for the Conspirator deck I was trying to put together

Game 6:
bjmartin 33
qmech 28
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-130949-f3fb057d.html
Another Swindler game where I was trying to go Minions, but they kept getting swindled. I think expand and going first won this game for me, but it was another close one.

Thanks qmech for the great games!

Game 1: I don't think I deserved to win it.  The Province might have been a mistake as it almost cost me the game; I also missed a chance at Remodel University -> Vineyard.

Game 2: "Built" is over-generous: 7 Native Villages and a Margrave is not an engine.  I had no good plan for buying the draw I needed.

Game 3: I'm not sure luck had much to do with it: I placed my bet on Hoard rather than IGG.  That's still going to be too slow to pick up more Provinces than a straight IGG rush, as you showed.

Game 4: If you're putting that one down to luck I won't protest.

Game 5: At 3-1 down I had to start playing accurately.  I think I did here, and it's the game I'm happiest with.

Game 6: I thought I lost this early on due to my dubious Moneylender/Swindler opening.  I fall way behind on Minions, then fluke into Swindling several in quick succession, which raises my hopes for a while.  But I'm playing catch up all the way, and don't make it in the end.

A well-deserved 4-2 to bjmartin.  As is customary, I must also thank you for freeing me from arranging any more matches.  :P

Match report for Tables (25) vs. bit wise (40)
Match result: Tables 4-2 bit wise

Game 1 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-140904-f5128641.html): Tables 39-30 bit wise
A rather uninteresting game, where Sea Hag dominated. Some lucky draws set me up to grab two Apprentices the shuffle the curses ran out, and grabbing an Inn at the end of that shuffle let me trash away both Sea Hags for 8 cards, giving me a big tempo boost, which lasted to the games end.

Game 2 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-142233-20964f5f.html): bit wise 20-28 Tables
A slightly more exciting board, with a HoP megaturn option. It wasn't easy to set up, with Sea Hag slowing us both down (although only I bought one). Tactician played a star role in setting up the mega turns, Steward provided the trashing, and the game was a fun, close one. We both confessed to not really knowing what we were doing, but my engine managed to hit the Province button a little sooner than his.

Game 3 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-142858-f6a0146d.html): bit wise 31-41 Tables
A less-than-exciting Big Money game. We both open with Masquerade, and later grab Noble Brigands. I grab sooner, and get lucky immediately, and proceed to carry the momentum of that luck through to victory.

Game 4 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-143538-67e9a330.html): bit wise 49-32 Tables
A game with slightly diverging strategies. I open Baron/Silver, gunning straight for Gold and the big money option, while bit wise goes for Tunnel with Inn. I eventually follow suit, but he manages to build up a big reservoir of Gold, and with Apprentice support, uses it to land a clear victory.

Game 5 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-143928-66fcba73.html): Tables 30-40 bit wise
I get some crazy draws early on, never hitting $5, and consequently play basically pure BM for most of the game, having not noticed anything particularly good with Hoard. bit wise disagrees, using Hoard and Apprentice, along with bridge, for some huge gains, and easily destroys me.

Game 6 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/04/game-20121204-144823-ec347c08.html): Tables 63-37 bitwise
Probably the most fun Dominion game I've played in a while, this was a board with viable Vineyard, Duke and province support. After much deliberation, I went for Vineyards, grabbing Oasis and Island as openings, while he goes for Duchy Duke. Neither of us played the board perfectly - I should have grabbed Wishing Well sooner, as it combo'd with Apothecary, and probably taken an Outpost with a $5 at some point. bit wise thought he went for Duchies too soon. Either way, my deck started ramping up the VPs too quickly at the end, and I took the three piles for game and match.

Thanks bit wise for such a fun series, and for being a good sport throughout despite getting some really bad luck. You were certainly a worthy opponent, and possibly more, and I hope to run into you again for some more matches.

It's sad that people join DS.com just to register for the tournament and then never come back.  Maybe for future large DS.com sponsored tournaments, there should be a minimum activity level on the forum in order to participate.  After all, this is the DS.com Championship!!

As a former hardcore lurker, I hear you.  But doesn't it still add to your logged-on time?

Not if you haven't registered.  I suspect most lurkers don't have an account (I didn't until I started posting).

Seems like if you were required to register in order to play in the tournament, you probably read the rules. If you read the rules, you would know that you need to contact your opponent via PM. Hopefully people who wanted to play in the tourney would make the extra effort to visit the forum during those week(s) even if they never get back on.

gamesou 4-2 hsiale

Game 1: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-121511-3d858238.html
He opened 5-2 on a board with Witch and bought his second one before I could buy first. I never recovered from initial cursing and lost 24-40.

Game 2: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-122531-ebc99310.html
Board with Duke and Silk Road, I won Duchy split 5-3 but it turned out later that I started greening too early and could not get Dukes reliably. His Hoard was working wonders.

Game 3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-124005-7f4eaefe.html
Played BM with 2x Envoy and 1x Bridge. With early terminal clashes I felt it isn't going well, but somehow my deck got going and his didn't. He tried some tricks with Forge but they never worked well.

Game 4: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-130135-a0982865.html
This time I opened 5/2, bought Highway and went for Highway/Goons. He bought no Goons early and my attacks stopped him, I got a lead. In the end his smaller deck started to chase me (and he got Goons of his own) but I bought 7 Gardens and managed to get my deck to 51 cards before I could take 8th Province (for 5-3 split) and stay in the lead despite having 3 Colonies left.

Game 5: we lost the log
I went for Double Jack which was working nicely, but before I could buy enough Provinces I got hit by a crazy Torturer-University-Golem-Throne Room chain, that played Torturer something like 10 times a turn.

Game 6: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-133229-7bb72b9d.html
Witch game once again, I got cursed more and again could not recover from this, as he was always two steps ahead and I had no idea how to change this.

andwilk 2- 0 ilpars (in progress)

Game 1: andwilk defeats ilpars (34-20 I think, forgot to grab game log)
Mountebank game where we both open 5/2.  I buy more Farming Villages and go heavy on Mountebank early which allows me to win the curse split 6-4.  The Farming Villages allow me to skip over my junk cards and I also win the Province split 5-3.

Game 2:  ilpars 30 - 51 andwilk (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-144450-cb684b73.html)
Goons/City game with Menagerie for defense/draw.  My opponent never invests in Cities, instead opting for Bazaars with $5 buys.  I accelerate to victory once piles start to run out.

We will continue our match on Saturday.

Buggy vs. Orange.  Buggy is currently ahead 3-2, but we need to finish the match up this weekend.

Game 1:  Buggy.  http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-160129-3f41a4f1.html  I win through the simple strategy of getting a 5/2 opening split.  Then I ride the Governor train to Province Station.

Game 2:  Orange.  http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-160929-feadbd15.html  He wins by totally stealing my 5/2 split strategy from the first game and then deftly setting up a very elegant Hamlet/Library/Tunnel engine that worked quite well for him.

Game 3:  Buggy.  http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-162256-58e6c780.html  Orange tries a Vault/GM strategy, but my Witches, well, act like Witches.

Game 4:  Buggy.  http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-163747-12b54108.html  This one was very very close.  I normally loathe Contraband, but we both make good use of it here.  Also, it's kinda funny when we both realize halfway through not to play Shanty Town if we have a Contraband in hand.

Game 5:  Orange.  http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-165035-1b7f59e9.html  So, we all have a least favorite card and mine is Goons, but now is not the time for ranting.  Now is the time to congratulate Orange on setting up an elegant little Golem/Goon/Masquerade pin and to shame Buggy for making two big mistakes.  (Early on, I said to myself, "now keep a bad card," so what did I have in hand with the first Goons/Masquerade salvo?  Envoy-Gold-Gold.  Then later, I clicked Moat for the first Goons but failed to for the second Goons (because I thought it was asking for Moat again for the first Goons).  Then Orange graciously allowed me to resign.  Goons.  I hate them so very much!

So the score stands at 3-2.  We'll finish up this weekend.

ednever 4-0 over robonski
(We had a snafu in Game 2 where robonski froze and he hadn't played iso enough to know how to fix it. We gave it a bye and didn't count the game, but the log is below)

The games:

Fun engine with no +buy. Had to use Talisman and Militia to slow the game down:
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-185021-7632262f.html

Game we did not count:

Closest game. Witches! And Border Villages
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-193657-ff2b1d19.html

Familiars and Alchemists when we both opened 5/2. Rob goes for a Baron and gets to 3 provinces pretty fast, but stalls with 8 curses, giving my alchemist/market engine time to build
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-194928-06321935.html

Mint/Harem with Markets and Labs. Rob goes for Alchemists (understandably after the previous game), but Labs combined with Remake trashing do the trick without having to go the Potion route

I have to go right now, but I'll post some comments on the games later.

First game: Pretty simple mountebank/village/monument stuff going on, the two main differences here are clearly the amount of gardens and monuments. He started buying Gardens and I realized that yeah, that might be important, but only ended up picking up 2, which I was a bit surprised about when the game ended. I opted for monuments instead and that just didn't work out.

Second game: Oof. Worst game ever. Ignoring that my strategy was inferior and all of that, my luck was absolutely terrible. I played loan 4 times and hit silver instead of copper every time. I was completely unable to match up my Hamlets with my Ghost Ships early on, which usually means I didn't buy enough, but in this case I bought plenty of both. Strategy wise, I always try and avoid torturer/village whenever I can because it's my least favorite combo in the game, and I figured there might be enough trashing to avoid it. We both went Ghost ships early, and then when I hadn't bought enough trashing and my deck was big enough, he went torturers and there wasn't much I could do. I tried to pin him with Ghost Ships, but, as previously mentioned, one hand I would get 2 ghost ships and the next 3 hamlets and no ships. Just a bad game all around.

Third game: What a weird game. We embargoed a bunch of stuff at the beginning and set about to win tournaments. None of the cards were really any good for tournaments at all. It took a while but he got followers first and then eventually I got the steed. It looked like he was going to win but then both our decks came to a halt with 1 province left and we bought out all the duchies/estates. I got lucky and was able to buy the last province and we were both surprised to see that I had won.

Fourth game: Similar to the first game, with village/curser/monument. We were pretty even when he started buying Duchies and I should have bought more of them (like the first game!). I was dumb and didn't even realize he was three piling the duchies, otherwise I probably would have not helped him three pile as much as he did....oh well.

Fifth game: More cursing! IGG this time. I'm not sure I've read a game report yet that hasn't included an IGG game. Watch as IGG destroys any idea of other incredibly strong strategies, such as KC/Bridge and Gardens/Silk Road/Tunnel. What a fun card. I can't remember a game where Baron was better than in this game. If you had an estate, you pretty much always got 5, and if you didn't, you got a free estate for Silk Road and a free 2 extra cards for Gardens. I got lucky and snuck a province in, which helped immensely, as did being able to go first. I also think he should have kept going for IGGs, but hey, I thought that in the 7th game too, and look what happened. (spoiler: he won)

Sixth game: Gman really got screwed in this game. That being said, I think he should have recognized this board had nothin goin on and started in with Treasure Map immediately. I did and trashed with my Steward and hit my maps right away while he languished with his. My next 3 turns were provinces. That's all there was to it.

Seventh game: More IGG! Similar to last time except with no Barons and no gardens/tunnels to help Silk Road. I really should have thought about that as I went and decided to buy 5 of them, but didn't. His Horse Traders/Estates made the difference. Gman had 3 money his last turn, so if I had bought a Duchy instead of Silk Road at the end, and gotten 4 money my next turn, I would have won. Ah well.

Overall, was a lot of fun and some great games against an I think very evenly matched opponent =)

I have to go right now, but I'll post some comments on the games later.

Here are the comments I promised!

Game 1: gman314 45 - 39 Forge!!!
Mountebank was heavily dominant on this board. I think what gave me the win here was going into the Gardens first. Although, his Monuments did help him as well.

Game 2: gman314 24 - 6 Forge!!!
I think the really key card here was Ghost Ship, not Torturer. We both held out on buying Torturers for a while because of all the Trashing options and Ghost Ship had interesting interactions with a lot of stuff. I think my University really helped me and going into Torturers first really helped. Salvager also helped end it.

Game 3: gman314 38 - 43 Forge!!!
I don't think either of us new what happened here. We both thought I had it because we didn't have the point counter, and were both surprised when he won. I got into the Prizes first and the one Curse I picked up was from trying to play my Watchtower and yet still reveal it when buying an Embargoed Tournament. I probably could have done better by Embargoing Gold instead of Peddler, but whatever. It was a good game.

Game 4: gman314 32 - 24 Forge!!!
Witch was powerful on this board, but Swindler also had a role. Warehouse is a good card but when you get say, three of them instead of three Fishing Villages, you have a few too many for most peoples' liking. This game was really just decided on the Duchies.

Game 5: gman314 19 - 21 Forge!!!
This game was decided basically on IGG split. Not much to say.

Game 6: gman314 30 - 44 Forge!!!
Steward/Treasure Map beat out Remake/Silver into Treasure map. Probably the better opening,  but also some luck involved I think.

Game 7: gman314 18 - 14 Forge!!!
Another IGG game with lots of alt-VP and enablers. This was pretty interesting to play. If he had one more victory card, then he would have had the game and the match.

All in all, a good series. Good to play with you Forge!!!
Unfortunately, all the boards had brutal attacks except for the Tournament board and the Treasure Map set.

Post by: glengarry on December 06, 2012, 02:02:48 pm
Glengarry defeats Caprica 4-1

links below.

Game 1 was a straightforward BM / colonies game from this non-stellar set:
cards in supply: Apothecary, Cartographer, Colony, Expand, Mining Village, Navigator, Peddler, Philosopher's Stone, Platinum, Potion, Scheme, Trade Route, and Village
I saw my navigator a bit more reliably into first gold, then got to put this back on top of the deck for turn 8: Estate, 2 Golds, a Navigator, Copper.  so first plat too, and that's decisive.  glengarry: 79 points def. Caprica: 58 points.

Game 2 was a big comeback for me with by far the most 'play' of the 5 games.
cards in supply: Adventurer, Chancellor, City, Harem, Moat, Native Village, Pearl Diver, Remake, Wharf, and Workshop.
Caprica got the first moat while i was tooling around with some plan to win more NVs via a workshop.  Remaking more efficiently too.  She started to green hard, she had the only City, and the only 2 gold, while i had a much more robust NV+wharf engine built.  I think she wins if she takes Harems off the board, but as it happened, I started drawing my hand every turn, getting a bit of value out of Workshopping up more remakes to remake them into cities, buying most of the harems, and then double provincing to win by 1 on the last turn.  i was way, way behind for most of it and think outplayed as well, until some clarity at the end (ie deliberately not remaking away the last of my coppers, as i needed the +cash...)  glengarry: 35 points def. Caprica: 34 points.

Game 3 was an interesting variation on game 1, navigator and plats, but this time with vault+grand market into the mix...
cards in supply: Colony, Fortune Teller, Grand Market, Great Hall, Mint, Moneylender, Navigator, Platinum, Royal Seal, Vault, Warehouse, and Wharf
We both knew about vault = GM and intended that direction, but my first vault i happened to have 5 coppers in hand so i went ahead and minted them.  she churned through with warehouses and we eventually split the grand markets 5/5, but i had a bit more chaff in my deck including the recurring trade route / navigator collision.  I was 1 coin short of the tie/win at turn 19 via piling colonies, instead opted to take 2x province and a navigator left on top.  Caprica whiffed on the last colony despite blowing through 4 grand markets and a warehouse (+copper, copper, frown) and my navigator-approved hand of plat, GM, whse got there just fine.  (margin of victory = the 4 to 1 split in Great Halls!)  glengarry: 73 points def. Caprica: 70 points

Game 4 was one of my very few cracks ever at herbalist / philospher's stone, which Caprica hadn't seen done before.
cards in supply: Bridge, Cellar, Cutpurse, Fairgrounds, Herbalist, Horn of Plenty, Philosopher's Stone, Potion, Secret Chamber, Trader, and Trading Post
Unfortunately, my mind was focused so hard on figuring out how trader should affect my play there that i ignored the cutpurse.  Caprica was going first and absolutely wrecked me with it, i missed my first 3 cracks at a philosopher's stone.  i got outgolded 5 to 0 and my first three cracks at a big stone left me with 7 to spend.  she wound up not needing to pump up her fairgrounds to 6p each, i had no choice but to take the provinces down to 1 and she cellared into the last buy.  Caprica: 48 points def. glengarry: 43 points

Game 5 had Lab and witch as feature cards in an uninteresting set.
cards in supply: Envoy, Great Hall, Laboratory, Lighthouse, Loan, Merchant Ship, Remake, Trading Post, Witch, and Woodcutter
I got a Lab advantage and kept drawing them on the reshuffle, got a lean deck that powered out 6 provinces with only one gold to run on... Caprica went for a home run with envoy and did not draw well for her.  glengarry: 43 points def. Caprica: 23 points

Title: Re: Gardens Division: Bracket and Results
Post by: () | (_) ^/ on December 06, 2012, 02:59:19 pm
() | (_) ^/   4 - 0   lipo12

NB: As I commented to Robz afterwards, my opponent had a very direct style -- go for as many Provinces (or Colonies) as fast as possible.  It scared me on multiple occasions, as I try for the more "strategic" build up -- and it really kept the pressure on me!  During a couple of these games I thought I was dead for sure.  Luck saved my bacon on multiple occasions here.

===================

Before the games, we both agree to the default setup: totally random cards, identical hands, official point tracker.
For the first game, instead of doing some sort of logging on and off thing, I just volunteered that my opponent should go first as he/she was the lower seed.
I would not be opposed to such a rule for the tourney, fyi.

===================

Game1: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-092429-81994b86.html

Kingdom: Bishop, Cache, Chapel, Fairgrounds, Farming Village, Market, Moneylender, Monument, Talisman, and Worker's Village
#1 lipo12 opening: Chapel / Market
#2 paddyodoors opening: Chapel / Market

We both end up Chapeling our decks.  lipo12 goes for big money, while I use my MOST UNDERUSED CARD (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=5278.0), Talisman, to gain loads of Farming Villages and Monuments before going for the Provinces.  I'm a little worried that my opponent will be able to gain too much too fast, but the greening catches up to him/her and my Monuments are able to start making a comeback.

Interesting here is the Farming Village vs. Worker's Village -- I knew that green would kill me as there is no +cards on the board, so Farming was the way to go, I think.

Green points were pretty one sided (opponent's 5 Provinces + 3 Duchies (or should I say "Duchys" (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=5652.msg147466#msg147466)) + an Estate versus 3 Provinces for me), but I had quite a few VP chips.  The final score was even, 40-40, but the victory went my way since I was second player.

===================

Game2: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-094027-21e85d0c.html

Kingdom: City, Counting House, Cutpurse, Familiar (Potion), Governor, Lookout, Monument, Smithy, Spice Merchant, and Talisman
#1 lipo12 opening: Silver / Spice Merchant
#2 paddyodoors opening: Silver / Potion

Here I go for Familiar right away while my opponent instead delays for Spice Merchant first, then Familiar.  All 10 Curses are trashed by the end of the game, however, via Lookouts and Governors.

I am behind on Governors early, opting to thin my deck as much as possible.  However, I initiate the race for Cities ("Citys"?), knowing that they are virtually guaranteed to be Level-2 due to the 4 total Familiars in our two decks.  Also, I know that Governor likes draw other than itself, and Level-2 Cities and Smithies ("Citys and Smithys" -- dead horse yet?) can provide that reliably.  These, combined with my opponent usually using Governor for +cards, lead me to draw most of my deck each turn.  I remodel all of my Curses to Estates and then Estates to "Smithys"/Monuments.

I was behind all game, but thin Governor decks with adequate draw are so nice, and on the last turn I was able to gain 21 points for the 41 - 28 point win.

===================

Game3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-100542-fa32503e.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-100542-fa32503e.html)

By far my toughest game.

Kingdom: Envoy, Pearl Diver, Pirate Ship, Possession (Potion), Scheme, Secret Chamber, Trade Route, Vineyard (Potion), Walled Village, and Wharf
#1 lipo12 opening: Pirate Ship / Scheme
#2 paddyodoors opening: Pirate Ship / Trade Route

I was afraid this would turn into a Pirate Ship affair, and my opponent started with it right off the bat.  I'm not very good with Pirate Ship, and especially when there is no other "virtual money" around -- so my choices after seeing lipo12's opening were to either a) feed his/her Pirate Ship(s) by going for Big Money-Wharf OR b) go for Pirate Ship myself.  I always dislike PS-PS matches, as both sides end up often find themselves with no real way to end the game quickly.

I choose the Pirate Ship route.  However, I didn't notice Scheme until almost too late, realizing that my opponent could get a lot of my Coppers trashed quickly and ramp up his/her Pirate Ships faster than mine, while at the same time killing my "secondary" economy.  At this point, I'm pretty much dead.  I'm regretting not opening Scheme myself (Trade Route was pretty bad here! -- definitely a big mistake on my part).

lipo12 goes for Provinces pretty quickly, amassing quite a few.  Enough so that I couldn't catch up without a total, complete stall on his/her part (which wasn't really possible with Scheme around).  I figure out that Scheming ("Schemeing"?) a Secret Chamber can make it so that lipo12's Pirate Ships never go any higher than 5, but that doesn't really stop him/her from using them as action-Platina ("Platinums"?).  And then I see it - Vineyards!  I had discounted Vineyards as soon as I saw lipo12's initial buy, as the Potion would be vulnerable to the Pirate Ships.  But once my opponent was in the greening stage, he/she was no longer using the Pirate Ships for the attack!

However, with some luck, I ended up getting my PSs to $4, being able to buy Walled Villages and "Wharfs", and drawing my whole deck every turn while lipo12 was choking on the green.  The Schemes really helped "grease the wheels" here, allowing me to put back a Wharf, Walled Village, and Secret Chamber every turn.  In a "you-learn-something-new-everyday" moment, I figured out that the top-decked Secret Chamber served as a pseudo-sifter, since my opponent was guaranteed to play an attack card every turn (the Schemed Pirate Ship(s) -- his/her only economy).  With 2 Potions, and plenty of buys, I was able to juice up my Vineyards to 11 points each (virtual "Colonys"!), and end the game on piles.

The disparity of the final score (94-42) is NOT a good indicator of how the game went.  I really thought I was toast.

===================

Game4: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-101947-56cdc4fd.html

Colony/Platinum in the setup.
Kingdom: Ambassador, Feast, Haggler, Inn, Jack of All Trades, Mining Village, Mint, Quarry, Secret Chamber, and Wharf
#1 lipo12 opening: Secret Chamber / Wharf
#2 paddyodoors opening: Secret Chamber / Haggler

A LOT going on in this kingdom.  The elephant in the room is Ambassador, and I consider skipping it.  If it was a Province game, I would have -- choosing instead to power through with Wharf-BM.

However, the fact that it is a Colony game and the presence of Haggler/Quarry/2 Villages/Secret Chamber lead me to choose to not only go for Ambassador, but go for a BIG engine.  With all the +buys from "Wharfs", Quarry and Haggler just shine.  Inn helps both avoid terminal collision AND set up nice turns with newly-gained engine components from Haggler/Quarry buys.  Basically this was an engine-builder's fantasy.  I use 2 Ambassadors to thin out all of the starting cards (as well as the cards being sent over by his/her lone Ambassador), keeping the "wheels" of the engine nicely "greased."

My opponent's Ambassador is dwarfed by my 2 Ambassadors and superior draw/cycling.  He/she is able to buy a Mint, junking 5 Coppers, buy the first Platinum, and even Mint that Platinum on one occasion.  However, even while being able to pick up both a Colony and a Province, his/her deck cannot keep up with mine.

I have good shuffle luck and on turn 17, my 2 Hagglers, copious +buys, and Quarry allow me to end the game on piles (gaining 7 Secret Chambers on the last turn alone -- most while leeching on Colony buys).  Final score was 33-21.

===================

lipo12 was friendly and courteous, a very pleasant opponent.

Yeah, Gman, I was a bit sad all of our games were such slogs. However, for all the people who say player interaction doesn't really exist in Dominion, you can just point them towards our games. Every single one was decided/heavily influenced by player interaction. The cursers, the embargoes, going for Gardens/Duchies, all of the Ghost Ship/Torturer game, having to go for Treasure maps, etc. I was definitely glued to the screen during all of your turns.

Mad Dog beat silent revenge 4:3

I'm afraid I didn't grab logs, being something of a n00b to this. Maybe silent revenge will post them.

It was a very close and well fought match.

I can't remember all the details, which is a shame as there were some good games.

The first game I edged but can't remember the details. I may have done it by going for an extra expand to force an extra duchy at the end.

One game silent revenge got to the grand markets before I did and laid waste to em also using menageries to good effect.

The third last match featured tournament; silent revenge IIRC got to the followers first and edged it.

The second last match I actually used explorer for possibly the first time ever in what was effectively a big money game and came back to 3:3.

The decider had both black market and ill gotten gains. I edged the IGG rush 6-4 if I remember rightly, starting black market silver to silent revenge's black market beaurocrat then went bagging duchies while silent revenge grabbed a couple of apprentices. I managed to clear the duchy pile while spamming my hand with copper to edge a very close and well fought match.

Apologies re the logs which I hope I'll do better with next time.

sharkbait (4) over domignon (61) in a 3-0-1 series

Game 1 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/07/game-20121207-042348-2c71c333.html)

Key Cards - Torturer and Minion

With identical start, we both grab Torturer.  I know the game is over when he buys a Hoard with his first $6.  After that it's just a long grind as the only trashing in Trade Route and Shanty town is a sub-par village for Torturer chains.

sharkbait wins 43-05

Game 2 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/07/game-20121207-043408-f2919586.html)

Key Cards - Native Village, Mint and Treasure Map

I initially looked at this board and considered going for a HoP megaturn.  With my opening of Caravan/Silver I was actually considering it.  But with no net gain +Card except in the form of the Native Village mat, I didn't know how feasible it would be.  I called an audible when I drew 5 Copper on Turn 4 and decided to Mint them away and then just activate Treasure Maps.  I was able to activate earlier than domignon and with no +buy that easily led to the win.

sharkbait wins 39 - 27

Game 3 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/07/game-20121207-044603-1e82c126.html)

Key Cards - Ambassador, Platinum and Adventurer

There is no draw except for cantip actions and Adventurer so no engine too viable here.  But it is Colony/Platinum so it is beneficial to go with Ambassador.  I opt to grab an IW at start so I can pick up some of the cheap cantrip villages tot easily get multiple Ambassador turns.  My opponent buys a curse early in the Ambassador war with a Worker's Village +buy.  That really did not help him as I was already maintaining a slight lead.

shark_bait win 10 - (-100)

Game 4 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/07/game-20121207-045728-b47ca9fd.html)

Key Cards - Grand Market, Smugglers, Jester, Remodel, Apothecary

I really want to hit up the Apothecary this game as IMO it is an incredibly underrated card.  This kind of fall flat on its face when I get my potion on Turn 5.  I am gifted with a GM with Navigator/Silver/Silver on Turn 6 and I deliberate for a moment knowing that my opponent will probably smuggle it.  I decide to buy it anyways knowing that I can simply smuggle it back for a 2-1 initial split.  When his Jester then hits my GM on his Turn 8 I'm not optimistic about the outcome.  We trade GM's with Jester hits on Turn 15 and at this point I am behind.  Down by 7 points with 1 Province left I prepare myself for the next game.  Then my Jester hits a VP card of his I get the last Province to force a tie.  At that point my opponent offered to call the match.

Thanks for the series and hopefully next time I'll get the video recordings.

I'm afraid I won against Personman by forfeit  :( To quote him,

I think I should just forfeit.
(Could an admin check what I say, looking at my PM, or should I make a printscreen ?)

Sad, cause I registered to play as much as possible in this tournament. However, I hope that next rounds will be better for me.

Mad dog won 4-3. I actually have all the logs except game 7, which I cant seem to find

Game 1: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-140850-04ee5f68.html
Mad dog was able to get an early expand that was a huge difference maker.

Game 2: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-141623-d1556519.html
Getting two early witches with bazaar was key here, and then was able to use the double masquerade to spoil his hands.

Game 3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-142645-7fd70176.html
Could never get the watchtower/festival/highway engine to line up and create and powerful turns, and he had some well timed Barons that gave him a commanding win.

Game 4: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-143856-d33afde6.html
Ambassador deck with no +actions available. Was able to successfully use the menagerie to get 7/10 grand markets and pull even 2-2.

Game 5: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-144636-c1f45368.html
Used Horse Traders/Loan/Peddler to replace coppers with Peddlers, while Mad dog went for explorers. With no +action cards, Peddler was able to win out.

Game 6: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-145316-83941ad6.html
Mad dog's early hunting parties were the difference here, and could never really get my throne rooms to get extra actions in a deck that otherwise had no +actions. Mad dog had an early province that took out a few of what would have been decent tournament turns.

Game 7: dont have the log, but Mad dog used ill gotten gains (6-4 edge) and then ran out the duchies to take the match.

Well played, good luck going forward.

There is virtual +$ on the board, i.e. secret chamber. Only thing you need is a wharf and a secret chamber. Once you have them both it's no problem to acquire more villages, schemes, wharvfesss' and secret chambers. That should make a province route for you easier to walk. But vineyards obviously were more promising.

Round 1--shraeye beats cherdano 4-2.

Game 1 (cherdano-49 shraeye-36): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/07/game-20121207-142301-c1a10fe3.html
I thought the winning strategy on this board would be Bazaars/Monuments and use Forge to turn estates into more Monuments to get them played.  Cherdano gets more monuments though, and more treasure.  I get behind at the start, and try to catch up by being fancy with Farmland; it just junks my deck and cherdano claims the win.

Game 2 (shraeye-49 cherdano-34): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/07/game-20121207-144618-cdad0ff5.html
We both open silver/tournament on a Colony board.  Mountebank features, and Lookout was our best trasher.  I decide to buy an early Province and luck out as it hits and I pick up Followers to help the curse split (which I think I still lost, since I bought no Moats, and cherdano bought 3).  Game ends on piles with curses/estates/tournament gone.  My second to last turn, I had a scare, where I played Trusty steed for cards/actions, when just actions/+2$ would have sealed the win.  I had to watch one more turn full of level2 Cities and cross my fingers.

Game 3 (cherdano-42 shraeye-44): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/07/game-20121207-145850-7ca5d4f8.html
Both open Silver/Trader.  I am thinking to go straight money, but pick up 2 labs and a market with $5 turns.  Farmland is on this board as well.  Near the end, we both avoided buying province on PPE rule, cherdano tries once, and I hit the 8 I need to win.

Game 4 (cherdano-25 shraeye-38): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/07/game-20121207-151510-ab320810.html
Young Witch with Native Village as a bane.  I use Warehouse for cycling. Cherdano opts for Black Market, and more fishing villages, trying to win curse split.  Out of the Black Market he grabs an early wharf, and a witch as well.  I buy mostly money (late trade route) and win despite curses.  I had a last turn, where I remebered NOT to draw a card to my NV mat (which was empty), since my Warehouse and Trade Route hadn't come on that shuffle yet.  It turns out Warehouse was next, and using that got me exactly the 8 I needed to finish.

Game 5 (cherdano-38 shraeye-26): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/07/game-20121207-152623-55a530b0.html
Fishing Villages, Milita, Bishop.  I tried too hard to get fancy with the Fishing Village stack, and use HoP as +buy to get these as well.  Cherdano's more sensible strategy of buy gold, get 5 provinces ended up being stronger.

Game 6 (shraeye-42 cherdano resigns): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/07/game-20121207-153712-69234934.html
Mining Village/Embassy with King's Court.  Also pawns for +buys and Expand to turn Estates into crucial engine pieces.  I probably didn't do this efficiently enough, as I get my 4th colony on Turn 17.  but I hit 11$ early enough, that I went for getting Colonies over getting treasure. (colonies on turns 11/13/16/17, platinum on 14, gold on 16).  Cherdano was using Apothecaries to line up his KC better, and may have gone double colony soon, but my go-for-the-throat strategy won out.

This was an awesome set of games, really my heart was beating like crazy the whole time; thanks cherdano!

andwilk 4-1 ilpars

andwilk 2-0 ilpars (in progress)

Game 3: ilpars 32-16 andwilk (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-124446-30807cb1.html)
I can describe this game in a meme... ready?

Game 4: andwilk 51-49 ilpars (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-125531-4473149a.html)
Fast Double Tactician board with Bishops and Peddlers.  I get the double-Tactician set up first and am eventually able to buy a Province and Bishop a Peddler consistantly for 11 VP/turn in the end.

IGG-rush and I open 5/2.  I win the rush 7-3, but it also seemed like my opponent wasn't familiar with IGG-rush type games.

slurms and I had an extremely close and hard fought match in which relaximadoctor came out on top 4-3-2. Ill-gotten gains seemed to appear in every game and curses abounded throughout the match. We missed recording a few matches but here are 6:

Title: shocksteel vs. Xenoman
Post by: Xenoman on December 08, 2012, 07:19:30 pm
shocksteel (2) vs. Xenoman (4)

A great set of games with a great opponent!

shocksteel 31 - Xenoman (resign): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-141229-305b36e8.html

Despite being a Colony game, Tournaments prove to be the decider here.

Xenoman 42 - shocksteel 32: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-143828-95581e18.html

This one came down to a risk. Since I started, I couldn't tie the game, and I had to keep overcoming the occasional Curse thrown by Young Witches. Eventually I gambled and went for the last two Provinces, and got lucky.

shocksteel 45 - Xenoman 30: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-145408-aec1f424.html

In this one, shocksteel came out ahead. I couldn't win the game, but I bought the penultimate province. It was shocksteel's superior Vault play that secured this victory.

Xenoman 26 - shocksteel 24: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-150323-af195828.html

I elected to go with a DoubleJack strategy, hoping it would overcome the Mountebanks; it did, but just barely. I again risk the penultimate province, hoping my deck was better able to handle the bloat due to the extra Silvers. I came out ahead.

shocksteel 34 - Xenoman 38: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-151440-f106fdb1.html

My double Steward may not have been the best choice, but in the end two trimmed decks come down to the wire.

shocksteel 23 - Xenoman 24: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-152025-2b567bf7.html

I open double Masquerade because of the Mountebank, thinking that shocksteel may go for it (and I was right). It still came down to one turn.

Great games! I've never played Dominion in a competitive context. It certainly is different!

Further to relaximadoctor's post above, some short commentary:
The match took a while, 9 games all up including draws.

Round 1 relaximadoctor defeated Slurms 4-3

G1 Slurms(31) - relaximadoctor(33)  I just go for big money while relaximadoctor cleans up his deck with Apprentice and Steward.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-140825-245d011b.html relaximadoctor wins

G2 Slurms(33) - relaximadoctor(46) Again I go for money with Bank. relaximadoctor cleans up his deck with Mint and Bishop
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-142001-d002f6e0.html relaximadoctor wins

G3 Slurms(42) - relaximadoctor(27) warehouse/inn/tunnel with Familiar. I get some early Familiars to win curse war 9-1 racing to buy out the provinces before relaximadoctor could catch up.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-143543-c2a6dd75.html Slurms wins

G4 relaximadoctor(38) - Slurms(30) Remodel/Ghost Ship. relaximadoctor won more Caravans and remodelled Province to Province a couple of times to end the game before I could catch up
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-151347-191c0716.html relaximadoctor wins

G5 Slurms(46) - relaximadoctor(18) Jack/IGG I get Jacks early whereas relaximadoctor gets IGGs. I end up getting the larger amount of IGGs later and am able to draw enough money with Jack consistently to buy out the Provinces.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-152034-8fb5a408.html Slurms wins

G6 relaximadoctor(lost) - Slurms(won). Forgot to keep the log file for this one.

G7 relaximadoctor(42) - Slurms (resigned) Apothecary/Golem/Ghost Ship/IGG relaximadoctor gets an early upgrade vs my IGG and managed to get more Apothecaries and stay ahead the whole game, Ghost Ship is punishing!
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-155050-c8fb652d.html relaximadoctor wins

Thanks relaximadoctor, some close games.

Wingnut (44) beats WHARF 2 THA BRIDGE (21) 4-3

Game 1 - http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-200706-5844e3c3.html

Swindler and Duke game. WHARF played better and also had better luck with the Swindlers. Just a bit of a slog. Nothing much to say.
WHARF wins 54-43

Game 2 - http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-202114-e4c560e3.html

Goons game. I opened Chancellor/Potion aiming for Apothecary while WHARF opened Silver/Silver. I used a Mint to trash 3 Coppers allowing me to use some spare buys on copper, especially with Apothecary around to suck them up too. Also, Royal Seal ended up being key allowing me to play topdeck Goons on turns 10-12 and then topdeck Crossroads and Apothecary on turn 13. Ultimately, the game was decided by me reaching the double Goons threshold earlier, forcing a tactical change from WHARF to Silk Road. When the slog continued, I was able to reach Province twice at the end while he was not.
Wingnut wins 70-58

Game 3 - http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-202523-557fca01.html

Fishing Village/Embassy/Council Room/Monument. WHARF oddly skipped Fishing Village in his opening buy and also never picked up a Council Room. This doomed him as I played Monument more and picked off 5 Provinces in 13 turns. This also doubles as one of the best games of Dominion I have ever played as far as my play.
Wingnut wins 45-23

Game 4 - http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-202952-be9999c9.html

Just a dull board where I crazily opened Noble Brigand and paid for it. I never completely caught up after that as WHARF used his Apprentices to great effect.
WHARF wins 31-24

Game 5 - http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-203605-32231515.html

This was my bad beat game (and it wasn't bad compared to the next game). I opened 5-2 on a board without a great 5 (Festival often is, but in this kingdom it was basically a Woodcutter) and no 2. Still, I made a run at it with Harems and got close before breaking PPR to take the lead and hoping for WHARF to not have it. He did.
WHARF wins 35-31

Game 6 - http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-204318-e1c67f7b.html

I opened 5-2 on a board with Witch, Hamlet and Peddler. Also, it was Colonies. Good game. WHARF had no chance. It ended on piles ultimately (Peddlers, Mengeries and Curses)
Wingnut wins 28-12

Game 7 - http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/08/game-20121208-210112-af69d208.html

Finally, a Possession game to decide everything. Seriously. In part because Torturer and Minion were vetoed. I took an early lead with Possession as I used Library to keep bypassing it in his deck keeping him from playing it until he adapted. And adapt he did. After turn 14, I had 4 Provinces and a Duchy and WHARF had nothing. Then WHARF double Possessed me on turn 15 and and 16, getting back into the game with some nice play of my deck (trashing Provinces with Remake to lower handsize for additional plays of Library to cycle through and get to what was needed). Ultimately, I bought a Duchy on my final turn and ended the game on the Possessed turn by Remaking two Potions into Duchies and buying the final one while also gaining the final Library with University to end the game on piles (Bazaars also gone).
Wingnut wins 39-27 and wins the match 4-3

Game3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-100542-fa32503e.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/06/game-20121206-100542-fa32503e.html)

By far my toughest game.

Kingdom: Envoy, Pearl Diver, Pirate Ship, Possession (Potion), Scheme, Secret Chamber, Trade Route, Vineyard (Potion), Walled Village, and Wharf
#1 lipo12 opening: Pirate Ship / Scheme
#2 paddyodoors opening: Pirate Ship / Trade Route

...

See, THIS is why I'm not one of the most notable Dominion players! =)

Seriously, thanks.  I am pretty bad at finding a use for Secret Chamber's action outside of Grand Market.  This is quite enlightening.

I hate to do this.  I mean I really hate to do this.

Here is a link to a solitaire game that I played for a few seconds on Isotropic at 5:04.  I had been waiting for Orange to complete our match since around 4:50.  We were supposed to play today at 5:00 to complete our match.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/09/game-20121209-140425-aebc2cdb.html

I've messaged Orange and I hope he's ok.

If he doesn't get back to me, I guess I win by default?  If he does, I'd be more than happy to finish up our match, but I won't be available until Tuesday evening...

I think you give more than 10 minutes lead time. I don't know how much, but I would guess 10 minute leeway is not such a big deal, unless you stressed "it must be EXACTLY this time because my schedule is very cramped" or something when setting up the match time.

So, I finally got to play agains MasterThing2, after having trouble reaching him during the week.

luliin - MasterThing2   4-0 (and one draw)

Game 1: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/09/game-20121209-162832-1e41e9ea.html luliin - MasterThing 2, 48 - 27

A bishop heavy game, where I went for a Lookout to slim down my deck further. It ended up as a less optimal golden deck, but I managed to empty the Province pile.

Game 2: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/09/game-20121209-163507-277bd16f.html luliin - MasterThing2, 34 - 34

He got an early lead on the crazy Ironworks - GH board, and somehow I managed to end on a tie. It was mostly luck, though.

Game 3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/09/game-20121209-164301-a4543491.html luliin - MasterThing2, 39 - 32

Not a very excitinng board. Quarry made Market a hot target but my Adventurer managed to get me a few Provinces. Won by having a few Duchies.

Game 4: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/09/game-20121209-165005-fadec697.html luliin - MasterThing2, 50 - 31

A board dominated by IGG. I bought more green and got an early expand, being able to expand the IGG's to Provinces and secure my lead.

Game 5: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/09/game-20121209-165847-208f88f5.html luliin - MasterThing2, 53 - 33

He went for Silk Roads, and I went for Monuments, Young Witch and some other actions and ended up with an ok deck able to buy a few Provinces and winning by three-piling.

All in all, it was really fun to finally be able to play our games.

buggy has been more than understanding but I've just been way too busy, and couldn't catch up to him in time yesterday.  We had five good games earlier in the week and he was up 3-2, so he is a worthy winner.  Call Game 6 a forfeit and advance him 4-2.  My apologies to buggy and all for not being able to get the last one/two games in.

Round 1 Results: scryordie (50) vs. Krachan

50 4 - 2 Krachan

Some interesting games in this round. Both Krachan and I acknowledged that we played sub optimally in many games, and thought it would be interesting to see some great engine builders play these sets.

Game 1: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/09/game-20121209-061433-5137f474.html) scryordie 33 - Krachan 31

The board seemed to have some engine potential, especially aided by the black market. We both try to go for the grandmarkets, which I feel was a trap in this game. Our decks end up fairly terminal heavy and the game lasts fairly long I manage to get the win aided by first seat advantage and a Horn of Plenty from the black market deck.

Game 2: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/09/game-20121209-062837-a1cb79a8.html) scryordie 50 - Krachan 49

This being a Colony game, big money seems to be a pretty poor choice. Minion stands out as the natural engine component, but a Minion deck is hurt by the lack of villages and non terminal money. Still, we both go for Minions, but I use some early buys on Islands, which turns out to be a huge blunder. My opponent's Minion attacks and my terminal Islands clog up my deck and make it nearly impossible to pick up Minions. Krachan gets the split, I think for sure I am done for.

I pick up some Platinum and I am forced to break the PCR. Fortunately, the best my opponent can do the next turn is to Expand an Estate into a Duchy. I get a Colony the next turn and get a very lucky win.

Game 3: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/09/game-20121209-063558-92a44de6.html) scryordie 31 - Krachan 50

Engine potential is lacking in this board, and we both try to go for some sort of big money. I am attracted to Tunnel, as I know that the 2VP that each ones gives can be hard to beat in a Province game. I use Courtyard and Harvest as my activators. Krachan goes for some standard Courtyard BM. My deck takes too long before it gets going and Krachan is able to grab a huge lead in Provinces, and he pretty cleanly closes this game out.

Game 4: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/09/game-20121209-064934-f4e7e433.html) scryordie 52 - Krachan 11

There are no villages on this board, but that doesn't stop it from being a big engine game (in retrospect Double Jack wouldn't have been back as well). Grand Markets, Conspirators, Horn of Plenty, and Minions!

Krachan goes for the Grand Market Conspirator deck (I feel he buys too few Minions, however). I am attracted to the Horn of Plenty megaturn (my favorite strategy in the game!) Spice Merchant is an amazing activator for HoP, and my deck gets rolling quickly.

I am able to get 5 Provinces on turn 16, which puts me in a command position. Krachan starts to green the next turn, but it is too late. I triple Province the turn after to seal the deal. This is one of the games I am most proud of

Game 5: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/09/game-20121209-065927-bb2a1ed3.html) scryordie 32 - Krachan 35

We both go for a Swindler opening and look to transition to some kind of money strategy. I aim to aide mine with Menagerie, Nobles, and Festivals, as does my opponent.

The midgame goes in my favor, as I am able to get some good swindles. I turn his Nobles into Harems, and I have a much bigger engine as I begin to green. Unfortunately, the piles begin to run very fast. I get some bad draws my last turns and am unable to grab the Provinces which would have put me soundly ahead.

Game 6: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-102734-ef07fb3e.html) scryordie 34 - Krachan 13

We both open Silver/Black Market and aim to grab early Witches while picking up some power houses from the Black Market (Villages and Ambassador). Krachan gets unlucky and can't get a Witch on his first reshuffle. I squander this advantage by going for a somewhat schizophrenic Scrying Pool strategy. I think the Pool was a sound plan, but I got too many terminals too soon. The midgame turns into a slog of poorly optimized and heavily cursed decks. Three piles are obviously running, and I am able to pick up the essential Vineyards before closing out the game by buying the last Nobles.

Thanks for the good games, Krachan, I hope to see you around in the future.

DG 25: 27 glengarry http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-133351-d81d4396.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-133351-d81d4396.html)

Game 1 - Hunting party, swindler and horn of plenty: I was planning to take immediate hunting parties then take a horn of plenty later if the deck was working, but cut my plan to a very simple treasure deck once nothing was working. Glengarry went straight for talisman based variety and he very quickly had more assets in the deck.
Game 2 - Familiar/masquerade start with king's courts coming in. I went for a tighter deck looking deck with some good things from vaults but it never really happened and in fact just fed Glengarry's bigger tribute based deck.
Game 3 - This is a peculiar game where there's a delicate balance between an expanding gardens deck and a tight ambassador deck with ventures. I thought that Glengarry was going for the gardens at the start but in fact he took a second ambassador with the bureaucrat and that persuaded me to regear for a bigger gardens deck. It was still a pretty even call but I think I would have lost clearly in a province war.
Game 4 - Wharf engine. I get nice draws that are hard to beat.
Game 5 - We both are looking to trim down, get grand markets through silver and remakes, and add shanty town/torturer for attacks. I get bad draws at the start and miss entirely out on the torturers but glengarry gets bad draws at the end and that lets me sneak a three pile win.
Game 6 - We play this fairly similarly with lots of good 5 cost cards here. Again I've got a tighter deck with less copper but glengarry is able to draw through it with warehouses. There's a tight endgame and he comes up with a stylish finish, trashing a feast for the last city and then using the new +1 coin from the cities to give exactly the coins to buy out the last two feasts.

Lost 4-3-2 to zaubererer. I think my isotropic inexperience got the better of me as I made a notable misclick, some stupid choices, and some novice mistakes throughout.  Though I somehow managed to get my best wins with alt VP, usually one of my weakest areas when I play in-person!

Game 1 (zaubererer 39 - SirSlugma 34): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-130442-f97c7398.html
Pretty similar strategies here, not sure if my Crossroads were ever worth it.  I think the lack of worthwhile cards at $5 made his early Talisman a good call.

Game 2 (SirSlugma 39 - zaubererer 39): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-131934-5b17f2d2.html
Wharf-FG mirror.  First player advantage helped me take the lead here, though the Bazaar was a poor choice.  Turn 7 could've been double Fool's Gold, but my inexperience with FG caused me to ignore that option until after I had already made the purchase.  Oops.

Game 3 (zaubererer 52 - SirSlugma 52): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-132952-14433dca.html
Hunting Party with Colonies.  Thought Chancellor worked better than his Crossroads, and allowed me to catch up to him despite his 5/2 start and more HPs.  I took the draw when I had the chance.

Game 4 (SirSlugma 59 - zaubererer 42): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-133732-a7abe519.html
DoubleJack game, thought I played this decently well though I'm not sure I should've ever trashed my last Estate turn 14.  I suppose it worked out for me anyway.

Game 5 (zaubererer 27 - SirSlugma 21): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-134844-d796b2cb.html
I stupidly went after Scrying Pool without even looking at the board.  I think I should've been crushed but somehow managed to hang around for a while.  I think I blew it turn 16, where I had a lead and went after the Ironworks to try to end the game rather than taking a Duchy for points.

Game 6 (SirSlugma 44 - zaubererer 42): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-135616-a2aad727.html
Gardens vs...Haggler-BM?  I think I got fairly fortunate with Swindler and I gambled a little bit going after the Gardens.  I probably hit them too hard and too soon, but winning the split 8-0 is pretty strong in any situation.

Game 7 (zaubererer 42 - SirSlugma 17): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-140618-cc31b3ef.html
Ambassador war, got creamed and had no chance to catch up.  I'm curious if there's something I could've done here to have not gotten stomped or if I was doomed by the luck of the game.  I feel like if I kept it simple with Envoy BM or something I would've gotten crushed by estates and curses by his slimmed deck.

Game 8 (SirSlugma 50 - zaubererer 38): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-141630-095daec5.html
Vineyards vs. IGG rush.  I feel like Mountebank and Familiar weakened the strength of the IGG rush, so I went for an early Familiar and hoped to transition into Ironworks/Vineyards, which worked quite well.  I didn't balance the Potions quite right, but I thought my strategy was sound.  This was a fun one.

Game 9 (zaubererer 38 - SirSlugma 24): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-142320-052f63af.html
Wharf-FG mirror. (again)  zaubererer had 5/2 and I was pretty much done there.  YW was probably a mistake but I felt like I needed to gamble to have any chance of catching up.

Not a long adjournment for glengarry and I. We played a final game which was sadly a university/city blowout where I get nice draws and power ahead.

DG 30 : 12 glengarry http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-144426-ab483d31.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/10/game-20121210-144426-ab483d31.html)

Shame about that last game as we had a good tight competitive series throughout with plenty of close finishes. Thanks for the series Lee and hope you get a nice holiday.

Round 2

() | (_) ^/     4 - 1     Mad Dog

=====================
Game 1:  (I didn't grab the log)
paddyodoors 1 - 9 Mad Dog

This was a Sea Hag - IGG - Colony game.  I never once saw $5.  Lost the curse split with Mad Dog going for IGG on $5.  Piles on Curses, Estates, and Hamlets.  Ugh.  Needless to say, no Colonies.

=====================
Game 2: (I didn't grab the log)
paddyodoors more - less Mad Dog

This was a fun one, a new opening for me: Fool's Gold/Horn of Plenty.  Mad Dog went for Fool's Gold/Contraband, eventually picking up University and Watchtower.  I figured I'd get a Merchant Ship or two after the FGs were gone, but there was no need -- I won the Fool's Gold, and gained Watchtowers for draw and top-decking of new treasure (or other Watchtowers).  Once I hit 44 points, he resigned (not enough points left on the board to catch up).

=====================
I'll comment on games 3-5 later.  Since I have the logs for them, I don't need to try to do a memory dump like I did for the first two.

Game 3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-105310-b7eea1f3.html
=====================
Game 4: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-110901-9a733126.html
=====================
Game 5: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-112347-f2081049.html
=====================

All in all, Mad Dog was a solid opponent, flexible with scheduling, and courteous to boot.  10/10 would play again (even game 1!).

More to come later, I'll make a new post.

Round 2

Drab Emordnilap 4--1 luliin

First off, I want to thank luliin; I was tense the whole way through this match. All games were identical start/point counter/no veto. The games:

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-150833-c358f4e6.html
cards in supply: Bishop, Farming Village, Oracle, Pawn, Potion, Remake, Spy, Thief, Tunnel, University, and Warehouse

First weird thing: Nothing costs more than $4. I get to go first on a board dominated by Warehouse/Tunnel, but we both open Remake. I get to Remake two Estates on turn 4, where luliin is stuck trashing two Copper. I gain three Golds on turn 8, and four on turn 10, and I'm well off into buying Provinces. luliin tries to use Bishop to make up the spread, but it's not fast enough.

Drab Emordnilap 53--40 luliin

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-151031-5ecb8aa5.html
cards in supply: Adventurer, Council Room, Develop, Explorer, Jester, Mine, Minion, Philosopher's Stone, Pirate Ship, Potion, and Trading Post

We started without identical starting hands and point counter, and agree to redo the same board. This link is just for completeness.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-151603-943db2f2.html
cards in supply: Adventurer, Council Room, Develop, Explorer, Jester, Mine, Minion, Philosopher's Stone, Pirate Ship, Potion, and Trading Post

I'm somewhat lost on this board. The opposite of the previous board; almost everything costs $5. I think about Minion but decide to do Trading Post into Council Room Big Money. luliin takes advantage and ends up with 8 of the Minions. We end up splitting the victory cards straight down the middle, and I end up with the loss because of the one Estate I trashed to Trading post.  :-[

Drab Emordnilap 42--43 luliin

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-152458-4ceddef4.html
cards in supply: Bureaucrat, Chapel, City, Familiar, Goons, Great Hall, Horse Traders, Library, Mine, Potion, and Shanty Town

The first real 'engine board'. I shudder because I fear Goons, and I fear Familiar luck. Sure enough, I draw Potion with three Estates on turn 3... but Chapel saves the day, trashing the Estates. luliin's Potion falls to turn 5, and I win the Curse split 6/4 (with the curses being trashed out shortly afterwards). That turns on my Cities, however, and I start drawing my (small) deck every turn. luliin buys the first Goons on turn 10, but doesn't play it until turn 12, and by that point I have enough Cities to draw out from under it. I start loading up on Cities and Goons, and end up 3 piling on turn 19.

Drab Emordnilap 138 -- 2 luliin

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-153936-98983eb9.html
cards in supply: Ambassador♦, Black Market, Golem, Horn of Plenty, Horse Traders, Inn, Possession, Potion, Stash, Swindler, Vault, and Witch

Note: No one bought Black Market this game.

We both open Ambassador x2, but mine stick together like glue the first few shuffles. luliin pulls ahead, and I don't get above $4 until turn 13. luliin buys a Province on turn 16 with a much richer deck than mine, and I figure the only way I can catch up at this point is Possession. I buy Potion on turns 15 and 17, and buy a Possession on turn 18. Between Possession, Golem into Possession, and Inn shuffling them back in, I manage to make luliin pass me a Gold, 3 Duchies, and 3 Provinces (as well as returning a 4th Province). After 40 turns, the game finally ends.

Drab Emordnilap 54--32 luliin

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-154715-cc112afe.html
cards in supply: Bank, Coppersmith, Hamlet, Haven, Hoard, Island, Loan, Swindler, Trading Post, and Walled Village

Another set without any real engine, Swindlers rule the day. Silvers become Loans, Islands become Coppersmiths, Trading Posts become Duchies, and even Golds become Hoards. Nothing is safe! I consider opening Swindler x2, but play it safe with Swindler/Silver, since I'm up in the match. I buy a Walled Village on turn 8, figuring I'd have too many terminals thanks to Swindler, but it rides the top of my deck until it lets me combo two Coppersmiths to hit $6 for a Duchy on turn 20. I hit a Duchy late with Swindler, which gives me some more wiggle room in terms of buying the last couple Provinces.

Drab Emordnilap 42--35 luliin

Again, thanks luliin for the tight games, and if games 3 and 4 weren't in a tournament, I would apologize for weeks. Best of luck to you in the other brackets!

UPDATE:
Round 2

() | (_) ^/     4 - 1     Mad Dog
...

I'll comment on games 3-5 later.  Since I have the logs for them, I don't need to try to do a memory dump like I did for the first two.

Game 3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-105310-b7eea1f3.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-105310-b7eea1f3.html)

SUPER super quick game.

Kingdom: Bridge, City, Explorer, Fool's Gold, Lighthouse, Masquerade, Outpost, Quarry, Tunnel, and Walled Village
#1 Mad Dog opening: Bridge / Fool's Gold
#2 paddyodoors opening: Bridge / Masquerade

Now, of note is that we were just coming off of a game where I beat Mad Dog with tons of Fool's Gold.  He opened Bridge, which I think is the only/best Fool's Gold enabler on this board.  So, I'm thinking if there is going to be a run on FGs, I should go City which is a HUGE enabler for Bridge.  I take a risk, opening Bridge/Masq so that I have the ability to pick up FGs and trash at the same time, getting set for the City rush.  I luck out BIG time, buying two FGs and playing my Masq to full effect on Turns 3 and 4 respectively.

Mad Dog wins FGs 7/3, but loses Cities 3/7.  I pick up 3 more Bridges.

On Turn 10, I end the game by piledriving Estates along with 3 Province buys, winning 27-14.  Much of the credit is due to my luck coming off of my high-risk opening.

=============================

Game 4: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-110901-9a733126.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-110901-9a733126.html)

Quickly turns into a bit of a slog.

Kingdom: Coppersmith, Ghost Ship, Grand Market, Island, Minion, Moat, Scheme, Scout, Stash, and Tunnel
#1 Mad Dog opening: Silver / Silver
#2 paddyodoors opening: Island / Silver

I look at this board, and see Minion/Grand Market.  Island is generally a bad opening because it can really hurt you from being able to hit $5, which is crucial here.  But I take the chance that the one Silver will get me to $5, and I opt for the very light pseudo-trashing of Island (along with the modest VP gain).  For the second game in a row, luck pays off and I get a $5 hand on T3 and a $4/Island/Estate hand on T4.

We each hit $5 on T3, but he goes for a Ghost Ship while I go for a Minion.

We end up splitting the Minions 5/5, and neither of us gains Grand Markets very quickly.  With Scheme, I'm able to topdeck a Moat every once in a while, blocking his attacks (unless it was Minion and I didn't like my hand that particular turn).  Scheme, however, is generally bad in Minion games.

5/5 Minion splits are hard since it really isn't enough money for one player to really have a Minion-only engine.  Eventually, I get some Tunnels and they start to generate Gold for me due to the discarding from both of our Minions.

With the Tunnels and Islands and then Provinces & Duchies in my deck, I decide to buy a couple of Scouts, which actually seemed to help a bunch (see turn 23 -- gaining two more Golds right before my last reshuffle).

We have a super close game, neither one of us able to end it with the last pile (Grand Markets) due to how close in score we were.  In the end, with the rewards of my Tunneling (Gold), I am able to get the last Grand Market and buy a Tunnel for a two-point victory (33-31).

=============================

Game 5: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-112347-f2081049.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/11/game-20121211-112347-f2081049.html)

Crazy attack board.

Kingdom: Ambassador, Bank, Chapel, Embassy, Festival, Goons, Hunting Party, Jester, Margrave, and Smithy
#1 Mad Dog opening: Chapel / Silver
#2 paddyodoors opening: Silver / Ambassador

Oof.  Wow.  Ambassador or Chapel?  Goons/Jester/Margrave?  Festivals, as the only village, are going to be key.  But Hunting Party is just so strong at finding you that one card that would make this turn perfect, am I right?

I am worried about Ambassador -- if he gets some good Chapeling in and starts on the engine, my Ambassador isn't going to really hurt his deck.  If he gets an Ambassador and I don't get good Chapeling, then I'm going to have a terrible deck.  I think this situation is actually REALLY swingy, and the fact that all the components for some really nice attack-based engine are sitting right there at $5 makes me very nervous.

I open Silver to see what he pairs with his Chapel opening.  He pairs it with Silver, so I go for attack (Ambassador), hoping that by luck he won't be able to keep up with the trashing.  Turn 3 gets me a Hunting Party (so as to see Ambassador more).

At first I think I fail -- my T4 has no Ambassador, so that has missed the reshuffle.  I decide to "double down" on junking his deck, so I buy another Ambassador.  T5?  BOTH OF THEM.  WITH NO ESTATES IN HAND.  Oh my.  Meanwhile, across town, his deck has been doing this:

T1: buy Chapel
T2: buy Silver
T3: Trash 2 Estates, buy Silver.
T4: buy Smithy
T5: buy Festival
T6: buy Goons
T7: buy Hunting Party
T8: play Goons, buy Goons AND Hunting Party

After his T8, I'm pretty sure that I'm dead.  I've only Ambassadored 2 Coppers and 2 Estates.  I even type in the chat: "you're way ahead of me on this one!"  However, he's only trashed 2 Estates with his Chapel... so I've got some hope yet of junking his deck.

And, with plenty of luck, that's what happens.  I end the game on piles during Turn 20 after only one other multi-Goons turn (two were played on Turn 18).  I think I won this one through luck and a few sub-optimal plays from my opponent (like Silver buys after the engine components were in place).  The last turn was where I picked up most of the points for the 51-12 point win.

Round 2--shraeye beats Wingnut 4-2.

Game 1 (Wingnut-53 shraeye-56): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-202124-b5619cd8.html
Opening board has Colony but is full of attacks: Militia, Sea Hag, Swindler, Ambassador.  Somehow I don't think I've played with Ambassador on a cursy board before, it was interesting. I open Sea Hag/Swindler, and my first swindler hit his Ambassador right after he bought it.  This let's me get to Hunting Parties first, winning that split.  Wingnut's apothecary lets him line things up better though, and he might have come back, if not for my swindler hitting one of his hunting parties in the early greening stage.

Game 2 (Wingnut-35 shraeye-6): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-203202-63cffc04.html
I get beat down on a conspirator board.  My first 5 is a Festival, while Wingnut's first 5 is the smarter buy of a Margrave.  At the time I thought, "hey more collision for him." But the discard attack keeps me from hitting $5 very often, and Wingnut soon picks up more Festivals than me.  Conspirators/Wishing Wells empty, and Wingnut piles out Festivals for the win.

Game 3 (shraeye-46 Wingnut-36): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-204110-4d16efc1.html
This game features a really good decision by me, very exciting!  Another Hunting Party board, but with an early $5 I grab a Haggler instead so I can pick up Throne Rooms/Peddlers with future HP buys.  Once I'm in the province range, this is nice because there are Grand Markets to pick up as well.  Wingnut is behind but still in it, when he has a terrible Turn 12, which really kills all chances.

Game 4 (Wingnut-30 shraeye-2): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-205118-79900230.html
I open Develop/Cutpurse, and luck decides to compound the problems that I walked right into.  My first turn with more than $4 is turn 9, where I hit $8.  At this point, Wingnut has hit me with plenty ambassadoring, and once he gets his Apprentice machine up, I am done for.

Game 5 (shraeye-44 Wingnut-36): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-210525-c0630794.html
A very exciting board, I don't think I've opened Chapel/Tunnel before.  But Hamlet was on the board, so I figure I can pick that up even when I've trashed most my economy and quickly boost back to getting Golds.  I pick up a Council Room for more cards and +buy so I can win the tunnel split 6/2.  Near the end, I needed more card draw and should have had another Council Room.  Wingnut changes plans when he sees he's behind in getting Tunnels/Golds, and buys more Council Rooms.  We actually tie on all other victory cards and I win with the +8 advantage from Tunnels.

Game 6 (Wingnut-22 shraeye-64): http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-211737-d1a0da38.html
A colony board which has Possession (a card I am verry inexperienced with) and Apothecary/Quarry which can really aid in picking these up.  I ultimately decide to avoid Potion, and open Tournament/Silver.  This board also has Caravan, Cutpurse, Mountebank.  My plan is to junk up my deck fast, and his deck as well, so that he makes minimal use of the Possessed turns.  Wingnut gets hit with plenty of bad luck, as his opening Potion comes on turn 5, and is just short of an early Possession.  His first possession comes right before the turn in which I win Followers, so I narrowly missed giving him that as well.  I hit plenty of $9 and grab platinums, eventually buying out Provinces instead of Colonies.

Match report for Darkmage2011 (Fading) (8th) vs. Tables (25th)
Match result: Darkmage 1-4 Tables (1 Draw)

Game 1 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-100843-71e4e043.html): Fading 61-55 Tables
A colony Hunting Party game. I go for a pretty boring HP strat, with Festival as my +X, figuring that well it's the best I can do and extra buys could be useful. Fading goes for a more engine approach, using Envoy, Hunting Party and also using HP to discard Tunnels. His approach pays off, eventually giving him a double Colony megaturn. We end up sharing the Colonies and getting 2 Provinces each, but his 3 Tunnels give him the win.

Game 2 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-101537-44fe43fc.html): Tables 44-19 Fading
A slightly interesting board. Ambassador, but little in the way of engine, and also Hunting Party and Chapel. We both open with Ambassador, but I take a risk and grab Horse Traders, for it's reaction and psuedo-sifting. It pays off as they luckily don't collide, and I also get rid of two Estates turn 3 while his Ambassador misses the reshuffle, AND I have my Horse Trader in hand. The early luck causes my mostly money deck to accelerate away, and I take the win as a result.

Game 3 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-102020-5d6d6405.html): Fading 21-34 Tables
A strange game in that I think P2 had the advantage. The board was basically a BM board - no villages, Chapel, Embassy, Jack, and we opened 2/5. I think P2 has the advantage because grabbing Embassy seems so strong opening, but P1 doing so gives away a Silver on the 2nd shuffle. Well I go for Embassy/Chapel, get lucky AGAIN as they don't collide and the early trashing along with fast Embassy gets me to Gold and another Embassy quick, which manages to get away from Fading's Jack based deck.
In retrospect, I think neither of us should have opened Chapel here. I think I should have opened Pawn/Embassy, while player 1... I don't know how bad that Silver is, but I think maybe Cellar/Jack? I might actually ask about this in reports section...

Game 4 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-103054-cb43f0c0.html): Fading 27-35 Tables
An engine board, with three ($4) villages, Margrave, Haggler and... Coppersmith? We both go for the engine, although we build it in very different ways. I grab Margrave with my first $5, Fading grabs Haggler. Not sure which is actually better - Haggler DOES let you get villages with your $5's, but Margrave offers a buy, cycling and attack. Fading also grabs mostly Farming Villages, I mix between those and Worker's Villages. Fading also opened with Coppersmith, but I grab one much later. Fading grabs two Provinces (with Haggler Gold) relatively early, I don't green for a much longer time. The end result is, despite building very similar decks, two very different strategies. In the end, my deck manages a mega turn, grabbing 3 Provinces and 3 Gold (Haggler), and that's enough to keep it ticking over until the end.

Game 5 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-103430-cb379109.html): Fading 27-27 Tables (tie)
Man, Masquerade+BM isn't supposed to get 4 Provinces and a Duchy in 12 turns. It's definitely not supposed to do so for two players. I think Fading's opening was actually a little suspect... I don't think two Masqs is that good, and especially, I was tempted by Possession (but never bothered going for it) as a result. Maybe it's better than I'm guessing, but sim says otherwise (of course, we weren't simming mid game though...)

Game 6 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-103756-dce69e9e.html): Fading 26-27 Tables
Ironworks, Silk Road, Island. This was quite the interesting one, in a way. Obviously IW/SR is part of the strategy, but do you grab Islands as well? When? How many Ironworks? I grabbed two Ironworks, then rammed SRs, while Fading went for Islands first, and also grabbed 3 IWs. Well, as you can see, it was extremely close. I actually won partially because Fading accidentally grabbed the penultimate Estate. But I don't know what was in his next had, so, who can tell?

Thanks to Fading for being a great sport, and for the fun games.

He could have gotten a Duchy.

Thanks for those games!  All of them were very close, except for the second game where my masquerade/haggler/big money beat the scrying pool, and the fourth game where your mountebank beat my witches and you won cities 6/4.  They were all fun games!

gman314 4 - 3 RisingJaguar

Game 1: RisingJaguar
We both forgot to get the log, but this game had a straightforward set except for Black Market, which I didn't get and he did. He got some rather useful things from there, like Goons.

Game 2: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-173731-a6aed9c0.html  gman314 33 - 32 RisingJaguar
I passed on Conspirators because of the lack of extra buys. I don't think my strategy was by any means optimal, but it squeaked out the win on the 3-pile.

Game 3: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-174802-3136fcd0.html RisingJaguar 91 - 13 gman314
Scrying Pool and Vineyard dominated this set. I really don't know why I lost so badly here, but I did.

Game 4: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-175739-a1d92f78.html gman314 37 - 29 RisingJaguar
I went for a fairly straightforward Apprentice - Hoard approach with an early Ghost Ship to slow him down. He went for more of an engine which took a bit of time to get going.

Game 5: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-180750-adcda070.html gman314 59 - 43 RisingJaguar
This set was dominated by Mountebank and Goons with Trading Post and Caravan as counters for each. I think what did it for me here was being the first to Goons as well as an early lucky block of Mountebank.

Game 6: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-181523-a21a2d18.html RisingJaguar 36 - 18 gman314
On this set, I ignored Young Witch, thinking that I could use Baron to get an early Forge and then have some powerful Menageries in every hand. It did not work at all and in retrospect was probably a pretty terrible idea.

Game 7: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/13/game-20121213-182616-4f391621.html gman314 87 - 60 RisingJaguar
Another board where he went engine and I went with a bit less complicated approach. We both opened with Steward, but while I went into a big money deck with a bit of support from Swindler, Haggler and Warehouse, he went into an engine which again took a while to set up.

All in all, some good games, against I'm pretty sure the highest ranked opponent I've played. Our different approaches were very evident, with me almost always taking more of a BM approach.

It's been awhile since i've played serious games!

I just felt really compelled to build engines and a lot of them just didn't work, and I paid for it :( I don't really have much explanation for any of the games except for number 2, which I was pretty surprised he managed to get province + 2 ironworks in a turn.  Good luck in the rest of the games :)

Round 2 Results: scryordie (50) vs. bjmartin

50 4 - 1 bjmartin

To be honest, these games were not the most interesting. Luck played a pretty substantial factor, and many of the games were slogs with cursers in play.

Game 1: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-170804-d90940df.html) scryordie 32 - bjmartin 21

We both open into a Big Money supported by Jack of All Trades and Courtyard. I am able to get a Gold on Turn 3, which gives me a lead bjmartin can't overcome. By circumstance, I go Double Courtyard Jack, while my opponent went for Double Jack Courtyard. This game reminded how much I usually underrate Courtyard.

Game 2: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-171559-9dde753f.html) scryordie 5 - bjmartin -3

We both go for a Universtiy supported Torturer rush. I don't know where this game went wrong for bjmartin. I imagine I just got the first big Torturer turn first, and from there I built up my deck more and more while bjmartin's was flooded with Curses. I end it in a pretty cute fashion by gaining the last couple Curses from my opponent's Torturer.

Game 3: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-172555-5a0286a9.html) scryordie 17 - bjmartin 36

To be honest, this game made me pretty frustrated. I open Potion/Warehouse and aim to run a University/Margrave/Throne Room/Trade Route in a game featuring many different Victory cards. My opponent opens Silver/Island and goes for a Big Money Margrave style game. The first time where I get a University and a Margrave in the same hand is Turn 16. I feel that was pretty unlucky.

Game 4: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-173404-779a3942.html) scryordie 41 - bjmartin 36

I am pretty frustrated because of the last game, and I make several play mistakes. Unfortunately for my opponent, luck is back on my side. I manage to get a Witch in my second shuffle, while my opponent stalls at $4. From here, I have a clear edge, and despite some Witch collisions I am able to get enough Provinces and Duchies to overcome bjmartin's aggressive Duchy/Duke.

Game 5: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-174037-497c145f.html) scryordie 58 - bjmartin 36

We both get the 5/2 and open with the Mountebank. The curse war starts and we both get a second Mountebank and a Gold. Our strategies diverge in the midgame. My opponent goes for Island for the deck thinning, whereas I opt for Farming Villages to counter his Ghost Ship and go through the Curses filling my deck. Aided by Golds and Farming Villages, my deck is able to survive the end game greening.

Thanks for the games bjmartin. Too bad that most of the games were pretty uninteresting, but you were certainly a fun opponent!

mod edit: changed name of opponent to correct name

*****Round 2 Results*****
shark_bait defeats Xenoman 4-1-0

Game 1 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/15/game-20121215-072236-e590924a.html)

Key Cards - Walled Village, Torturer, Nobles, Masquerade, Upgrade

This was a really fun set to play.  It had all the makings of a Torturer slog-fest with some of the best counters.  The main difference between my opponent and myself was that I focused solely on getting the Torturer chain running by purchasing Walled Village/Torturer.  I also threw in an Upgrade after my first 2 Torturers.  Xenoman decided to pick up a Baron with one of his early 4's and that was the difference.  His Torturer chain took a bit longer to get up and running and I am able to affect his deck before the Curses run.  I picked up a couple of insurance Provinces and then worked on 3-piling.

shark_bait win 26 to 8

Game 2 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/15/game-20121215-074148-46abedd2.html)

Key Cards - Spice Merchant, Ambassador, Native Village, Margrave, Grand Market, Possession

If there is a lesson to be learned from this game, it is never give up.  I make the mistake of going Haggler on my first $5 instead of Margrave.  I then proceed to lose the Ambassador war.  Xenoman is picking up Grand Markets left and right and starts whittling down the Provinces.  At that point I was so close to just resigning but I decided to play it out and hope for a Miracle.  I slowly claw my way through my junk and pick up a Grand Market of my own.  I then hit the jackpot and got my first Possession.  The turning point was on turn 18 shown below.  I manage to put 2 Provinces back into the supply and purchase 2 of them with his turn for 5 Province swing!

Code: [Select]
Xenoman plays an Ambassador.
... Xenoman reveals a Province.
... returning 2 copies to the supply.
... shark_bait gains a Province.
Xenoman plays a Gold.
Xenoman buys a Province.

... ... shark_bait gains the Grand Market.
... shark_bait gains the Province.
Xenoman buys a Province.
... gaining a Margrave.
... ... shark_bait gains the Margrave.

shark_bait wins 39 to 24

Game 3 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/15/game-20121215-075200-86709d49.html)

Key Cards - Ghost Ship, Wishing Well, Oasis

We might have a record with this game.  In a game which ends on Provinces and no curses being given, the first Province was not bought until Turn 20!  This game was just a pure Ghost Ship slog in which the Supply pile was emptied.  I used Wishing Well to effectively counter his ships while he went for Oasis.  I think that is the big difference between our decks.  There is one very important thing about this match that I want to bring up.  When do you buy an Estate with 4 Provinces left in the supply when Ghost Ships are being played pretty much every turn?  You buy that Estate when there is no plus buy and you are at the start of your deck and you want that tiebreaking VP.  On Turn 26 I picked up an Estate which allowed me to finagle a narrow victory.

shark_bait wins 28 to 27

Game 4 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/15/game-20121215-080558-602ae50f.html)

Key Cards - Scrying Pool, Goons, Upgrade, Throne Room, Oasis

I get completely shellacked in this game.  Both of us had a similar plan but a combination of good draws as well as better play came out on top.  With identical start and a 5/2.  Both of us get an Upgrade.  Though we have the same deck, Xenoman gets a 2nd upgrade on our second pass through our deck.  When I finally get above $5, I panic and instead of going Upgrade, get a Goons.  Xenoman's more sleak deck easily cruises to victory and I am left in the dust.

Xenoman wins 68 to 1

Game 5 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/15/game-20121215-081544-7ac727eb.html)

Key Cards - Ghost Ship, Menagerie, Black Market, Courtyard, Loan

Another game with Ghost Ship and thankfully for us, we've got a counter in Menagerie.  Both of us open Black Market because well, Sea Hag is in it.  Other goodies included JoaT, Chapel, Fishing Village, Governor (and a few others I can't remember).  We both play extremely similar strategies; Ghost Ship with $5, Gold with $6.  After our first or second Silver we both started grabbing Menagerie.  I am able to pick up JoaT and Fishing Village from the Black Market while Xenoman gets Governor/Nobles.  It's a pretty close game all throughout and his Governor scares me because he's got a lean deck due to Loan trashing with a fair amount of Gold.  He definitely had potential for a double Province Turn.  So when he plays his Governor trashing a Gold for Province, I ditch my JoaT for a Duchy ensuring a tie if he manages to double Province.  Shortly after that turn I am able to snag the last Province for the victory.

shark_bait wins 38 to 26

Thanks to Xenoman for a fun series!

I decline to play in veto mode and instead we opt for targeted bans.  We mutually agree to play with the following cards prohibited: Ill-Gotten Gains, Minion, Possession, Swindler, Tournament.

Game 1: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/15/game-20121215-180917-43824c35.html)  Obi

I have to pry my hand off black market.  I remarked during this game that BM is my biggest sucker card.  I have no doubt that if this were just a normal game I would have bought black market 100% and won like 25% of those very rewarding games.  Instead we both play pretty standard big money.  He opts for a gold/masq turns 3-4  against my margrave/silver.

Game 2: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/15/game-20121215-181830-239f87e7.html)  Obi

I use talisman to secure 7/3 villages into a bunch of grand markets.  Not without a few blunders though.

Game 3: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/15/game-20121215-183359-3a3229cc.html)  Obi

Black Market makes another appearance and I cant layoff this time, though he does.  It comes down to a very close finish.  I bought maybe the dumbest ambassador in the world!  Felt like I snuck this one out.

Game 4: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/15/game-20121215-184335-71c879ef.html) Nixon

I never really knew what I was doing here.  I had planned on moving into golems but then got it into my head I could outrace him.  Really goofy finish.  He deserved this one.

Game : (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/15/game-20121215-185607-fc831c67.html)  Nixon

A couple beautiful steward/nothing openings.  I didnt count very well in this game and kind of threw it away.  Though he played well and Im not sure I win either way.

Game 6: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/15/game-20121215-190449-f99ae0b4.html)  Obi

My potion/courtyard outpaces his seahag/silver.  He invested a lot to win the curse split, which he did 6/4 but I as able to capitalize in other areas in the meantime.

Good games Mr. Nixon.  You played well and I was legitimately worried after dropping two games.  I will have to play better if I hope to win this thing.

andwilk 4-1 zaubererer

We played in veto mode, point tracker off, all players get identical starting hands.

Game 1: zaubererer 25-29 andwilk (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-085726-9e3962cd.html)
This was my comeback special of the set.  We both open with an Ironworks (our choice of first treasure is different, I choose Silver to his Fool's Gold) to get the Great Halls off the board.  My IW falls to turn 5 and I start to fall behind.  We split GHs, but I lose the Fool's Gold split 8-2 (admittedly I just gave up on them).  Now that two piles are gone, he starts to piledrive the Duchies in an attempt to pile out the game.  If I join in, I will lose so my only chance is to build a Walled Village/Rabble engine and build up to Colonies.  This is successful, as my last two turns result in Colonies and I eke out the comeback win.

Game 2: zaubererer 67-69 andwilk (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-090739-4ade509d.html)
A Minion race with Colonies.  I feel it is very important to reach $5 here so I open a $5-friendly Mining Village/Silver to his Bishop/Courtyard.  I don't invest in a Bishop and just allow it to thin my deck and ignore the VPs it is giving him figuring in a Colony game they won't matter as much.  I win the Minion split 6-4 and actually have a much thinner deck due to his investment into Tunnels which gained him quite a few Golds.  In the end, he miscounted points and bought the penultimate Colony, which allowed me to grab the final Colony for another close win.

Game 3: zaubererer 18-44 andwilk (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-091706-2df8c22f.html)
KC/Hunting Party/Horn of Plenty Megaturn game.  We are building toward the same goal here and I feel that I am going to run out of time due to his first turn advantage, however, his last turn ends up being a suboptimal draw and allows me to pop the megaturn first.  I'll chalk this one up to luck.

Game 4: zaubererer 46-34 andwilk (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-092853-bfeddd04.html)
I learn a harsh lesson on the diminishing returns of Apothecaries.  Using them and some virtual money (Vault/Salvager), I thought I would hum along nicely.  However, I overinvest in Apothecaries (I buy 8 of them) and my economy isn't what I thought it would be.  His more straightforward Big Money deck outlasts mine in the end.

Game 5: andwilk 27-24 zaubererer (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-093547-f24ba147.html)
A Vineyard game where my Highways make the difference in gathering more action cards (I buy 18 to his 15).  I was probably a little lucky to split the Vineyards since he invested in Potion first and was ahead in the count until I bought the final one to even it up.

Overall, an awesome and very enjoyable series.  Each game was very interesting, we both got to play with our preferred settings and lots of fun decisions within each game.  Thanks for the match zaubererer!  I'm sure we'll be seeing each other on automatch soon.

Round 2 : gamesou beats Buggy 4-1-2 after some thrilling games

GAME 1 : gamesou 40 - Buggy 38

This game was thrilling, Buggy was ahead for a long time, but I pulled a tournament out of the Black Market deck, and the two curses given by Followers made the difference since we ultimately had the same share of victory cards.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-091549-de3cd3f8.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-091549-de3cd3f8.html)

GAME 2 : gamesou 40 - Buggy 29

Watchtower/Mountebank/Colonies. A strange game were I embargo Golds early, and buy Caches instead. Still I don't understand why I won so easily (luck ?)
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-092829-5bccae77.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-092829-5bccae77.html)

GAME 3 : gamesou 28 = Buggy 28

A Chapel board with Vault/Tunnel (and also Treasure Map, which is probably weaker). A mirror match that ends
on a draw.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-093541-4fcbbcc9.html

GAME 4 : gamesou 32 - Buggy 22

The game I'm most proud of. With Chapel and Alchemist, I skip Sea Hag while Buggy doesn't. I could build a moneyless deck with Throne Room and two Barons that buys 2 Provinces a turn.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-094814-5a43ce79.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-094814-5a43ce79.html)

GAME 5 : gamesou 35 - Buggy 41

With IGG and Sea Hag, we thought that Develops would be nice to tranform one into the other. But I probably invested too early into Develops.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-100006-66980dd3.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-100006-66980dd3.html)

GAME 6 : gamesou 18 - Buggy 19

A Fool's Gold rush, with Workshop helping while defending against Young Witch, and later spamming Islands. Buggy get the only Province. I definitely should have bought Estate instead of Hamlet on turn 13.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-100613-f604497e.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-100613-f604497e.html)

GAME 7 : gamesou 40 - Buggy 32

A mess with Swindler, Apothecary, Golem, Remodel, Highway. My swindlers change twice Potion into Remodel, but Remdel was quite useful actually. I don't really understand how I could win that one
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-103117-96b14000.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-103117-96b14000.html)

Thanks to Buggy for these games !

GGs, glad we finally got a time together :).

Did not realize how much that HP would help the single amb as you hit me turn 4-9, while I didn't see it until 7, and then yeah...

oh so close to pulling off the triple province governor turn on game 4, but alas. My strategy that last game was just a muddled mess though. Gl

So after 5 close games andwilk defeated me and showed me that i am not ready yet to enter the group of lvl 40+ players. All games were intresting (i think because we played with veto mode on so we vetoed all the curse giving cards).
game 1 25-29 andwilk wins http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-085726-9e3962cd.html  An intresting game in which we both opened with ironworks for great halls, while i bought fool's gold and he bought silver.I think that fool's gold was a better choice, because a combination of walled villages rables and 1 pawn would be unstopable.During, the game i was anxious and i wanted to end the game with a win as soon as posible.I saw he had a weaker deck so i thouth of buying all the dutchies. He needed 2 colonies to defeat me.(i counted wrong i thouth he needed more than that thinking that i had 2 more great halls and estates than him). This decision was a mistake and i lost a game i controlled from the start. He bought 2 colonies and a dutchy in 2 turns and defeated me.
game 2 67-69 andwilk wins http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-090739-4ade509d.html We both had a diferent strategy  on the game.He wanted to earn victory points from colonies, while i wanted to also use tunnels and bishops to trash these golds i would gain from his and my minions. Now that i see the game i think i should have bought more mining villages and bishops.i also did the mistake (again miscounted ) to buy a colony leaving the last one for andwilk.A strange game in which i dont know which strategy was better.
game 3 18-44 andwilk wins http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-091706-2df8c22f.html I made a horible mistake here.We were both able to draw nearly our whole deck and the horns of plentry were split 6-4.He had 1 province with 7 left, and as you can see from the logs i did play cellar with a huge hand but i chose not to discard any cards.I had 2 cellars in my hand and there were like 10 cards in my discard pile.If i had played my cellar(i always fear the resufle ) my next draw would be destroyed, but by drawing both my hop the provinces would be split 6-2 and i would probably win because i also had the money for a duthy.Again this mistake destroyed my better start.
game 4 46-34 i win http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-092853-bfeddd04.html When we started this match i knew everything was over.I couldnt win 4 games, playing second in the three of them. This was a much simplier game. He went for apothecaries, while i bought 3 salvagers(my favourite card) and a vault.I bought some early golds due to the vault, while he bought  8 apothecaries. At the end he had dificulties reaching 8 while i have been salvagering my cards to easily reach 8.
game 5 27-24 andwilk wins http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/16/game-20121216-093547-f24ba147.html Again i dont know who deserved to win. He bought more high cost cards like hightay and laboratory ,while i bought low cost cards and cards giving + buys and went straight for vineyards.they were splited 2-0 3-1 but at the end he had 4 of them(i bought two potions).I am not sure if i would win even if i had 5 vineyards, because he had more buying power. He could easily buy a province or 2 before i could end the game.I wasnt unlucky in this game but if i were lucky i would have won ( he won by 3 points and 4 vineyards and 18 action cards, with 1 less action card on his deck he would have lost).

All games were very intresting and andwilk is a good player. When the brackets were created i was lvl 35 and he was lvl 32.Now i am improved (lvl 37) but he is lvl 40. So it isnt an upset that i lost. The tournament was that great that i was anxious because i wanted to continue playing on it.Great organisation jonts and greatexpectations, and thank you for doing it. If only it could be done more than once per year, that would be great(but i suppose this was the last one).It is great that we have a second chance at the rats division. Its somethink like europa league,it ofters a new goal to achieve , to win this tournament.Andwilk good luck in the rest tournament.Defeat obi wan bonogi, show that i lost from a great oponnent.

easwaran 4-3 over yariv

We alternated wins until the last game, which turned out to be incredibly close, but I pulled ahead and stuck it out at one estate per turn before he was able to get another province.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-130734-4b1741ed.html

Close game.  He got more gold and I got more mountebanks.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-131559-31269c91.html

Odd quantity of noble brigands here.  He was ahead for much of the game, but my golems and cities eventually pulled ahead.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-131934-fe8c7e0a.html

Quick ironworks/silk road game, where I laid too much of my hope on familiar instead of ironworks.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-132812-650c0b29.html

I think this game was our biggest strategy difference.  I went all out on highways, aiming for the vineyards, while he went for province.  It was sort of risky for me, because horse traders was the only +buy, so I had to be careful not to discard my potions.

Actually, looking back on it, I now see that nomad camp was there!  I somehow misread that as noble brigands, so I didn't go for it, but it would have made my strategy much easier.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-133523-97683549.html

Margrave/village/bridge - he started pulling ahead in villages and margraves at some point, and got the big turn before me.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-134205-9fcc6710.html

I was hoping my militia would inhibit his ambassador, but it looks like I just got lucky and pulled ahead in ambassador first even without that.  Then the tournaments and provinces started kicking in - I probably should have been able to do the ending faster with the amount of luck that I had.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-135036-63a30250.html

Crazy game - I intended to go for embassy and province, while he seemed to be aiming at duke/duchy, but I ended up winning the duchies and never actually got a province.  Embassy was definitely not as great at duke/duchy or piling out the estates, but I got lucky enough to pull it out.

Fun games all around!

Match report for Tables (24th) vs. gamesou (9th)
Match result: Tables 1-4 gamesou

By request, we play without identical starting hands (but I think we had the same split in every game anyway, although not the same order)

Game 1 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-130525-3ac610d4.html): Tables 36-86 gamesou
A game with an engine I didn't think would work (which along with engines I didn't expect to work, ends up being a common theme here). Both of us manage to (almost or totally) piledrive a pile here - for me, it's Hunting Parties with Horse Traders, for him, it's Highways. He uses Tacticians with Highways, a Trade Route for trashing, and Horse Traders for +buy, and promptly puts me in my place.

Game 2 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-131241-e85bb285.html): Tables 44-32 gamesou
Mountebank game where we both open Silver/Silver, he gets $4/$4 on the second shuffle and buys his first Mountebank for $7, while I get $5 on turn 4, then $6/$5 and grab a Gold and another Mountebank. Despite this I do actually lose the curse split, but it was clear who was going to win right from those early turns. Gamesou almost managed to bring it back around with 6 point Fairgrounds, but narrowly misses them.

Game 3 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-133116-e091f2fb.html): gamesou 72-38 Tables
A case of 'I didn't spot the engine'. Which is a surprise, because I'm normally dead hot on double Tac engines. He does double tac with Vault and Secret Chamber, plus Cutpurse and other components. I do big money with Menagerie, pretty much. I played this totally wrong, gamesou played it totally right.

This game got more and more hilarious as things went on, though. As if beating me with a better engine was fun enough for gamesou, he decided to rub it in by having his cutpurse kill my first Platinum hand ($9 exactly), and then as I was ready to start greening, hit my hands with exactly $11 three times. In a row. (Turns 12-14).

Game 4 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-134749-ca86dc31.html): Tables 29-40 gamesou
To be honest, this one still surprises me. I had NOT expected Alchemists to work here, yet clearly they did, and extremely well. My deck started with a purpose, but quickly went awry as I tried to build some kind of hybrid Conspirator/Big Money deck (you should be shouting at your monitor by this point). I think part of my problem was I kept thinking I could do something upgrade wise with Border Villages... I think I might have been tired while playing these games... But unsurprisingly it doesn't work, and I lose.
I actually resigned in this game, when I was 11 points behind and there was 1 Province and 7 Estates to buy, as there was no way I was going to actually get 6 Estates+Province before gamesou got 3 Estates.
Anyway this is the only game where I actually tried anything resembling an engine and it's probably one of only two games where a BM approach might have worked. Brilliant.

Game 5 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-140138-a4155947.html): Tables 41-46 gamesou
I almost one this one! Governor and Ambassador were the key cards here. I only grabbed one Ambassador, thinking getting rid of junk wasn't going to be that important in the fast Governor game, and similarly passed up University on the same grounds. Well, I was... half right. I ended up grabbing an extra Ambassador or two, not because I needed a lean deck, but because I needed to throw the curses back from his wad of Ambassadors. The game ended on a turn when I could have gotten three Provinces myself, but alas, it was not to be, and gamesou took a well deserved victory.

Congrats to gamesou for his decisive victory and clever engines, and while I don't think I was at my best (far from it, actually), I doubt I'd have won even if I were. May we meet again for more games.

We agree to play under Constraint(s) used: prohibited: Familiar, Ill-Gotten Gains, Possession, Sea Hag, Swindler, Tournament.  All players get identical starting hands.  The point tracker will be available.

Game 1 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-171657-895159df.html):  His lighthouses collided early and I was able to edge out 6/4 in curses.  A single grand market a long with some good inn opportunities proved to be enough for 5 provinces.  In other news I am bad at Gardens, always have been.

Game 2 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-172416-8a043201.html): We both opt not to open with a Fool's Gold along with our Mountebank.  We continue the mirror for a while both amassing hunting parties until I diverge getting bridge and potion.  I can't resist getting the first scrying pool but ultimately wanted to get some pstones.  The buys from bridge were enough to push me over.

Game 3 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-173914-f7a1ecd6.html): He out-minions me.  I seem to mix my strategy midgame but really just felt like I was buying a lot of good cards and seeing what happened.  While he sticks to a streamline strategy that was very effective.

Game 4 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-174633-066f46c6.html):  I never get 3 smugglers.  But the one time I do, here, I really thought I would win.  Alas, in the end we draw.

Game 5 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-175527-afc8eae1.html):  Confirming reports coming in, I am bad at Gardens.

Game 6 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-180244-cd7614b7.html):  He tries to sneak past a witch which proved ill-fated as he is unable to get his money ramped up.  Also, here is a play you don't see often:
Turn 11...
Obi Wan Bonogi buys a Copper.
... revealing a Watchtower.
... putting the Copper on the deck.

Game 7 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-181049-4f0d0f23.html):  Still bad at Gardens.  I made some questionable plays but I think the 6/4 curse split hurt me more than anything.  He finished me off well.

Game 8 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-181452-ef0f8827.html):  I was worried about losing this game before I saw the board and seeing it didn't help my confidence.  I'd been playing several games in the series out of my comfort zone and looking at this board I felt it wasn't catered to my strengths at all.  I've heard of this thing called double jack so I gave that a shot.  The main divergence was my 2nd shanty and 2nd jack into council rooms vs his money and stables.  Seems like once he fell behind no +buys really kept him from catching up.

Obi Wan Bonogi defeats andwilk 4-3

Well played series to my opponent.

ednever over shraeye 4-1

I almost felt bad winning this. Shraeye was the highest seeded player left in the tournament. He had two great upsets in the first two rounds. Here's how this one played out:

Game 1: University/Torturer
I pick up a Village instead of a Silver on the open. It helps me get my Torturer chains going faster, but I can't produce the money I need to buy green. I end up losing on piles. I'm already worried how this series will play out.

Shraeye wins
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-182601-d2ce3c68.html

Game 2: Ironworks/Island/Crossroads
At least that's how I played it. Shraeye went with more standard BM+Jester. It's a close call. Both of us invest likely too much into treasure before moving to green (due to a few $7 hands). And then I get ahead after Shraeye draws $7 a few too many times. He makes the right call and breaks PPR. Then I can only buy an Estate. He buys a Duchy. I end it with the last province.

ednever wins
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-183453-a74af338.html

Game 3: Fun kingdom with everything - Caravan, Witch, Fishing Village, Vineyards, Apprentice, Hamlet, Grand Market, etc. - it all came into play!
I overloaded Witches thinking I could Apprentice them later. Shraeye goes for more money to pick up early Grand Markets. I figure I want as many actions as possible as I'm planning to ignore Provinces and go Vineyards in the end. Things are looking up until I realize all the Caravans are gone, all the curses are gone, and Shraeye just bought 2 of the last 4 Fishing Villages - and he's a fair bit ahead on VP.
I can only pick up a Duchy, but not enough to stop him from ending it with $6 and 2 buys.
He draws $5 and 2 buys. I stay alive and pick up a Vineyard, a Province and a Duchy. Now it's just a matter of time.

ednever wins
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-184820-439a5b0e.html

Game 4: Gardens/Silk Roads (with Cahce/Baron/Smugglers support)
I pick up Smugglers and he doesn't. I go into green a turn or two before him. It's all over.
It was Shraeye's second ever Silk Roads rush. Not bad at all!

ednever wins
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-185521-b479c401.html

Game 5: Ambassador/Quarry with transition into Market/King's Court
I pick up two Ambassadors. He doesn't. His only other real mistake was playing Torturer when I had a deck that could draw itself and King's Courted Ambassadors.
Challenge was picking up enough stuff that guaranteed me a King's Court chain without letting him end it on a lucky pile-out (Quarries plus Markets can do that. See my last turn - something like 20+ buys and all the action cards were free...)

ednever wins
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/19/game-20121219-191216-b0898f18.html

I took it 4/1, but it could have easily been a nail-biter. I was $1 away from losing games 2 and 3. I made some bad decisions those games and just got lucky it didn't take me out.

Well played shraeye! And welcome to the world of Dominion tournaments!

Just a few comments from my series with Obi Wan Bonogi.

Cursers and Gardens ruled the day as a either Mountebank or Witch showed up in 5 of the 8 games and Gardens in 3 of them.  This made for a messy series and not a lot of chances to delve into engine building.

Game 1:  I get behind from the start on the curses and try to go Gardens to catch up seeing it as my only chance for victory but it wasn't enough.

Game 2:  I was a little surprised that I lost this one.  In my experience, usually Hunting Party+X/BM (here, X is Mountebank) will outrace anything that tries to deviate and get a little fancy so I stick to that blueprint but it doesn't work out.

Game 3:  An engine-type game based around Minions.  I see that as the key card and out-gain them 6-2.

Game 4:  Ick... Smugglers.  And it was a good game for it as Obi Wan invests in 3 of them.  I completely miss the Highway/Smugglers combo which results in a 3-province turn for him on turn 15.  Luckily, I am able to force the draw.

Game 5:  This was my shining star of the set.  It's a Colony game, but Mountebank is on the board along with Gardens and Hoard.  I figure Gardens would be my best shot here so I get a Mountebank first, then a few Hoards and head straight into Gardens.  His Mountebank fed me quite a few Coppers throughout the game and I ended up with 7-point Gardens by the end.

Game 6:  I follow up my best game with this stinker.  I try to get cute and dance around Witch with Masquerade and Wharf.  I proceed to get destroyed.  Note to self: you can't avoid Witch.

Game 7:  Ho-hum another Curser/Gardens game.  He gets the first Goons but I win the curse split and that ended up being more important.

Game 8:  When the board appeared and saw it was basically a Big Money game with JoaT out there, I knew I would need to get the draws to win this one as we mirror open with Shanty Town/JoaT.  He gets the superior turn 3/4 and it was pretty much downhill from there.  He gets the first two Provinces and picks up +buy from Council Room and I can't catch up.

Good series, although not the most enjoyable boards for either of us.

Sorry paddy-
I meant to make a reference to Shark Bait and me playing in the semi-finals in Detroit - with Scout as a key card. No offense intended. I hope you kick that little fishy's bum. (Or whatever the shark equivalent is of bum...)

Seriously, I am excited to play either one of you. And everyone else left in the tournament. The quality of players after three rounds is looking a little ridiculous...

I've got to say, I'm loving all the friendly trash talk that is going on in regards to myself and paddy.  It's nice to know that we can competitive, polite and little edgy all at the same time!

@ed, sharks don't have bums so paddy will have nothing to kick.

No worries, ed!  I'm totally down with the trash talk.  ;D ;D ;D (even if it was unintentional or a miscommunication)

And as for shark_bait, well... it's good that he gets these moments in the limelight.  You know: build up his ego.  Bigger they come harder they fall kinda stuff.

Besides, ed, I started the back and forth with you with my intense disappointment at the talk of your Round 2 bye! Drab Emordnilap over Turambar, 4-2-1

We played without veto mode, with official point tracker. Turambar preferred no identical starting hands, and I ceded to him.

cards in supply: Caravan, Embargo, Golem, Ironworks, Moneylender, Potion, Salvager, Scout, Sea Hag, Trader, and Treasure Map (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/21/game-20121221-025817-c2068971.html)

Different starting hands hurts Turambar off the bat, as he opens 5/2 on a board with no 5s. We both get a Sea Hag; he gets a Salvager where I get a Trader. I think Trader is awesome on slogs like these with no strong 5s, because when you draw $5 + Trader, you can get 3 Silver instead of one. He Embargoes the Golems, which means I can't buy the Embargoed card with Trader in hand.  :( I buy Silver on $4 where he buys Caravan; I think that's the big turning point here. With him with 2 Caravans in play and just having shuffled his Salvager back in, I take the draw when I can get it.

Drab Emordnilap 25 -- 25 Turambar

cards in supply: Alchemist, Coppersmith, Familiar, Fishing Village, Haven, Hoard, Potion, Silk Road, Transmute, Venture, and Witch (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/21/game-20121221-030738-6df03610.html)

Another accursed slog, this time with Familiar and Witch. We both open Potion, but I hate $2P so much I open Haven to his Silver. He gets a Witch on turn 3 but $2P on turn 4. We each hit $2 a lot and end up with 5/5 Havens. I buy Alchemists and money, while Turambar gets Hoard and starts greening. I try to catch up with Silk Roads, but I don't have all my starting Estates thanks to Transmute. Down by 5 with two Provinces left, I break Penultimate Province because I can't catch up any other way. Turambar buys a 2 point Silk Road, except it's his 12th green card, and so it's 3 points +1 for his other Silk Road. I buy Duchy, he buys Silk Road, and I'm still down by 9 points. Piles are low, too; Curses and Havens are gone, and there's only one Silk Road left. With nothing left to do, I buy the last Province, to discover that that was MY 12th green card, and the extra 4 points put me ahead by a point!

Drab Emordnilap 43 -- 42 Turambar

cards in supply: Colony, Familiar, Farmland, Fortune Teller, Hoard, Hunting Party, Island, Pawn, Peddler, Platinum, Potion, Remake, and Stables (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/21/game-20121221-031809-9371eaeb.html)

I get a 5/2 on a Hunting Party board. He gets Familiar sooner as a result, but my turn 3 Remake kills most of the Curses (and all my Estates/Coppers by the end of the game). I like Pawn a lot, and I use it a lot of ways this game, but the +buy was critical, especially for Peddler. I get to Remake peddler and Province into Platina, and I get a couple double Colony turns thanks to all the money and Hunting Parties.

Drab Emordnilap 68 -- 27 Turambar

cards in supply: Embargo, Expand, Explorer, Fairgrounds, Festival, Fishing Village, Haggler, Moneylender, Nobles, and Witch (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/21/game-20121221-032312-b5e4ba74.html)

He gets a Witch on turn 4 and a Nobles on turn 5, while I open $3/$4/$4/$4. I buy a second Moneylender to try and cycle faster, but my terminals collide too much, even with Fishing Village, and I get buried under the Curses.

Drab Emordnilap 2 -- 21 Turambar

cards in supply: Black Market, Cartographer, Chapel, Crossroads, Farming Village, Haggler, Potion, Remodel, Royal Seal, Stash, and University (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/21/game-20121221-032828-c0a7c7cf.html)

I probably took two or three minutes on my first turn, trying to figure out what to do with this board. The Black Market had some terminal draw (Council Room, Rabble, Torturer) but no cursers, and no King's Court/Goons/Tournament. We both end up playing kinds of Chapel Big Money, and I feel like weaker Big Money boards are a strength of mine. Royal Seal and Haggler do good work.

Drab Emordnilap 34 -- 27 Turambar

Ambassador, Baron, Colony, Coppersmith, Expand, Familiar, King's Court, Masquerade, Menagerie, Platinum, Potion, Torturer, and Vault (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/21/game-20121221-034623-c5384e24.html)

Man, I knew I was in trouble looking as this kingdom; crazy King's Court stuff is not a strength of mine at all, and then I open 5/2. I have no clue what I should do here, and durdle around with King's Court until I get destroyed. If anyone has a good idea of what I should have done here, please share.

Drab Emordnilap 0 -- 38 Turambar

Ambassador, Bridge, Cartographer, Colony, Fishing Village, Hunting Party, Platinum, Salvager, Trade Route, Treasury, Vault, and Watchtower (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/21/game-20121221-035304-52588f03.html)

Now this, THIS is an engine I can do. Turambar gets hit with the 5/2 again (that's 4 games where the different opening hands were significant, one way or the other), and I get Ambassador/Fishing Village/Ambassador, and clear out all my starting cards while loading up on FV and Bridges. Hunting Party and Watchtower let me draw most of my deck each turn, and I load up on engine pieces until I can 3 pile. The key here was the only village, Fishing Village; no matter what, you're going to need to win that split on this kingdom.

Drab Emordnilap 36 -- 2 Turambar

Good games to Turambar.

EDIT: Man, I have to beat Obi to get to you guys? ._.

If he Embargoed, say, Gold, then I could buy Gold with Trader in hand, and gain Silver instead of Curse. However, I didn't plan on ever buying a Potion, so I could never buy an Embargoed card for the free Silvers.

Maybe it's just me not being a native speaker but your statement sounded like something prevented you from buying the embargoed card although you wanted that card (and getting the silvers as a bonus).

Well, the something was my lack of Potions. Any other card, I could just buy when I got my Trader in hand, but Golem, I would have to buy a Potion, then hope my Potion and Trader hit each other.

Yep congratulations to Eliegel. I'm happy to let the first two games go since I did get bad draws and Eliegel did finish them off well. The third game was governors and smugglers and stuff and I don't really understand governors well enough to ruthlessly close out a close game. I'd taken a hamlet that gave me an extra buy but I could never quite harness the deck to both trash border villages and use the extra buy. For the fourth game I think my opponent made the better opening with the swindler and deserves the series.

shark_bait and I are in the middle of our set, but he's having massive internet problems.

=========================
In the first game, he and I both get scrying pools and a single possession, but he figures out that he needs to cripple his deck before I figure out that I need to cripple mine.
=========================

=========================
In the second game, University was causing a 3 pile.  But he was going SLOW, I was up by a point, and he said that I would win if he got booted.  About 45 minutes into the game, it booted him.

However, in the lobby I asked him what his hand was, since there was only 1 estate left.  His answer indicated that he would have been able to win the game with any but extremely bad luck.  I have had no reason not to trust him, so I conceded that game to him.  No fun in winning on a technicality.
=========================

So, we're currently at 2-0 and we'll try to finish the set tomorrow.

KUDOS TO PADDY FOR SHOWING TRUE SPORTSMANSHIP!

This was probably the most frustrating night of dominion ever.  I played around 6 games earlier and everything was fine and of course once I start the tourney games isotropic just dies on me.  I had to keep hitting refresh to get the game to go and of course it only lets you do this so many times before it autodisconnects you.  It didn't help in the second game that there was tons of clicking and it seemed like more clicking meant more problems.

Game 1 Comments - This one was a Chapel/Possession game with Scrying Pool.  The interesting feature was that there was no +Buy or no +Action.  So each of us could only play a single action a turn.  I trash all my non Scrying Pool/Possession cards sooner than paddy and am able to buy provinces before him as I can use his Fortune Teller to get up to $8 (he had been buying Peddlers).  I accrue a lead and by the time he trashes down, it's pretty much over.  With no +buy the only way he can win is if I get really really unlucky.

Game 2 Comments - This was a University fueled engine with Great Hall, Cartographer, Bishop, Swindler and some other stuff.  I get a Masquerade while he doesn't.  The interesting thing is that the only $5 cost cards are Cartographer and Duchy.  So once the Cartographers emptied, playing swindler is dangerous for giving away points.  Especially in a game destined to end on piles.  I have a few more Cartographers than paddy and go through my deck a little bit more consistently.  I was able to gain Bishops with my Universities and get to them ASAP with my fast cycling.  That allowed me to make up the deficit of giving a few free Duchies.  This game finished with me DCing but paddy graciously gave me the win when I told him my hand and knowing that I only needed the last Estate and a Bishop point to win.  Now that CR's back up I'll upload the game logs and this 2nd game should show that I drew adequate buying power on my last hand to secure the win.

If you guys ever see paddy online, seriously play with this guy.  He is one of the most respectful and fun opponents I have played with.  I'm looking forward to continuing our series tomorrow (technically this) morning with hopefully a more reliable internet connection.

Game 3 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/23/game-20121223-054001-0e2b2ea4.html)

Key Cards - Garden, Silk Road, Island, Noble Brigand, Tribute

This was was an alt-VP game if there ever was one.  As I started the game, I couldn't help but think of this thread (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=5810.0).  Because I decided to open with Village.  The reasoning was that Noble Brigand was available and I wanted all of his treasure without giving him the chance to steal mine.  We diverge in the opening of Island/Silver for him and Village/Noble Brigand for me.  He buys a 2nd Silver and sooner rather than later, I've got all of his 2 Silver.  He detours for a total of 3 Islands and a Tribute allowing me to win the SR split 5-3.  At that point I knew that I just needed to extend the game long enough to overcome his 6 VP lead from Islands.  I really should count better because I lost track of exactly how many VP cards I had and took a gamble on the last turn that my Garden purchase would get me to a new SR level.  It paid off and Game 3 ended in a narrow victory.

Even good players make mistakes.

Notice that I play my Noble Brigand resulting in $5 total purchasing power and then buy a SR for $4.  Also look what I gave.  My Noble Brigand gave my opponent a copper.  There were other instances in this game where I made the correct play of NOT playing my Noble Brigand, but in this case I went on autopilot and played it when I shouldn't.  It should be noted that at this point in the game I had all of his Silver.

Game 4 (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/23/game-20121223-054455-d1f60e20.html)

Key Cards - Warehouse, Mountebank, Treasury

We both open the same with Warehouse/Silver going for a bit of purchasing power and cycling to try and get to those Mountebanks as fast as possible.  The main difference in this game is that I stuck with a single Mountebank opting to get Golds whereas paddy got a 2nd and 3rd Mountebank on turns 6 and 10 with $7 in play.  I pick up a couple of Treasuries in the mid-game hoping that the top decking can increase my chance for Province.  He wins the Curse split 6/4 but at that point I had a slim lead and with no +Buy he violates the PPR which results in a victory for me in the next turn.

Thanks to paddy for being a gracious opponent and sorry that Games 1 and 2 took so long.

For those who are interested, here are Games 1 and 2 of my series with paddy.

Game 1 (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20121222-202110-9bd79eeb.html)

Neither of us played this one optimally.  IMO, the correct way to play this would be to use use Chapel for trashing and obtain a single possession.  It is also imperative to obtain Scrying Pools.  Then only use your opponents deck to green and don't allow them to possess your hand for anything worthwhile.  The winner would be the person who sets this up first.  I get an insurmountable lead because paddy doesn't trash right away and I steal 2 Province hands from his deck.  I'd imagine a game like this could result in a stalemate if both players got to the Scrying Pool/Possession deck at the same time.

Game 2 (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20121222-211042-8ba3a23e.html)

This was an interesting game and neither of us played it exceptionally well.  Masquerade is around which makes BM appealing.  It also provides defense against the Swindler.  Bishop is also present for a potential Golden Deck and University can gain things like Great Halls and Cartographers.  With identical start we both open potion planning for Universities.  I like this approach because University combined with Cartographer provides huge control over ending the game.  His Swindler hits Coppers on Turns 5 and 7 and I don't like the way things are looking.  My Masquerade on Turn 4 really helped turn the tide I think.  I was able to cycle a bit faster and get rid of a bit of junk.  That allowed me to gain a large advantage in the Cartographer pile.  And just when I was starting to feel in control of the game, I gift him 2 Duchies on Turns 12 and 13 with my Swindler.  Due to those, I was no longer in control of ending the game on my terms.  I got lucky that paddy couldn't end it while he had that lead.  I had just enough time to play some Bishops for VP points and paddy graciously gave me the win based on my last hand (I was down by a point with only 1 Estate left in the supply).

We agree to play identical hands with point tracker and prohibiting Black Market, Ill-gotten gains, Possession and Tournament.

Game 1(Apprentice, Cartographer, Duchess, Farming Village, Nobles, Royal Seal, Stables, Talisman, Trading Post, and Treasure Map) (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/28/game-20121228-130308-6578f175.html)
We both open silver/silver looking to get to the early trading post.  He buys golds which I think are a trap on this board.  There is no +buy and trading post will provide enough economy to buy provinces.

Game 2(Adventurer, Embargo, Familiar, Highway, Lookout, Navigator, Nobles, Pearl Diver, Potion, Tribute, and Vault) (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/28/game-20121228-131031-c20717fe.html)
My greedy lookout/potion vs. his embargo/potion.  Pretty even out of the gate but eventually his economy pulls out in front.  The Nobles buy on turn 12 along with the province buy turn 14 were probably mistakes on my part.

Game 3(Embassy, Expand, Festival, Fishing Village, Golem, Library, Merchant Ship, Potion, Quarry, Tribute, and University) (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/28/game-20121228-132130-e4073154.html)
A fun board featuring university with plenty of juicy 5s.  With the golem on board we both buy a second potion right away.  His first potion misses the shuffle, which was probably enough for me to pull ahead.  The extra embassys were solid as card draw with plenty of junk in the deck and the silvers given can clog up a library engine.

Game 4(Apprentice, Cache, Familiar, Horse Traders, Library, Lighthouse, Potion, Quarry, Thief, Trade Route, and Trading Post) (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/28/game-20121228-132647-86d40fe7.html)
Very different opens in his Horse Traders/Silver vs my Quarry/Lighthouse.  I went quarry because I wanted both trading post and at least one apprentice.  With the apprentice it could always be trashed later.   I kept my eye on getting a familiar if he didnt adequately protect with lighthouses and proved to help a lot mid game.

Game 5(Apothecary, Coppersmith, Fairgrounds, Festival, Philosopher's Stone, Potion, Quarry, Royal Seal, Saboteur, Vineyard, and Witch) (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/28/game-20121228-133738-acfe1720.html)
A pretty funky board.  I open potion/silver vs his silver/silver.  I went with an early apothecary but my plan all along was philo stone, though I doubt that I played it optimally.
I really thought I would win once curses finished in my favor.  However in the final shuffle I found all my philo stones buried, and then without +buys and in the end I felt fortunate to pull out the draw.

Game 6(Border Village, Caravan, Coppersmith, Harvest, Laboratory, Mine, Mining Village, Potion, Scout, Stash, and University) (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/28/game-20121228-134304-0c774e51.html)
Fourth consecutive potion game!  I open potion/silver vs his Caravan/silver.  I got an early mine and let that be most of my economy.  I didn't mind getting the potion with the presence of mine, though I imagine there is a good case against it.

Obi Wan Bonogi wins 4-1-1

Round 4 Results: scryordie (50) vs. gamesou

50 4 - 3 gamesou

A tight and intense series all the way through. I was glad because all the sets were interesting and there was relatively little luck involved.

Game 1: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/02/game-20130102-080512-a3baab74.html) scryordie 122 - gamesou - 55
An engine was clearly the optimal strategy here. We both got the 5/2 split and opened Haggler/Nothing. In the second cycle, I opted for Tactician/Bishop over Gold/Haggler. This helped accelerate my engine, and soon, with the aid of many bishops, I got my deck down into a very consistent Colony engine with a Haggler for Bishop fodder. Gamesou suffered from too many terminal early game, and was not able to pull himself back into it with Double Tactician + Mass Bishop.

Game 2: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/02/game-20130102-083738-ced26caf.html) scryordie 9 - gamesou -7

An interesting set with a ton of engine cards. We both open Steward/Quarry and snatch up 5 cost engine components. (Although gamesou favors trashing some more cards, while I pick up both a Mountebank and a Wharf). As the game develops, with both pick up Farming Villages and Throne Rooms. Gamesou upgrades his first Mountebank into a Gold, which I feel was a mistake. With Quarry, Throne Room, and Mountebank, money is simply not that important, and this allows me to get a decisive Curse split. I am able to get an insurance Province and end it on piles.

I feel the midgame Scrying Pool was a trap, as it was simply too slow in this volatile set.

Game 3: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/02/game-20130102-082913-097b3a89.html) scryordie  36 - gamesou 42

The board lacks a large engine and we both favor a Stables Big Money. I feel pretty confident with Smugglers as second seat, especially when I am able to get an early Stables. I have an edge going into the mid game, and gamesou goes for develop, which was a little slow in my opinion, but I fail to get enough money before diving into the Provinces. Some bad shuffle luck (Turns 10 and 15) where I have two Stables and no treasure to be found and 4 of my Stables clump together at the bottom of my deck.

Gamesou takes the lead, and through some nice use of develop is able to grab the estates necessary to guarantee a tie and able to close out the game on piles.

Game 4: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/02/game-20130102-081325-c109a397.html) scryordie 42 - gamesou 37

Going in, I am quite worried because this sizes up to be a Big Money game, and Militia can heavily favor the first seat. Gamesou opts to go Militia/Silver while I go Militia/Courtyard. I make some tough decisions about when to play the Militia vs. the Courtyard to deny gamesou $6 and $5, and it pays off, because I am able to get a massive Gold lead, while gamesou builds up with more Militia and Throne Rooms. I feel that Throne Room might not have been as great here as it may seem. Throne Rooming a Militia is not substantively different from playing a Militia and a Silver.

I buy the Penultimate Province (happily, because if we tie, I think I can take a different game that does not favor first seat quite as heavily). Fortunately for me, gamesou can only grab an Estate, and I take the last Province for the win.

Game 5: gamesou wins

I thought I grabbed the log for this game, but apparently not. Unfortunately, I totally forget what the set was and how the game ended. If gamesou still has the log, I will type up my thoughts and edit this post.

Game 6: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/02/game-20130102-090835-2216d94a.html) scryordie 12 - gamesou 26

An interesting game. Chapel/Possession calls out to both of us. I can think of no way to rush Greens quick enough to beat someone taking 2-3 times as many turns. I opt for Spice Merchant/Chapel while gamesou goes for Silver/Chapel. With some bad luck on turn 5, I don't get the second play of the Chapel (despite a two thirds chance) which slows me down and costs me first seat advantage. Gamesou keeps his deck more focused and doesn't make my mistake of undervaluing the starting Copper. He is able to get the first Possession and the third Possession. Suddenly, I am in a deep hole. We both trash most of our decks with Chapels, and the long drawn out bleeding begins.

Menageries are the first to empty as we both alternate taking 2 or 3 turns in a very poor economic situation. I know I have to make my move as the pawns begin to go. I get a Province with gamesou's deck, but he follows suit and starts picking up Duchies with mine. I then transition into trying to get a second Possession, but by the time I due, gamesou has filled his deck with a glut of green and is able to close out piles for the win.

Very nicely and patiently played by gamesou. If someone can think of a way out of my bind, please post, I'd be interested to know!

In any case, the series goes on to the decisive seventh game.

Game 7: (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/02/game-20130102-092059-eace665b.html) scryordie 18 - gamesou 13

Once again, Possession shows itself in a game with powerful trashing (Steward) and mediocre card draw. I opt for the risky Steward/Steward opening while gamesou goes Steward/Potion. I hope to go for the Possessions with a thin deck once again. gamesou also favors Alchemy, but throws in some Universities to pick up Caravans and Festivals.

I am able to successfully thin my deck and grab a Possession on Turn 10. I steal a Possession turn from gamesou, and things look good. My deck gets into gear as I grab a second Possession. Gamesou begins to ruin his deck by grabbing Estates to fend off my Possession. Three piles are becoming dangerously close to running.

I see that gamesou is no longer planning to go into the Possession war with me, and I make a mad grab at all the power cards I can. I grab Universities, the remaining Caravans, some Festivals, and several of Stewards.

I now follow gamesou into the greens and we are both grabbing Duchies and Estates at every opportunity. The game comes to a heart pounding culmination as gamesou grabs a Duchy and an Estate leaving only one Duchy left and 4 Estates. Either running means the game ends.

If I buy the Duchy I win, but I am forced to double Estate with $4. I play a Possession, look at gamesou's hand to find a Duchy buy waiting for me. I take it for the game and the match.

GGs and a nice series gamesou. I hope to see you around!

When I win the first Prize I actually pick up Trusty Steed instead of Followers. I liked Contraband here with several alternatives for expansive cards (Gold/Harem, Expand/Province) and trash for benefit. Buying 2 of them was a bit risky, but it paid off (or was it just luck ?).

Congratulations to 50 ! I'm happy to have seen Possession games to finish the series. This is one of my favorite cards !

I've been playing pretty poorly lately.  I think I'm coming down with a severe case of FPS (Fancy Play Syndrome)

In game one  was hoping to get some Provinces with Gold and trash my extra Sea Hag with Bishop.  Dunno why I'd do that with Gardens present.

Game two I didn't think that Horn would work.  I never considered doing a mini horn and just trash a few for Provinces.  Ed got a lead that I couldn't overcome due to that.

Game 3 I think I played particularly well.  Trader is just so good for amassing lots off medium quality cards.

Game 4 I threw away a lead.  I won the Curse split but decided that I could make an engine.  If I had just went for Duchy/Duke I would have won.

Game 5 was just no chance for ed.  RNG gave me lots of Familiars and him none.  You can't come back from something like that.

Game 6 I errored with Nobles.  I thought I could use them to make an engine but things never came together for me.  Ed picked up a Province and Followers and I just never caught up.

Congrats to ed.  And as I told him at the end of the series.  Last year I was eliminated by the eventual tourney champion.  So I am now expecting nothing less of a championship performance from ed.  ;)

Is Potion/Chapel the right opening? Neither of you get Familiar with your first Potion draw, and would have been better of with Silver/Chapel. shark_bait came out okay since he was able to buy Silver on turn 4 while ed could not. shark_bait's draws made it equivalent to opening Silver/Chapel then buying Potion on turn 4. Potion/Chapel is a big risk, and I don't think the potential benefit outweighs the risk. You can get in one earlier Curse that's going to get Chapeled anyway, but you risk being stuck forever on Pearl Divers.

Scryordie(50) and ednever played ahead to the next round.
Result: ednever over 50, 4-2
Games below:

Game one: ednever
Key cards: Goons, Throne Room, Lab, Wishing Well, Gardens
Really close game with both players hitting !details almost every turn. I utilized most of my buys every turn, loading up on Wishing Wells and Throne Rooms. 50 went a little heavier into Goons and Labs, then transitioned into Gardens. It was very very tight - to the point where we both seemed to take turns running down piles. Then I got one mega-mega turn at the end and finished it off. But I was sweating!

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/04/game-20130104-171635-18512e3f.html

Game 2: 50
Key Cards: Embargo, Hoard, Stables, Monument, Mandarin
A Big Money match made interesting with Embargo. 50 just plays it better. Mandarin opening worked for him I think with the ability to smooth $s.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/04/game-20130104-172239-f45d9d85.html

Game 3: ednever
Key Cards: Young Witch (Workshop Bane), Wishing Well, Alchemist, Fool's Gold, Upgrade
50 ignored YW way too long (maybe the psychological effect of me opening with the Bane card. I took advantage and used workshop to load up on Wishing Wells so I could use the Alchemists to draw my deck and always have a potion in hand. Upgrade later let me load up on YWs and play them whenever he didn't have a Workshop in hand.
I had won the curse war 7-0 (three in the trash) and was able to draw my deck every turn.
Then tragedy struck. I played a wishing well and triple clicked on copper. Instead of playing my treasure (and potion) and buying a Province, instead I purchased a Copper - and my alchemist stack disappeared.

Without any prompting or requests from me 50 resigned and gave me the game. A very very good sport. I still had a reasonable shot of re-building the stack and still winning the game, but if it hadn't happened I had it locked. 50 definitely wins the true spirit award!

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/04/game-20130104-173354-81ae65e2.html

Game 4: 50
Easily the most interesting game. Maybe the most interesting game I've played in a long long time.
Key Cards: Embargo, IGG, Scrying Pool, Worker's Village, Steward, Hunting Party, Navigator, Merchant Ship
50 goes for Potions, so I pick up an Embargo and Embago Pools. He picks up a few anyway and uses his Steward to trash the curses + the curses I hand him from IGG. He picks up an Embargo too and Embagos IGG stoping me from the classic rush. Then he Embargos Provinces which slows me down some more. He uses the time to build up a huge engine: 7 worker's Village, 4 Merchant Ships, 3 Stewards, a Navigator and 3 Hunting Parties.
He makes a pretty huge mistake at one point and buys a double-embargo'd Scrying Pool, but he still recovers!
It comes down to a photo finish where I have to start making choices about staying ahead with VP, or ending it on piles. I don't think I have the two turns to end it on piles - curse gone, one card remaining in HP and WV. I decide to stay ahead on VP and pick up a duchy. It's over two turns later after 50 plays it exactly right not letting me end it with provinces. He double provinces for the win.
Hell of a game and really really well played by 50.

(We are now tied 2-2)
Game 5: ednever
This one is my type of kingdom. I open Bishop+Silver. Then pick up Spy+Oasis. Then Menageries and Hunting Parties. Between My Bishop, his, and the Menageries I'm drawing my deck pretty fast and picking up provinces and trashing them with Bishop. I run away with this one.

Game 6: ednever
Another really really interesting match.
Key Cards: Masquerade, Torturer, Village, Haggler, Apprentice, Pawn, Silk Road (You can tell it's interesting when there are 7 key cards)
We both open Masq-Silver and start to build Torturer chains. I pick up a Haggler first though. I think that I can handle a little bit of cursing due to the Masq, and I think the Haggler will help me pick up the Torturer-Village combo faster to over take him.
That's kind of what happens, only to the extreme. He starts walloping me with Torturer Chains. I take a lot of curses. But slowly with Masq I'm able to recover. Key turning point is when I hit him with a Torturer, he discards, then I play a Masq and get him to pass me a Torturer.
then I transition into Greening- my Haggler lets me pick up Province + Gold or Apprentice. My deck gets pretty lean as I kill all the curses and the coppers. I have to start passing Villages over to 50 a few times. But by this point I am 15 points ahead and can consistently pick up a Province every turn.

When 50 is ready to start greening he hesitates.

I chime in (trying my best to return the favor from Game 3):
18:07 ednever: I think your only hope is to pick up Pawns and get extra buys
18:07 50: Big silk road transition?
18:07 ednever: and go the Silk Roads
18:07 ednever: Yeah. It's a long shot but I don't think you can do it with Provinces
18:07 50: Yeah

So he does. I start taking down the Provinces one by one. When there is one province left and I am ahead by about 17 points, 50 finishes his turn and does a calculation: He can get to within 3 points on me and end the game. A hell of a come back.
He picks up Duchies instead and I kill a Province with my Apprentice to end it.

Crazy game: From Masq to P1 Torturer engine to recovery and P2 Torturer engine to Apprentice fueled single province turns vs. multi-buy Silk Roads "rush". Not many games have the number of transitions seen here. Great way to end the series.

Thanks 50. It was a real pleasure.

Drab Emordnilap concedes to easwaran.

This tournament has been a true model of sportsmanship, I have to say.

Game 1: Baron, Embassy, Gardens, Haggler, Mine, Oracle, Pawn, Throne Room, Warehouse, and Wishing Well (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/13/game-20130113-131917-9c4fa1fa.html)  Both open wharehouse/baron into a garden rush game.  I fit in an early Haggler while still managing to get 4 Gardens.  My plan wasn't even to Gardens that early, but he spooked me with the threat of the early rush so I contested them early and captured 4.  I built a sloppy throne room engine that managed to connect a couple times which was enough for the win.

Game 2: Caravan, Chapel, Colony, Expand, Feast, Fortune Teller, Hamlet, Jack of All Trades, Moat, Platinum, Silk Road, and Talisman (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/13/game-20130113-133051-5fc640be.html)  My Talisman/Chapel against his Jack/Chapel.  I drew well early, getting double caravan turn 3 and a solid chapel turn 4 whereas his chapel got caught up and didnt get played until turn 6.  I think I was sloppy midgame.  I had to leave a bunch of copper in my deck, eventually went into double expand, with a midgame jack of all trades for drawing and silvers to expand.  Probably could've played it smoother but I think the clean turn 3/4 was enough to win it regardless.

Game 3: Ambassador, Fairgrounds, Festival, Inn, Moat, Noble Brigand, Talisman, Torturer, Vault, and Watchtower (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/13/game-20130113-133754-64064258.html)  My Festival/Moat against his Vault/Moat.  I dont like vault here, maybe it's worthwhile mid game.  I wanted a clean festival/watchtower engine that tried to sneak an ambassador by here and there.  I had some timely ambassador hits and his ambassador was late to the party.  He never picked up watchtower so I figured there was an opening for torturer.  By late game I was rolling.

Game 4: Apprentice, Bazaar, Counting House, Haven, Inn, King's Court, Potion, Scheme, Sea Hag, Silk Road, and Vineyard (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/13/game-20130113-134321-efca7f58.html)  His Scheme/Sea Hag beats my Silver/Sea Hag.  His Sea hag was devastating but I will give him credit, he read the board better than I did.  I bought the silver hoping for an early apprentice which never materialized.  Meanwhile his opening scheme won curses 7-3 and he was shooting for counting house from the start, which was strong.

Game 5: Black Market, Bridge, City, Embargo, Haggler, Mandarin, Nomad Camp, Pawn, Potion, Secret Chamber, and Vineyard (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/13/game-20130113-135320-52d0b39f.html) My Silver/Black Market against his Nomad Camp/Bridge.  Everyone knows I am a sucker for Black Market.  I see enough interesting cards in this one that I cant resist.  He hammers Cities early and wins the split 6/4.  I should've gotten a 2nd Potion early but in the end my early start on Vineyards proved to be enough.  Though it was closer than the score implies.

Obi wins 4-1
