What one Kingdom card is missing from this list?
Cultist
Knights
Rats
Transmute
Treasure Map
Honorable mention: Fool's Gold, Peddler
...and what card would be a Dishonorable Mention? ;)
(hope I haven't missed any....)
-
I'm pretty sure it's _____________Crossroads__________, but I think that if Peddler is an honorable mention then Mint and possibly Native Village, Island, Trade Route, Pirate Ship, and other things that escape me at the moment should be too.
-
I'm terrible at these, and lazy too.
Is the theme cards that name themselves in their text?
-
None of the ones that shMerker lists is the correct answer, and DWetzel's observation is both true and relevant, but not the defining criterion.
-
Oh, but actually, Fool's Gold doesn't have the requisite property either, on closer examination. My mistake; it shouldn't be on the list. I'll move it to Honorable Mention.
-
No further guesses, eh? All right, here's a major clue: the Dishonorable Mention is Black Market.
-
Is the theme cards that affect other copies of themselves when played?

Is the theme cards that affect other copies of themselves when played?
No, but that's relevant.
-
I'm going to go with Duchess or Embargo as the other one.
-
Those cards almost fit a theme of cards that trash copies of themselves, except Rats wouldn't fit then, and I would have no idea why Peddler is even mentioned.
-
The Knight cards don't name themselves in the text. "Knight" is a type, like "Action" or "Victory". It would be like saying that Silk Road refers to its name, or Throne Room refers to its name.

I'm going to go with Duchess or Embargo as the other one.
One of these is right! I can't figure out why you thought of the other one, though. What's the pattern you're thinking of?

Is it cards with on-trash benefits?

No.

Here's my guess:
They are all cards whose functionality is changed or "broken" in some sense if they are in the Black Market deck. If you get Cultist or Knights from the Black Market, you have the only copy in the game, so the card will never play/trash a copy of itself. Transmute and Rats can never gain copies of themselves if there's only one, and Treasure Map can never activate if you only ever have one. Fool's Gold doesn't have its functionality changed completely because you can still Counterfeit it, but there's no other way to play two copies (and this trashes it). Peddler will always cost 8 from the BM deck, but that's not related to their being only one copy of it. Duchess is the missing card, because you can never use the "gain it with a Duchy" ability because it's not in the supply. If I'm right, I'd argue that Peddler might actually belong on the list, but it probably has to do with the specific wording of what you had in mind, which I don't think I'm smart enough to figure out.
Edit:
Oh, and Black Market is dishonorable mention because it's the only kingdom card that CAN'T be in the BM deck.
-
Bingo, Drowned Kernel!
Peddler is honorable mention because even though you can't buy it for less than $8, its price reduction will still manifest if you play one or more actions and then have Peddler in hand when you buy a Farmland—how's that for an edge case?
Oh, and there is (at least) one other way to get $4 out of a Fool's Gold from the Black Market—it's the silly combo where you play the Fool's Gold, gain a Mandarin (via Horn of Plenty and/or Black Market), top-deck the Fool's Gold, and play a Venture to re-draw and play the Fool's Gold.
-
Out of curiosity, did you have a specific wording in mind? What I came up with wasn't terribly concise.
-
Each card on the list has an ability that cannot be executed in a game where the card is in the Black Market deck.

I'm going to go with Duchess or Embargo as the other one.

Something about the first copy affecting a second copy, or mentioning itself in the text
