Title: Buy how many coppers?
Post by: Copernicus on July 29, 2011, 04:28:58 pm
Based on a recent game I played-

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110728-165337-922a1797.html

It's my turn, and I've finally made the perfect King's Court/City deck.  Only problem is my opponent has been buying all the Colonies and I'm way behind on points.  My plan is to catch up with Banks and Coppers.

Setup at the beginning of my turn --

4 Colony, 8 Province, 0 Nobles, 8 Duchy, 8 Estate, 10 Curse
4 King's Court, 9 Bazaar, 0 City, 10 Vault, 9 Menagerie, 7 Trade Route
12 Platinum, 9 Bank, 30 Gold, 6 Quarry, 10 Loan, 38 Silver, 46 Copper

Copernicus turn 14
lysosome: 46 points : 4 Colony, 1 Bank, 2 King's Court, 3 Nobles, 1 Bazaar, 2 City, 2 Quarry, 1 Silver, 2 Trade Route, 0 Estate, 7 Copper
Copernicus: 10 points : 4 King's Court, 5 Nobles, 8 City, 2 Quarry, 0 Menagerie, 0 Silver, 1 Trade Route, 0 Estate, 0 Copper

Assuming that my hand would allow for purchasing 3 Banks and around 20 buys, how many coppers would you purchase?  My goal is to win the next turn and my opponent has been fairly good at buying a Colony every turn and maybe a Province if they're unlucky.

If your opponent buys a Colony, you need to purchase the remaining 3 Colonies plus 3 provinces to win the game from your current position.  The best you can do is to chain all 4 King's courts, which triples 7 of your 8 Cities.  This gives 22 coins from Cities, and we need 57 to buy the required Colonies and Provinces.  3 banks will give 6 + 3 x <# of Coppers>.  We also get 1 coin for each Copper, so our actual total will be 6 + 4 x <# of Coppers>.  ((57 - 22) - 6)/4 = 7.25 = # of Coppers.  We can't buy 1/4 of a Copper, so the final number we need is 8.  The twoone (I checked the game log and you only have 1, you might want to correct the OP) Quarry you already have can stand in for a Copper, so the minimum to buy is 7.

If your opponent is unlucky and only gets a Province, then you only need the last 4 Colonies and a Duchy to win the game, which is a total of 49 coins.  Applying the same math, we end up needing 5 Coppers.

Targeting 3 colonies and 3 provinces for victory needs $57.  I'm going to be pessimistic and assume you only hit your 4 KCs singly, 2 on Cities and 2 on Nobles, and that you manage to draw your whole deck.

This gives you a base of $12 from cities (it won't be worth playing the TR for $2 except on a City and I don't want to count on having an extra one).  Getting the extra $45 works out with 8 coppers and 2 quarries (worth $10 and banks for 11,12,13 for $46).  This needs only 8 coppers and adding a total of 11 extra treasure cards to your deck.  Given your deck has the ability to draw something like ~38 extra cards (depending on KC's) in a deck of 20 presently going up to 31, it seems pretty likely you'll manage to draw everything and win.
