Is not an opening I ever thought I'd make. (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201206/22/game-20120622-113014-69056290.html)
cards in supply: Cartographer, Duke, Feast, Fortune Teller, Lookout, Navigator, Oracle, Remodel, Smugglers, and Talisman
#1 qmech: 36 points (4 Dukes, 4 Duchies, and 8 Estates); 20 turns
opening: Copper / Duchy
[35 cards] 4 Dukes, 2 Smugglers, 1 Feast, 1 Fortune Teller, 12 Coppers, 3 Silvers, 8 Estates, 4 Duchies
#1 paddyodoors: 36 points (3 Dukes, 4 Duchies, a Province, and 6 Estates); 20 turns
opening: nothing / Cartographer
[29 cards] 3 Dukes, 2 Cartographers, 1 Fortune Teller, 7 Coppers, 4 Silvers, 1 Gold, 6 Estates, 4 Duchies, 1 Province
This Kingdom screams Duke about as loudly as it is possible to do. With the Feast and Smugglers each offering the prospect of cheap Duchies and Dukes, I take the plunge, with (mutually) happy results.

Haha, that' really nice. 5/2 is really bad here. I think I wouldn't have seen or wouldn't have dared that.
-
Talisman!
-
At least you both got 5/2.
On 4/3 I probably open something like talisman/smugglers.
5/2 I guess talisman/copper.
-
I only registered the Talisman when I pasted the cards into the OP. I'm quite prepared to believe it's a better start than the Duchy.
(The game was played with identical starting hands, but I cut that line from the summary.)

Duchy can't actually be the right opening. You're going to see that card enough times that something else has to be better. Smugglers only has to gain one Duchy/Duke to break even.
-
I believe even silver is a better opening actually. Though duchy isn't SO bad, considering the game will likely largely come down to winning the duchy split, which you need to go after very quickly.

The only thing that speaks against that is that the other cards you want are so cheap that you can pick them up later without difficulty even if you do draw the Duchy, so it might not do any harm. The other cards being cheap speaks even more in favour of Talisman though.

Obviously Feast/Copper is the best opening on 5/2, if you're going for the Feast/Duke rush.

I would have gone with Cartographer/nothing, so I'm gratified to see a level 34 player agree. :)
