Title: Sentiments to Isotropic (and Dougz)
Post by: shark_bait on June 01, 2012, 02:47:06 pm
With the new online dominion quickly approaching, I think it's a great time to share our great appreciation to all of the time and effort put forth into isotropic.

Ode to Isotropic

Thank you Doug Z, for making iso
I wish that it never had to go
The time that you spent is appreciated
Thank you for all that you have created

Countless hours of dominion playing
Wondering what player up high will reign
Climbing the leaderboard is tons of fun
It's sad that this board will soon be done

Using text or images for which you prefer
Player customization is what they confer
New features have been added left and right
Much to F.DS's great delight!

From your house this operation was run
Being managed by you, the only one
We recognize that you did this all for free
You could have easily have charged a fee

I'm sure that all of the community agrees
That our love for iso, you should see
So take this poem as our gratitude
We're sorry if we've ever had a poor attitude

Thank you Doug Z, for making iso
We wish that it never had to go
The time that you spent is appreciated
Thank you for all that you have created!

Though I've only just begun
This heavenly beautiful train of fun,
Though I've not played more than 300 games
From this site I can barely restrain.

I was just starting to come 'round the bend
Why did this site have to end!
All iso's assets were wonderfully grand;
And not one cent did you demand.

A poin tracker to keep the pace
Just incase you've lost your place;
Game logs to see your flaw, to post,
To laugh at, cry for help, or boast.

And so many others, I can't name them all
Veto Mode, Solitare, Secret Chamber, Great Hall,
We thank you, DougZ, for what you have made;
How we wish that this site could have stayed...

Dougz, if you opened an account where we could donate something to thank you for the awesome job you did with iso, I dont think I'd be the only one who'd be happy to show our gratitude in a concrete way.

.. dont even know if that would be legal or anything but just putting it out there. Isotropic is just an incredible product and you deserve something for making the effort without asking anything in return.

I can't see why giving someone a thank-you gift should be illegal.

It's not illegal at all.  The especially if you wait until iso is shut down to give (but even if you don't).

I've put more hours into iso than me or my wife would like to admit to.  I think this is a fantastic idea to give back...  Definitely high enough caliber to have warranted a fee long ago.

dougz@isotropic.org is a registered user on paypal...  Which is an interesting twist over google wallet :)  He certainly deserves a beer on all of us, even if we can't buy it in person.

Whoops, I was in San Jose the other week and complete forgot about this.

Also, the constraints problem, where you basically couldn't put in constraints, seems to be fixed now.
Where does DougZ live? I need to buy him a few drinks.

Can someone update me?  Is isotropic going away? Where is the new spot to play Dominion?

Much of the discussion regarding the replacement can be found here (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=2700.0) and the future website for the replacement is here (http://playdominion.com/).  They haven't determined a release date yet, but the idea is that once the official version goes public, isotropic will be shut down.

There's also a sub-forum dedicated to this: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?board=28.0 (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?board=28.0)

What is rrenaud's law?

Is it something to the point of - No matter how big a deal some seems to be on f.dominionstrategy, someone will miss it entirely?

Godwin's law for f.ds, a long thread will eventually talk about the official version?

I think a more correct version would be that the longer a thread discusses the new version, the higher the likelihood that someone will ask "Iso is going away? When??"

When I first posted this Ode to Iso, I was under the assumption that iso would be dying in the very near future.  To my great joy, it has stayed up for 9 months more than what I was originally expecting.  During that time I was able to have highlights such as getting up to Level 44, Rank #11, and Mean Skill #2.  Thanks to everyone who has made playing dominion such a fantastic hobby.  It's truly a testament to this community that during my thousands of games played, I could count the number of opponents I wouldn't want to play again on a single hand.  If any of guys are ever in Michigan, let's play dominion.  I unfortunately don't plan on making the transition to Goko at the moment.

I've gotta force you to go to UCon and to join the AAGG.

Sorry to hear you won't be joining us on Goko.

I'm disappointed that you didn't/couldn't go to NU for grad school, shark_bait (though obviously going to grad school takes priority over playing Dominion with dondon :D)

I actually considered the AAGG but with the business of grad school it's hard to find a lot of extra time.  Most of my gaming lately has been with people in my department so it's nicer to grow relationships with those who I will be spending the next 4 years with.  However the following meme applies quite well to my irl dominion conundrum.

With Goko I just can't get myself into it.  It's so easy for me to play a quick iso game and I'm also rather unmotivated to completely start the leaderboard from scratch.  I can maintain my rating on iso with ease, but I don't play nearly enough online dominion anymore to get to where I would want to be on Goko.

My only rejection letter came from them  :/

Well, I got both of my Iso accounts to ~L40 after less than 300 games apiece, so climbing the leaderboard doesn't take as much effort as you think.

I guess it's unfair to compare the iso and goko rating system, kinda like apples to oranges.  But still, I don't see myself playing a significant amount of games in the near future;  that will mean that it would take me a long time to get my rating to accurately reflect my skill.

Don't worry, it's not very hard to move up (or down *cough*) the pro leaderboard. Especially if you are a great player, which you are.

Moving down is way too easy.  :(  I barely climb at all on wins but can fall 40 places with a single loss.

Sorry for my Goko naivety, but I take it it's not like iso and updates the leaderboard each game rather than once each night?

IMO, that takes away some of the thrill.  I always enjoyed the suspense of wondering how high I would raise after a particularly good day (and of course the ignorance of ignoring a bad day until the next morning).

Well, if you're playing people with a lower rating, then winning will do very little and losing will do quite a lot.  I was at like #70-ish, and then I had a losing streak, and I'm slowly clawing my way back out of the triple digits.
