Title: [Complete] Governor's Ball
Post by: Galzria on May 03, 2012, 12:35:47 pm
Dear Sir or Madame,

I would like to personally invite you to this years Governor's Ball. As you're probably aware, the winner of this years Masquerade will Lord over all the Province's in the Kingdom, and your knowledge and service to us all has been invaluable. Indeed, there are few who know all of the intricacies of our beloved Dominion better than you. As such, we would be honored if you came to claim the mantle of Lord as your own. Don't think it'll just be handed over on a Silver platter however. This Feast will include many other highly qualified Dukes and Duchesses, as well as a few Ambassadors from neighboring Kingdoms.

But don't let that discourage you. I have sent my prayers forth from our Chapel, and have faith that you are meant to lead us. There will, of course, be a Festival and Tournament, which you are more than welcome to partake in. I know those living in nearby Border Villages would be inspired by your presence.

I hope for a speedy reply.

Yours in honor,
X

Challenge: End the game on Provinces as few turns as possible.
Rules: You may only purchase Masquerade and Governor. There will be no Black Market. This is a high class event.
Notes: You may gain cards in any fashion you see fit, but all 8 Provinces must be in your deck at the finish.
Points: 1st (4), 2nd (2), 3rd (1)
Bonus: Use the thematic kingdom and have at least one of each card in your deck for TWO bonus points:
Masquerade, Governor, Duke, Duchess, Ambassador, Festival, Tournament, Feast, Chapel, Border Village, !Colony

Deadline: May 13, 11:59PM - I don't care which time zone you're in, just get it submitted before the 14th. 1 Entry per contestant. (Pacific Standard Time if you MUST have a zone)

Cheers!

Dear Sir or Madame,

will you read my book? It took me years to write; will you take a look?

Just so we're clear, when you say we can only purchase masq and governor that means we cannot purchase silver or provinces right? We have to trash golds to get the provinces?

Also the thematic kingdom you presented is only required for the bonus points? We can opt to use any kingdom we want?

Correct on both counts. You may only BUY Governor and Masquerade. Any other card must be gained.

No kingdom requirements outside of the main 2 cards. But to get the bonus (which offers the same number of points as second!) you must play the kingdom.

Masquerade, Governor, Duke, Duchess, Ambassador, Festival, Tournament, Feast, Chapel, Border Village, !Colony

I would like to congratulate you on managing to create a situation where Bag of Gold is the optimal prize to gain first (if you're gaining prizes, that is).

Is it necessarily better than steed?

It would seem so. The +actions of steed aren't very enticing (what terminal are you frequently using?), The +cards are covered by governor for the most part (which does it in a superior manner, whereas Bag-Of-Gold does the gain-a-gold-option in a better manner than governor), +2coins is useless, and the gain 4 silvers... yea.

Plus, since there is no buying besides Governor and Masquerade, you will need a lot of gold (or Border Village, but good luck getting those quickly).

Aaand, since I bumped timchen's up, I'll shamelessly throw one in for myself here too.  ;D This one's up through the end of the weekend, and I've seen some good results so far. I'm looking forward to seeing how many times Governor is used to remodel... And for what cards?

One day left, not many entries so far... Lots of chances on this one! Let's see what you can do!

I'm trying to figure out if 12 turns is decent, or if I need to actually work and get it down lower ;)

Couple more hours left. Got a handful of entries so far. Lots of room to slip in and grab a spot. My top 3 so far span 5 turns, so I know there's room to finish well.

(I wonder if Mothers Day is driving traffic down? Max users online today is only 68, which is about 25-30 off the norm, and most of the day "Users" have hovered around 15-20)

Alright, results:

Like I said, submissions were low for this one, which I'm a little sad about, as I made a point of avoiding a Bridge/Highway/KC powerboard. However, maybe people are just tired of Governor (arguably as strong, if not more)?

Still, I was hoping to see just how fast someone could come up with to play this, given a fairly balanced setup. Anyway, we have:

In third, with 17 turns, Saturday Wins!:
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/13/game-20120513-201228-d6f573ad.html

In second, with 13 turns, Schneau:
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/05/game-20120505-045457-c8e9666f.html
(Note the skipped turns to reach the 5/2 split)

And sneaking in 1 turn faster, in 12 turns, Powerman:
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/13/game-20120513-061152-bcbf56de.html

And there you have it. Powerman's use of Governor to quickly build up Estate->Tournament->Border Village (Governor) seemed very elegant. He probably realized gaining $10 hands (with 2 buys) was going to be rather difficult, so looked to pick up Governor's via remodel as fast as possible. The 2/4/6 price-point landing on Border Village (which as a non-terminal $6 is a plus) sped things up *just* enough.

I'm not 100% sure my messages were working right... I wasn't receiving e-mails at times when I should've been about new messages, so if you DID send me something, and I didn't receive it, feel free to post here, and I will be happy to update results.

Still, well done everyone, and points will go as follows:

Powerman: 4
Schneau: 2
Saturday Wins!: 1

The next challenge will be up a bit later, and will be a little bit different. There will still be points, but results will be live, and ever-evolving, allowing multiple entries if desired.

Wow, I actually won  8)  Using all the cards was incredibly difficult, and just took too long :P

I came to the realization after the fact that it would be VERY hard to get Ambassador. There were really only two ways: Feast trashing, or gaining through Border Village. Everything else wasn't *terrible*, and I think could be gained in a reasonable amount of time. I should've changed it to just having acquired a copy of each card at *some point*, and not *have a copy of each at the end*. It still would've been close though.

Plus silver was tough to get... unless that wasn't actually required?

Ah, it would've fallen under that dreaded "3" cost too. No, I meant just the kingdom cards for the bonus point, not CSGEDP.

Oh shoot, I got all the kingdoms in 13 but had no way of getting a silver :P lol

Would've loved to see the log! Sorry for the lack of clarity. If you ever wonder, feel more than free to ask!
