Weekly Design Contest #175 - Super Expensive
Pretty Simple: Design a card or card-shaped thing that has a 9 or greater in it's cost.
Please submit your entries by 11 am UTC, Sunday the 22nd. Judging will take place on Monday, and the contest will (hopefully) end on Tuesday.
Thank you, and have fun!
-
This should be 175, not 174. 174 was the last one.
-
Painter
$9 Action
Choose one: +2 Cards; or gain a card costing up to $5.
____
During a player's Buy phase, this costs $2 less per Action card they have in play.
Notes: Peddler meets an Artisan/Moat combo. Unlike Peddler, it’s rare that the split will be as decisive or as pivotal to race for.
Hopefully it fits the rules of the contest!
-
yep, that fits the rule of the contest!

You're probably gonna get a lot of asterisks in this contest.

Mineshaft - $9
Project
When you play a Treasure, you first get +$1.
When you gain a Victory card, +1 Buy.
It’s a Coppersmith (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Coppersmith) that you don’t have to play and works on all Treasures. It got the +1 Buy so that it’s useful in games with no other +Buy.

The grand Exchange: trade the worst card in your hand for a (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7d/Coin5.png/16px-Coin5.png)-cost from the Supply. ;) It's like a little Wish that plays each turn. Kind of.
-
I'll keep it simple this time.
Leprechaun Gold
$9 - Event
Gain a Gold and a card costing up to $5.

Well this is about 98% the idea i was going to use including the name. Guess i'll need to rethink. ;D
-
Ok, so here is another idea:
Brutal Giant
$9 Action
You may trash a Treasure to gain a Gold. You may trash a Victory to gain a Duchy. You may trash a card in your hand or from play (including this) for +1 Villager.
So i made a few cards for a set. Here is one.
Empire
$14 Victory
14 Victory

Empire
$14 Victory
14 Victory
There's already an official Event that basically accomplishes this:

Thank you for noting this. :)
That Event is certainly nice to have as an alternative strategy in those rare games that it is used. My card employs a different, more traditional strategy. I plan to replace Colony with Canton and Empire. So this will be in more of my games. :)
If needed, i can replace this submission with one of my other two ideas - Savage Cyclops or Brutal Giant. Builder_Roberts let me know, otherwise i'll let it ride.
-
Worth noting that existing victory cards follow a fixed pattern: the cost goes up by 3$ whereas the VPs go up one more each time. So 1 -> 3 -> 6 -> 10 -> 15, which is why Dominate is 15 VP total, not 14.
-
Gentrification
Project
$12
Set aside a non-Victory Action card from the supply next to this and place your project cube on it.
_______________________________________________________________________________
When scoring +2VP per card you have from that pile.
Notes
- Not happy with the wording regarding the scoring but I am trying to imply that if this is put on a split pile all cards in that pile score 2 points each.
- The non victory clause is to prevent a player claiming the Castles pile by setting aside one that is also an action.
- I am a bit unsure of the pricing for this. For the number of points it can potentially score without adding cards that clog your deck it needs to be expensive. I feel it has to be more then Colony but other than that I am not sure.
Changes
- Following feedback I have reduced the cost to $10 and given 3VP per card instead of 2.
Changes II
- Reverting back to the original as there is conflicting feedback as to whether it is too strong or too weak.

I don't think this is really worth the price. You need a LOT of cards from a given pile to justify spending $12 on it imo.

Still playing around with next-time Durations (this is definitely my new favorite Dominion mechanic, it's so simple and there's so much untapped design space here).
Here's another one: Pledge lets you pay a little extra to get a delayed Province that will stay out of your deck for a couple extra shuffles. There's also a 2 Duchies option to give the card some more variability in the endgame. Don't get too greedy though: the last thing you want is for the game to end before you've honored your Pledge!
-

Thank you for pointing to this pattern. :)
You are so close.
Estate-1 (1-0)=1
Duchy-3 (3-1)=2
Province-6 (6-3)=3
Colony-10 (10-6)=4
(15-10)=5
While the price increases by $3, the difference in the VP (from one to the next) increases by one.
I'm not sure why it took me eleven years to notice this pattern. :P i so silly. i remake Empire now.
-
Metropolis
Action - $10
+3 Actions
+3 Cards
+3 Buys
You may trash up to 3 cards from your hand.
-
Update: just spotted that this is very similar to Gentrification, so withdrawing it and will try to think of something else.
Update 2: new submission (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=21625.msg900099#msg900099).

I don't think this is really worth the price. You need a LOT of cards from a given pile to justify spending $12 on it imo.
In the common case where a 10-card pile runs out, you'll get 10 VP if you split the pile 5-5 (so it's a marginally more expensive Colony that doesn't give you a dead card in your deck), or 12 VP if you win the split 6-4. (I suppose the set-aside card also gives 2 VP?) In either case, you have to buy Gentrification before the pile has emptied.
So I think this is competitively priced if you tie or win any Action pile split.
The best-case scenario is setting aside Rats - you'll rapidly get 40 VP. ;)

Just spotted this after posting a very similar idea (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=21625.msg900049#msg900049) (which I've now withdrawn as it's too similar). I phrased it as a token Event similar to Pathfinding though, which I think works a bit better: you don't need to set anything aside, and it explicitly refers to a pile so there's no ambiguity about split piles or Castles.

Nah. Even in a 3P game you can get 4 copies of a card. Then you get the same amount of VPs as from Mountain Pass and people frequently spent more on it.
Sure, it is more complex as Mountain Pass has Debt costs and can thus be more easily paid for and Mountain Pass is unique, so it is also about forsaking VPs for the opponents. But Gentrification can net you more VPs and Mountain Pass is nonetheless the closest benchmark that illustrates that an 8VP Victory card plus a Lab (which is effectively what you get) is worth a lot.
The current version is far too strong.

man I even explicitly googled just to check for this, since I don't know the newest cards >:( guess I should've checked the wiki instead of google images
No problem, I'll rename it.

The End of the Rainbow
Project 9%
At the start of your buy phase, you may pay 2% to choose 1 of the following to gain onto your deck: A price, A Spirit, A Loot, A Heirloom, A Zombie, A Wish. Then you may take one of the following: Flag, Key, Treasure Chest, Lost in the Woods.
It gives you everything you would ever want. The Project part makes it so you cant just take it with a lucky early hand. Of course some cards here are better then others, but none are trash. Let me know what you think and if this qualifies! You might pick it up early, but i might have the golem problem , you never know when to weaken youself to potentially make yourself stronger after!

Sadly this does not qualify; the 9 (or greater) needs to be in it's initial cost, not it's upkeep. I like the idea, though, keep this in your back pocket!

If Sumrex would like to submit something else, that's fine, but otherwise;
Contest Closed
Thank you for all your submissions!
Judging will take place tomorrow, hopefully finished on Tuesday.

Well, it could be rectified via doing it as pure Event without the $2 „entry costs“ via the Project.

Pretty good, actually! Needs an Asterisk in it's cost, but that's a minor nitpick. I do like 5-gainers. 8/10

weirdly enough, this was the last asterisk in this contest. Effect needs a little rewording to make it closer to WotChameleon. Works good as a Lost City type thing. 8/10

Mineshaft - $9

I like this quite a lot! 9/10

Idk if this is worth $10, but it's close enough. really cool effect! 9/10
Leprechaun Gold
$9 - Event
Gain a Gold and a card costing up to $5.
11$ worth of stuff for $9. Pretty good! 8/10
Gentrification
Project
$12
Set aside a non-Victory Action card from the supply next to this and place your project cube on it.
_______________________________________________________________________________
When scoring +2VP per card you have from that pile.
Nice, a Obelisk you choose; Honestly the fact that this takes a card out of it's pile is what brings this down for me; well, unless in setting it aside you also gain it, giving you +2vp. At 12 this probably never gets picked up, sadly enough. 6/10
(https://i.imgur.com/sa3QTIG.png)
Pledge just doesn't seem worth it to me. why would I buy this instead of just gaining a Province? I do like the next time mechanic though. 6/10
Metropolis
Action - $10
+3 Actions
+3 Cards
+3 Buys
You may trash up to 3 cards from your hand.
I like this a lot! just a big Lost City with a lot of extra stuff! 10/10
(https://i.ibb.co/LgJ6DFQ/Summoner.png)
I like night cards, but this just seems so close to perfect for it's cost. 9/10 needs just one little something to kick it up. Idk what.

Summon but it's actually good. 10/10

I actually thought stonecrafting was pretty good. Golden Ticket is really cool though. 10/10 honestly.
Thank you, everyone, for your submissions!
Winner: Gubump with Ceremony.
Runner-ups: Udzu with Wonka Bar/ Golden Ticket and NoMoreFun with Metropolis

Ok, so here is another idea:
Brutal Giant
$9 Action
You may trash a Treasure to gain a Gold. You may trash a Victory to gain a Duchy. You may trash a card in your hand or from play (including this) for +1 Villager.
-
Wow, thanks for the win! Ceremony is actually a redone version of an Event I tried more than half a year ago (dang, it's really been that long already? It feels like it just happened) and had given up on, but this contest gave me the inspiration to come up with a fix for it. Here's hoping it's at least as much of a winner in practice!
Anyway, the next contest will be posted shortly.
EDIT: Next contest is up.

oh! sorry about that. 8/10, the trashing focus is cool.
