Title: Petty Complaints
Post by: spineflu on February 09, 2021, 07:00:38 pm
itt: post your petty complaints. those thousand dreads of every day life that gnaw at the baseboards of your soul.

I'll start: emails confirming you unsubscribed from a mailing list. Like, I just told you I don't want to hear from you, yet here you are, in my inbox.

I hate showers, but people expect us to take showers every day. So I get in the shower and part of me is warm and part of me is cold, and my mind wanders so it's hard to focus on what I'm in there to do and get it over with. And then when it's humid, I can never get all the way dry (I'm hairy). I tire myself out drying off and I'm still damp when I get dressed and it feels icky getting dressed when I'm still damp.

I hate laying in bed waiting to fall asleep. Why can't I be one of those people who falls asleep as soon as their head hits the pillow?

Not sure if it'll work for you, but try listening to Max Richter's Sleep.

f(x) = O(g(x))

is everything that's wrong with people's brains

Upvote. I don't get it (yet). But it's funny enough for an upvote.

To prevent you from trying to find a nonexistent explanation, I'm complaining about how the statement is written

I assume your complaint is about '=' being used for something that it is not an equivalence relation?

I live in south Texas where we got actual winter weather for the first time in about a decade, and a bunch of people and businesses lost power and water because south Texas isn't prepared for real winter. But at my parents' place (where I've been staying for the past year), we never lost power or water. And now it's back up to the mid 70s F, but I couldn't have my cereal this morning because the store was out of milk.

(I cheated. This is actually a thankful post cleverly disguised as a complaint.)

not primarily. that's bad, too, but writing f(x) rather than f is worse.

So what would your preferred way of writing f(n) = O(n^2) be?

f ∈ O(n^2)

If you write this, it's a shorthand for f ∈ O(g) where g : n ↦ n^2. But f(x) ∈ O(g(x)) is nonsensical because f(x) isn't a thing.  f is a function; f(5) is a number, "f(x) = 3x" is a shorthand for f = {...  (-1, -3), (0,0), (1,3), ...}. But f(x) itself is literally not anything.

Hey nerds, move it to the maths thread or at least disguise your post as a petty complaint.

drank a big ol energy drink ahead of what I thought was going to be an all-nighter of an assignment; managed to bang the assignment out in 15 minutes and mentally I'm exhausted but physically I'm wired. I'm upset with me, I should know better than this.

Amazon lists "Movies & TV" and "Blu-ray" as 2 separate sub-categories under the "Movies, Music & Games" category. This makes no sense; clearly "Movies & TV" would be a higher-level category than "Blu-ray"; and it's not like they show a separate sub-category for "DVD".

Perhaps the Blu-ray category also includes stuff like concerts?

This exact situation has happened to me more times than I'd like to admit.

When I select streaming services with my PS4, Disney+ is always the first entry; there doesn't seem to be a way to change this. I don't have Disney+ nor do I want to! Why won't you let me get rid of it?!

It's midterm project season, and since every class has switched to projects for assessments (good!) because they can't proctor exams (bad reason!), all the timetables for the projects are identical (real bad!).

My PC is my landlord is coming over to work on stuff around the house (good!) but he always wants to make chitchat while he's working (miserable!) and I REALLY need to work on these projects.

pre-recorded zoom classes are just Blues Clues that cost 20k/semester to watch. The worst streaming service.

I have a co-worker who constantly gives me work but then changes something and gives me rework. It's gotten to the point that procrastination is the best use of my time since I stand a good chance of doing the work only once, though even then I still might have to do it twice or thrice.

So now I just measure the amount of unnecessary work in units called Jills (name changed to protect the guilty). I have another coworker who isn't that bad, but sometimes I'll measure her shenanigans in Jills. Today was a 0.2-Jill day as Jill gave me no work, but the other coworker gave me work that was really beyond her control. Then I saw that something was missing and got clarification, so it jumped to a 0.6-Jill day.

Well, if you feel like you aren't getting enough notifications in your life, joining Twitter is a great idea.

If I have to manually re-enter my resume info including my email address when applying for jobs, the least prospective employers could do is shoot an email to every non-hired email collected with a "sorry, you didn't get it, gl on the job search." Job searches feel like shouting into the void.

This house hunt in this part of the States is insane. We barely even become interested in a house, and it's snatched up by someone already. Lots of sellers list a deadline of 2 or 3 days after it's gone to market because they know they'll get a lucrative offer.

And after weeks of frustration where we express interest in a house only to be told that it's now under contract or has a deadline in a few hours (which wouldn't even give us the opportunity to "sleep on it"), we finally see a house we like enough to bid on. We go ahead and bid $50k over asking price, though we felt that the sellers underlisted it by $30k, so in our mind, we bid $20k over what the asking price should've been.

And we still didn't get it. I've heard that some buyers are even waiving inspection, and who can blame a seller for choosing that option. Guaranteed sale with no chance to back out? Sold!

Fortunately, we're still comfortable in our current home. It was a bit crazy during the pandemic because our place isn't fit to have two home offices. Now that I'm going into the office physically, my wife has more sanity working at home, so at least we have that going for us.

But yeah, definitely not a great time to go looking for a house unless you have really deep pockets. Or are willing to living far away from the urban core, which is admittedly a self-inflicted problem.
