Right now we have Eevee, EFHW and Ipofanes. Anyone else interested?
-
I’ll def /in if there’s a wait on a 4th - but would pass to anybody that wanted in.
-
I'd like to be in a 2v2 game. May I?

I'd like to be in a 2v2 game. May I?
Yep, go for it.
-
Great. How about me and Eevee against infangthief and Ipofanes? The E's against the I's!
-
Sounds good to me! EFHW, you can be our spymaster first.
-
Ipofanes you happy to go for our team? What time zone are you in?

I guess I am not to follow that link?
As for time zone: UTC+1, but I would prefer a rather chilled game play where time zone should not matter. Apologies if my expectations don't match yours perfectly.

I feel like a bridge player who successfully unravelled a risky bid.

That link generates a new board every time you go there. So there's no harm in following it - you won't find anything about the board being used in this game.
Yes, time zone doesn't really matter, this is not mafia, just out of interest. I suppose the more relevant version of that question would have been do you think like an American or a European :) Which is sometimes relevant for some of the words in some of the games. I'm in the UK, a European wannabe. :P
-
You are absolutely right. I haven't thought of time zone as an indicator of cultural background.

ipofanes we had moments of brilliance there. My last two clues could have been better, sorry.
Filter -> Coffee, Paper, Web, Pass. That went well.
Czech was always going to be difficult to link to anything.
National -> Czech, Dress. Thought about the danger of Forest, but I hoped the National Forest was just a UK thing.
Undercover -> Copper, Night. Actually since Mine had just flipped neutral, I could have done a Dominion: 2 clue for those two, which might have worked better.
Randomiser was a Dominion-themed clue for Back and Copper. I didn't think about Tail till after I'd given the clue. My bad.

COPPER for Randomiser as in coin, and for Undercover as in policeman?
Stadium would have been 2nd choice for National here.
CZECH and DRESS could have easily been connected if we allowed web search, but there's that. I would have given Haljer as a clue for CZECH and COPPER, but that would be dangerous as well.

COPPER for Randomiser as in coin, and for Undercover as in policeman?
Undercover policeman, yes.
But for randomiser, I was thinking Dominion randomisers all the way. The base game has randomiser cards even for all the basic treasures and victory cards. I suppose that might be only 1st edition actually. I'd forgotten that randomiser could have some meaning outside of Dominion!
-
Yeah, it took me up to now to realise that you had the BACK of the cards in mind.
Too bad I am working in the clinical trials domain. http://randomizer.at is one of the sites I use a lot. Apparently it is too much to assume that Dominion is part of my cultural background too.

Maybe I should have just trusted EFHW and avoided it anyway. Tooth + Tablet for pain?
-
You tinker with someone's drink by putting poison in it.
-
What was the 4th tinker?
-
We got incredibly lucky with tinker, it was meant for pan, bell, dress and princess, I just tried to clue the character from Peter Pan. Not a great clue with battery being red also.
-
Really sorry I gave away TOOTH, I thought it had been guessed already.
-
Snoopy was geared at COMIC, ROOF and TAP. Snoopy having siesta on the roof of his shed or performing a tap dance were the images I had in mind.
Weren't BATTERY taken, I'd have started with Faucet 3 hoping for BATTERY, DROP and TAP.
-
I did think about roof for Snoopy. But I thought it was crazy that I should have this image of Snoopy sleeping on the roof, that surely can't seriously actually be meant for that...

How should we play this?
EFHW mistakenly told me Figure was neutral, which is information I should not have.
Should we say that I my first guess next turn must be for Figure? Does that sound fair to everyone?

That's essentially skipping a turn and the info does help both sides. Maybe your second guess? Or no extra.

It helps both of us. I would leave it alone.

Ok, it's only a clue for 1, but I probably need to have a go at both remaining words here.
Notepad: 1 -> Nothing seems certain, but TABLET looks likely.
Paper: 2 remaining (unless Valley was one of them) -> Again, could be TABLET. I suppose you get origami "VALLEY folds" with paper.
Buyer: 1 remaining (unless it was Box or Valley) -> You can buy a BOX set. You can use a TABLET for buying things online. A HAWKer is a seller I think, maybe connected. PLASTIC as in credit card seems a good option, same line of thinking as Check.
State: 1 remaining (unless it was Agent, Check, Box or Valley) -> You CHECK the state/status of something. Is state VACATION a thing?
Tablet and ...
-
Tablet is blue
-
I think I'm going with PLASTIC, for the buyer clue. I do like it because of the similarity with CHEQUE (sic).
Could TABLET and PLASTIC have been clued together, to be clear enough that I'd be sure to get at least one of them...? Probably not.
So. Plastic.

Do you have the "paper or plastic?" question at the grocery store in England?
No, I think it's "cash or card". Cash comprising notes and coins, so I don't think we talk about "paper" money really.

Yes.

Crown is blue
-
Is there a King's pizza in England? Or a King's circle? Those are both round things, and a round clue would have included both, so if only one is blue that explains your not saying round for ball and orange and crown.
I am also completely unfamiliar with Dominion expansions from the last several years.

I was sure there'd be a clue I could give for Crown and Soldier. But couldn't think of a good one in the end. Maybe "Champion" would have been better.
Eevee your "Down" clue was really good. And you did well to get Hand and Thumb without Finger, and Knife and Pizza with Bread (I was leaving Bread till late because of that).
But what's the link from Miniature to Dragon? I thought for sure you'd made a mistake and ipofanes would go for Soldier there!
-
Well done Eevee!
I think the clue "King's with apostrophe" was a good one. Made me think of SOLDIER via the "all the King's men" association.
There was a song by Suzanne Vega about a queen and a soldier, but which single word could convey this.
We still would have been good with the guess I rejected, STATE.
All in all, an unspectacular match without scoops or glorious failures. The Bridge clue was a good start though.
-
I thought fantasy themed miniatures, like Warhammer and whatnot were a closer association than soldier. It was a risk but I was struggling for clues, especially with the constraints I had with leaving certain words on the board (and hoping you'd somehow guess finger and make my life easy with hand and thumb).
Pretty fun board with state being red but France being blue (ruining my Italy-themed clue for pizza), and of course finger being neutral but hand and thumb being red. I was also leaving pizza and state because of bread and France.
-
Your first clue was very impressive.
-
We had 4 Dominion card-shaped things (Bridge, Ball, Soldier, Crown), so I was tempted to try that, but then there were Hand and State (both red).
Other clues I considered:
Rolls: 3 instead of Spherical: 2, in order to include Bread. But I think Orange would be too much of a stretch there.
Louis: 2 for Crown and France.
-
Or even "Antoinette: 4". Would that have worked?
-
That works for crown, France and bread. I don't know what I would have guessed for the 4th. Maybe state.
-
Ready for switching Alliances?
I'd suggest I play with EFHW and that eevee and me give clues.

All's good to me!

EFHW, I really tested your trust with CARD being a wrong guess for the clue Joker. Sorry for that, and given the dud, your guesses were amazing.
My other option for first clue would have been Fortune 3, linking LUCK, SMILE and SOLDIER.
The Spotnicks, are, indeed, a BAND, and my attempt to link ALIEN and MOSCOW.
-
No big deal. What was our last word?
-
No big deal. What was our last word?
Must be soldier I suppose.
Which is funny, because for the 4th "Little" one I was picking between Luck and Soldier, which turned out to be both yours. Eevee's Ides clue persuaded me against Soldier (surely Rome, Soldier and March could have been clued together), which is why I went for Luck at that point. People say "a bit of luck"; do they ever say "a little luck"?
Was Thumb the 4th for "Little"?
-
Gg, I got to say, fang, you are an absolute beast at guessing! I'm amazed.
Thank you. It is the quality of the clues of course.
Good game all round. Overlapping a clue with a neutral word gets awkward if the neutral word is the first guess.
I had a game (I think Eevee was guessing my clues), where both teams hit neutral words on their first turns!
-
There were quite some traps, with SOLDIER and BAND being targets but MARCH of opposite colour, or FILM but not CAST.
I thought about giving Étrangère 2 instead of Clones 2 as clue for SOLDIER and ALIEN (for want of German composites like "Fremdenlegion". Yet I thought it might be challenged as just being the French translation of ALIEN.

Thumb indeed. I think a little luck is used, at least informally.

Generally I think clues in foreign languages are forbidden, unless it's a word also commonly used in english (something like schadenfreude). I would have balked at Etrangere, though it might be I'm just not aware of it's usage.

EFHW, when you are guessing, the last word is always soldier. :D

Some fantastic guessing there getting 5 in a row!
-
Military was such a good clue! It ended up that I had the dust - clue also down correctly, just really struggled with redecorate.
-
Second sneaker was van. Third wing was part.
GG!
-
Redecorate was meant to be Change, Ivory (I believe it is a popular alternative to magnolia as a neutral colour) and Orange (a bit of a stretch, but it's another colour you could paint).
I didn't want to do Military until their Van had gone. Vanguard (opposite of rearguard, as well as being a battleship name) seemed like a stronger link than Doctor, but we were so far behind at that point it seemed worth the risk.
-
I'd have contested Vanguard as it contains VAN.
I am not getting the connections between Sneakers and VAN. This was decisive I think.
ORANGE was a guess since you guys still have an orange in the West Wing.
-
Vans are a sneaker type shoe that you slip on rather than tie. Lol the orange.
-
I didn't realize you were in Germany - sneakers and vans probably not the right terms there.
-
I'd have contested Vanguard as it contains VAN.
No intention of giving Vanguard as a clue; I was only considering how VAN seemed a likely guess for the clue "Military".
-
Go again?
-
yeees

Oh, my kids might have got the connection, it's me rather being out of touch with contemporary culture than with U.S.
-
So infangthief and me pair up for red?
-
sounds fine
Eevee, you want to give clues?
-
I'll make a grid. Eevee and I'll give clues (I think that makes it the other way round from last time ipofanes and I were on a team).
-
Eevee's up first.

Church for sure. Then I have 4 candidates for the other 3: luck, Aztec, India and pyramid. I'll go with Pyramid.

Pyramid too?

Aztec -> India

Both blue

I think church was one of the penitentiaries. Need one more of those and one birthday and one more word total. Maybe pyramid was a penitentiary? Luck

Luck is neutral, though we could do with it being on our side just now...

The corner's been taken, and the ball got cleared down the field to EFHW's strikers. She can't miss, surely?

Gooooooooool! Blue.
-
Yay! This is the only way I'll ever make a soccer goal, so thanks for giving me this opportunity!

Well done team blue. Sorry ipofanes that was an awful game by me, I was struggling to find any link for more than 2 words anywhere.

Celebrity was meant to be Millionaire and Genius.
Torture was just desparation - I felt it had some vague links to Thumb, Deck, Worm, Turkey and Genius. But Night was more likely than some of those so it never would have worked.
-
Eevee - which words went with which clues?
-
Well done team blue. Sorry ipofanes that was an awful game by me, I was struggling to find any link for more than 2 words anywhere.
Given that the only unchanging feature of these matches is that my side loses ... I certainly contributed to the awfulness.
-
Celebrity was meant to be Millionaire and Genius.
I had expected some clue like Brin or Elon to connect those.
I might have tried Mozart 3 to connect TURKEY, MARCH, and GENIUS thinking of the alla turca piano piece https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_Sonata_No._11_(Mozart). But, again, NIGHT would probably ruin it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eine_kleine_Nachtmusik.
I can't think of any good connections either.

Penitentiary: 5
State, cell, night (thinking of long nights alone in a cell, or alternatively many of the activities that might land you in jail happen during night, church and pyramid (for being large buildings like a prison. Outside chance for cake (smuggling a file inside of one like in the cartoons), I missed pound totally.
Birthday: 2
Cake and night (day -> night, also parties happen at night), was a stretch but the rest felt easy to connect and I wanted to make them clue for Turkey before I go for India.
Gods: 4
Church, Pyramid, Aztec, India (hence the plural)

I thought Church was a pun on penitent. I hesitated though, in case someone might be offended.
-
Another one? EFHW and ipofanes giving clues.

I'm game.

Let it commence:

I thought Church was a pun on penitent. I hesitated though, in case someone might be offended.
I actually had to look up the word "penitentary" and was surprised it has nothing to do with church, while penitent has.

I had no idea and have just looked it up too. It seems it does have a variety of less-used (and older) meanings in some church institutions.

That's why it was a pun.

Infinite. Right. So I think this means that you want me to have a go at all the remaining red words this turn...
And/or it might mean that the words I've been close to guessing are correct (Settle, Tail).
Starting with Plate
-
You are sounding like you are a Bridge player informing opponents on the conventions we are using ;D
I'll do the talk at the end.
oh, and PLATE is red

I'm really lost.
I'm going to trust whatever I was thinking earlier and go for Settle and Tail.
-
If Settle and Tail are both red then I'll go for Olive then pass.
-
Bump. EFHW, ipofanes, either of you able to give us colours for Settle, Tail, Olive?

Forgot I could do that! Settle and tail are red. Olive is blue.

Staff was the assassin!
Well, prison seems like a good place for the assassin to be, so I'll take that :)
Sorry ipofanes I clearly wasn't thinking along the same lines as you this game! I struggled to find enough linking words for any of the clues.
-
ok, sorry about this.
With median I thought of watching a vertebrate from behind: HEAD, SPINE, TAIL. Non-cyclops vertebrate I had in mind, so PUPIL came as a surprise.
With farming, it was a tossup between ORANGE and OLIVE, thought orange farming is more usual in US. The other words were DRILL as in seed drill, SETTLE and STOCK as in livestock.
The ∞ indicated that in principle, all words have been targeted so someone thinking like an ipofanes would be able to get them all. Chrome was directed at PLATE (which worked) and LIMOUSINE.
The last one was a crap shot at ORANGE and DRILL which I thought were most in need of getting clues. But by and large a bad move.
-
Ah, ok. Spine worked. But mostly I was thinking about median as the statistical term: school PUPILs (students) being taught about mean, median and mode; also there's all this ranking with pupils being above/below average in their class (despite the government sometimes wanting all pupils to be above average :P). I wondered about TAIL there, as another statistical term, but not until it came up as a likely word for the farming clue too.
-
A spine plot is a thing too in statistics ...
-
My clues: SNOW was cloud and Himalayas. GRASS was court, brush and pipe. MUSHROOM was pizza and Boom.
-
Oh, very clever with boom.
Good cluing, I had it easy this game!
-
My clues: SNOW was cloud and Himalayas. GRASS was court, brush and pipe. MUSHROOM was pizza and Boom.
Guess it was convenient that OLIVE was taken care of by me.
-
I'm going to call it a day on this game. Anyone else welcome to take my spot for the next round.
-
Yes, me too. I am quite sobered up about my performance. Thanks all for the great rounds and apologies to my team mates.
-
Fun playing with you!
