Title: M130: Star Trek: Voyager mafia (Game Over: Maquis Win!)
Post by: jotheonah on July 29, 2020, 02:14:04 pm
Welcome to Star Trek: Voyager Mafia

I noticed that there are no games in sign-ups right now. Since I ran DS9 a couple of times I thought I would try to run a Voyager-themed setup.

The setup is a re-flavoring of War in the Palace (https://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?title=War_in_the_Palace) by PokerFace.

It's an open, nightless setup for 7 ofto 9 players. It has very weird rules, including a plurality exile rule.

The Voyager crew has just been stranded in the Delta Quadrant. Starfleet Captain Kathryn Janeway and Maquis Commander Chakotay have decided to work together to get their crews home. OR HAVE THEY? It turns out old habits die hard, and some members of the crew want to see Chakotay in charge. In addition, Seska, a Cardassian spy formerly embedded in the Maquis crew, wants them all dead.

Two players will have the roles of Janeway and Chakotay. They win if the other one dies and Seska dies and they still live. They have no information about other players' identities. They each have a once-per-game daykill which has to be public if the other Captain is alive but can be secret if the other Captain is dead.

One player will have the role of Seska. She wins if Janeway and Chakotay both die -- whether she's alive or not. She has a twice-per-game day kill, but loses a kill every time a Captain dies. This kill can be made secretly and can be used as long as she's alive, including at twilight when she has already been voted up for exile.

The other four or six players will be Voyager crew members loyal to either Janeway or Chakotay. They have no special powers but know the identity of their Captain.

When a Captain dies, all that Captain's loyal crewmembers are thrown in the brig and are out of the game. The game continues until the remaining team either eliminates the assassin or the assassin kills their heir.

It is possible, though unlikely, to end up with the two heirs alive and no one else. In this scenario, the crews have learned to work together as one, just like on the show! It's considered a Happily Ever After victory for everyone except Seska.

The Rules:

The Golden Rule:
This is a game. Everyone who signs up to play must be considerate of each other, never get personal, and focus on having fun. Once the game starts, having signed up is a commitment: inactivity is just as inconsiderate as rude comments.

The Standard Rules:
1. No communication between players outside of the game thread at any time. This includes passing references, jokes, or cases in other games or threads, whether in context or not.
2. If the game thread is locked, do not post. If you are unsure if something is locked, ask the mod by PM.
3. Direct or verbatim quoting of mod-provided information (including QT opening and closing times) is strictly forbidden. Paraphrasing is okay.
4. Actions with instructions that do not specify a game state will be resolved in the order they are received.
5. Players must post once every 24 hours.
6. Do not edit or delete posts, ever. If you need to clarify or correct something, post again.
7. Invisible text, font size less than 10, and spoiler tags are not allowed.
8. Cryptography is not allowed.
9. The time between an exile being reached and a flip being provided is called twilight. All players may continue posting during this time, including the exiled player.
10. Dead players may not post in thread or QT, except their Role QT. An exiled player is not "dead" until a flip has been provided.
11. Personal multimedia, such as video or audio recordings, are not allowed in the game thread.

The Voting Rules:
1. Votes should be in this format: Vote: Playername. Unambigiuous nicknames are acceptable, or any string that uniquely identifies a user. Note that the point of voting is, in fact, unambiguity, and attempting to make it unclear to other players (or, of course, mods) which user you are voting for is very ill-advised.
2. Unvotes should be in this format: unvote or Unvote: Playername.
3. Unvotes are not required if changing your vote from one player to another.
4. You may NOT vote: no exile.
5. Exiles occur when a simple majority (rounded up) of living players is reached. Once reached, an exile cannot be undone.
6. If a majority exile is not reached by the Day's deadline, a plurality exile takes place. Ties will be resolved randomly.

The Rest:
1. Bold, purple text is reserved for the mod. Players may not use it.
2. If you have an issue or problem with the game, please PM the Mod. Do not post complaints in the game thread.
3. Mods make mistakes - please point them out gently. If they can be corrected, they will. If irreversible, they will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. If a mod error disadvantages one faction greatly, the game may be called off.
5. Ask all questions and make all requests directly to the Mod via PM. Questions deemed as "universal" (defined as questions for which the answers should be available to all players) will be requested to be re-posted in the Game Thread and answered there.
6. Players may request prods on other players if they have not posted in 24 hours. Players are subject to replacement or modkill after one prod.
7. All rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, as determined by the mod.
8. Each player will receive their own QT, regardless of role. Don't quote from it.

Deadlines:
1. Days will last seven IRL days.
2. At the conclusion of the day, the thread will be briefly locked, flips will be posted, and the next day will begin.

Role PMs:

Janeway
You are Captain Kathryn Janeway. You win the game if you are alive, Chakotay is dead, and Seska is dead. You have a 1-shot kill you may use at any time. If Chakotay is still alive, then this kill must be done in thread by posting Kill: X. If Chakotay is dead then you may post the same instruction here, in your QT. Use your vote to figure out who is on your side and weed out the rest.

Chakotay
You are Chakotay. You win the game if you are alive, Janeway is dead, and Seska is dead. You have a 1-shot kill you may use at any time. If the Janeway is still alive, then this kill must be done in thread by posting Kill: X. If Janeway is dead then you may post the same instruction here, in your QT. Use your vote to figure out who is on your side and weed out the rest.

Starfleet
You are [Flavor Name] a starfleet officer, loyal to Captain Janeway, aka XXX. She’s the captain of the ship and you’re not going to let Chakotay’s mutiny take her down. You win the game if XXXX is alive, Chakotay is dead, and Seska is dead. If Captain Janeway should die, Chakotay’s thugs would surely throw you in the brig where you wouldn’t be of much use to anyone. When you die you will be revealed to be a crewmember, but not as Starfleet or Maquis. Use your vote to figure out who is on your side and weed out the rest.

Maquis
You are [Flavor Name], a Maquis freedom fighter, loyal to Commander Chakotay, aka XXX. It’s Janeway’s fault we’re stranded out here; she doesn’t deserve to lead the ship. You win the game if XXXX is alive, the Janeway is dead, and Seska is dead. If those Starfleet punks take out Chakotay, they’ll throw all his sympathizers in the brig where you won’t be of much use to anyone. When you die you will be revealed to be a crewmember, but not as Starfleet or Maquis. Use your vote to figure out who is on your side and weed out the rest.

Seska
You are Seska, a Cardassian spy who ended up here by accident. You want Janeway, Chakotay, and all of them to suffer while you start a new life in the Delta Quadrant. You have kill(s) you may use at any time during the game including at the time of your death. The number of kills you have is always equal to the number of Captains currently alive in the game. If one Captain dies, you will lose one of your kills. No player is immune to kills. You win the game if Janeway and Chakotay are both dead.. You don't have to be alive to win. You also win the game if all other crewmembers die and only you and both Captains are alive. Use your vote and kills to take Voyager down.

It's sort of multiball. Sort of multitown? Idk, it looked interesting. I don't know if we've run any assassin in the palace variants here before.

Two questions:

Will there be an extended twilight?

Are the two teams guaranteed to be even?

Will there be an extended twilight?

Depends on who's alive, but generally yes. Twilight will be long enough to give people with shots a reasonable opportunity to take them.

Quote
Are the two teams guaranteed to be even?

Yes. Crewmembers will be 2/2 or 3/3. The game will not launch with 8 players.

Ok! PMs are out. Please confirm participation in your QT.

Since this setup has no shared QTs and no nights, we can start Day 1 as soon as everyone confirms.

“We're alone in an uncharted part of the galaxy. We have already made some friends here, and some enemies,” Janeway says. “We have no idea of the dangers we're going to face, but one thing is clear. Both crews are going to have to work together if we're to survive. That's why Commander Chakotay and I have agreed that this should be one crew. A Starfleet crew. And as the only Starfleet vessel assigned to the Delta Quadrant, we'll continue to follow our directive to seek out new worlds and explore space. But our primary goal is clear. Even at maximum speeds, it would take seventy five years to reach the Federation, but I'm not willing to settle for that. There's another entity like the Caretaker out there somewhere who has the ability to get us there a lot faster. We'll be looking for her, and we'll be looking for wormholes, spatial rifts, or new technologies to help us. Somewhere along this journey, we'll find a way back. Mister Paris, set a course for home.”

But just days after her little speech, dissatisfaction among the crew is growing. Torres and Neelix don’t like following Starfleet orders and protocol. Tuvok and Kim don’t like having to work with and take orders from former criminals. And Seska... Seska just seems mad at everyone.

It’s gonna be a long journey home.

Day 1 Begins

With seven alive, it takes four or a deadline plurality to exile.

The day ends at 8:00 am forum time on Tuesday, August 11.

"Tuvok, can I ask for your honest counsel?" Janeway asks as she sips coffee in her ready room.

"Always, Captain," the Vulcan replies.

"Are we doing the right thing, trusting the Maquis. Can they ever be part of this crew?"

"The alternative would be to throw them in the brig for 75 years," Tuvok says. "That is obviously not an ideal outcome. That said, I am not ruling it out as a possibility."

I have been trying to figure out if there could be a good strategy of claiming. i.e. what would happen if one person claimed. Though I think the need for others on same team to vote for (otherwise, might be too obvious) would just muddy possibilities.

In the meantime, let’s get to finding Seska.

Joseph said he was the SK....maybe sometimes he’s not just goofing

Vote: Joseph

The probability that he claims this is equal wether he is or is not Seska.  Not a convincing argument

Has Joseph actually been the SK in a game he's claimed like this way?

I've got an idea.

If we all claim our alliance, there will be 3 in one group and 4 in the other. Whatever group has 4 will have a lying Seska.

I have been trying to figure out if there could be a good strategy of claiming. i.e. what would happen if one person claimed. Though I think the need for others on same team to vote for (otherwise, might be too obvious) would just muddy possibilities.
I feel like a (some) word (words) are missing here; I don't know what you're saying

Claiming is a bad plan. If we do catch Seska it will be an agonizing three on three . If we don't, one group can just exile members of the other group until they hit the Captain. And there's a 50/50 chance that's your group, whichever group yours is.

Also Seska has 2 kills, so if we're too obvious about things  they could just kill both the leaders and win...

Well, lets see...if someone claims their alliance, then at least one, and maybe two, other members of your team know who you are.

One downside is that Seska and the other alliance can narrow down their vig pool.  But the upshot is the team can start working together.

Worth it or no?

Ha. Just that if Person A claims starfleet, then Person B (who is also starfleet), might still want to vote for Person A in order to not out themselves (similarly Person C not starfleet, might not vote). So not sure if we really gain anything usefull.

Frankly, not sure how to proceed, but a still trying to go come up with something clever.

"Chakotay, I've been talking to some of our old shipmates. They're not happy here," B'elanna says to Chakotay in the corridor, nervously looking around for Starfleet eavesdroppers. "Most of them joined the Maquis to get AWAY from Starfleet. And they're eager to get back to the fight, but Janeway doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry. Last week we diverted from our course home to study a Class J Nebula."

"I know it's a hard adjustment Be'lanna. You can tell them that I've been thinking about this myself, and when it's time to make a move I'll let them know. I'm still hoping we can all make this work peacefully."

"Well good luck. All getting along peacefully isn't exactly what the Maquis are known for."

By the way, the optimal play is to put people at X-1 and make them say "Kill: X" to prove they're guards. No one wants guards dead, they provide a way to exile the SK and could very well be on your side.

There's also some shenanigans with softclaiming and getting people into a side.

But overall you played well by saying nothing and voting randomly. It's almost correct to just vote literally everyone at all times.

Which kinda sucks since I'm a vote sponge.

But you guys were right so how can I blame you, right?

Hmm, if neither are captain, the third option is Joseph, and then pubby. I think both captains would be on the wagon.

If one is, GG other team, if both are, then I'm the luckiest man in the world.

Janeway and Chakotay are in the ready room, discussing how the Maquis crew is adjusting.

"You know who really seems to be having a hard time fitting in is that Seska person!"  Janeway says. She refuses to even go to the doctor for her routine physical."

"Oh Seska has always been cagey about medical examinations," Chakotay says.

Suddenly the screen lights up, showing the face of the Emergency Medical Hologram, the ship's only doctor.

"Oh good, you're both here. Since Seska refused to come in I took the liberty of scanning her covertly using the ship's sensors. I believe she's not a Bajoran at all, she's Cardassian."

Suddenly the comm chirps.

"Kim to Janeway. I have arrested Lt. Seska for shooting two other crewmembers."

"I tried to give you a chance," Janeway says to Chakotay, pointing a phaser rifle at him. "I offered to let you become a part of my crew. But one of your people just killed B'elanna Torres and Tuvok, one of my oldest friends and most trusted advisors. I want you and your people off my ship."

"I'll see you in hell first!" Chakotay says, lunging at Janeway. She fires the weapon but a split second too late, it misses Chakotay and shoots Harry Kim, vaporizing him.

The captain is so shocked she drops the phaser rifle, and Chakotay doesn't miss a chance to pick it up.

"Sorry Kathryn. I wish we could have made this work too. But don't worry, I'll get your crew home." He fires.

pubby has been killed. He was Captain Kathryn Janeway.
Her crew members, Harry Kim (Joseph2302) and Tuvok (shraeye) preceded her in death.

The Maquis team of Chakotay (scolapasta), B'elanna Torres (WestCoastDidds), and Neelix (Glooble) wins the game!

Thanks for playing guys. I suspected this game might go fast; I did not expect it to go quite this fast. I think the setup is interesting but I'm not sure how much fun it really is.

It definitely felt like bullets started flying! But a good time.

And pubby, it’s always good to see you!

If pubby hadn’t shot Joseph, I wonder how long it would have lasted. I don’t know that Scola would be quick to decide.

This was amazing! Again, again, I wanna be something else, assassin's so stressful in those 5 minutes I had to shoot at people.

I think this setup is super great for drunk mafia

Yesssss

It definitely felt like bullets started flying! But a good time.

I got to shoot you! My plan was to oppose you, and if that got me flak then you were a captain. I was very wrong though.

There is a problem with this setup, which is mostly that if I was exiled when I was away, I couldn't shoot in reaction. It's a bit too time sensitive for this format, I'd say. But that's why I'd love to try it in drunk mafia.

If pubby hadn’t shot Joseph, I wonder how long it would have lasted. I don’t know that Scola would be quick to decide.

Having me and pubby with power does that to a game.

Yeah, that made D2 pretty easy for me. I did have to wait, to make sure it wasn't some sort of bluff.

Fun game, even if short.

Yeah I'm sorry it was so short. I feel like we mostly just got really lucky.

You did read me correctly though. And by "you", I mean shraeye. I'm not sure why you were voting me...?

I think that you have killed me far more than you have killed anyone else!

Not that you had a ton of choices, and I kind of needed to you kill me to keep Scola safe (thus the hammer), but STILL

Yeah, it's good you did hammer, because I was debating it, which meant MiX probably would've killed me instead.

Hmm...shraeye might tie that.

Obviously I should've reread, I think I could've gotten pubby with better reading, but cutting the day short AND being right definitely makes it hard for arsonist.

I don't know...I was pretty set on shraeye and Didds. Well, maybe I would've, which definitely is worse than the result we got.

You’ve killed shraeye more than me? Wow...stone cold, dude, stone cold.  I’m glad you thought I was a captain! It has to be my inherent leadership and ability to be fun at parties

You can get me to program just about anything if you intend to use it.

I've nearly finished implementing this, but I've realised a couple of things that don't make sense to me.

For simplicity I refer to the PRs as Kings and the Assassin.

While all 3 PRs remain alive, and the Assassin still has both shots, a King using their kill is an instaloss. No matter what else happens, they'll be shot by the Assassin. The only reason they would use it is to kingmake if they know they're going to lose. So why even allow this option? Wouldn't it be better to only allow a King to kill once another PR has been eliminated?

How important is Twilight? I don't see the need to allow the Kings to use their shots during the "Assassination" phase (that is, the time after the Assassin is killed or exiled when they are able to use their shots), as doing so would simply allow the Assassin to make more-informed shots. Should an exiled King be allowed to make a shot during their own Twilight? If so, they may as well have an Assassination phase of their own in which they can use their shot to turn the tables in the same way an Assassin can. I'm pretty sure this is not the intent.

The game state after an Assassin is killed but misses both shots seems strange. If the teams are equal in size, exiling a King is impossible, although nobody knows whether it's possible. I'm trying to wrap my head around whether there's anything to be done here other than just taking shots based on what has already happened. Is it possible to Kinghunt without doing more harm than good to your own King's (or self's) secrecy? Maybe you can argue that a majority of eliminated Guards seemed to be protecting the one person, and therefore your team is now the majority and should lynch that person. Of course, if you're right and your team gets on board, that person will take a shot before the hammer, so your King needs to decide how likely it is that you're right and how likely it is to result in a correct shot. So maybe there's something there.
If something like this doesn't happen, though, then it comes down to the shots. If the Kings have more than 50% likelihood of hitting their target, then the first to shoot has the advantage (which is not good in standard games but might be okay in Party games?). If it's less than 50%, then both will just wait until deadline and see what happens. So maybe it's better to just have them shoot simultaneously and be done with it?
