Title: Weekly Design Hall of Fame
Post by: Doom_Shark on November 19, 2018, 03:15:01 am
Welcome to the Hall of Fame for the Weekly Design Contest. Each contest's winners and runners up will be shown, along with the challenge. There may be occasional delays in updates due to my school, but I promise I'll get around to it eventually. Edit: Many thanks to Spineflu for taking over and keeping this up to date

Challenge #1: Design a Treasure - Reaction
Winner: Ransom by LostPhoenix. Runner Up: Molten Gold by Chappy7.

Challenge #2: Simple and Elegant Design a card with 12 words or less on it (name, numbers, types, etc. do not count).
Winner: Backstreet by faust. Runner Up: Secluded Village by Doom_Shark.

Challenge #3: Design a Reserve card with a call trigger that is distinct from any other
Winner: Wine Cellar by ConMan. Runners Up: City Founders by Erick648 and Bailey by fragasnap
(https://i.imgur.com/JHzWp07.png) (https://i.imgur.com/G9sYObE.png) (https://i.imgur.com/jEi1bVV.jpg)

Challenge #4: Design a card with a variable cost.
Winner: Rare Earth by Tejayes. Runners Up: Sunken Village by Kudasai, Outskirts by Asper, and Royal Retreat by Aquila.

Challenge #5: This is a two-fold challenge. First, create a new use for the standard coin tokens used for Coffers and Villagers. Give it a name, describe when you can spend these tokens, and describe what happens when each token is spent. Second, create at least one card (up to three) that allows for gaining these tokens. (The format for presenting this and the next challenge will be slightly different from the rest due to the nature of the challenge)
Winner: VioletCLM's Mutineers
Mutineers may be spent during your Action phase at any time when you might spend an action instead, i.e. when no cards are currently resolving. Spending a Mutineer discards a card from your hand. At the end of the game, each unspent Mutineer is worth -1VP.

Didn't notice until now that some of our treasure reactions had the blue and gold colors inversed.  Haha kinda looks funny when they're right next to each other like that.

Challenge # 15: Design a new Basic card, which can be added to the game independently of any expansions. This may be a new Supply pile, a card for the player’s starting deck or even a totally new mechanic.
Winner: Aquila's Tasks
A pile of landscape cards; they all cost $2, but don't use up a buy. When you buy one, you put it in front of you; it has an Objective for you to meet, and as soon as you do, you get a Reward and put the card back in the pile. No need to shuffle the pile, players can freely look through it and pick one. Only one Task allowed at once. [...] probably 2 of each in the pile?

The Tarnished Cards replace the Curse cards in a game using a card with the subtype "Tarnisher" (or any time you want to replace the curses). There are 5 different Tarnished cards, and there are 10 of each. They are set up exactly like the Ruins pile.

Winner: Actor by belugawhale. Runner up: Scraps of Cloth by wittyhowlard
(https://i.imgur.com/pVqqK4R.png) (https://i.imgur.com/pmUML0Q.jpg)

Challenge #28: Design a new card type.
Winner: Traitor type by Commodore Chuckles. Runner up: Work type by Fragasnap
Traitor cards are cards that your opponents can play from your hand during their turn. They would ideally have different backs similar to Stash. When an opponent plays one of your Traitors, the Traitor is set on the table and then put back in your hand during their Cleanup phase. You play the Traitors in your Action phase, and you may play any number of Traitors from any number of opponents' hands in a single phase. You may look at a Traitor from your opponents' hand and then choose not to play it.

Work Type (https://shardofhonor.github.io/dominion-card-generator/index.html?title=&description=-1%20Work-%0AWhen%20you%20work%20this%2C%20&type=Work&credit=&creator=&price=&preview=&type2=&color2split=1&boldkeys=Work-&picture-x=0&picture-y=0&picture-zoom=1&picture=&expansion=&custom-icon=&c0.0=1.5&c0.1=0.7&c0.2=0.5&color1=0&size=0)
Work cards remain in play each Clean-Up until they have been worked sufficiently as indicated by the Work card. During Clean-Up, a card with "-3 Work-" on it is only discarded if it has been worked 3 times.
During your Action phase whenever you could play an Action, if you have any Work cards in play that have not met their Work count, you may "Work" that card by spending a +action and placing a Work token onto the card. You may work any number of work cards as much as you want in a turn (so long as you have +actions to spend and the card can take more work). Work tokens remain on the card until is discarded during a Clean-Up phase.

CHALLENGE #31 - FEELING VULNERABLE

Design a Duration card that creates some sort of vulnerability to you while it is in play. I'll leave the term "vulnerability" mostly up to your interpretation, but you can think of it along the lines of the following:

(1) Something that alters the game in a way that might not help you or may help your opponents
(2) Something that effects you negatively
(3) Something that effects your opponents positively

Winner: Motherly Witch (auth: MeNowDealWithIt)
Runner up: Novice (auth: segura)

Challenge #32: Make me skip chapel!

Basically, in a kingdom with the card (-shaped object) you design for this contest, and chapel, make it frequently a viable strategy never to buy a chapel.

Winner: split pile — Pendulum / Dowser (auth: King Leon)
Runner Up: Apse Chapel (auth: scolapasta)
and a reminder what Worshippers are for:
Quote
At the start of your Clean-up phase, you may remove tokens from this to trash a card from your hand or one you have in play for each token removed.

Challenge #33: Just react!
Create a pure Reaction card.

Winner: Economist (auth: Chappy7)
Runner Up: Design (auth: Fragasnap)

Create a card that is at least one of Action, Treasure, Reaction, or Night with no fixed or conditional Vanilla++ effects.
  • Vanilla++ effects are: +Cards, +Actions, +Buys, +$, +Potion, +VP, +Coffers, and +Villagers.
  • "Drawing cards" per a condition and putting cards into your hand can be likened to +Cards, but is fine (like Watchtower and Envoy).
  • Playing other cards is often likened to +Actions, but is fine (like Throne Room)
  • Treasures that produce $ count as Vanilla++ effects and will be disqualified (Counterfeit produces $1 and would be disqualified, Horn of Plenty produces $0 and would not be)
  • Being a Victory card is fine, but it still must have an Action\Treasure\Reaction\Night effect (like Island and Tunnel).
  • On-gain\on-buy effects that confer Vanilla++ effects still disqualify the card.
  • If you are making a card that is modified by other random cards (like Young Witch, Black Market, or Band of Misfits), it is fine that the other random cards might have Vanilla++ effects.
  • Fate cards that use random Boons are fine.
  • Use of Artifacts is fine, but they still must confer no Vanilla++ effects.
  • If you are making a Split pile or Traveller, every card involved must have no Vanilla++ effects.
  • A card with "Choose X" options still must have no Vanilla++ effects (Steward, Count, and Charm would be disqualified)
  • A Vanilla++ effect that scales on a condition may be used (like Philosopher's Stone, or Harvest)

Winner: Consul (auth: anordinaryman)

Runner Up: Crime Lord (auth: naitchman)

CHALLENGE #35 - A Thematic Curser

I'd like to call attention to a particular line in the wiki article on curser wiki article (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Curser (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Curser)):
Quote
It can be argued that the main curser from each early expansion closely represents the expansion's theme
(bold emphasis is mine). One of my favorite parts of the early expansions (up to Hinterlands) was how the curser really tied the themes and motifs of that expansion together. Mountebank is a great example since it follows both of Prosperity’s themes: Treasures, and Big-ness (7-cost cards, Colonies, in Mountebanks's cases a big curser that gives out 2 pieces of junk). I also how players can be protected against it to limit its power. Familiar also fits both themes: action-chains and Potions (which is a brilliant mechanic to prevent easily over-loading on it. Again, this limits its power). Both of these cursers really belong in the expansion they are in, and they both bring the entire expansion together.

For this challenge, I am hoping you to pick an expansion, and design a curser for it that *really* fits that expansion. Ideally, if the expansion has multiple themes/motifs, your curser should involve at least 2 of those themes. You may pick ANY existing expansion, even early ones. You may even pick the “expansion” of promotional cards. I think in promotional cards there are some subtle motifs. For example, swinginess and oddness that doesn’t normally fit in Dominion (black market, stash) and also self-synergy (Sauna/Avanta and Governor both have self-synergy). You are welcome to pick some of the more minor themes of an expansion, for example, Intrigue also has a minor self-synergy motif (Nobles uses both choices to build a +cards/+action draw engine on its own, and Minion uses both choices to have a full-engine of $ and draw and minor attack.)

Winner: Parade (auth: segura)

Runner up: Landlord (auth: NoMoreFun)

The new contest is about doing a non-conventional junker, i.e. it should not distribute Curses or Ruins unconditionally. You could do a Copper junker or come up with a new type of junk. Landscape cards are also OK.

Winner: Gremlin (auth: faust)
Runner up: Lancer (auth: Kudasai)

Design a card or card-shaped object that comes with an existing Heirloom.

So the card should include the Heirloom in the normal way, replacing a starting Copper. Of course there should be some mechanical reason for having it come with the Heirloom.

Winner: Kelpie (auth: mail-mi)

Create a Village.

The only rule is that the card must itself provide some source of extra actions. So Throne Room variants and Lost Arts wouldn't count, but Barracks would. Also cards that give Villagers wouldn’t count unless the card also gave some source of extra actions. I will comment on submissions that don't count (I'm bad at remembering to +1 things).

Winner: Neighboring Village (auth: Aquila)

Contest #39: a Duration card.
A very open book. But READ THIS: you know why this contest is here, we're seeing 2 new promo Durations (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=19779.msg806927#msg806927) come to the game. I will favour designs that could convincingly be promos. Cover new mechanical territory if you can, and don't be afraid of complexity as this isn't going to be a judging factor. The less like similar to any official card, the better. Use other (card shaped) components in your design if you like.
Think of things that will actually add to the game, and avoid the design mistakes of things like Stash.

Winner: Wonder (auth: Kudasai)

CHALLENGE #40 - KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE!!!

This weeks challenge comes in two parts, which will be judged roughly 50/50, but on different judging criteria:

(1) Design a card shaped thing that gains Prizes. Criteria: Balance
Prizes are some of the best cards in Dominion, so designing a card that gains them has to be carefully thought out and balanced. Timing considerations and opportunity cost are important here.

(2) Design a card that is a Prize. Criteria: Creativity
If coming up with a Prize gainer is stressing you out, this should be your chance to unwind, pull out all the stops, try some crazy ideas and most importantly have fun. Prizes offer a lot of design flexibility as they don't take up room in the Kingdom, can't be abused in multiples, and don't really matter if they are not always useful. With that in mind, I will judge cards better that would have some of these issues if they were in the Supply (i.e. cards that only really would work as a Prize). I would like to see Prizes that fill any niches the other official Prizes don't touch on. If this is proving too difficult, overlap is perfectly fine as long as the Prize has a different play style. As with Aquila, I'm very partial to existing mechanics being used or meshed together in ways that are new and interesting.

We're going to take aim at one of the more common complaints of Dominion:

CHALLENGE #41 - DOMINION IS NOT SOLITAIRE
Design a card or card-shaped thing that has non-attack player interaction baked into the mechanics of the card/card-shaped thing. I'd prefer original ideas of player interaction, so simply making a new artifact isn't likely to win this contest, but who knows, maybe if the interaction is interesting enough, it could win!

CHALLENGE #42 - MONOGAINER

A monogainer is a card-shaped thing that gains cards from exactly one named pile. Examples of monogainers are: Bureaucrat (gains Silver), Baron (gains Estate), Rats (gains Rats), Dominate (gains Province), Pillage (gains Spoils), and Tormentor (gains Imp). Cards that are not monogainers include: Workshop, Tournament, Black Market, Beggar, Count, and Rebuild, for these cards can gain multiple cards with different names.

The goal of this challenge is to design a monogainer. If needed, you may also design the card your monogainer gains.

The gained card must be of a single name and fixed per-game, but I will allow cards where the gained pile is randomly chosen at setup (a la Young WItch banes).

Challenge #43: Design a card (or card-shaped thing) that involves revealing your hand

Acceptable submissions may require you to reveal your hand (such as Shanty Town, Menagerie, City Quarter, or Grand Castle) or your opponents reveal their hand (such as Pillage).  I will also accept cards with "or reveals they can't" or similar clauses so long as they require revealing ones entire hand (such as Bureaucrat, Cutpurse, or Rats).  Cards that require revealing only one card from your hand (such as Gladiator, Encampment, or Young Witch) will not be accepted.

Contest #44: Extra! Extra!
There are only 4 cards that give extra turns so far (Possession, Outpost, Mission, and Fleet). Design another card that gives an extra turn. Remember to word it so you can't get infinite turns. In addition, remember that extra turns can be very powerful. Think about how you will limit the turn (just like the official cards do) to balance this.

Contest 45: Unruin the Library
Make a card that gives a vanilla terminal +1 Card

Whenever anyone tries to buff a fan card by adding +1 Card, it's always pointed out what an awkward bonus this is. The prospect of drawing a single dead Action card is awful, and even if you have spare Actions, you don't actually increase your handsize, so it never feels good.

Your challenge is to make this fun! Basically, the first line of your card should be a vanilla "+1 Card" and there should not be any vanilla +Actions or +Villagers below it. Other vanilla bonuses, such as +$, are fine. *Conditional* +Cards, +Actions or +Villagers are allowed. Also, it should be played *only* in the Action Phase.

Challenge #46: But it wasn't even your turn!

Design a card (shaped thing) that can do one of the following things on another players turn:
  • Increase your VP (either with VP chips, an alt-VP formula, or other means) and/or decrease the VP of other players
  • Give you a say in when the game ends (eg it can gain a card, prevent gains, return a card to the supply, etc.)

The idea behind this challenge is cards that change the endgame so that players need to think about more than their own deck's capacity to gain a VP lead and end the game, because other players have cards that will change the VP balance, or it might not be up to them whether the game is going to end on a given turn. Cards which add a level of complexity to the endgame, while still being fun and fair, will have the best chance of winning.

Contest #47: an Event that uses an Artifact.

This feels like a wide space of opportunity to me. You have lots of ways to go, so find something that really shines. If you want to use one of the official Artifacts...I will judge it based on games with the official card it's attached to also included, which I can't say will go too well as the functionality of that original card is interfered with. Basically, go for something new.

All submissions must have the Curse type and be worth negative VP. Cards that award -VP tokens or something similar aren't justified in having the Curse type (like Monument isn't a Victory card)
Submissions shouldn't be just an undercosted card with a VP penalty, see rinkworks' article on that. Try and come up with an interesting way to make it work.

Contest #55: For You and Your Kin
Firstly, I'm interested in a Christmas/Holiday theme for the cards. Presents, nativity, Santa, winter wonderland, Hanukkah etc. This theme idea actually came first to me and the mechanic later, so I'm bringing it up first.

The mechanic: The card (shaped thing) should do something positive for your other players at some point, and that effect shouldn't be buried in a negative effect (eg Margrave wouldn't count). A non-attack interaction, but in a direct way (like Council Room or Embassy) rather than in an indirect way (like City).

Chllange 61: Create a new simple mechanic

So I've always found it fun when new mechanics are introduced into Dominion, however, I hate having to deal with the setup (looking at you adventures). My favorite are the mechanics that are self contained within the card itself.

For this challenge create a new simple mechanic that can be used on different cards. Also provide some cards that can use this mechanic (at least 3 but no more than 10). I will be judging more on the mechanic than on the cards themselves (unbalanced, not priced right, etc.); they are more a way to showcase what the mechanic could add to the game.

By simple mechanic I mean the mechanic must have no extra setup (beyond the pile itself) - No tokens, Mats, extra piles/cards that have to be pulled from the box (even if they are exclusive to that pile like Hermit, Urchin, Young Witch, travelers, or Artifacts etc.), or cards to replace starting deck (Heirlooms/Shelters). Having a specific order (like split piles) or random order (knights, castles) is okay. Also sideways cards are okay (even though you technically have to pull out one more kingdom pile when you draw it). New types of cards are allowed as long as they don't have extra setup.

Winner: Card Costs (auth: Aquila)

Quote
The card cost, spending the cards you have in your hand to buy things. Hopefully it's self-explanatory so as to pass the simple test! Just in case it isn't...

The card symbol signifies that you need to have certain cards in your hand to afford the bought thing, and the instructions will signify what exactly. You'd only ever have 1 card symbol in the cost, even if you make several hand setups possible. It joins debt and Potion as a different type of cost.

Runner up: Workers (auth: D782802859)
Quote
Workers are piles of cards with 5 cards in them each, and are another type of card-shaped thing, along with events, projects, and landmarks, and are randomized with them.

When you buy a copy of a Worker, it goes in front of you. At any point during your action phase, you can tap, or turn sideways, a worker to receive the effect on the card.

You can only tap a worker once per turn, even if it is untapped. During the Cleanup phase, you return all tapped Workers to their pile.

Runner Up: Single Cards (auth: NoMoreFun)

I usually do a new post every 5 contests but that last one was pretty long.

Contest #62: a card that has +1 Buy and uses it well

They're relatively scarce in the official game, so there's plenty that can be done, plenty of effects that need a +buy to work. Make this +Buy the core focus of your design; something like Margrave isn't going to win, but Goons could. Forum would count, and it might do well too. Any card-shaped thing will qualify.

Winner: Savings (auth: X-tra)

CONTEST #64: MAKE IT COUNT
This weeks contest: Design a card that has a once per turn effect. No Projects, Landmarks, Events or Artifacts please. The effect can encompass the whole card text or just be a part of it. Split piles and Travelers (if you for some reason hate me) are both fine. The card does not specifically have to say "once per turn", but should limit it's use in one way or another.

Contest 74: A lovely pair of coconuts.

Not everyone trades in coins. On Tropical Islands, or in Savage Lands or in times of hyperinflation and hunger when bread is more valuable than rubies, who knows what might be the measure of wealth instead; anything from exotic birds eggs to hot skewered rats. Your challenge is to come up with a Treasure which isn't standard currency but is instead a barterable good of some kind.

CHALLENGE #76: All That Glitters
Every expansion has one, and now it's our turn. Design a Gold-gainer. The card may gain a Gold unconditionally (like Bandit), conditionally (like Explorer), or optionally (like Courtier), but it must be able to gain Gold specifically. Abilities like "gain a card costing up to $6," "gain a Treasure," or "Exile a Gold from the supply" would not qualify.

Challenge #77 - You're just my type!

I like cards that do things with other cards - specifically naming a type to interact with so that's what we'll be looking for this time! Design a card that interacts with card types. The card may reveal (like Courtier or Magpie), gain (like Ironworks), discard (like Beggar or Crop Rotation), trash (like Forager or Catapult), or something else for a benefit. Landscape-shaped things qualify too. As long as there is a dependence on another card's type, we're good to go. Abilities that name a specific card would not qualify (Curse is the exception to this though).

Contest #78 - Design a card/landscape that uses Trinkets

Your goal is to design a card or landscape that gives Trinkets (above), a non-supply junk card variation on spoils.
Unless you say otherwise, I'm going to assume there's 30 Trinkets in the pile (like horses) - if your card wants there to be "as many as curses" or some other scaling number, whatever, include that in your post.
It doesn't have to be a junking attack - it can be like, a Cache or Banquet variant, or something entirely else, that's totally fine.

Contest #79: Different strokes for different folks

This is a more open ended one - design a card (shaped thing) that encourages players to pursue different strategies during the game. The card may explicitly distinguish between players (eg a split Landmark, or something that changes setup rules to give different starting decks). It could also be a card that more subtly creates more than one optimal strategy for the board, or gives different players different tools to work with (Black Market and Tournament), or encourages you to pursue unique cards (Gladiator), or involves competition for a single resource (Mountain Pass).

With difference baked into the card, balance, or at least the ability for players on either side of the inequality to win the game, will be more important than usual.

Similarly a card that does this differentiation solely by being very political (eg attacks that only affect one other player you choose), would fit the criteria, but probably wouldn't do very well.

All submissions are "eligible"; just think holistically about how a Dominion game involving your card (shaped thing)(s) would play out. If there is more than one "optimal strategy", or if players are actively trying to avoid doing the same thing as each other, then you have done well.

Contest #81 - A Fine Line

Design a card/card-shaped thing that has a dividing line, where the effect under the line is unique. Reactions almost always have them, but there are other types of things you can do with them too: on-trash, on-gain, reserve, setup, while-in-play, or in-games-using-this effects just to name a few. Traveler lines and the use of other non-supply piles are fine, but below-the-line effects similar to "when you discard this from play, you may exchange this for an X" are not considered to be unique for the purposes of this contest, even if X isn't gained by any official card in this way. So, out of the official travelers, Page would not satisfy these rules but Peasant would due to Teacher. Double-line (or more) cards are fine, as long as at least one of the below-the-line effects are unique.

Contest #86: Not just 4/3 or 5/2

Design a card or card-shaped object that can in some way affect opening splits. This could be a card with an on-gain effect that can draw or sift cards (Cavalry, Night Watchman, Den of Sin, Doctor), or one that affects setup in some way (Baker, Pooka), or anything else, as long as it allows you to get an opening split other than 4/3 or 5/2.

Weekly Card Contest 91: If Dominion is so good why didn't they make a Dominion Two?

This week's challenge is relatively simple: the card-shaped-thing you submit must have the number two on it somewhere, whether in the cost or in the actual text. Both expressions with the numeral "2", such as "+2 Cards", and with "two" spelled out, such as "Trash two cards from your hand", are acceptable.

Contest #94:

Design a card-shaped thing that can eat (i.e., trash) Action cards other than copies of itself from play. (It's fine if it can also trash copies of itself, but it can't only trash those, so Urchin, Death Cart, or Tragic Hero wouldn't qualify.)

Afaik, the only official cards that do this are Improve and Bonfire. A fan-made submission that would qualify is Ritual Sword (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=18987.msg852047#msg852047).

Thanks for the judging! I didn't necessarily expect to win this based on initial reactions. Good catch also about buying multiple of these on the same turn; playtesting would need to show whether that's overpowered, but if so, it can be fixed rather easily with a "once per turn" clause.

Anyways... you've been waiting too long for the next challenge already!

Contest #97: A token effort

Create a submission that allows you to trade one set of tokens for another in some fashion. VP for coffers, Debt for Villagers, maybe even replace an Embargo token by a +Action token - anything goes so long as you have a different token in the place where there was previously another token after using the ability.

Contest #98: Feeling sideways
Some mechanics that originally felt wild and exotic became "normal" as we got used to them. For example, Durations and Events freely appear in expansions -- they seem almost as standard as Action cards now! Let's imagine a hypothetical world where all the sideways cards were introduced earlier on (say in the original Game), such that they are a standard "part of Dominion."

Design an Event, Landmark, State, Project, Artifact, or Way for an existing expansion that does not currently have that type of sideways card in it.

Judging Criteria for the card-shaped thing:
  • It is well-balanced and fun.
  • It "fits" the expansion well. Acknowledging the main-theme and perhaps sub-themes for the expansion. For example, Seaside has sub-themes of top-of deck, your later turns, mats, condition gold-gaining, and more.
  • It "fits" Dominion well -- following the design principles of Donald X.
  • There is a meaningful reason for it to be that particularly side-wise card-shaped thing.

Yay, that's satisfying! The Latin for eagle is Aquila~.
Thanks anordinaryman, that was an interesting contest!

We're almost at contest 100, and we're at a somewhat significant time of year, so I propose something big (and challenging to judge):

Contest #99: Free For All
Just one restriction: no new mechanics. Go nuts; put together the best design you can think of! Sift through all the options and select something you know works. I will attempt to keep an open mind towards different audiences, and I anticipate a very big shortlist of potential runners-up. To choose a winner I guess may involve some personal preference if things are really close.

No bonus points for holiday theme by the way, but a narrow margin may be decided by relevance of theme to the mechanics. I will heavily favour mechanical balance and interest however.

Contest #100: Fun with Non-Supply Cards

Create a card-shaped thing that interacts with an existing (i.e., official) non-Supply card. It can be any type of card-shaped thing and can interact in any way whatsoever, big or small, with any existing non-Supply card (or more than one). Please name or show the existing non-Supply card and describe the interaction. Feel free to wander – please do not focus too much on the contest criteria.

As long as there is any interaction whatsoever, very little attention will be paid in the judging to the quality or degree of the of interaction – I prefer flexible creativity to adherence to restrictions. While I believe that personal preference is always a substantial factor in judging these contests, I will try to focus on balance, playability and, most of all, fun. Also, just a hint, but certainly not necessary to win, I tend to enjoy cards that honor an overall theme or story.

Good luck to everyone!  Have a happy and safe 2021!

(I almost went with a 2020-themed contest, but didn’t really want to look at 100 cards featuring Ruins, Rats and Curses.)

Thanks for all the kind words, spheremonk. I'm glad you liked my card.

Without any further ado:
Contest #101: "You may turn your Journey token over."

Design a card (or card shaped thing, it doesn't have to be a Kingdom card) that uses "you may turn your Journey token over." Of course, it should do something that prevents it from being effectively the same as a choose one; it could make you vulnerable while the Journey token is in a given state a la Kudasai's Lancers (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=18987.msg805554#msg805554), for example.

Another note, please do not submit a card that you've previously posted on the forums, such as the aforementioned Lancers, even if you posted it as a submission to a previous WDC. I tend to be biased in favor of new cards/cards I haven't already seen, and I want to avoid that as much as I can.

My judging criteria will focus on balance, playability, fun, and creativity.

P.S. Edit: Any submissions that would be better suited as a "choose one:" will be disqualified (don't worry, I'll let you know ASAP if your submission won't work).

P.P.S. Edit: A couple of things I should've mentioned earlier:
1. Your submission doesn't necessarily have to say "you may turn your Journey token over" word for word, it just has to optionally allow you to turn it over. It can even be conditional if you want.
2. The effect of turning your Journey token over doesn't necessarily have to be on-play. It could be an on-call effect on a Reserve card, or a Reaction effect, whatever you want (within reason).

P.P.P.S. Edit: Some further clarifications:
If the condition for turning your Journey token over is something passive like "if you have 5 or more Actions in play" or when a specific event occurs, then turning your Journey token at that point has to be optional, even if triggering that specific event or meeting that condition is optional to begin with.
Reaction cards that flip your Journey token over as part of its Reaction automatically qualify (unless it's a mandatory Reaction like Patron's) since revealing it is optional. Same with calling Reserve cards.

Current examples include but are not necessarily limited to: Basilica, Diadem, Pageant, Storyteller, and Wine Merchant.  Overpay effects count, which adds Doctor, Herald, Masterpiece, and Stonemason to the list.  Free "terminal" Events that can be bought multiple times like Delay are a unique way to "spend" your Buys.  Donald X. once talked about an old Diadem variant that was a terminal Action that jumped back up into your hand (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Diadem#Secret_History), which could definitely be counted as "caring about the +Actions you have."  I'll do my best not to discredit any entries.

:'(Weekly Design Contest #103: Snow

Hello everyone! You all had some neat ideas for contests, but today i have a bit of hubris,  and it also happens to be snowing in sweden where i live! Henceforth this weeks contest...

Design a Card Or WELP that interacts with 'snow' (ie, this fanmade card)

Quote
TYPE: Action
Cost: 3$
+1 action
Return this to its pile.
(This is not in the Supply.)
There are a total of of 30 Snow cards in each game.

Snow is a temporary junk card, that goes away when you play it. You may design any sort of card, sideways card, or WELP that interacts with it. Or, if you want, your own mechanic with it.

My judging criteria for submissions:
1: Is this card Fun? (does it change the game in a fun way? Does it introduce interesting strategies? is it fun to play?)
2: Is this card understandable? (is there grammar or spelling errors? Does it condradict itself? Also, remember to have an english version if you post in another language!)

I hope you all have fun this week. The deadline for card submissions is February 5th, UTC 20/ 8 PM. ill try to have my judging up around February 6th.

Edit 1: fixed some formatting issues with snow as per silverspawns suggestions. i blame my jetlag!

Weekly Design Contest #104: Raise the Ceiling

Design a card-shaped thing that has a high skill ceiling, i.e., that is unusually difficult to play optimally.

Since this is not a measurable criterion, I will ultimately decide whether an entry counts, but I intend to be lenient and allow cards even if it's a stretch. If you're not sure how to go about this, here are some examples of categories that would count. (Not trying to be exhaustive.)

  • Cards that reward deck-tracking. This includes Wishing Well, Mystic, Encampment, Catacombs, Herald, Vassal, Doctor, Messenger, Gamble, ...
  • Cards that give you an unusual amount of control over your deck. Cards in this category include Donate, Chapel, Archive, Tactician, and Watchtower.
  • Cards where it's unusually hard to know if you should buy them. This includes Castles and Flag Bearer.
  • Cards that are volatile and can easily ruin your deck if played incorrectly. This includes things like Develop, Procession, Stonemason, or Archive.
  • Cards that transform your deck in unpredictable ways and force you to adapt. Includes Jester and Swindler.
  • Cards that bring the game into a unique state that you rarely get to play (and that isn't trivial). Maybe playing a madman mega turn isn't really harder than regular dominion, but since you get to do it so rarely, it's difficult in practice, and so Hermit and Native Village are in this category. Also Peasant because of Teacher.
  • Cards that give you a lot of choices. Governor and black market are in this category.

Note that I like simple cards, so your best shot to win may be a card that looks innocent on first glance but is secretly tricky, like Archive or Watchtower.

WDC #113: Power Up!

Rules:
  • Design a card that becomes more powerful once a specific trigger (or triggers) is met
  • Official cards that would qualify include City, Paddock, Trade Route, and Forager
  • The activation should be irreversible in most cases (I'll allow for rare exceptions, as is possible with City and Paddock when either Ambassador or Way of the Butterfly is present, or with Forager if there are cards that let you gain from the trash) and not based on transient conditions.  Therefore, cards like Menagerie, Leprechaun, Conspirator, and Shanty Town would not qualify
  • Likewise, cards that rely on the Journey token like Giant or Ranger would not qualify
  • The card should not be trashed or exchanged for a different card.  Therefore, cards like Magic Lamp or Travellers would not qualify.
  • All copies of the card should be activated for all players once the specific trigger is met.  Therefore, cards like Miser, Pirate Ship, Vineyards and Fairgrounds would not qualify.

WDC #116: Make me *less* special

With each new release of a Dominion expansion come new mechanics. And often, the weekly design contests reflect that: "Create a card that gives Villagers"; "Create a new Way."

But there are some mechanics that have gotten less fanfare, in fact there is only 1 official card (or card shaped thing) that uses it:

Examples, though in no way comprehensive (also, please let me know if I'm mistaken and missing some other card that uses the same mechanic)

Masquerade - only official card to involve passing
Werewolf - only official Action-Night card
Prince - only official Action card that costs $8 (not including Peddler that is $8*)
Grand Market - only official card that restricts buying it based on cards in play
Mountain Pass - only official card that involves bidding

This weeks contest is to "de-uniquefy" a unique Dominion mechanics. Please mention the particular mechanic and the official card that uses it in your post.

Weekly Design Contest 117: In the wrong place at the wrong time

This week's challenge is to create a card or card shaped thing that allows players to play cards during non normal times. Any of the following will work:
•Playing non actions during the action phase (for these purposes, the start of your turn is considered your action phase)
•Playing non treasures during the buy phase
•Playing non night cards during the night phase
•Playing cards that normally can't be played at all (such as curses or victory cards)
•Playing cards during other players turns
•Something else that allows cards to be played at a unique time

WDC #118: Short and Sweet!
Design a simple card that uses up to 1 official expansion-specific mechanic.
For this week, I'd like to see some short and simple cards! Here are the guidelines:

・No more than ~20 words, or 5 lines.
For this, I’ll count + amounts (+①, +2 Actions, +1 Coffers) as one word.
・Up to 1 official expansion-specific mechanic (you can also include 0)
I’m not going to list all the expansion-specific mechanics (there are a lot), but for example, we’ve got Debt, Coffers/Villagers, Looters, Night cards, Spirits, Boons, VP tokens… some of these (VP tokens, Coffers) are in multiple expansions, but they are specific to both expansions. Duration cards are not expansion-specific anymore. And as fun as making your own mechanics is, I’d rather not see those for this week.
・Cut the extra stuff!

Weekly Design Contest 119: Triple Threat

When it comes to Dominion, I love the flashy stuff. Take out all the non-Supply things, bring out all the mats, gather all the multi-type cards (this is probably a large part of why I love Nocturne so much :P )
With that being said, there aren't a ton of official cards with many types. Sure a lot of them have 2, but there are significantly less with 3. (only 30?) Let's fix that shall we?

Design a Kingdom Card that uses exactly three types.

Weekly Design Contest 120: The Turn After Next
Design a duration card that has more than a two-turn effect, but that doesn't just stay in play.

Canon examples are Crypt (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Crypt) and Archive (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Archive).
By two-turn effect, I mean avoid the typical duration "now and at the start of your next turn" - at the end of the second turn, it should still be in play and cued up to do a thing.
By "doesn't just stay in play", I mean the Hireling/Champion style "This stays in play." is no-go. If you want to have like a "pay to keep this around" type mechanic, that's fine, but please review how durations do things and word your card appropriately to avoid "bonfire my hireling for invisible hireling effect" situations.

Weekly Design Contest 121: All Things Come to an End
The challenge for the week is as follows:

Design a card-shaped object with the word "end" somewhere in its instructions.

I think this rule is fairly straightforward, but I'll offer some clarifications still:
  • "End" can have any grammatical function you desire; noun or verb is both fine.
  • "End" needs to be its own word in the text; "spend" does not qualify. That said, inflection is fine, so you may use "ends"
  • "End" does not need to appear in the on-play ability, below the line would be fine as well.
  • "End" needs to appear in the actual text body. Just designing a card that is called "Something end" is not enough.
    • that said... if you want to get really nitpicky: It is technically allowed to design two cards, one using "end" in its name, and the other referring to that card. But your design better have a good reason to be called that way if you wish to get a high ranking.

Weekly Design Contest 122: That Other Way of Drawing

Either design a draw-to-X card, or a card that helps activate a draw-to-X engine.

Some extra rules include:
  • Please guys, just make one card, okay? I will not hesitate to say a particular entry does not qualify if I see more than one card in one post. So, no out-of-Supply shenanigans, no Travellers, no split piles...
  • Uh, well, I guess that was the only rule.

First we had a contest on Durations that stayed in play forever. Then we had a contest on durations that stayed in play for more than 2 turns, but not forever. What's the logical follow-up to this?
Oh, I know...

Weekly Design Contest 123: Duration? Are You Sure?

Your task: Design a Kingdom Duration card that gives the player a choice of whether to keep it out an extra turn or not.

Official cards that do this include: Barge, Cargo Ship, Gear, and Secret Cave.

Other official cards (such as Haven) technically can stay out for only 1 turn, but this isn't really by choice when it happens. A card like Haven would not qualify for this week's contest.

WDC #124: Yes… ha ha ha… YES!
Design a non-terminal Attack card.
For this week, ready your pitchforks and load your weapons, it’s Attack time!

Most Attacks in Dominion are terminal. That’s because many Attack effects may either take a long time to resolve or be extremely painful when stacked. Some just have other vanilla effects instead (think most Attacks that draw cards).
There are 10 non-terminal Attack piles if I’m counting correctly (Minion, Scrying Pool, Familiar, Urchin, Relic, Idol, Werewolf, Raider, Vampire, Coven), and a few asterisks in Cultist, Dame Molly, Sir Bailey, and Black Cat. I’ll just say that not all of these are cards you should look for for inspiration. I think Minion sucks (It even has a clause that prevents it from discarding too much, but I still think it’s too much). Scrying Pool doesn’t need the attack imo, Urchin is Urchin, and Familiar… well, I dunno. The later cards are a lot more of what I would like to see in a Dominion card. Donald X. is really good at making cards these days! Who woulda thunk it!

The nature of non-terminal cards is that you can play more of them much easier. Therefore, many non-terminal Attacks have a weaker effect or have an effect that doesn’t stack. Please take these considerations into account when making your card. Of course, you are free to do as you wish! Surprise me!

Clarifications:
・On non-terminality, if when it’s Attacking, it’s non-terminal, that’s a non-terminal Attack. So Werewolf for example counts, but if its options were switched (putting aside how horribly weak that would be), it would not.
・For what's non-terminal or not, we can argue on the specifics of what makes something non-terminal, but I don't feel like taking the time to describe the specifics. If it looks non-terminal to me, it's non-terminal. I'll tell you if your card doesn't fit, and if enough people disagree, I'll relent on it.

WDC #125: What's the Draw?

Rules:
  • Design a card-shaped thing that draws a variable number of cards that is not a draw-to-X (where X is is fixed rather than variable) card
  • For the purposes of this week's contest, binary will not be considered to be "variable".  What I mean by that is that cards like Shanty Town (that draws either 0 or 2 cards), Menagerie (that draws 1 or 3 cards), or Conspirator (that draws either 0 or 1 card) would not qualify.
  • As mentioned above, draw-to-X cards like Library, Watchtower, and Cursed Village would not qualify because they draw up to a predetermined number of cards.  The exception would be a draw-to-X card like faust's Geographer (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=20855.msg873504#msg873504), where the "X" is variable.
  • Your submission can be a non-supply card (in which case you should also submit a supply card or WELP which works with the non-supply card)
  • If your submission is a split pile, only one of the cards needs to meet the contest criteria
  • Your submission can be a WELP*
  • Please do not submit any Traveller lines or mixed piles
  • Official cards that would qualify include Crossroads, City Quarter, Madman, Shepherd, Storyteller, Seer, Scrying Pool, Apprentice, and Tribute
  • Cards that let you draw a variable number of cards for a future turn will also be permitted.  So Research, for example, would qualify.

Contest #126: Seeking an Heir

Design a card that uses the following Heirloom:

As in the last contest I hosted, please do not submit any cards you've previously posted on the forums. Also as before, my judging criteria will focus on balance, playability, fun, and creativity.

A couple of important notes: You'll notice that the Heirloom does not have a name; this is to avoid narrowing the namespace for submissions. Please give the Heirloom a name along with your submission. Lastly, feel free to give the Heirloom a different cost than the (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/32/Coin3.png/16px-Coin3.png) cost I chose; it's probably not super important for balance (depending on your submission, of course), but I'll assume it costs (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/32/Coin3.png/16px-Coin3.png) for all entries unless otherwise specified.

Without any further ado, good luck and have fun designing!

Weekly Design Contest 127: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Design a card that matches the theme of one of the 3 pictures below.

In this contest, you will be tasked to come up with a card that will thematically match one of the 3 suggested pictures. The pictures all come from artist Tomasz Jedruszek (https://www.artstation.com/morano). His material can be found on Artstation (https://www.artstation.com/?sort_by=community). A very talented fellow with inspiring art, I believe he has that magic touch that very-well fit within the legacy of Dominion. Here are the 3 pieces of art in question, with links below them toward ShardOfHonor’s card maker with the picture well-adjusted to the card frame:

You can do whatever with these pictures. Name your card as you wish, price it as your heart desires and give it the best effect you can think of. And hey, make it any type you want too. So long as everything is bundled as a cohesive card. Like, if you take the first picture and name it “Mountain”, I’ll probably give the win to someone else :P . So take that into account, because judging will look at that aspect, alongside the balance of the card. The usual, more or less.

Some extra rules include:
  • The pictures are better formatted to fit a vertical, normal card (that’s debatable, but w/e). So exceptionally, to honour the challenge of this week, no landscapes please. Say no to Events, Landmarks, Projects and Ways.
  • If you're not going to use the card generator and simply want to write what your card does, please specify which art it would use. In most cases, I know this'll be obvious given the name of your card, but let's make it extra clear just in case.
  • I suppose if you’re feeling extra creative, you may use 2 or all 3 pictures to do something like a split pile or a mix pile. Or even use one of them as an out-of-Supply card à la Mercenary. If you do that, it will be up to you to find creative ways to thematically link the cards together. You may even do a mini 3-card Traveller line if you’re into that. Of course, just using one card is probably the simpler, safer bet here.

Weekly Design Contest 128: Look at the Trash!
Design a card or a landscape that refers to cards in the trash.

I do like Trash-for-Benefits like Graverobbers and Salvager. Let's enjoy trashing!

Your card has to look at the trash; gaining from it, counting Treasures in it, playing a card in it (leaving there), or a kind of thing is accepted.

Official cards that would qualify include:
Thief,
Forager,
Necromancer

Official cards that would not qualify include:
Swindler (it just cares the cost of the trashed card),
Treasure Map (it just cares what you trash),
Possession (it doesn't use the trash)

Weekly Design Contest 129: In Play
This week it is all about being in play. Design a card or landscape that in someway cares about what you currently have in play.

I deliberately gave a loose definition "someway cares about what you currently have in play" as I want to give a lot of freedom. For example, it could be behavior dependent on how many cards you have in play, types of cards you have in play, look to see if a certain card is in play, etc.  It could happen when you play the card, or it could be an on gain/buy/trash, etc, effect. You can interact with cards in play, for example trash them, replay them, gain a copy, etc. You could have a card whose properties are changed by what is in play, e.g. Peddler. Conditions on whether or not you can buy or gain a card could be dependent on what is in play, e.g. Grand Market

Below is a list of official cards that I would have deemed acceptable if they didn't already exist. Note the list is not necessarily complete, I might have overlooked something.

Weekly Design Contest 130: Sidekicks
Goons could use a sidekick. Create a split pile using an official card that costs $5 or more as the bottom card. (edited)

I think the game could use more $1 or $2 cost cards, but your submission just has to cost less than the official card it's on top of.

Hint: It helps if there's some mechanic (including spammableness) that makes the top card likely to get bought out and undercover the bottom card. (I know this from experience. I've made at least one split pile where the bottom card never gets uncovered.)

Contest 131: Novel Ways to Overpay
this might be a weird/hard one

Overpay (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Overpay) is one of the rarer mechanics in Dominion; only four canon cards have it, and three of them use it in the same way - do a thing for each extra $1 you spend. Only Stonemason does something different, where it can meaningfully use potions for overpay.

Your goal for this is to design a Kingdom pile that uses overpay in a way that none of the cards from guilds do (it's fine if you and another member end up using it the same way in your entry). The effect you get can be something we've seen before - sometimes you need something to pile out the silvers, right? - but the way in which the overpay is performed should be novel. For instance, maybe you make a card that has a downside if you don't overpay. Or a bonus if you do. Maybe you make a card that does a 2:1 overpay ratio (make sure to include how you're rounding). Or 1:2, if you're feeling bold. Or something entirely different from those.

Your entry must be a non-split pile / non-unique pile kingdom card. It can use non-supply piles, and should use types/mechanics from canon dominion - fan mechanics are fine as long as you're ok with including a short write up describing how they're used. Please no landscapes this contest.

WDC #132: All Hallow's Eve

In honor of upcoming Halloween, this week's contest asks for Night cards... but not just any Night cards, they have to be "in costume".

This weeks contest is to design a Night card that has at least one other (non Duration) type. I'm excluding Night-Duration, as there are already several official cards. Your design can still be Night-Duration, as long as it has at least one other type.

Official Cards that would qualify:

Werewolf
Vampire
Raider
Ghost*

* Ghost, of course, is a non supply card; if you do something similar, please include a supporting supply card

Judgement:

My general criteria continues to be: Is this a card I wish I had designed? So I will look towards it being interesting and fun, foremost, and at least somewhat thematic. While balance is also important, if it's a card that has some imbalance but potential to be fixed, it won't lose many points. I also do tend to lean towards "simpler is better", knowing that it is sometimes in conflict with "interesting and fun".

Bonus points / tiebreaker will be awarded to cards that have an appropriate, Halloween-y theme.

WDC #133: A Time to Feast

As we're heading into the festive season with a number of celebrations just around the corner, let's take a moment to remember Feast (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Feast) from the first edition of Dominion.

Rules:
  • Design a card-shaped thing that allows you to gain cards costing up to $5 (or more)
  • It should not be restricted to gaining specific $5-cost cards (so a card that can only gain Duchies for example would not qualify)
  • There should not be a restriction on the type of card gained (so for example, Advance, University, Haggler, and Jester would not qualify.  Likewise, Pilgrimage and Changeling would not qualify since you are limited to gaining playable cards)
  • It should be able to gain a $5-cost card without any cost reduction (the exception would be if the cost reduction is already provided by your submission)
  • It should not be a pure Remodeler (although self-trash like with Feast would be allowed). So Remodel, Transmogrify, Expand, and even Altar, would not qualify.
  • You can incorporate any fan mechanics (please just provide an explanation of how it works)
  • Official cards other than Feast that would qualify include Artisan, Smugglers, Border Village, Artificer, Duplicate, Vampire, Horn of Plenty, Charm, Banquet, Bargain, Way of the Butterfly
  • Stonemason would qualify due to its on-play ability rather than on-buy ability
  • I'll try to be flexible with the rules.

WDC #134: This is Worthless

Hello everybody! Here's this week's challenge:

Design a card or card shaped thing that costs $0.

Acceptable submissions include:
  • Non-Supply cards costing $0, such as Prizes, Madman, Mercenary, Spoils, Will-o-the-Wisps, or Wishes.
  • Basic and Special Basic Supply cards costing $0, such as Copper, Curse, and Ruins.
  • Starting cards costing $0, such as Heirlooms or Shelters.
  • A Kingdom pile costing $0, though tread lightly here, as there is no official Kingdom card costing $0 (perhaps for good reason).
  • An Event (or Project I suppose) costing $0, such as Advance, Alms, Borrow, Delay, Desperation, or Quest.

Other rules and suggestions:
  • Your entry must cost exactly $0.
  • Debt cost cards (or other alternative costs) do not cost $0 and will not be accepted.
  • Cards with variable costs (which sometimes cost $0) such as Peddler will not be accepted.
  • Overpay cards costing $0 are permitted.
  • Many official $0 cost cards are only gained only via other cards. You may include the card that gains or distributes your $0 cost card (and that one need not cost $0).
  • Your entry should have a compelling and non-arbitrary reason to cost $0 and not something else. Most official $0-costs exemplify this with one or more of the following: 1) being weak or undesirable, 2) meant to be played and not Remodeled, etc., 3) trying to dodge the common $3-$6 trashing attacks, or 4) designed to be always available, but with a drawback or restriction (especially in the case of Events).
  • Don't make me squint. Eliminate unnecessary words and complexity where possible. This is not the challenge for a Traveller line or an eight-card Castles-style mixed pile.

Weekly Design Contest 135: Go Big or Go Home!
Design a card(-shaped thing) that costs $7 or more.

It can be a normal Kingdom card, an Event or a Project.

I will judge based on how well it merits its high price tag, its simplicity and how fun it looks to play.

For simplicity's sake, I will disallow split piles, or anything that requires an additional card in order to gain it.

Weekly Design Contest 136: ‘Tis the Season

December has just begun, which means the holidays are soon around the corner. Therefore to help everybody get into the holiday spirit, here’s the contest for this week (I checked and the same idea was done 2 years ago, so I’m not repeating the idea too soon)

Design a card that provides some sort of benefit to all other players either when played (exs. Council Room, Bishop, Vault) or gained (Lost City, Embassy). Events are also allowed (like Bargain) and I suppose if you really thought about it you could make a Project or Way as well, so I’ll allow those.

Remember that a “benefit” doesn’t always have to help your opponent (sometimes they don’t want that free Silver). Happy Holidays and happy designing! :D

WDC #137: From Whence It Came

Rules:
  • Design a card that contains the text "return this"
  • If your card is a non-supply card, State, or Artifact, please also submit a Supply card that interacts with it
  • Examples of official cards that qualify include Experiment, Horse Traders, Madman, Wish, Horse, Way of the Butterfly, Way of the Horse, Deluded, Envious
  • I can bend the first rule if you want the card to say "return it" rather than "return this" as long as it would have the same meaning if the phrases were substituted (see Spoils and Encampment)
  • This is similar to Contest #93, but your submission doesn't need to return itself to its pile (see Horse Trader)

WDC #138: A Revealing Contest

Currently Patron is the only official card with "when you reveal this ..." "when something causes you to reveal this ..."

Your challenge is to create a new Reaction card that reacts to being revealed. It does not have to be an Action - Reaction, it could be any other type such as a Treasure - Reaction. The reaction can be anything you like, the only requirement is that the trigger be revealing it

Your entry does not have to be a single card. It can be, for example, a split pile or an Heirloom and a paired card or a non-Supply card and a card that gains it, as long as at least one of the cards has this reaction. No Traveller lines or piles like Knights or Castles with multiple different cards.  Maximum of two cards or card-like things please

WDC 139 is:
Design a card that is not an Action, Treasure, or Night card, yet can still be brought into play.

For this contest, we'll work with the de facto rule of the following:
Quote
When something instructs you to play a card that's not an action, treasure, or night card, follow the instructions on the card like you would an action, treasure or night card, including when it would be cleaned up (for duration cards).

This may be an on-buy triggered card (like a self-contained innovation+hireling combo), maybe a  pure reserve type (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=18987.msg772694#msg772694), maybe a only via reaction (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=18987.msg803376#msg803376) does it get played, but it should have a way to get into play, and not be an Action, Treasure, or Night card. If it's solely an on-buy card, it should have some reason for not being an event.

If you need a "null type", or type that the card is when it has no real types, please either use Confusion (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=8619.0) or make up your own "dead" type; cards like Courtier aren't expecting zero types.

Weekly Design Contest #140 is:

Design a card/landscape that has the player "choose three" from a list things it can do.

A common mechanic among official cards allows the player to "choose" from a list of different things that can be done. Most of these tell you to "choose one" from a list of options (see Steward (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Steward), Catacombs (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Catacombs)). Two cards, Pawn (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Pawn) and Trusty Steed (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Trusty_Steed) ask you to "choose two" things, while two more cards, Courtier (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Courtier) and Scrap (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Scrap) allow you to choose a variable number, depending on a card each interacts with.

For this challenge, you need to design a card (or landscape) which allows a player to "choose three" from a list of things that can be done:
  • The design should use the "choose" mechanic from the cards previously listed.
  • Just because an entry contains the phrase "choose three" will not make it qualify.
  • For example, a card that said "Choose 3 cards from your hand and put them onto your deck" would not qualify.
  • However, shortcuts in language are fine. If you said "Choose 3 of the following to gain:" followed by a list of cards, that would be okay; you don't have to say "gain a" each time.
  • I don't care if you use "3" or "three" (as long as it is exactly three, and not a variable number).
  • The three choices must come from a single list. A card that lets a player "choose one" from 3 different lists will not qualify. (Under this rule, Count (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Count) would be different from a "choose two" card).
  • Players should choose exactly three items from the list (not up to 3, or a multiple of three).
  • However, while all of the official "choose" cards with more than one option require choosing all different items, you don't have to follow that restriction. If you want the player to be able to choose an option more than once, that is fine.
Those are the only requirements, but another very important aspect is that the choice should be meaningful. This is somewhat subjective, so I am not going to disqualify any entries, but if players would pick the same 3 things in the vast majority of cases, you probably won't win. Other than that, my main judging criteria is whether I would be excited to see the design in a Kingdom. Important factors for me are:
  • balance -- is the card useful, but not overpowering (both in general and in a variety of Kingdoms)
  • playability -- the card is fun to play and works in more than one type of deck
  • simplicity -- this doesn't always mean fewer words; a card with lots of text that, once you understand it, can be easily and intuitively be played is better than one with four lines of text that is hard to understand
  • topicality -- the card(s)/landscape(s) use(s) the mechanic in an interesting way
Your submission can be a Kingdom card, a non-supply card, or a landscape. If it is a non-Supply card or a landscape like an Artifact or State, make sure to include the card or landscape that gives players access to it. Feel free to use any official or fan mechanics (but if you use the latter, please explain how they work, or provide a link). This includes split piles or other ways to have multiple cards, but if you have too many you will lose points in the simplicity category.

WDC #141: Seaside Revisited

Hello everybody! In light of the recent news of a 2nd Edition for Dominion: Seaside (https://www.riograndegames.com/2022/01/dominion-seaside-2nd-edition-announced/), here's this week's challenge:

Design a new card that fits the theme of Seaside (and optionally, replaces a current card from Seaside)

Other rules and suggestions:
  • You may NOT use unique mechanics from other official expansions. Your card should be one that could reasonably fit in an actual Seaside Second Edition without requiring additional mechanic explanation in the Seaside expansion rulebook. So no landscapes, reserves, travellers, split piles, VP tokens, Coffers/Villagers, Debt, Exile, Horses, Night cards, etc.
  • Your card does not have to be a direct replacement for another official Seaside card, but you are welcome to design one that is (and maybe let us know what card yours is intended to replace).
  • Try to think about how your card would fit in Seaside as a whole. Does Seaside need another village or trasher or non-attack player interaction card, etc. How will replacing an old card with yours affect the expansion generally?
  • If you want to be extra fancy, consider component decisions too. Seaside already comes with some tokens and mats (each of which are utilized by only one card). Do you want to design a card that creatively eliminates the need for a certain component, or perhaps makes another use for one?
  • To that end, I will allow a unique new mechanic that creatively reuses some of the current Seaside components (such as the coin tokens for Pirate Ship), so long as your card is not introducing a "later" mechanic from another official expansion (e.g. Coffers from Guilds and Renaissance).
  • As always with my contests: Don't make me squint. Eliminate unnecessary words and complexity where possible.

WDC #142: High Spirits
For the next contest the brief is to design a new spirit card together with another card or horizontal that provides a method of gaining it.

The rules/restrictions for this are:
- The spirit card you design must not be in the supply and must include the type Spirit.
- Remember that your spirit card can also be gained by Exorcist. Consider that when deciding on the card's nominal cost. It should always be possible for Exorcist to be able to gain your spirit card regardless of what else is in the kingdom.

WDC #143: Can I see your ID first?
This week, your task is to design a card(-shaped object) with a buying or gaining restriction.

The inspiration for this contest is Grand Market. However, once-per-turn or once-per-game Events like Alms or Seize the Day would also be valid.

Here are some more precise rules:
- your submission should have some additional requirement to being bought/gained other than cost.
- if your submission is a card, it should be in the supply; a gaining restriction due to not being in the supply will not be valid. You may still involve non-supply cards.
- the restriction does not need to be explicitly stated as it is on Grand Market, so long as it has an analogous effect.

Obviously there is some room for interpretation, and I will try to be generous if it is in the spirit of the contest. Please be mindful of potential rules issues with a condition like "You may not gain this unless...".

WDC #144: A one time thing
Design a card (shaped thing) with an effect that can only be used once per game

I'm looking for more effects like Seize the Day. Where you think about the whole game and when to deploy the "once per game" effect. These kinds of decisions are in every dominion game (e.g. when to start greening), but a good "once per game" effect will provide even more opportunities.

Most Projects aren't what I really have in mind as they're largely positive and don't feel all that different from buying a card.  However I'm not going to make hard and fast "rules" about it as for example something like Inheritance has "once per game" in its text but it functions more like a Project.

The only rule is something technically that means the effect once per game, per player at most. So all Projects would "qualify". Something like Mountain Pass that's once per game across all players is also acceptable. Supply piles of one card are acceptable, but try keep it within the spirit of the contest - it shouldn't be bought many times in most games due to a "return to the supply" effect.

Once per game was an option for last week but it wasn't explored that often. Additionally, this week it need not relate to buying/gaining.  A Village, no buy restrictions, with a once per game additional effect would be a great entrant.

Edit: Oneshot Heirlooms do qualify, as long as they can't be gained back most of the time (e.g. if the card the Heirloom is paired with can gain from the trash). If you want to submit an heirloom you must also pair it with a card (shaped thing), which may or may not also have a "once per game" effect.

Weekly Design Contest 145: Down the hatch!

Design a card that thematically lends itself to alcohol

Allies is around the corner! Previews have dropped! Dominion now has 14 expansions in its catalogue. 14!
This calls for a celebration! Bring out the Champaign, because this contest is all about alcohol. And, well, nothing much more beyond that, actually. It’s pretty simple really: just make a card that invokes alcohol thematically.

It doesn’t need to be as straightforward as a mug o’ beer. A keg is as acceptable of a card as would be a bar or a brew master. Or how about a nice branch of hops? Anyway, these are just quick ideas to get you going. Go nuts beyond that. But remember: t’has to do with alcohol!

Some extra rules include:
  • Actually, not many extra rules. You can do a Landscape card if you want. Or send multiple cards at once, such as with split piles or Travelers. I will say though that I prefer when only one card is submitted. Makes it easier to judge, lol.

Weekly Design Contest 146: Contacts
I get to do the obligatory new expansion mechanic contest!

I'll make it simple.
Who's going to be the contact between you and your allies?
Design a liaison (a card the gives favor tokens or otherwise causes players to have favor tokens... (like Importer)).

It doesn't have to necessarily be a card that would fit in the Allies expansion. Feel free to use mechanics from other expansions as well. But no travellers. Those are tough on judging.

Well, we designed a liaison. Let's do the other one, design an Ally.

No kingdom/non-supply piles, please, and do try to limit the number of Other Components I'd need to drag out - I'm already getting coin tokens and mats, I don't want to be getting Other Mats.

If you need to include other types, in the interest of keeping your card readable without me getting my reading glasses out, consider using the "Heirloom" portion of the card generator to add additional types.

Weekly Design Contest #149: The Resurrection
With Good Friday and Easter right around the corner, I've got Resurrection on my mind. So here's this week's challenge:

Design a card or landscape that can retrieve another card (or itself) out of the Trash.

Acceptable submissions include:
  • Cards that can gain other cards from the Trash, such as Lurker, Graverobber, Rogue, or Treasurer
  • Cards with when-trash clauses that pull themselves back out of the Trash, such as Fortress or Lich.
  • Trashing Attacks that trash and then "steal" from trashed cards, such as Noble Brigand or the now removed Thief.
  • Any other creative idea you can come up with that can "resurrect" trashed cards.

Other rules and suggestions:
  • Your entry must somehow facilitate moving a previously trashed card out of the Trash.
  • It doesn't necessarily have to be gained, or even return to a player. Returning trashed cards to the Supply or somewhere else is acceptable.
  • Cards that can gain copies of themselves when trashed (like Acolyte) or otherwise trash themselves into other cards (like Urchin or Hermit) will not be accepted.
  • Cards that only play other cards from the Trash but do not cause them to leave the Trash, such as Necromancer, will not be accepted.
  • Be sure to consider how cards might get into the Trash as not every Kingdom has a trasher. Notice that Lurker, Graverobber, Rogue, and Treasurer all have the ability to trash other cards. Fortress and Lich do not, though they still have utility apart from their when-trash clauses.
  • I will accept split piles or non-Supply cards as part of your submission, just try to keep things to no more than two cards if possible.
  • Also think about card interactions, particularly trash-for-benefit cards. Obviously these tend to play quite nicely with these sorts of cards, but be wary of making something that's too busted. (Although I guess there's plenty of crazy official stuff down this road already, ahem looking at you, Lurker + Hunting Grounds).
  • Don't make me squint. Eliminate unnecessary words and complexity where possible.

Judgement Details:
  • Entries and revisions must be submitted by 5:00 PM CDT (10:00 PM UTC) on Friday, April 22. I'll have results posted on Sunday, April 24.
  • Entries will be judged on ingenuity, balance, simplicity, and creative/appropriate use of the "resurrection" mechanic.

Have fun! With trashing historically always feeling like a very permanent act in Dominion, things like Fortress, Graverobber, and Lurker broke my brain when they were released, and I love the way they change up the game. There's a variety of directions people can go this week and I'm excited to see your designs!

Weekly Design Contest #151: Now or Later
Design a Duration that is either "Now and at the start of your next turn" or "Either now or at the start of your next turn"; Ideally, the card should not do other things - for example, Caravan wouldn't qualify as this, since it doesn't give +1 Action next turn; or Royal Galley (although it would if it also gave +1 Card on your next turn). The focus should be on the benefit from the "now and next turn" action, rather than something ancilliary.

So for official cards, Lighthouse Wharf would count for the former, or Barge would count for the latter. A non-exhaustive and lazy list.

As for additional rules, I'm not going to disqualify entries, mechanics, traveller lines, split piles, yadda yadda, but one of the core tenets you should be aiming for is to keep it simple. You will engender a great deal of goodwill from me, who will be judging, by keeping it simple.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Contest will close 5/12, around noon EDT, with judgment to follow.

also i was going to title this contest "( Now and Later ) xor ( Now xor Later )" but logic-wise that reduces to "Now or Later". oh well, i can be clever some other time.

Weekly Design Contest #152: Play it Again
So, since Allies came out we have had contests to design Liaisons (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=21141.0) and Allies (http://), and if you all submitted a full set of 4-card piles, the next expansion would likely come up before I could fully judge of all them. Thus, I have decided to go with the other mechanic/motif from Allies, recursion.

Unlike the very specific mechanic that is Liaison/Ally, the notion of recursion is much fuzzier. So, here is my definition:

Recursion is a card's ability to move itself after it's been played so that you get that copy of the card back in your hand to replay it more quickly than you otherwise would have.

Official manifestations of recursion include Optional Topdecking* (Merchant Camp, (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Merchant_Camp) Tent (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Tent)), Conditional Topdecking (Student (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Student)), Conditionally Optional Topdecking (Alchemist (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Alchemist)), and Duration-into-Hand (Conjurer (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Conjurer)), and (although a bit less obviously so), Duration-into-Discard (Highwayman (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Highwayman)).

I would not consider cards that are gained to hand (e.g. Ghost Town (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Ghost_Town)) or gained onto deck (Nomad Camp (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Nomad_Camp)) to be recursive, as the get-them-sooner is associated with gaining them, rather than playing them. That being said, I am not going to disqualify any card that has the capacity to move itself or to replay itself. But cards that play copies of themself (Cultist (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Cultist)) don't count.

The contest is simple: design a card that uses recursion. While the recursion itself will have to be on a card (rather than a landscape--although a Way could work since it will be played through a card), feel free to use supporting cards and/or landscapes, and any other official or fan mechanic (if you use a fan mechanic, please either explain how it works or link to a post that does), keeping in mind that simplicity is important.

My main judging criteria is whether I would be excited to see the design in a Kingdom.
  • topicality -- the card(s)/landscape(s) use(s) recursion in an interesting way

The deadline for submissions will be 16:00 UTC / 12:00 p.m. Forum (Eastern) time on Monday, May 23, 2022 23:00 UTC / 7:00 p.m. Forum (Eastern) time on Monday, May 23, 2022. Please let me know if you have any questions.

EDIT: Cards that replay themselves will also not be disqualified, but you should read this follow-up post (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=21223.msg891493#msg891493) explaining how I wouldn't consider many such cards to really fit the theme of recursion.

* While the term "topdeck" is frequently used on this forum and in Shuffle iT's user interface, it is not a term that's used in the syntax of official cards, so it should not be used in card designs (IMO).

Thanks to 4est for this idea.

For this weeks contest design a card that fits the theme of Prosperity/Prosperity 2E (you may have it replace a current card from Prosperity).

You may not use mechanics from other expansions so no landscapes, reserves, travelers, split piles, Coffers/Villagers, Exile, Debt, Horses, Night cards, etc.. Your card should be one that could fit in Prosperity 2E.

The contest will end in exactly one week from now.

Weekly Design Contest #154: And another thing...
The contest this week is to design a new Artifact and whatever is needed to bring it into the game.

(I had a quick check and couldn't see an Artifact contest before - if it has already been done let me know.)

Here's the inspiration - Donald X himself thinks he should have come up with more / better ones:
Quote from: Donald X. on Dominion Discord 2021
For Renaissance, the Artifacts did not work out so great. Maybe the best move there is to save them for the next set and see if I improve them. ... I like Flag Bearer and Swashbuckler; so, two cards, not really enough, save Artifacts for when I have more.

Clarifications:
  • An Artifact is something that only one player can have at a time, unlike States which generally have a copy for each player. Eg "Lost in the Woods" functions as an Artifact even though it is a State.
  • You will probably need to design some card(s) or landscape(s) in addition to the Artifact, in order to bring the Artifact into the game. And I am ok with an entry that introduces 2 Artifacts (like Border Guard does). However I would prefer entries to consist of no more than 3 things total (including the Artifact(s)).
  • Added 5th June I'll be attempting to judge not just the Artifact but the whole package of the Artifact + whatever cards/landmarks bring it into the game.
Until next week, good luck!

Weekly Design Contest #155: Warlord's bane
The challenge for this week shall be to design a card that can be played from somewhere other than your hand.

What place it can be played from is up to your choosing - the discard pile, the top of your deck, maybe the Exile mat or the trash? What is important is the card does not explicitly need a different card to play it: So for instance you can play any Action or Treasure from the top of your deck with Gamble, but that doesn't mean that any of these will qualify. Some examples of official cards that would qualify are
  • Village Green - can be played from your discard pile. (note that this only works if other cards discard it, but since those cards don't play Village Green, that is admissible)
  • Herald - a Herald can play other Heralds from the top of your deck
  • Necromancer - technically a Necromancer can play another Necromancer from the trash, though this is rarely useful
If you want, you can also design a split pile where one of the cards can play the other, Saunavanto-style, but from somewhere other than your hand.

Note: Despite the title of this contest, the card you design need not be an Action.

Weekly Design Contest #156: When Gain
Hey everybody! We're on the eve of Hinterlands 2E reveals this week, but to prevent the weirdness of doing a 2E-themed contest the same week as the official reveals (like with Prosperity), I'm going to keep this week's contest a bit more general while still paying homage to one of Hinterlands' major themes.

Design a card or landscape that features a when-gain effect.

Acceptable submissions include:
  • Cards that have a when-gain effect when players gain them (usually using a below-line clause) such as Mint, Border Village, Inn, Ill-Gotten Gains, Embassy, Lost City, Emporium, Villa, Cemetery, Blessed Village, Skulk, Ducat, Experiment, Silk Merchant, Lackeys, Spices, Camel Train, Cavalry, or any of the Night cards that gain themselves to your hand.
  • Cards with effects that can trigger when another card is gained, such as Sailor, Pirate, Watchtower, Collection, Tiara, Duchess, Trader, Duplicate, Groundskeeper, Tracker, Changeling, Black Cat, Sheepdog, Falconer, Livery, Guildmaster, or Skirmisher.
  • Landscapes that grant an effect when a card is gained, such as Travelling Fair, Battlefield, Guildhall, Innovation, or Architect's Guild.

Other rules and suggestions:
  • Your entry must feature a when-gain effect that can trigger the moment a card is gained.
  • Cards and landscapes that check gains later in a turn but don't grant immediate "when gain" effects (like Triumph, Conquest, Monastery, or the errata'd version of Merchant Guild) will not be accepted.
  • Cards whose gain effects are tied to if clauses and handled separately from the gaining event (like Ironworks or Dominate) will not be accepted.
  • As of today it looks like, Overpay cards are now technically "when gain" thanks to the new errata (http://forum.shuffleit.nl/index.php?topic=5616.0), so they are acceptable.
  • Take into account the recent shift we've seen away from when-buy triggers, and try to stick to when gain language, adding clauses like "When you gain this, if you bought it" or "When you gain this during your Buy phase" when necessary.
  • I will accept split piles or non-Supply cards as part of your submission, just try to keep things to no more than two cards if you can.
  • Don't make me squint. Eliminate unnecessary words and complexity where possible.

Judgement Details:
  • Entries and revisions must be submitted by 5:00 PM CDT (10:00 PM UTC) on Sunday, July 3. I'll have results posted on Tuesday, July 5.
  • Entries will be judged on ingenuity, balance, simplicity, and creative/appropriate use of the when-gain mechanic.

Have fun! As I was pulling examples of official cards with when-gain effects, I was shocked at how many there are (and I eventually stopped including them all). Thus, there are a wide variety of directions people can go this week, it seems Hinterlands really started a trend here!

I'm excited to see your designs!

Weekly Design Contest #157: Token of Appreciation
Contest: Design a card or landscape that adds Tokens to a card.

So uh, Garrison. Needs to use a bit of a contrived way to track gains this turn for Cards next turn, but there's probably more that can be done with the concept. I've come up with a couple ideas in my own fan expansion, (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=21166.0) (note to self: remake this when I know a bit more about making expansions and also when it's not 2am) and now I think it's time to have everyone else throw their hats into the ring.

Acceptable submissions include:

-Cards that only use the term Tokens (Garrison)
-Cards that add Coffers or Debt tokens to a pile (Tax)
-Gathering cards (Temple, Farmer's Market)
-Cards that add any of the four above to a different pile (Defiled Shrine, Aqueduct)
-A new or unique type of token (Embargo)
-Adventures Tokens or Adventures-adjacent Tokens (e.g. Plan)

I will not be including:

-Cards that add tokens to a mat (Trade Route, Pirate Ship)
-Cards that use tokens but don't interact with piles or cards in play (e.g. Butcher)
-Landmarks that only have tokens on themselves (e.g. Baths)

Judgement ends July 14th, by Midnight PST. I plan to have the results posted two days later. (July 16th)

Entries will be judged on creativity, balance, use of the mechanic, and anything else I deem interesting or arbitrary.

Best of luck to all who enter!

Weekly Design Contest #158: What Happened To My Estates?!
Your challenge this week is to do for another expansion what Shelters did for Dark Ages: design 3 cards to replace opening Estates, themed on one of the official expansions other than Dark Ages and Base.

The winner will be decided based on how well the cards fit with the expansion, as well as how well they work as opening cards. Please keep in mind that, as these are opening cards, they are cards you should want to trash a lot of the time. You can also make up a new type and color for them to share if you like, but in my opinion the Shelter type is only thematic for Dark Ages. Also, please give the name of the expansion you are using as a base.

Weekly Design Contest #159: Some Nights
So, even before Commodore Chuckles had us designing Shelters for other expansions, with the restarting of the Set Expansion Contest, I'd been thinking about set-specific mechanics (i.e. those that are only in one or two expansions). Many of them (Debt, Reserve) require additional components (like tokens, mats, etc.) that would make it hard to casually include a single example of them in a set. One notable exception to this are Night cards, which, while exclusive to Nocturn, don't require anything but a different color card and an explanation of how they work in the rules.

Thus, I have come up with this week's challenge:

Design a Night card that would "fit" in an expansion besides Nocturn.

The easiest way for a card to fit into another expansion is for it to use a mechanic/component specific to that expansion (see follow-up post for an incomplete list). It may be possible to make a card fit thematically with a set without using such a mechanic, and they certainly aren't required. But the card should feel like it fits in that set.

You may use multiple cards and/or landscapes, including non-Supply cards. There's no limit to the number (but keep in mind that simplicity is a judging criteria). But, at least one of the cards in your submission needs to be an original Night card you designed. Also, please be sure to identify which expansion you are using.

Also, since the card needs to  "fit" in one of the official expansions, it cannot have any set-specific features from a different set (aside from being a Night card). That means no Reserve cards that gain Horses, no Allies that give Villagers, etc. It also means no fan mechanics which would require additional rules etc.

My main judging criteria is whether I would be excited to see the design in a Kingdom. Important factors for me are:
  • balance -- is the card useful, but not overpowering (both in general and in a variety of Kingdoms);
  • playability -- the card is fun to play and works in more than one type of deck;
  • simplicity -- this doesn't always mean fewer words; a card with lots of text that, once you understand it, can be easily and intuitively be played is better than one with four lines of text that is hard to understand; and
  • topicality -- the card (or cards) uses the mechanic in an interesting way--here, this means both that the card works (and makes sense) as a Night card and it fits the set.

The deadline for submissions will be 06:00 UTC / 2:00 a.m. Eastern/Forum time on Thursday, August 4, 2022.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

EDIT: Because whether a card's flavor and/or mechanic "fits" in an expansion is subjective, I'm not going to disqualify anything for not being sufficiently like the set. The only grounds for disqualification is using a different set's mechanics/card.

Weekly Design Contest #160: Two Base Cards
This week's challenge:

Design a card/landscape that contains the names of two base cards in the body of its text.

Base cards include Copper, Silver, Gold, Estate, Duchy, Province, Curse, Potion, Platinum, and Colony. I recommend against using Platinum or Colony, as they won't be present in every game; but if you can find a way to make it work, they are options.

Official card-shaped things that would qualify include Count, Bandit Fort, and Explorer (explorer even names three!).

My judging will mostly be based on simplicity and novelty. I will allow things like split piles, but the more things I have to read the grumpier I will be and therefore you will be less likely to win. I will not be too concerned about balance, as long as I think the card is balanceable with reasonable changes.

Some other clarifications:
  • Naming the same base card twice is not sufficient.
  • If you use multiple cards (e.g. a split pile), at least one individual card must have two or more base cards named on it.
  • Designing a new doom card does not automatically qualify just because hexes have two or more base cards on them. But you could design a new hex (like Locusts) that has two or more base cards on it. Similarly for Fate cards/Boons.

Weekly Design Contest #161: You Spin me Right Round

Allies might not be brand new anymore, but there's still one of its major themes we haven't touched on much for WDCs. And that is of course... rotating split piles. This week's contest is for you to design a rotating split pile with 4 copies of 4 differently named cards (also steadily increasing in cost from top to bottom). That's it. The cards can be any type (including types not present in Allies). Keep in mind that the cards in the pile should complement/interact with each other in some way.

My favourite kinds of cards in Dominion are ones that are relatively strong and have many interactions with other existing cards, so take that as my judging criteria.

I'll close this contest on August 27 at 11 PM EST (might need a bit of extra time for judging on this one, we'll have to see).

Weekly Design Contest 162:You Can Trip at $5
Design a cantrip card costing (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7d/Coin5.png/16px-Coin5.png) or more.

I have always found creating such cards to be hard. And yet, Dominion wants these cards to exist, somehow. We have Cartographer, Groundskeeper, Swap, etc... The task of this challenge is for you to add a new card to that list!

A cantrip is a card that gives you +1 Card and +1 Action. Base yourself upon the "List of Cantrip Cards" listed on this page (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Cantrip).

Some extra rules include:
  • Please, do not make a Village, Laboratory or a Peddler variant. That opens up the design space a little too much for my taste and well, we want to have some kind of challenge here! A Village generates +2 Actions. A Laboratory increases your handsize by making you draw 2 or more cards. A Peddler is a cantrip that also yield +(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/f/f7/Coin1.png/16px-Coin1.png) (or more).
  • Normally, a cantrip starts with a vanilla +1 Card and +1 Action. That's the purest and easiest form of a cantrip, you should aim to do just that. However, some cantrips can be creative, as is the case with Sorceress. The +1 Card aspect of it is hidden in the non-vanilla text. You can try to do that, but please be careful.
  • Ideally, your card would cost (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7d/Coin5.png/16px-Coin5.png). But you can make a cantrip costing (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/6/6f/Coin6.png/16px-Coin6.png), or (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/b/bc/Coin7.png/16px-Coin7.png), etc...
Judging will attempt to be completed by 2022-09-08. I'm giving myself a week and a buffer of two extra days to account for the inevitable delays I always put you guys through (sorry)!

Weekly Design Contest #163: Cleaning The Banlist

Design a card to replace your least favourite card (or a disliked card).

It should keep at least some aspect or idea from it the same, like Explorer being replaced by Pirate. It doesnt need to be a widely hated card, just one you personally dont like for whatever reason and think you can improve the concept of.

Keep the mechanics to the set you're replacing the card from. For example you cant replace an intrigue card with one that gives horses. And please tell me the card youre replacing with your submission.

Im mainly judging cards on how much I think I'd enjoy it, and how well it replaces the terrible one. I dont mind complicated submissions but im more excited by simple but effective ideas.

Judging ends about a week from now (midnight 18th September BST).

Weekly Design Contest #164: Read the Fine Print

Your challenge this week is to design a card with text under a dividing line that makes the card weaker than it would be otherwise.

You can use mechanics from any expansion. The drawback must be an effect that would normally be placed below a dividing line. These include effects that occur sometime other than when the card is played (e.g. on trash, gain, or discard), setup instructions, and cost changes. While I will be judging based off my perception of the card as a whole, I will have a slight preference to cards whose penalty feels like a natural complement to its above-line text.

Some existing cards that would be eligible are: Cursed Village, Grand Market, Charlatan, Cache, Lost City, and Capital.

Submissions will close on the 28th. Good luck!

Weekly Design Contest #165: More Favorites, More Fun

For this contest, think about your favorite cards. The ones you picked on Dominion Online. What do you like about them? What makes games with them fun? Why do you like seeing them pop up in a kingdom when you're playing full random?

Your challenge this week is to create another card that replicates what you like about that card, as if to simulate the card being twice as likely to pop up. Maybe it's the mechanic. Maybe it's the niche it fills in kingdoms. Maybe it's just the way the card feels to play. It's not for me to say why you should or shouldn't like a card, so there are no formal rules for entering this competition. But it will help me with judging if you identify the card (shaped thing) you like and why. I also don't think saying a broad category of card ("Villages", "Trashing", "Terminal Draw") is what I had in mind.

This is basically an open round. I will be assessing on whether I think games with the card would be fun to play, but also on how creatively they fit what you find fun about a given card.  If Village is your favourite card and you submit Village but with +3 Actions instead of +2 Actions, I'm happy for you, but try and be a bit creative if you want to win. Again, your explanation of why you like a card you like is very welcome.

If they seem like they're brand new cards, but would also be talked about as "Original card/Your card" in threads here, you're on to a winner.

Weekly Design Contest #166: Who still cares about buying?

With recent errata, the "when you buy" trigger has been mostly removed and replaced by "when you gain" (or sometimes "when you gain a card you bought"). The buys are sad; noone pays attention to them anymore!

Therefore, your challenge today is to design a card or card-shaped object that cares about buys. It could do things upon buying stuff, or care about the number of buys, or maybe about the number of things bought by some player.

Note that you should keep to the spirit of the errata, and avoid direct "when you buy" triggers unless there is a very good reason to have them. Also note that the official Overpay mechanic is still tied to buying, so any Overpay card would be a valid entry for this contest.

Weekly Design Contest #167: Monster Mash
Have you ever noticed that, while cards can have multiple types in any combination (including, since Intrigue (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Intrigue), otherwise independent types), every landscape is just one type. But with Halloween coming this week--a time when barriers are breached and things aren't always what they seem--your task will be to break that rule and mash two kinds of landscapes. Specifically, this week's challenge is to:

Design a landscape that uses at least 2 official landscape types.

Originally I was going to limit this contest to two W (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Way)E (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Event)L (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Landmark)P (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Project)s, but I'd prefer to leave the design space more open. If your combo has implications on the rules, please clarify. For example, if you design an Event - Artifact that can only be bought by the player that has it, you need to make that clear.

In addition to the multi-type landscape, feel free to use any number of supporting landscapes and/or cards (including non-Supply cards), and any official or fan mechanics (if you use a fan mechanic, please explain how it works or post a link). While fan mechanics are acceptable, the main landscape you submit needs to use at least two official mechanics (Acts and Edicts don't count). Also, if one of your submission's types is reliant on a kingdom card (i.e. an Artifact or State), make sure to include the card that gives players access to it (if necessary).

Finally, while not grounds for disqualification, I will be awarding points for landscapes with a flavor that fits the Halloween theme. Anything that involves or references monsters, spirits, magic, the occult, or anything supernatural will have a paw up on the competition.

My main judging criteria is whether I would be excited to see the design in a Kingdom. Important factors for me are:
  • balance -- is the landscape useful, but not overpowering (both in general and in a variety of Kingdoms);
  • playability -- the landscape is fun to play and works/helps with more than one type of deck;
  • simplicity -- this doesn't always mean fewer words; a landscape with lots of text that, once you understand it, can be easily and intuitively be played is better than one with a couple lines of text that is hard to understand; and
  • topicality -- the landscape combines the types in an interesting way.

The deadline for submissions will be 05:00 UTC / 1:00 a.m. Eastern/Forum time on Tuesday, November 1, 2022.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Weekly Design Contest #168: Turkey Time[/img]
Often overshadowed by Christmas, Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday of mine.  I recognize that it isn't a global holiday, but for my sake, I'm theming the contest after Thanksgiving.

Design a card or a WELP that involves food or beverages.  Existing or old cards that qualify would be Feast, Horn of Plenty, Baker, Fisherman, Greed, Farmer's Market, Wine Merchant, Forager, Harvest, Vineyard, Herbalist, Fishing Village, etc.
Others like Swap, Demand, or Blessed Village are not necessarily related to food, but have food in the picture (or in Demand's case, an empty plate) These can still qualify but lose out on some thematic points when I judge.

There are a lot of cards loosely related to food or drink, but the more related the better.

I'll try to keep tabs on this contest but I will warn you up front, I don't check DSF much over the weekend.  I plan on Closing the contest on Thursday November 17th, then Judging on the 18th or possibly the 19th.

WDC #169: I Am Not Throwing Away My [One-]Shot

Hello again, everybody! Here's this week's contest:

Design a card that is (or can be) a one-shot.

As a reminder, a one-shot is a card that can remove itself from your deck after playing it, via trashing itself, setting aside, returning to its pile, etc.

Acceptable submissions include:
  • Mandatory one-shots which are always one-use only, such Island, Treasure Map, Pillage, Distant Lands, Changeling, Acting Troupe, or the now removed Feast or Embargo
  • Conditional one-shots which are optional or only trigger at a certain threshold, such as Mining Village, Investment, Horn of Plenty, Fool's Gold, Death Cart, Hermit, Knights, Urchin, Raze, Engineer, Encampment, Farmer's Market, Small Castle, Pixie, Tragic Hero, or Acolyte.
  • Non-supply one-shots, such as Madman, Spoils, Horses, or Wishes

Other rules and suggestions:
  • While many Travellers are technically optional one-shots, for the sake of this contest (and my judging time), let's stick to a max of two total cards per submission.
  • I prefer submissions where in most instances, the one-shot trigger permanently removes the card, vs. only temporarily (excluding edge cases like from-trash-gainers). So try to avoid Reserve cards like Rat Catcher or Wine Merchant which can bring themselves back into your deck, back and forth exchangers like Vampire and Bat, or things like Stockpile which is often only removed temporarily.
  • Your submission itself must have a way to be a one-shot on its own vs. requiring other cards, so things like Procession, Way of the Horse, or Way of the Butterfly will not be accepted.
  • I know there's a bit of nuance here on what constitutes a one-shot, so to make things easier, if I believe your submission meets all the requirements, I'll give it a +1.
  • Your submission should have a clear and compelling reason to have a one-shot trigger, and especially for conditional one-shots, it should make for interesting decisions of when to use it or not.
  • As mentioned above, I will accept non-Supply cards or split piles as part of your submission, just try to keep things to no more than two cards if you can.
  • Don't make me squint. Eliminate unnecessary words and complexity where possible.

Judgement Details:
  • Entries and revisions must be submitted by 5:00 PM CT (11:00 PM UTC) on Saturday, November 26. I'll have results posted on or before Monday, November 28.
  • Entries will be judged on ingenuity, balance, simplicity, and creative/appropriate use of the one-shot mechanic.

Have fun! While it feels like one-shots have gotten increasingly rare in Dominion these days, it was surprising to see how many there still are, and it feels like there's a lot of design space people can go with both mandatory and conditional options.

I'm excited to see your designs!

Weekly Design Contest #170: 2/7 Offsuit

Design an Attack card that costs either (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/3d/Coin2.png/16px-Coin2.png) or (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/b/bc/Coin7.png/16px-Coin7.png).

Official cards that meet the requirement are Black Cat.

Card/card-shaped-things that do not qualify no matter the cost are as follows: Raid (Not a card), Masquerade/Possession (Not Attacks.)

Just because an Attack card has a high cost doesn't mean it needs a powerful Attack part. Look at Goons as a past example.

Split piles, non-Supply cards, and card-shaped-things are fine, but please limit your submissions to 2 cards/card-shaped-things. I don't want to judge a 4-way split pile or Traveller line.

Variable cost and overpay are allowed, as long as the original cost is either 2 or 7.

Contest will close approximately 168 hours from now (7 days.)

Weekly Design Contest #171: Gains Upon Gains

I've noticed a bit of a trend in a lot of my favorite official cards. I love when gainers can go absolutely nuts. There's something about scooping up a whole boatload of cards in a single turn that really appeals to that synergistic-combo thrill inside me. So hey, why not make it into a contest?

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to design a card (shaped thing) that has the potential to gain at least 2 cards at a time without other assistance. That might be a bit of a vague description, so I'll clarify exactly what types of cards I'm thinking of.

- Cards that unconditionally gain you multiple cards (ex. Beggar, it gains you 3 Coppers to your hand)
- Cards that conditionally gain you multiple cards (ex. Trader, it can gain multiple Silvers if it trashes something costing at least $2)
- Cards that give you a choice to gain multiple cards (ex. Weaver, you can take 2 Silvers if you don't want a single $4 card)
- Events that give multiple cards when purchased (ex. Populate, it gains you 1 of every Action card in the Kingdom) or sometimes do (ex. Pilgrimage, can gain you up to 3 cards you have in play every other time it is bought)

You can choose whether you want your submissions to gain specific cards (like Coppers or Silvers) or have a more general criteria (like multiple $4 cost cards)

Here's some examples of things I will not be accepting:
- Horse gainers (ex. Paddock) as these feel more like draw cards than standard "gainers" to me
- On gain/on trash effects, in the cases of Kingdom card submissions I would like to have the gaining happen on play as opposed to being tied to only on gain/trash effects. (However your card can have one of these effects if it is also capable of gaining multiple cards when played)
- +Buys. I would like the card to gain directly on its own rather than just providing you with more Buys to have extra gains in the Buy Phase. (Same as above, your card can provide +Buy if it is also capable of gaining multiple cards when played)

I'll close the contest at 8 PM EST on Dec. 16th, and judging should follow shortly after that.
Good luck and have fun designing!

Weekly Design Contest #172: Trait Me Right

The rules are simple: Design a Trait. Your Trait may have another card/card-shaped-thing associated with it, but please limit yourselves to 1 Trait and a max of 1 other new thing. So, neither 4-way split piles, Traveller lines, nor whole new sets of 15 Loots will be accepted.

The contest will close on Wednesday the 28th, so you get a little extra time for this one if you're gone for the Holidays (like I will be.)

Hello friends!

Before I share the prompt, a quick intro:

Whether you're brand new to the forums or have been around since the Isotropic days, all of us likely first stumbled upon this curious little community for the same reason: We wanted to get better at this cool game we'd just discovered called Dominion.

For this week's contest, I want to try something a little different. Let's hone in on that specific drive of wanting to grow our personal skill, experience, and enjoyment in actually playing Dominion, while tying it into a tradition that often comes up this time of year.

WDC #173: New Year's Resolutions

This challenge has two parts:

1) Share your "Dominion New Year's resolution."

2) Design a card or card-shaped-thing that might help you achieve that resolution.

For part one, I won't really be judging the resolutions, so have fun with this! It can be something based on a specific Dominion skill/mechanic you're trying to improve in, or on how you personally play or enjoy Dominion. Some examples of resolutions include (and feel free to steal any of these if you want):
  • To learn how to trash down more quickly.
  • To not trigger so many bad reshuffles.
  • To get better at spotting three pile endings.
  • To play more multiplayer games.
  • To finally play expansions after Dark Ages.
  • To not hate attacks so much anymore.

For part two and the design piece, obviously this week's contest is super open-ended, so there aren't necessarily any rules or restrictions apart from ensuring your card/landscape is somehow tied into your resolution. Take this however you like :)

Split piles, non-Supply cards, and other components are allowed, just try not to go too crazy here (like maybe don't give me a brand new set of 15 Loots to judge or something). As always: Don't make me squint. Eliminate unnecessary words and complexity where possible.

Judgement Details:
  • Resolutions, entries, and revisions must be submitted by 5:00 PM CT (11:00 PM UTC) on Friday, January 6. I'll have results posted on or before Sunday, January 8.
  • Entries will be judged on ingenuity, balance, simplicity, and creative/appropriate connection to their Dominion New Year's resolution

Have fun! I hope everyone can spend a moment reflecting on the specific ways you'd like to enhance your Dominion skill and experience in 2023 and channel that inspiration into some creative submissions. Excited to see your resolutions and designs!

Happy New Year!
