Less often than you do, but not never.

This question vexes me, and because of that I can’t decide if it’s my least favorite or my favorite Heirloom.

i think it's a bit underplayed turn 1 at higher levels actually. If you're passing up playing cursed gold and not buying a 4+ cost trasher t1/t2 because of it, you're probably doing it wrong

I feel it's quite akin to Spoils (from Dark Ages)... Don't play it unless you need to.  There is one contrast, and that is with Spoils, you don't play it and then buy Gold.  Here, it seems like it could go either way.. the Gold helps out, but then would be cancelled out by the Curse, and then never again playing the CG.

Being able to get to some key cards, or key situations where timing counts would be what I've got.  If Curses are helpful, like in Garden decks or with Quest out.

Of course, CG is pretty much a Gold again if the Curses are all gone.

It's usually a decent play in the opening to get a $5. Especially if the $5 is a trasher (and Pooka is always present) or a junker, since the speed you gain directly makes up for adding junk to your deck. After that just try to TfB it as soon as possible.

Well, keep in mind that gaining a Curse is like trashing a Lab from your deck. It's okay to play it if you're buying something better than a Lab, or if it's trivially easy to get rid of the Curse later.

The main difference is that you usually want to play the Spoils just to remove it from your deck, even if you don't need the coins.

I think it's usually incorrect to use Cursed Gold to open with Pooka, unless you are also opening with a non-terminal card that can trash non-treasures.

I don't think there's a good general answer to the OP's question.  It depends on the board, and it also depends on the opening split.  If Cursed Gold is in a hand with 2 Copper, it's usually a lot more attractive to use than if it's in a hand with 3-4 Copper.

I think that Pooka would be really strong/overpowered for $5, but the constant presence of Cursed Gold on Pooka boards balances it out. If you keep trashing Coppers, you're left with a deck of Estates and Curses, and 1 Cursed Gold.

I have a similar issue with catapault, where I just have no idea how often you should trash coppers v estates the first few plays.

You should always trash Coppers unless you have a very good reason why you need to hit that $1 more this turn.

Depends on how much the discard attack is going to hurt (tracking opponent’s deck, $5s or $4s or even 3’s available, do they have their Catapult in hand, etc). All I know is I’m usually wrong.

Watchtower + Cursed Gold = sex

That's what I tend to do, but it seems like lately I often lose to people who clear out the estates early.
