Title: Bonus Preview #4: Leprechaun
Post by: LastFootnote on October 26, 2017, 09:01:25 am
Today I get to preview the most fun-loving Doom card of all, Leprechuan.

Leprechaun costs $3 and gains you Gold. What a deal! But unless you’re careful, the Leprechaun will also play a prank on you. Just going by the Hexes previewed today, your Gold might come with a Copper on your deck, or you’ll have to trash a $3-$4 card, or maybe all your Silvers and Golds will be Coppers this turn. Is it worth it? I guess that depends.

If you are careful, you’ll gain a Wish instead of receiving a Hex. And a Wish is pretty sweet, I tell you what. It’s a one-use ticket to gain any card costing $6 or less directly to your hand. Sometimes that will be a Gold, but often there’s something you’d rather have that fits the moment just perfectly. Maybe you’ve got a hand full of Victory cards and need a Shepherd to sort them out. Perhaps you already have one Idol in hand and want another one to give out some Curses. Lots of options there.

Getting that Wish isn’t trivial, though. You have to have exactly 7 cards in play when you play your Leprechaun. This will normally include the Leprechaun itself. It also includes any Duration cards that are still in play from previous turns. It’s something to shoot for in your Leprechaun games, assuming you think you can get that Wish in time to draw it before the game ends.

It's probably pretty easy to utilize Wish to its full extent given how much we have already talked about wishing well.

And now for the most important question....how many Wishes in the pile?

Whoops, looks like they used the Cobbler art by mistake.

Contest: How can you gain multiple wishes in a single turn?

I've only come up with Bonfire/Villa so far. Any others?

Nope! In Irish folklore, Leprechauns were shoemakers.

Nocturne seems to be developing a smoking sub-theme. I'm not sure I've spotted anyone smoking in the artwork for previous expansions?

Strategically appalling, but... buy Mint from the Black Market while you have Crowns in play.

Well, you could play Black Market into Idol, getting a +action Boon, then play Leprechaun... unless you consider that +actions as well.

Why does it even give the option? Like, playing with Boons yesterday I had to resist trying to gain Will-o-Wisp with Earth's gift (discard treasure to gain a 4-cost card).

Wishing Well for a Wish is what is being referred to.

Well then why was the first "Wish" capitalized?

Maybe I misremembered how getting the option to gain a Will-O-Wisp came up, but I know I had to not try to gain Imp with Pilgrimage.

So with Possession the Possessor would gain the gold, but the possessed would gain the Hex right?

Wish is not the easiest thing to pull off quickly enough to be useful (although it was in my Storyteller game).  I think when a Leprechaun grants my wish in real life  :P I don't think he will limit me to 15 or so choices.  I want Wish to let me get any card up to cost $6 in the Dominion universe!  I think I'm house-ruling this one.   8)

So your Leprechauns will operate on the Black Market?

Initial impresions (probably wrong): very niche card. In an engine where you have enough control to play Leprechaun with exactly 7 cards, do you really need it?

My first game with leprechauns had throne room, Hamlet, inheritance, and patrol. Leprechaun was super strong and fast.

I have a hard time imagining it's good if you aren't getting wishes though. The power is in how it singlehandedly provides your payload.

I've not tried it yet, but my instinct that "enough control to play Leprechaun with exactly 7 cards" basically means "playing an engine with at least one village in it".

That's pretty frequent, isn't it? And maybe Leprechaun being in the kingdom is enough of a nudge for you to do it even if you wouldn't have otherwise?

Having now seen Exorcist, I'm not sure why there are 12 Wishes for Leprechaun but only 6 Ghosts for Exorcist (obviously there's no need for more than 6 Ghosts with Haunted Mirror). Wish is an action that is hard to gain, gives +1 Action when played (so it's easy to play), and returns itself to its pile. I assume with 12 Wishes they are much less likely to run out than the Ghosts. Why not, say, 10 Wishes and 8 Ghosts?

It should be reasonably common for there to be a Throne Room variant around with Leprechaun.

Maybe this explains the art on Envy. A leprechaun did it!
