Title: Is Cursed Gold a Gold?
Post by: SkyHard on October 24, 2017, 05:09:45 pm
My first game with Nocturne and I have a Bandit Fort and Cursed Gold. So, does the Cursed Gold count as Gold? If not, why?

No. Gold is one specific card. Just like fool's gold isn't a gold.

They have different names (even if the name of one contains the name of the other), so they are different cards.

Note that Cursed Gold is also not a Curse. (Nor is Bandit Fort a Bandit.)

Likewise, Native Village is neither a Native nor a Village, even though it's a village. Also, all Minion cards are Dominion cards but not vice versa. Mine and Mint are the same card, though.

:P

Note that whenever a card (or event) uses the name of a card, it means specifically "a card that has this exact name".

Which is why all those fan cards with Curse as a type are idiotic.

Hero says "Gain a Treasure", and Curse has the curse type. I don't love the idea, but I fail to see how it is idiotic, or otherwise incompatible with the rules of Dominion.

inb4 Donald makes another card with curse as a type just to show how its done.

If two cards had the Curse type, you wouldn't know, does "Curse" on existing cards mean the card or the type.

It's not ideal, but actually things would work pretty smoothly if you said that "gain a Curse" or "buy a Curse" meant the card and in all other cases it meant the card type.

I think you and I have different definitions of "smoothly", with your definition including that every player ever has to ask for clarification about how it works.

Well, by your definition Night cards don't "work smoothly". :-p

So anyway, it's not happening.

There are also pretty simple ways to proxy alt-Curse behaviour. The only reason to have a card have the Curse type is because you want it to have the Curse type - well, and perhaps you want it to behave a specific way with trashers. Neither is worth it.

Likewise, Adventurer isn't a Venture
Ruined Library isn't a Library
Ruined Market isn't a Market
Grand Market isn't a Market
Abandoned Mine isn't a Mine
Ruined Village isn't a Village

Biggest whopper of all.... Dominion isn't a Minion!

Dominion is kind of like a Princed Minion actually... every turn it gives you +1 Action, and every turn it makes you discard your hand.

...except it has you discard your hand at the end of your turn, not the beginning.

Now I'm waiting for a Prince Of Darkness promo that plays a card every Night phase!

Awesome name. But probably much weaker than Prince, as Prince gives you a free +1 action every turn.

Well, it wouldn't exactly be a problem if Dominion included a cheaper card than Prince...

Thematically, it would kinda feel right if Prince of Darkness cost a debt of two potions. But this is way overthinking a pun. (-8
