Title: Favorite Thematic Cards (part 2)
Post by: weesh on September 18, 2017, 04:11:50 pm
Rather than necro a 6 year old favor thread (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=919.0 (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=919.0)), how about a new one?

To mix things up, how about the cards/combos whose flavor is delightfully wonky, compared to the ones that are home runs?

So not Peasant, that tells a clear and interesting life story, or how young witch is unwilling to follow you into a chapel.

More like Salt the Earth, that shows you destroying one small part of the world so no one else can have it...and yet feeling some small amount of satisfaction as a result!

I love the idea of a monarch that doesn't want MORE money, he just wants more than his peers!  And the fastest way to do that is to get ahead, and then destroy everything else.

But far and away my favorite wonky flavor card is Magpie.  It conjures the image of a crazy old man hiding up in his keep, wondering how the kings around him have gotten more powerful by building smithies and villages and markets.  He has an army of magpies!  why isn't he the most powerful man around with the obviously superior strategy of sending out birds to find money and bring it back?!

But then it turns out if he Trains the army of magpies, so that they bring even more money back, he can become the most powerful man around.  the crazy old geezer was right! he just needed to push harder than anyone else would have, and suddenly he appears to be forward thinking :)

What cards do you guys like for the mental gymnastics you have to do to make sense of them?

My favorite is Capital.  You get a massive benefit right now, and if you make good use of it, you come out way ahead, and if you don't, you're behind.  Much better theme than Loan.

I didn't see this one mentioned in the other thread, and I'm not sure it's wonky, but I like:

Ambassador
He shows up bearing gifts: land and money! But these gifts were a poisoned chalice that made your kingdom cumbersome to manage. Your suspicions of his nefarious ulterior motives were confirmed later when he started delivering cursed objects.

I've done some mental gymnastics, and came to understanding, Duchess is pretty thematic.

It is not a coincidence she is called after a Duchy (she probably lives there!).

I love that one!  My play group likes the idea that she doesn't care who owns the property, as long as she gets to live elegantly, so she just attaches herself to anyone with money to buy the place she wants to live.

The freeloader doesn't help out that much either...

I've been cheating on dominion recently with "Last Will", a game built around surrounding yourself with freeloaders so they can help you spend your money faster.

I think the funniest card thematically is Catapult. How do you Catapult a whole Estate? And why would flinging a Moneylender at your enemies be a good idea?

I fail to see anything wrong with flinging moneylenders from a catapult.

my favorite catapult fodder thus far is tax collector.
it pleases me to put one in the bucket of a catapult, and it amuses me to send someone so hated to an enemy.

This all just makes me think of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, flinging cows at the enemies.  Too bad there isn't a livestock card.  We do have trust steed though! that's pretty close.

I also think it would be pretty funny to fling a feast at the enemy (If I ever actually used feast that is.  It would also be a horrible card to choose to catapult, other than for the laughs.)

But if you Catapult Trusty Steed, it doesn't even do anything to your opponent.

But arming the Catapult with a Charm, Relic, Talisman, or Crown is strangely effective. You can also launch your Loan over to do damage.

Or Harem... that would kill your opponent sense of beauty instantly

Yeah, but then you miss out on the arbitrary points towards the goal of having the best dominion that keeping the Harem would have given you.

Well this isn't exactly a strategy thread.

I'm an Engineer in real life.
In the game, you can let them help you, or you can be work them to death for a short term game.
In the words of Glados:
♫ that would be funny, if it weren't so sad ♫

Wedding is a Harem variant.

oh god.
in my last wedding game I collected 6 wives.

I like the idea of causing trouble by catapulting Contraband or Counterfeit. Presumably the police get involved in those cases.

If you can ever fling lawyers I'm sure you'd get a bonus for that!

From really bad card ideas:

Well-Defined Gains
Action - $3
+1 Card
+1 Action

Name a card, then reveal the top card of your deck. If you named it, gain a copy of it.

I just realized that there is something philosophical about wishing well.

If you wish for something crazy, you don't get it.
If you wish for what was already soon coming to you, you hasten it.

You don't get what you want by just wanting any ol' random great thing.
You get what you want by wanting what is already within your grasp, and that you took the effort to achieve already.

Alternatively, "wish" is pure magical silliness. Get whatever you want, right now.

Jester is really thematic. Always surprising, sometimes effective.

Jester is one of my fav cards, but I've never really gotten it...from a flavor perspective.  I just thought it was a silly mechanic flavored with a silly job.
What's the story you see in it?

Chariot Race is simply War, but it's the one-on-one situation that makes it come to life. I especially like "rigging" the event with Secret Passage or the like.

The symmetry of both Tournament and Knights invokes the impression of joust where both parties may be grounded out of their bootstraps.

Haggler. Vase for four shekels.

Golem is given a huge task to work on, but once he is started, he will carry it out no matter what, even the chore of an unwanted Mercenary.

Wish obviously.

Baron fancies himself to be some sort of real estate mogul, that is, he seems to pick up real Estates on a regular basis. He also loves to buy things. So he has to dispose of Estates regularly in order to bring in some money. Besides the fact that he has a somewhat shifty look to him, what is truly intriguing about him is that he always gets the same price for every Estate. You would think that with the the way the market is, he would get a little more for one over another, but completely ignoring "location, location, location", he keeps asking for the same amount each time. Definitely not a financial genius, but you can tell that from the people always whispering about him behind his back.

I absolutely love that Wishes are absurdly powerful yet cost $0. It's gloriously heartbreaking to struggle and suffer to get your precious Wish only to have a Swindler trash it for a Curse because it's worth nothing to him.

Like Tournament prizes (other than Duchies) and unlike Heirlooms or Travellers. I think the reason is that in a Leprechaun/Swindler or Tournament/Swingler kingdom, you'd have to take a possible swindle into account and take the risk, whereas you cannot choose your Heirloom. As for Travellers, the design decision is not as clear to me but I think it also helps a bit with the mnemonics of the traveller ladder.

Counterfeit (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Counterfeit) let's you double-spend your money, it even gives you two buys instead of your normal one. That's exactly how you counterfeit cryptocurrency.

A bit anachronistic, perhaps, but I think it works ;)

I feel this way about Duchess. You get to choose whether to gain a Duchess when you gain a Duchy. So, was she running the Duchy as an independent state before I incorporated it into my kingdom, and now she swears fealty to me? Some kind of fealty that is when she also helps everyone else!

Whereever there's an Ironworks there's likely to be a Mining Village, a Smithy and an Ironmonger.

we came across a wonky flavor to a combo yesterday.

you can scheme your schemes on a conspirator board to always have conspirators be active...

The flavor of the interaction, is you have a bunch of people scheming, but never doing anything...except riling up the random conspirators when they show up at the meetings, who actually go out to get things done...

schemer 1: this is an outrage someone should do something about this!
schemer 2: yeah, someone has to stand up to the man!
conspirator: YEAH LET'S GO!  LEEEEROOOOY JENKINGS! (runs from the room)
schemer 2: same time next week?
schemer 1: yeah, don't forget it'll be your turn to to bring the snacks.

It's all the sadder when you don't find any conspirators.

(edit: lol, my member title is conspirator right now)

Guides, Hunting Parties, lead to Gold at Tunnels

Nearly all the cards involving royalty allow you to perform additional effects

Nearly all the cards involving land gets you pts.

Hunting Parties are not particularly good at skipping Tunnels for Gold.
