Title: haunted castle attack?
Post by: Reepacheep on August 15, 2017, 06:43:41 pm
The Haunted Castle acts like an attack when you gain it.
But it's not labeled as an attack type.
Why or why not?

Attacks are cards that hurt your opponents when you play them, like Witch or Relic. You can't play a Haunted Castle, so it can't be an attack. Also, IGG is not an attack because it only hurts your opponents when you gain it. Moat would do nothing against it even if it were an attack.

Worth noting that even though Noble Brigand (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Noble_Brigand) IS an Attack card, players can't use reactions to protect themselves against the thing it does when it is bought.

Attack doesn't mean "things that hurt your opponent", it means "things that Moat, Squire, Soldier etc. care about". Apparently those cards aren't supposed to care about Haunted Castle.

They can use reactions, such as Tunnel and Watchtower. Just not ones that trigger when a card is played.

Welcome to the forum!

There are other cards that act like attacks, but can't be moated, Possession, I'll Gotten Gains, heck you could even argue Embassy has an attack like ability if the other players don't want silver. I think it is the way that it is because it's simple to track when a player plays an attack card, as opposed to when an "attack like ability" happens or is bought. The former is spelled out pretty clearly in this game, the latter leads to a lot of grey area.

Oh right, another common question that's worth noting... if someone plays Pirate Ship (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Pirate_Ship) or Minion (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Minion), they have played an attack, even if they plan on choosing the option on the card that doesn't hurt/affect you. So you can still reveal Moat (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Moat) or Diplomat (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Diplomat), for example. In fact you have to choose if you're revealing those before the person who played the card chooses which option they're taking.

Similarly Legionary; you can reveal reactions before they reveal their Gold.
