Title: Gwent
Post by: yaffle on May 02, 2017, 05:18:49 am
Is anyone on the closed beta for Gwent? I've just signed up but... now waiting for an invite.

Apologies if there's already a thread on this - I did look.

If you are playing is it something worth taking some time to learn? I should add I've never played any of the Witcher games so don't know the background to it.

I liked it, certainly worth a try.

I find it boring. I described it on the Hearthstone reddit as playing at "duelling calculators".

I tried it briefly. I have never played any of the Witcher games either, but that didn't bother me.

It's like, sure it's fun and all, but there is only so much time I have to allot to leisure activities, and I ended up setting Gwent aside for now. Certainly worth a try, and distinct enough from other online collectible card games to have reason to exist.

I think I ended up playing more Hearthstone over it due to Gwent's slower pacing, at least according to how I perceive it. I remember not being bothered by game pace when playing War of Omens.

But... that sounds fascinating.

Gwent can go straight to hell.

I really enjoy Gwent, it's still pretty small card base right now too so if you sign up for the Open Beta collecting everything doesn't actually seem to out of reach. (I've never played Witcher, but the card game is solid). It's not much like Hearthstone so I can see why people who might like one might not like the other. The only real resources are cards and turns, there can be a lot of bluffing and guessing about deck building, which appeals to me.

I've pretty much set Hearthstone aside for now for Gwent.

I think i'll give it a try as Quest Rogue is severely testing my patience at the moment. I don't have the cards to build a complete deck with an effective response and the only time i've beaten it has been poor draws on their part.

Yeah, I do not like the current Hearthstone meta. Quest Rogue and Warrior are extremely irritating to play against. Gwent will probably have it's own meta that I'll get sick of eventually, but right now it is just fun to play a new game and collecting feels like you make a lot more progress. To compare, you need to mill 3 common cards in Gwent to get 1 common card, and you need to dust 8 in Hearthstone. Plus they're doing lots of rebalancing right now so you can mill cards for full value whenever they rebalance them which means your collection is a lot more fluid right now.

Is there a drafting mode in Gwent yet? I signed up a while ago but I don't really play much constructed in any game, so it lost my interest fast.

When I get bored of Hearthstone I go with this instead: http://play.warofomens.com/

No. Not sure how drafting would work in Gwent. It seems like construction is key to how the game is built and not sure if it makes as much sense as in other games. I might get surprised in the future though.
