Title: Collecting
Post by: ashersky on April 09, 2017, 04:15:21 pm
Anyone into collecting anything?  I'm thinking more of the physical object variety, as opposed to Pokemon or speed run records.

I'm getting into the fascinating but unfortunately expensive world of horology (specifically watches at this point).  I've uncovered quite the slew of websites, forums, and blogs dedicated to it (much like f.ds is here for Dominion).  It's also gotten me back onto eBay after years of inactivity...

Any interesting items you collect?  Amazing collections?  Crazy obsessions?

I collect board games, although my collection isn't that amazing. I would also collect guns and other weapons but since those are pretty expensive, my collection so far is just one sword and one airgun.

I collect DVDs. My catalog, with over 1900 titles currently:

I also collect board games; I have probably close to 200.

If I had more motivation, I've thought of collecting elements.

Is there an official distributor?  Homemade?

Did it bug you when Blu-Ray came out?  I had hundreds of DVDs, but with the advent of HD and digital downloads, stopped buying them.

A miniature wargames company called Games Workshop. They are specifically for a game of theirs.

Vinyl Records

I have around 5000 or so. Huge range of genres, eras, etc.

Stopped buying them a few years ago when we started having kids and I sold my turntables and converted the listening room into a nursery. Hope to have a listening room again one day. Occasionally buy vinyl at shows which I hardly ever get to go to anymore.

Also guns and ammunition although that hobby is also on hiatus with the kids.

Finally, some silver coins such as Britannia, Philharmonics, Canadian Maples, and the Perth stuff (koalas, lunars, kookaburras), as well as the short lived ATB USA coin set in silver.

My biggest collection habit is with movies and TV shows. I have a decent number of movies and a ton of TV seasons. I also have a collection of Elemental Hero cards from Yugioh.

The rest of my collections are very small or specific. For example, I have a physical copy of every Green Day and Muse album.

This is all aside from Dominion, of course. If a new Dominion set or promo comes out, it has to be in my hands as soon as possible.

For awhile I dreamed of collecting all the Arden Shakespeares.  I'd buy them at used book stores, etc.  2nd edition is definitely doable, but 1st would be amazing.

I find it amusing somehow that you need to introduce Games Workshop :)

Never really got into it. But Warhammer is quite the institution.

Blu-Ray, not at all. I just see them as the latest type of DVDs. Now I'll buy Blu-Ray or DVD; usually won't pay extra for Blu-Ray unless it's a movie where it really matters. Digital on the other hand does bug me a bit; because I can see a day when physical media no longer exists; and I'll be forced to switch.

I prefer SBG. I know I don't need to buy a new book every few years for my army, and when you have 5, that would be quite an investment.

I have a box of several hundred CDs the local used shop didn't take when I decided to get rid of all of them (also thanks to kids). I almost put them on the curb a couple weeks ago when I was cleaning out the attic. You can have them if you can come pick them up.

I totally would but we're moving across the country so we're trying to get rid of as much crap as we can. You wanna ship them to CA? haha

No problem as long as you foot the bill :)

How do you keep track of all your vynils? In fact, how do you store them? My main difficulty when trying to collect stuff is space... I have a modest conmemorative coin collection, maybe 100 or 200 of them (assuming I've hid them well enough for family not to use them as spare change), but that's about it.

Well, I started collecting the vinyl way ahead of trying to catalog them. I store them in road cases like these (http://www.ebay.com/p/osp-45-utility-truck-trunk-ata-flight-tour-road-case-hard-rubber-lined-wheels/1900006359). They are sorted alphabetically by artist. I started at some point trying to log them in a spreadsheet with things like the label number and tags like import, colored, reissue, extra inserts, etc. I think maybe I got to the letter D.

I thought about making some sort of database app similar to myfitnesspal that could scan barcodes and stuff, but life...

I have accidentally bought a record I already owned a few times in case you are wondering.

I collect dust.

OK, OK, we also collect books.  I have a number of signed first editions and then just a few (literal) tons of other books, mostly SFF but not all.

We actually left a bunch behind when we moved across the country, for weight considerations.

Edit:  one of the most interesting books we have is a copy of Grey's Anatomy that some med student used for cadaver dissection... in 1898.

I actually have a small but weird collection. It started off as a joke when I was at a friend's house and he told his dad about my awesome collection of dishcloths I had under my bed. I just went along with it for a while, and some laughs were had. When I got home, I actually started to collect them. Due to the space issue, I only collect unique ones with special prints. And of a certain sponge material that's really popular in Sweden. Wettex. I'm getting close to 20 of them stored in binders (card game player at heart). I often forget I have them, so I miss them in stores all the time. It's fun, though.
