Title: Is Ferry on Adventurer any better than Gold?
Post by: ackmondual on March 30, 2017, 02:54:03 am
Recall Ferry is a $3 event, place your -2 cost token an on action pile
No specific Kingdom.  More so an overall question given the vast, various situations that could be encountered

I'm thinking.. not really.  Adventurer cycles your deck quicker, it doesn't compete with Gold anymore, and $4 makes it more affordable it.  However, it should still net you $2 unless you can strip out enough of your Coppers.  This makes it on par with Silver, but does eat up an action.

Interesting question, don't think it's very good. Ferry/Adventurer BM might be better than Mandarin or Merchant Ship BM, but not by much. And if you're building an engine, then putting Ferry on the engine pieces just seems better.

I love this line so much. Gives a lot of insight into the power of Adventurer.

Out of curiosity (I'm sure DXV's answered this somewhere before, but I'm too lazy to go find it), I know the game was new and all, but did playtesters really think this card was overpowered at $5, let alone $4?

It wasn't like that. Adventurer looked like it should cost $6, somehow. It cost $6. We bought it some, seemed fine. We never tried it at $5, or talked about trying it at $5, or anything.

Several early cards have the same story. It was a while before "should this thing we're buying nevertheless be cheaper" was a thing (or knowing not to buy the thing and so making it cheaper because we weren't buying it).

Opportunity cost of not buying a Silver makes this worse than letting Adventurer stay at $6.

Or, for that matter, the opportunity cost on not Ferrying a more powerful card.  I could only see this being a thing if Adventurer is the best card in the kingdom, which is really hard to imagine.

Ferry/Adventurer opening means you essentially paid (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/2/2a/Coin4.png/16px-Coin4.png) for a slightly worse Chancellor, and skipped one of your opening turns.

For that matter, has anyone in the forum ever simulated Adventurer-BM (or Adventurer-Moneylender-BM) with Adventurer's cost reduced to $5 or even $4? I'd also expect Adventurer to still do badly at $5, but it would be nice to have actual data.
(After all, Rebuild-BM becomes worse than pure BM when Rebuild's price is increased to $6, so the difference between $5 and $6 is quite huge.)

At $5, it's got to be better than pure BM at least. It's already marginally better than pure BM at $6.

Yes, it's clearly better than pure BM (even if it cost $7 😉), but that doesn't say much for its strength. What I wonder is at which price point Adv.-BM becomes reasonably strong, i.e. it should at least be able to compete with Smithy-BM, if not JoaT-BM.

I think at $4 it would be about as good as Smithy-BM: A single Adventurer would still draw less $ than a Smithy on average (since more than 2/3 of your cards will be Treasures for most of the game), but you can buy more Adventurers since they can't draw each other dead. Also, Adventurer-BM likes adding cantrips, unlike Smithy-BM.
