Title: Vault and Hermit

If some other player plays Vault and you've a Hermit in your hand can you then choose to discard Hermit in order to trash it and gain a Madman?

No, when you discard Hermit in response to Vault you're discarding it from your hand, not from play.

Welcome to the board! Note that the answer also applies to any discarding other than from in-play; such as using Cellar, Sentry, etc.
