Don't worry; once this is released, there will be way more than just two Events.

Is the May 25th release date the "I can pick it up from my FLGS" date or the "it gets put on the delivery truck to my FLGS" date? Will I be able to play it that night, or do I need to wait a few days after that?

In that case, you'd better get to work on previews #6-10.   ;D

My friendly local online game store told me previously that they were expecting it to be shipped on the 17th and arrive on the 18th, then the release date.  I'm assuming the same timeline just a week later.

Man, I avoided Dominionstrategy for a long time because people started to talk about adventures and I wanted to discover these cards by playing them online, not by reading strategy articles about card I don't have played yet. Now, same thing will happen for Empires  :'(

This is terrible since my local gamestore always has board game specials on long weekends (a few days before the 25th in this case).

Yes, Amazon has mysteriously known this for a while.

Amazon put up the wrong date.  When they found out, they pulled some strings and called in some favours to get the release date pushed back so that they were right all along.

I'm following "Dominion Welt" on Facebook, they're usually early to announce the German version. So far, they haven't announced anything. I think Adventures came out in September, I wouldn't expect Empires to be any earlier

 Neue Nachricht von: just4fun0422
Hello, just wanted to make you aware that the shipping date for this item is incorrect. It looks like the Manufacturer has changed the street date for this item to 6/2/15. I will be sending you more information as I receive it. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, and appreciate your patience.

So 2nd of June is the date?!

Talking about the release, has Rio Grande actually switched the printer or whoever was responsible for the mild production issues of Adventures? It's not a big thing but it'd be nice if the production quality would be similar to that of the previous expansions.

...allegedly.

Personally, I'm holding off until copies are actually in customers' hands to find out if the card flexion, colour consistency and corner radii are back to normal. Also, whether the insert, the key strip, the rulebook's image resolution and the box texture are OK this time round.

I don't know how many of those RGG is even aspiring to fix. Card flexion and rulebook resolution yes, the others... probably not?

In fact it's the same printer under new owners - Cartamundi bought the plant from Hasbro.

RGG is of course trying to fix everything anyone complained about. I won't know how it turns out until the cards are in my hands; anyone shy is unlikely to suffer from waiting a few days for early reports.

They are intentionally the regular back (not the randomizer back) to match the Adventures ones.
Title: Re: Release date

Because we had so much fun doing this last time...

How to approximate the probabilities of playing with X Events/Landmarks* without having to shuffle them into the randomizer deck, because mixing blue- and brown-backed cards just makes you feel dirty:

Limit of 2 Events/Landmarks

Limit of 4 Events/Landmarks

*Assumes 260 Kingdom Cards and 55 Events/Landmarks.

And here's a recursive formula for calculating the exact probabilities:
R = 260 (Kingdom Randomizers)
E = 55 (Events + Landmarks)
T = 315 (R + E)
K = 10 (Kingdom Drawn)

P[0] = C(R,K)
       ------
       C(T,K)

P[N] = P[N-1]*(E-N+1)*(K+N-1)
       ----------------------
            (T-K-N+1)*N

The "funny" thing is that DXV himself has suggested a maximum limit of two events/landmarks in total per game, and he has also said elsewhere that he in fact recommends playing with two events in every game (pre-Empires).

Now that we'll have 34 events and 21 landmarks, we have a total of 55 landscape-oriented non-card cards. Using the suggested maximum of two such cards in every game means that each one will be used in every 27.5 games on average, and we still don't have a total of 275 kingdom cards, so each non-card won't come up exactly as frequently as each kingdom card, at least not yet, although it's really close (we have 236 kingdom piles pre-Empires).

Would there be a problem if one included three events/landmarks in some games? I mean when it comes to balance? I'm sure there's a reason a maximum of two is recommended.

I don't remember him making any such recommendation. I think he said something along the lines of, if you want to put two Events in every game, go for it; you can shuffle the Events separately from the other randomizers.

Just to keep the game from getting crazy complex. But if your group can handle complex, do whatever you like. When playing with my main group, we almost always put out three: either 2 Events and 1 Landmark or 1 Event and 2 Landmarks. It's a holdover from Empires playtesting.

Jay (Rio Grande Games) is 100% in charge of when the rulebook goes up. I don't think Donald ever has any information about that.

Assuming 260 and 55, the expected number of Events/Landmarks per game if you don't limit them is about 2.11 (exact value: 55*10/(260+1)). It happens that the suggested maximum is lower than this (but this wouldn't be the case if there were more Kingdom cards).

(Note that even without limiting the number you play with, a given Event or Landmark will show up slightly less often than a given Kingdom card - every 26.1 games vs. every 26; I'm sure there is an elegant way to show where the +1 comes from in the above formula, but my hand-wavy explanation is that the last card you draw will always be a Kingdom card.

And of course Young Witch throws things off a little bit for the 2-3 cost cards, and Black Market further skews things if you want to account for that somehow. Worrying about playing with every card exactly the same number of times seems pointless.)

I'm a statistician, so I know what you mean.  :) Actually, I'm thinking that the Young Witch game "should" include a bane that should be taken out from the randomizer deck, so that a total of 260 kingdom cards should be used in 25.9 games, if you catch my drift.

IMHO the cards used in a Black Market deck shouldn't count towards any of them being used as a kingdom card, but I have a houserule in which only 113 cards (exactly half of the 226 cards not being used in the current kingdom, even though YW once again complicates things a bit) are being used at a time (it's rather difficult shuffling 200+ cards, even with sleeves). It seems like I need to up that number to 125 now, which is perfectly fine with me (split piles should probably be shuffled "internally" in advance). These cards are determined randomly in all Black Market games.

I also agree that it's pointless to find a way to play with all cards the exact same number of times, but being a statistician, it's fun to dream about it.  ;)

You're right about the recommendation thing. I mean, he said it, but it wasn't in a public forum. I listed somewhere (I think it was on BGG) that I wondered if someone could recommend 50 kingdom cards that would be best to use to showcase as many interesting game mechanics as possible while keeping each element visible enough.

I was going to sing in an opera, and for stage performers, it's generally a lot of waiting in between different scenes, especially during rehearsals, so I collected some of my colleagues and put in Dominion games anywhere we got the time for them. Going to an island for these rehearsals and performances meant that I had somewhat limited space for game accessories in my bag, so I figured I wanted to use about 50 kingdom cards, and then some events.

Donald X. replied to me in a private e-mail message, saying that he recommended bringing all 20 (at the time) events, using two in every game. So we did, and it seemed like a perfect number, even though some of the players had never played Dominion before. I think I'll go for two combined events/landmarks per game in the Empires era, at least initially. Thanks for your feedback! It's greatly appreciated!  :)

The easiest thing to do if you're worried about Event/Landmark probabilities and want to play with 2 most of the time is to play with 3 Events/Landmarks 3/26 of the time.

(Tangentially related: I messed around at one point with determining the largest group of Recommended Sets of 10 with no overlapping cards. The best I found was 12 Kingdoms, which happened to not include any single-expansion sets; I was a little surprised I couldn't do a bit better, though I suppose half the available cards is pretty good. I think it'd be neat to have a collaborative effort to try to come up with 26 "interesting" Kingdoms without duplication, once Empires is released, since 260 is a nice round number and we can just consider the Bane a special case until we get another promo or something.)

Or 30 in 259 games with "my" use of YW.  ;)

(That would be great! Or maybe remove 9, 19 or 29 cards from Donald X.'s post in the "What I would change" thread and then make X kingdoms of the remaing cards?)

More probabilities:

Events only, limit of 2
0 Events: 28.67%
1 Event: 34.32%
2 Events: 37.02%

Landmarks only, limit of 2
0 Landmarks: 45.39%
1 Landmark: 35.17%
2 Landmarks: 19.44%

Events/Landmarks, limit of 2 each
0 Events, 0 Landmarks: 14.23%
1 Event, 0 Landmarks: 15.86%
2 Events, 0 Landmarks: 15.29%
0 Events, 1 Landmark: 9.80%
1 Event, 1 Landmark: 12.05%
2 Events, 1 Landmark: 13.32% (19.01% if limiting to 3 total)
0 Events, 2 Landmarks: 4.64%
1 Event, 2 Landmarks: 6.40% (9.12% if limiting to 3 total)
2 Events, 2 Landmarks: 8.41% (0% if limiting to 3 total)

(Note that the Events only and Landmarks only distributions are not independent - that is, you can't get the probabilities in the last table just by multiplying probabilities from the first two. The distribution of Events and Kingdom cards in the shuffled randomizer deck tells you something about the distribution of Landmark and Kingdom cards, and vice versa. The easiest way to see this is to consider the case where there is only one Landmark available. If we shuffle the Events and Kingdom cards, in order to have 0 Events the first 10 cards in our deck must be Kingdom cards, so if we now randomly insert the Landmark there are only 10 places in can go in order to be drawn (before each of those 10 Kingdom cards). In order to draw 1 Event, the tenth Kingdom card is now in the 11th slot, so there are 11 places to insert the Landmark in order for it to be drawn. And so on. The more Events we're playing with, the more Kingdom+Event cards we had to draw, and thus the more slots available for drawing Landmarks.)

Scout is the perfect bane for YW! Even that card can have it's appeal. Or maybe you just want to be Young Witched?

Bane is a 2 or 3 cost, scout costs 4

Just put your ferry token on it before the game starts.

Does it help that it should cost less? Something like: Choose a 2 or 3 cost card OR Scout as bane?

Whoever designs a KC-Scout kingdom wins.

Roadrunner set up a game with a Scout + 9VP card kingdom... and we ignored Scout!

From a practical standpoint, it's really hard to think of a case where KC-Nobles isn't better.

No, maybe. RGG is currently expecting it Friday, and will ship it then; RGG currently lists May 31st as the street date. I can't speak for how fast things get shipped out by CSI.

Anyone got a good place to preorder or order this yet?

I bought from Cardhaus last year but I was disappointed that they shipped several days after Amazon had Adventures listed on Prime. It just didn't seem worth it.

So I've been waiting for it to show up on Amazon, but I keep searching for it and nothing comes up. So I'll have to wait a day or two more I think.

Or I could go to a FLGS, but psh, who has those???

Man, it's not looking good. I guess there was another delay. I did a quick google search, and now there's no Dominion Empires on Amazon. Nobody else really has any specific release dates.

When do we see rules?

I thought we would see them today for sure.

We'll probably see them shortly after the game releases, which seems delayed again as of now. Whatever makes a better product, but I am getting very hyped.

There's a gaming con this Saturday in Los Angeles. I heard that Rio Grande has a demo booth there most years. I have no idea if they will have Empires there or not, especially if it is shipping out Friday, but you never know. Someone might be able to get me a free badge, so I might check it out, and see if anything interesting comes up. Fingers crossed.

EDIT: I just checked the Demo Schedule, and Dominion is not listed there. Here is a link to the Con that is this weekend. http://www.strategicon.net/index.php

I guess this is just something people aren't going to get tired of saying.

I could have delayed the previews; I found out the release date slipped on Friday, after posting the teasers. Should I have pushed back the previews? Any takers?

I could have just not had previews at all; then there wouldn't be this gap here between previews and release. Any takers for that?

I am not going to just continue to preview cards. I don't care how many takers there are for that. If you want, you can pretend that "only" 3 cards were previewed per day, and count the other previews as bonuses. Wow, 17 bonus previews. He really does care.

I found out about the initial delay that Friday, not the most recent delay, which I found out about yesterday.

I weighed it in my mind. Who do I want to be better friends with... Jay? crj? Somehow I went with Jay.

And I mean. Telling people exactly what the delay was, at the time, meant being wrong extra times. It was pushed back a few days, then a few days more, then a few days more.

Realistically, I don't think I'd agree with you in terms of promotion. However, I don't know how much advertising Dominion gets, because I never see a Dominion ad. Rio Grande just announces a set will come out, and people know. If Rio Grande released the game and announced it when they did, I wonder how poorly that would actually affect sales.

Yeah, I have all the other expansions, so it'd be between Adventures and Empires. I'll probably pick up Adventures first though.

So, BGG is shipping today. What are the odds that if I place a Rush delivery order on Amazon the minute they have it in stock, that the game will be in my hands by Friday evening? Or Saturday evening? Trying to see if I'll be able to play this weekend with friends. I'm not counting on it being around that soon, just trying to hope for the best.

Also do we know how many cards are in it yet? Gotta order new sleeves.

Quoting the announcement announced on f.ds:

EDIT: Jay talks about the mechanics: https://boardgamegeek.com/article/21657662#21657662

A bit more to chew on: It has 300 cards and 96 metal tokens. There are cards you can buy now and pay for later, piles with two different cards, and Landmarks which add new ways to score. VP tokens and Events return from previous sets.

Also, assuming Beyond Awesome stays true to their name and is right about shipping being today, when do the first stores receive it? Tomorrow, maybe Thursday? I would assume that will be the day where we will see the rules aswell.

Actually, Donald X. or Jay mentioned something about shipping today and I read it somewhere. As far as I know, they were assembling the sets over the weekend and the plan is/was to ship them out today.

This is true. They will arrive at stores by June 6th and 10th, and then the rules will be released probably by the end of this week.

As Donald wrote, we will begin shipping Empires to our distributors today. We expect to continue shipping through Monday and expect to be able to hold to the June 8th date for our distributors to start shipping meaning many stores will have the games next Thursday or Friday. Thanks for your patience.

The latest thing was, they gave us samples that were miscut, and so there was a delay while we considered our options, but it turned out that these were in some way explained by incompetence in sending us samples; a bunch of boxes of the actual shipment were opened and were fine.

Is today The Day When We See The Rules?

Since the most recent estimates from Jay are that they won't be in stores until the end of next week (and optimistically we can guess maybe slightly earlier some places based on his guessed ship dates), I don't think it is likely they will be posted until at least this weekend. Even that might just be wishful thinking. I would not be surprised if it wasn't until the first boxes start showing up next week.

My expectation is early next week. I think the rules will be released as close as possible to the actual date that the set becomes available to the public. Otherwise it will just be us complaining about card art and wording until someone actually gets their hands on the game and can offer their impressions.

As opposed to the forum complaining about card art and wording despite the impressions of someone who has their hands on the game?

I've never ordered from them, but did you make an account?  There's probably order history somewhere.  If you didn't receive a confirmation email shortly after placing the order and there isn't any order history for you to find, you should probably contact them ASAP, and maybe check to see if you were charged.

I made an account much later after the order. I wish I made it beforehand, oh well. I'll wait a bit until people start reporting they get Empires I think.

I just got back from my FGLS's Dominion Tournament in support of Empires (top 3 prizes: vouchers for Empires).

The owner of the game store isn't happy that he hasn't gotten the expansion yet, and he claims that he's hearing from his distributors that it's been pushed back to end of June, and not this week as expected. He says he's heard that RGG hasn't shipped it to distributors yet.

I was expecting to pick it up late this week, but end of June is a few weeks away.

Any word on what I should really be expecting?

So they're expecting many stores to have them by June 10.  Many isn't all, so maybe your store is one of the unlucky ones.

Amazon got Adventures about 3 or 4 weeks after release.

I seem to remember it being on Prime before I got my copy, that I preordered. I think mine was only 1, maybe 2 weeks late? I'm currently going with the "wait for Amazon" approach right now but maybe a pre order is smarter
