Title: Let's Discuss Adventures Cards: Wine Merchant

Still a better Lex Luthor than Jesse Eisenberg.

-How does this card compare to Baron? Is it better?
-How harmful is the penalty of not using $2 to get the card back?
-Is this card better in Big Money, or an Engine?
-How many Wine Merchants do you want in both cases?
-How does this card rank among other $5 costs?

My thoughts:

-If you want 1 of these, it's for spiking.  Have a great turn with lots of (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/6/6d/Coin.png/16px-Coin.png) and a +Buy, and maybe later on in the shuffle you can spend the (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/3d/Coin2.png/16px-Coin2.png) to get it back.  Decent play in weak engines.

-In an engine that draws itself every turn, you really need more than 1 of these for it to be worth it.  With 2, you're essentially getting +(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/6/6f/Coin6.png/16px-Coin6.png) a turn, which makes them Golds with +buy.  With 3, you're getting +(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/c/cc/Coin10.png/16px-Coin10.png) and 3 extra buys.  That's a lot of moolah.  And you always have that extra +(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/3d/Coin2.png/16px-Coin2.png) if you *really* need it.

This is super amazing payload.

Considering the card effects, this is probably the best-named card in all of Dominion.

I would like there to be a Cheese Merchant to go with my Wine Merchant.

When my opponents are angry, I tell them: "You should have bought W(h)ine Merchant."

It's a little better than Baron, because it doesn't require to have estate in your hand,a although the 2$ penalty nulifies it. Thepenalty is pretty annoying if you ask be, because 1 Wine Merchant is just a 5$ Woodcutter if you get him back from the tavern the turn you play him. But it's good when you have a really bad hand, you can just play that treasure and get him back at least. In Big Money, this card won't have a much of use in late game (since you barely get the 2$ unspent, unless you have 10$=<). But in engines, it works so amazing as Krieg and Wero said already.

An important thing that you probably know but most people don't notice at first is that you don't pay $2 per Wine Merchant, you get to shuffle all of them back with just $2 left over at the end of a turn. So in a way it's like a weird Poor House / Fool's Gold hybrid with a much lower penalty if you miss.

Just one of these isn't so bad either for spiking early $7 hands for King's Court or whatever. With trashers like Steward or Remake you'll have dud $2 turns often enough that you might get it back for free.

It's not the easiest card to incorporate with its cost and it's drawback but it certainly has its uses.

Since Wine Merchant is a pure payload card, you want to get it in the mid- to late-game. It doesn't help you spiking $5-cost cards more than Silver and you spent $5 on buying WM so buying it early almost always has to be a mistake. You want it later to spike cards that cost more than $5 which might even just be a Gold in a junk-heavy game. It's pretty good in Big Money but I can't fathom a scenario where this card would push your strategy towards BM. It's far less reliable than Gold but it has the +buy going for it which is going to matter slightly more in engines, I would assume, but then you should get multiples if you have the spare actions. In BM you probably only want one and use it to get at least Province-Duchy in one turn, or double Province, ideally.

Sorry for necro and being maybe more a rules question:

But with thronies and KC its kinda strong, isn't it?!
Will you get the +4 twice / thrice (?) with just the need of leaving (2) left,
it may be not as strong as KC'ed Bridge - but not bad either

It's pretty alright. Yeah, you get the extra stuff. Just don't try it with Royal Carriage, since the card has to be in play for that to work.
