Title: Soothsayer and Reaction Cards
Post by: amoffett11 on March 16, 2016, 03:01:03 pm
Short version:  Can you reveal a Reaction Card you draw after being attacked by Soothsayer?

Long version:  I encountered situation playing an IRL game yesterday, I would play a Soothsayer, my opponent would take his curse and draw his card, and would draw Horse Traders.  He asked if he could then reveal the Horse Traders, and I wasn't sure.  We went with not revealing the Horse Traders.

Thinking about it now, I don't see how you could reveal a reaction card.  What if you draw Moat?  It's not like it can prevent an attack, you've already taken your curse and you've already drawn a card; it's a bit of a Catch-22.  Horse Traders is a situation though where if you can get away with this, you definitely want to for that +1 card next turn, so I said I would check.

I apologize if this has been asked and answered before, I looked through the forums a bit and couldn't find anything.  I know for example that you reveal reaction cards you draw with a revealed Secret Chamber, but I think that's a different situation.

You are correct that you can't.  Reactions like Horse Traders and and Most need to be revealed right when the attack is played.  If you are drawing for Soothsayer, you're beyond that point and into resolution.

Correct, because then it is still the moment of an attack card played. Compare also with Pirate Ship or Minion, where you can / have to react, before you know wether "attacked" at all.

With Watchtower, you gain the curse and then trash it, so you can still draw a card (though I'm not sure how useful this is, because you have a Watchtower anyway).

With Trader, you can gain a Silver instead of the Curse, but then you didn't gain the Curse, so you don't draw a card.

If you have a Lighthouse or Champion in play, you aren't affected by the attack and therefore can't gain a Curse to draw a card even if you want to.

At least this is how I read it.

That is correct, but you can't use a Watchtower or Trader that you draw from Soothsayer because it will be too late if you've already drawn.

Well, sometimes you do pick up Watchtower only for the reaction. Those games are usually not the same where Soothsayer is good though.

I meant that much of the time, if you have a Watchtower in hand, you're going to be drawing up to 6 anyway, leaving the card drawn from Soothsayer moot. (Sure, there are exceptions like Prince or duration draw, or if you had another terminal to play instead of Watchtower, but often, you're planning to draw with Watchtower when you have it in hand).
