Title: Treasure Chest Compilation - Art/Name Suggestions
Post by: mith on February 25, 2016, 12:38:29 pm
Current Card List (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=10093.msg569866#msg569866)

One thing that has come up in the past as a blocker for card images is finding appropriate art (preferably public domain). This thread is for suggesting possible art for contest winners, so that LastFootnote (or whoever) can more easily mock up the cards.

You can also use this thread to suggest new names for cards - eHalcyon's Storyteller in particular needs a new name because of the conflict with the official card which came out later. The final name is up to the designer of the card, but if you think you have a more appropriate name for any of the cards, feel free to throw them out - worst that can happen is an epic flame war leading to a mass exodus from the site they'll say no.

People seemed to not like the name Recycle from long ago when Recycle was chosen. Shipyard was deemed to be an appropriate replacement name. Plus it would probably be easier to find art to fit that. I would recommend changing the name from Recycle to Shipyard.

I have an idea for a replacement name for Storyteller: Bard. It's a synonym for Storyteller, but unlike Storytellers, they tell their stories with music.

There's also Playwright that could work.

Playing Company, Travelling Players, and Raconteur were eHalcyon's suggestions in the other thread (along with Bard from LibraryAdventurer).

Raconteur is too similar to Storyteller, no? The other suggestions seem pretty good.

Art for shipyard, other suggestions are welcome of course. Mocked it up. First time doing this, so don't mock. If someone else wants to make a prettier version the link to the picture is here (http://games-frontier.tumblr.com/post/109500107607).

Other suggested images for other people's cards. EDITS: Of course these are just suggestions, I certainly don't mean to dictate the card art for all of the cards in the set, but I do enjoy searching for images and think the ones below would be pretty good. If a card creator specifically dislikes the card art suggestion, post and I'll remove the suggestion.

The theme of the card is somebody performing a story for an audience at this harvest celebration. Like, each new action card you play is an additional line to the story, which has a bit of an improv play-to-the-audience feel to it.  So Playwright doesn't fit as well here, though I think it's great in general.  I also feel like Bard may be more fitting to a castle of nobles than a celebration of peasants.

@yuma, the image needs to go behind the frame.  If you have a link to the source image, somebody can help with that.

Yeah I know... All I had access to was Microsoft paint and I don't think it can do that. I understand that photoshop or GIP (sp?) can but I don't have easy access to those. The source image is hyperlinked in the same post as the mock up.

Here are some more. Semi-intentionally and interestingly I am finding a lot of good art that features women.

Elixir

Prefecture (this is actually more descriptive of a prefect... a person who works in a prefecture)

It would be good to include a link to the source so that credit can be given.  And permission should be sought if the image isn't public domain or doesn't have an appropriate license available.

For some reason I was looking through Alayna Lemmer's website (http://www.alayna.net/portfolio.html) (she's done some art for Dominion, like the Champion line I think).  She has some pieces that might work well for some of these:

Florist
(http://www.alayna.net/images/gallery/fullsize/gardener.jpg)

Bard (if that ends up being chosen)

These might actually have been used for other games, I'm sort of unclear on exactly what these are from.  I think they both look very Dominion-y though.

I'll include links at a later date, but all are included in the hyperlink within the quote.

As for permission... I'll leave that for others once it is decided what art will actually be used.

Here's a possibility for Prawn Shop, if it were to be renamed to something Fishy:

I now favour "Travelling Players" as a new name for Storyteller.  I think it fits best with the intended theme of the card and it sort of calls back to Wandering Minstrel.

Mountain Pass is going to need a new name now.  But is there another name that thematically ties in with Quarry, Bridge and Highway?

Uh... Brick Road? :P

Just "Road" might work.

EDIT: You could even find some art of a Roman road to fit with the expanded timeline of empires.

I'd like to have a reference to Quarry still.  Or maybe Embargo, since it is also a $2 self-trasher.

@mith Hipster Mountain Pass is too long to fit.  Otherwise, yeah, obv.

You just need to define a symbol that stands in for "hipster" so it doesn't take up as much space. I recommend:(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/af/Prince_logo.svg/870px-Prince_logo.svg.png)

Belated +1 because of the "Roman road" suggestion.  I think I'd like to go with Gravel Road, where the gravel helps tie in with Quarry (and also Mining Village, which I now think may have been part of the inspiration for the Mountain Pass name as well since MV is also a self-trasher).  According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_surface#Gravel_surface):

Quote
Gravel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravel) is known to have been used extensively in the construction of roads by soldiers of the Roman Empire (see Roman road (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_roads))...

Applying gravel, or "metalling," has had two distinct usages in road surfacing. The term road metal refers to the broken stone or cinders used in the construction or repair of roads or railways, and is derived from the Latin metallum, which means both "mine" and "quarry".

I don't particularly object to changing the bottom of Mortuary to work on any non-Coppers, but it is a substantial boost to its power in Curse/Ruins games that maybe makes one hope that they get junked thereby indirectly punishing the junker quite strongly. Maybe have it work on cards costing $1 or more to include shelters and Poor House?

If Tinker is not accepted, I would suggest Charcoal Burner (Art: Tom Roberts)

Thanks King Leon! It's not as much that your name/art isn't accepted, but that I would like to have both cards. I tend not to have two fan cards with the same name and as LFN and 461.weavile already have a card named this I just prefered an alternative.

The art looks great, and I like the parraleslism between Charcoal Burner and Silver Smelter.

Thank you. I actually thought about Woodcutter, since the card is a Woodcutter variant, which can refine weak Wood (Copper) to better Charcoal (Silver).

The spirit of the name was the link to Envoy, since both are draw cards with another player having some control over what you can draw.  Portent or Augury would be getting at the other definition of Harbinger, not the one intended.

Open to other ideas, but my own suggestion will be Outrider.

Now this was brought up before, but I'll bring it up again. What do want the text to be? As-is I think it's too good, and weaker it might be too simmilar to Advisor.

I think that's something that I shouldn't decide myself.  Input from others (especially people who have actually tested it) would be appreciated.  Maybe try flipping the roles though?

Quote
+1 Action
Reveal the top 5 cards of your deck and separate them into two piles.  The player to your left chooses one pile for you to discard.  Draw the rest.

Maybe this is too similar to Advisor as well though, I dunno.

I had a card for $4 that said the same thing, without the +1 action. It was balanced at $4, so I am sure Harbinger will be balanced at $5. Maybe you can change it to split 6 cards rather thn 5?

I mean, than it's +1 Action, +3 Cards, with the downside that what you draw will always be average, because of the splitness.

Can your opponent see whats in the piles or are they guessing blind?

I assume that the opponent can see it, because it's revealed.

I'm assuming they can see.

They're revealed.  But I was just about to post this new version which I think would be super fun, but would also come with major risk of Analysis Paralysis:

Quote
+1 Action
Look at the top 5 cards of your deck and split them into two piles.  Reveal 3 of the cards.  The player to your left chooses one pile to put into your hand.  Discard the rest.

It could alternatively reveal 4 cards of the 5, if revealing only 3 is too strong.

@ThetaSigma, your paraphrasing is fine but it should say "chooses", not "choose".
