EDIT: Jay talks about the mechanics: https://boardgamegeek.com/article/21657662#21657662
A bit more to chew on: It has 300 cards and 96 metal tokens. There are cards you can buy now and pay for later, piles with two different cards, and Landmarks which add new ways to score. VP tokens and Events return from previous sets.
-
At this rate, we're going to have new expansions faster than MF can implement old ones.
-
Nice! Is it very irrational to hope for a release in 2016?
-
I still have yet to play Adventures... :(
-
Wow I'm so excited!
-
Jay posted the blurb about the set's mechanics on BGG. I added it to the OP.
-
time to become envious of people again :(
-
96 tokens is a lot. Prosperity only had 31 vp tokens and 8 coin tokens. So thats probably at least 2 new kinds of tokens.
-
Plural for the... fifth time in a row!
-
Oh wow. That must be the final expension for the third time ;)
-
time to become envious of people again :(
Yes indeed! A whole new Dominion expansion that you know nothing about! I am envious of the excitement you must feel already.
-
Now we just need to get another get-together going in the DC area so I can play with the cards before everyone else again. :D
-
Oh wow. That must be the final expension for the third time ;)
Point of fact, Adventures was never advertised as the "final expansion".
-

I'm not quite sure how you mean that, but the target as usual is April, though we will better know as we get closer as to whether or not we'll make it.
-

Point of fact, Adventures was never advertised as the "final expansion".
Neither was Guilds! Over and over I said that that was the last one planned, but that there would probably be another one someday.

And we're all glad there is!
-
Man, I've barely even gotten to play Adventures yet. Heck I still don't feel that comfortable with Guilds. So much new stuff to do. I need to play more Dominion I guess.
-
piles with two different cards
I actually had a similar idea back when we were doing the fan card contests. I can't remember if I actually submitted a version of it. Here's why I have in my card ideas document...
Secret Society
$3 - Action-Victory
+2 Actions. Worth 1VP.
When you trash this, you may trash any number of cards from your hand.
Setup: Add Secret Plans as an extra Kingdom card pile. Both this and Secret Plans must be empty to count as one empty pile.
Secret Plans/Plot
$3 - Treasure-Victory
Worth $1. Worth 1VP.
When you trash this, you may trash any number of cards from your hand.
Clarification: there are only 5 each of Secret Society and Secret Plans. They are separate piles so you can buy either one.
I didn't have them mixed together in one pile though. I think the design considerations for that would be very different. It'll be interesting to see how it compares to Knights. With Knights, they all share one major effect (The trashing attack) and then vary extra bonuses. But with just two different cards in a pile, you can design a bigger difference but with closer interaction. I wonder if these piles will be shuffled or if they'll be specifically ordered (5/5, or interleaved).

oh my (https://youtu.be/F-glHAzXi_M?t=1m11s)
-
I posted this in the avatars thread, in case anyone wants to use it.
-
I'm hoping for another Traveller line.
-
I never thought I'd see the announcement of a new Dominion expansion. Thanks mr. Vaccarino, I am feeling all giddy inside now.
The announced features sound very exciting and I am looking forward to what new things you've come up with. I am also excited to see what Landmarks are going to be. My guess is that it's going to be some kind of tracking card you gain and you can build it by fulfilling certain tasks and you gain VP by fulfilling single goals on that card.
-
Not sure if the release of this or adventures going online is more exciting.
-
Of course this is announced during the Cincy tournament! Quite excited, for a bonus reason! EDIT: looks like Donald already said it, I got to playtest this one :) Huzzah, more Dominion.
-
Why can't tournaments be on Tuesday afternoons, near Cleveland, so I don't need to use vacation time to attend? :(

Because then you would crush us all.

I'm only about an hour from Cleveland. If you want to meet up after work sometime, I'm game :)
On topic: Woo more Dominion! *looks at box* but I just fit Adventures in you!
-
Depending on how much stuff there is, I should be able to fit it in my new binders with the extra pocket pages left.
-
My 5000 card box is getting pretty full, with all the mats and tokens and such in there. I haven't even bought "Base Cards" or "Summon" yet.
-
EEEEEEEE!!!! This is one I actually got previews of and I'm SO EXCITED for some cards to hit the game!
But really not looking forward to some other ones... *cough encouraging people to be petty cough*
-
I'm excited, but sad at the same time.
Haven Having not had a chance to play Adventures online, I feel like when this comes out it's going to feel like overload, especially considering Adventures adds so many cards, and I have barely played with it and some of us have not played with it at all. One thing is for sure, Dominion will feel very different soon.
PS: Donald X. I have assembled a fairly large irl play group in Southern California, in case you are looking for another play tester in the future who plays with people in real life. Hint! Hint!
PPS: Let's start taking bets when this gets released online. Who thinks this will be out irl before Adventures is out online?
PPPS: I'm excited to see VP tokens return. I really hope coin tokens make a comeback as well. That is one mechanic that I feel has a lot of room to play around with.

It's seriously just a who you know when factor. I didn't get selected or anything (why would Donald trust someone with new cards who doesn't even have the old ones?), I was just in the right place at the right time. I still haven't seen all the cards either.
-
So... Stef, that tournament in the Netherlands, is that happening with some previews? ^^
Anyway: excited :D

How did you guys get on the Online play test group?

Read: certain playtesters have permission to playtest some cards with IRL people. Unsurprisingly, this tends to happen at announced meetups, but of course the presence of cards can't be announced in advance. So, go to a meetup and you might get lucky, especially since some playtesters' names are in this thread.
-
Also, I would bet real money that Empires will be at your FLGS before Adventures is online.
I wouldn't bet real money that the next expansion after Empires will be at your FLGS before Adventures is online, but I think there's a >1% of it being true.

I think it'll be called "Dominion: Hell Freezes Over"

An excellent point. I'd suggest moving here, but I wouldn't recommend anyone from pretty much anywhere in Europe come to the US. Maybe to Canada?

There's going to be a tournament in the Netherlands? When, where and how?

For the German translation. Please make sure they use the female grammatical form when there are "female" people in the art.
So far they've only done it with witches and very few other cards like duchess. But they used "Bäcker" instead of "Bäckerin" for baker, "Wildhüter" instead of "Wildhüterin" for ranger, "Geschichtenerzähler" instead of "Geschichtenerzählerin" for storyteller etc.
I really appreciate that Donald made sure there are more women in the art. But the (wrong) translation spoils it.

For me personally, this is just beyond the scope. Feel free to contact the German publisher and complain yourself... or the Hungarian publisher or Polish publisher or whoever.
-
I'm so glad this finally is announced, so that I can tell everyone that you all should get this expansion! I've been fortunate enough to get to play with some of the cards, and I think this might be the best Dominion expansion yet.

The Polish publisher did Base and Intrigue, then skipped to Cornucopia and hasn't done anything since. I'm pretty sure Hungarian has only done Base and Intrigue.
EDIT: I seem to remember there being a new Polish publisher, though.
-
In Russia they had Base and Intrigue translated, but recently they stopped printing Intrigue..
Not that I care too much about translated versions, but that just means less people are playing the game, which is obviously bad.
-

Isn't the new expansion always the best expansion? It consists entirely of things you're not (yet) familiar with.
Or do you mean that it's the best expansion yet, even taking that into account? In that case, that's a very tall order. And very hard to tell if you've seen only part of the expansion.
Sorry if this sounded too grumpy. It's okay to be super excited about the new expansion!
-
For the German translation wouldn't you have to contact RGG themselves though? Some time ago it was Hans im Glück who published the game here but that changed and it's RGG now.

Altenburger publishes the game in German now and that means they do the German translation.
At one point we gave them the big list of mistakes that the German forums people had compiled. It may have included gender mistakes; I'd have to check.

I don't agree with this. No one was calling Guilds the best expansion when it came out.
Anyway, my personal thoughts, this will be hard to top Adventures (mind you, I have hardly played enough Adventures). Adventures had the travellers. Also, Adventures seems to have more cards overall.
My prediction is that this will have 25 Kingdoms and 10 Events instead of 20 this time. We do get the return of VP tokens and the introduction of landmarks, so it seems this set will have a focus on alternative win conditions.
I guess we will have to wait and see how this compares to Adventures.
-
Here is my bold prediction for the set. With this seeming to emphasize an Empire and not just a kingdom anymore, I think we will get some very high end cost Kingdom cards. I'm thinking we will get a card that costs $10 or more, potentially cost even more than a Colony.
-
I think landmarks will be similar to events, in that they are single (not-)cards that will be added to the kingdom. They will hand out VP tokens for doing certain things like: "If you trashed at least 3 cards in your turn, +5 VP" or "If you didn't play any treasures in your turn, +3 VP". If this is the case, I guess 20 of these and 10 new events might be reasonable numbers.

Wow, that was a quick reply. I stand corrected on the publisher, I was misinformed.
While this thread has your attention: I don't know whether you can disclose this piece of information but do the translators also get the artworks for the cards in order to gain more context to translate or do they only get the transcript? I have been involved in helping out with translations in other games before and I have been wondering why so many mistakes are being made.

I know that HiG did at one point; I don't know if anyone does today. Well wait, didn't the French publisher leak a couple of tiny images for Adventures? Although, that doesn't tell us when they got them.

Judging by the French translations of the cards they seem to have had the images during the translations since they got the female Storyteller and Page traveler cards right and they could've only known if they had seen the images or if there were notes for them in the transcripts.
Well, I'll try contacting Altenburger about the proper genders in card titles, since I think it's safe to assume there are female characters again in the new expansion. I don't know how much that will accomplish since they will still need to get a little bit more information than only getting the transcripts of the card names and effects and I don't know how the relationships between publishers and their internal structures work to allow that. I hope that they handle the translations themselves and don't outsource it to another company at least.
Thanks for your replies though, I really appreciate how open and transparent you are about the things revolving around everyone's favourite board game. ;)

I'm only about an hour from Cleveland. If you want to meet up after work sometime, I'm game :)
On topic: Woo more Dominion! *looks at box* but I just fit Adventures in you!
1. My IRL boardgaming group meets on Tuesday nights. I don't think I could host a tournament then but you're welcome to stop by :-P (the next one is in April, I don't have a date yet but the store likes them on Saturdays at 1PM. Mark your calendar)
2. Ever since I knew there would be another expansion, I've been racking my brain trying to think of a way to fit all of the kingdom cards and one set of supply cards in my box. The conclusion I've come to is that I'm totally screwed. I can't think of any way I can fit all of these cards into one box with sleeves on them. Like, I just don't know what I'm going to do. Nothing I have seen out there will work.
There are storage solutions that are more expansible, but none of them will work with Fantasy Flight sleeves, and I'm not unsleeving my cards.
Maybe I should start another thread about this.
3. In any case, this expansion is going to be really, really awesome. It's really tough to compare it to other expansions right now (this whole Adventures/Seaside and Empires/Prosperity just doesn't ring true to me) but suffice it to say that getting good at Empires is gonna be really tough to do. For the first time, you'll actually see "bad" strategies start to become really powerful, which is something I don't know of expansions really doing before.

That is controversial. I was part of the fan team that helped proofreading the German translations for the Adventures cards (with others from the dominionblog.de forum). We had lots of discussion about exactly that question.
My personal point of view is, if there were female card names, it would sound like all bakers, rangers and storytellers were female in that time. This is a way of artificial gendering that I don't like. I see the image only as an example. The art is there to stimulate the players' fantasy and immersion, not as an exact "this is what you get". Making the gender of the art different to the gender in the title is the most elegant solution in my opinion, even if people get confused about it. I think it might cause more confusion if there were female card names.

It definitely is tricky to separate the novelty from the quality of the expansion. :) But I think I've played with enough of the cards (~90%) that I feel confident in saying that after accounting for novelty, it's between Empires and Adventures for best Dominion expansion so far. If you're a serious Dominion player, you won't be disappointed.
And I totally agree with Adam about the new strategic directions. It's gonna be fun to figure out how to play these cards right. I envy all of you who will get your minds blown by the previews. :D
-
I don't speak German, but isn't masculine the standard form of a job unless you're specifically referring to a woman?
In Italian, Baker (masculine form) makes sense even on a card picturing a woman since it describes people of both genders doing that job. (a "Bakers' association" would bear the masculine, for example)
Baker (feminine) makes me think the translator couldn't fathom the idea of a male baker, or that a male Baker has another card with a different effect. Or that I'm buying 10 copies of the same person.
It's not a matter of gender equality, but rather of grammar.
The big catch is, maybe German doesn't even work the same way.
-
It's gonna be difficult for me to discuss this in English and I'm not sure this is the right place to do it.
Just a few words:
if there were female card names, it would sound like all bakers, rangers and storytellers were female in that time. This is a way of artificial gendering that I don't like. I see the image only as an example. The art is there to stimulate the players' fantasy and immersion, not as an exact "this is what you get".
The way they name the cards now it sounds like all bakers were men. And we are not talking about the so called "neutral male plural form" which includes all genders.
"Baker" in English means "Bäcker" or "Bäckerin" in German. You don't know if the baker is male or female. So if you translate it you have to have a look at the context which in this case is the art. If the art shows a woman* you have to translate "baker" as "Bäckerin".
Making the gender of the art different to the gender in the title is the most elegant solution in my opinion, even if people get confused about it.
So that means we should give the male art female names and the female art male names?
-

I agree that this is the best expansion yet. I realize that is bold but I back it up by saying that this expansion is a huge game changer, literally. While Adventures changed the game with events it didn't turn the game on its head. Empires has cards that turn the game completely upside-down. Like Adam said, things you once thought were bad can now be good. Yet it all plays well with the other sets. I can't wait for this to come out!
-

The big catch is, maybe German doesn't even work the same way.
Most English job names are gender-neutral. There's no "bakeress" or whatever, so having a female baker on the art isn't inconsistent with anything.
In German, there is at least one instance of using both feminine and masculine versions of a word for a card: Wahrsagerin (fem.) was used for Fortune Teller, so Soothsayer had to be called Wahrsager (masc.) despite also having a girl on it.
-
Proposed solution: translate the card as "Bakery".
-
And let's look at a counterexample: Witch (and Sea Hag, and Young Witch, and Swamp Hag) specifically refers to a woman in English, and the art reflects that - it doesn't show a male witch. Donald could have just as easily called it a Warlock. This is the only instance I can think of in English where there isn't really a gender-neutral term for a "job", but then again, we don't have all that many witches nowadays. Now, languages other than English have explicitly masculine and feminine terms for a lot of things. If they're going to be considerate and translate Witch as feminine, I think it's perfectly fair that they translate cards as feminine if the art discloses as much.
-
When the gender is unimportant, you use the male form, for example "ich habe einen Termin beim Zahnarzt" ( I have a dentist's appointment)
Still I think it would be reasonable to use female forms if there's a woman on the picture.
@wero there's also duchess/ Duke and baron
-

It didn't have to be called Wahrsager, they could have gone with Hellseherin for example.

White baseball card boxes. Mine are all sleeved FFG just like yours. I know it's not sexy, but you could pretty up the boxes some same as a case. Then it's modular, but still extremely condensed. All sets (including Empires) fit in three of those things I brought Saturday.

White baseball card boxes. Mine are all sleeved FFG just like yours. I know it's not sexy, but you could pretty up the boxes some same as a case. Then it's modular, but still extremely condensed. All sets (including Empires) fit in three of those things I brought Saturday.
This was my first storage solution, before the big wooden box. I would really like something that fits in just one box. My extra sets of base cards and whatever are in one of those white boxes, which is OK to carry around in my big board game bag.

Binders with pocket pages, man. Very compact.
Re: Empires - I'm wondering how randomizers will work for the 2-card piles (which I haven't decided are shuffled up together, or separated) - will it be the way Knights are?

And also add 8 trillion pounds of weight (which I'm sure isn't a problem for some, but weight was half the reason I stopped my case, not space).

I think it will be like Knights. I don't think you'll pust random cards together in the same pile.

When I read it, I assumed it was basically Knights... if you include that Kingdom pile, you get a pile with 5 each of 2 different cards. But they could either be a) shuffled together like Knights; b) alternating so every-other card is different; or c) the first 5 cards are one thing, then the next 5 are the other.

Interestingly, Adam doesn't seem to hate them, so I guess the order won't be random.

I've seen storage solutions like this that I really like. I have never seen pocket pages that will accommodate sleeved cards, though. :'(
Interestingly, Adam doesn't seem to hate them, so I guess the order won't be random.
I have not disclosed my hatred or lack thereof for any of the cards or other things in this set. I should also say that I think I'm going to start carrying Knights in my IRL box and just make sure Dame Anna is always on the bottom of the pile. Someone suggested this to me and I think I like it. Read into this what you would like. I'll be very amused at the conclusions you can come up with.

You got to meet the real Dame Anna, and knew that you had found your one true nemesis?
-
I don't get how Dame Anna being the only trasher in a game is any worse/better than Dame Molly being the only Village or Sir Michael being the only discard attack.

Because you're going to lose Dame Molly and Sir Michael when you hit your opponent's Knight or he hits them, and then you will also stop benefiting from them. If you manage to trash even once with Dame Anna, you're going to be at a significant advantage for the rest of the game.

Donald X, or Jay, when are the previews going to be released? If you're allowed/willing/able to tell us that, of course.
-
I would imagine it will be the week prior to ship date. Adventures was previewed at the end of March & beginning of April.
-
Donald X, or Jay, when are the previews going to be released? If you're allowed/willing/able to tell us that, of course.
When I find out the expected release date, I will schedule the previews for a week earlier plus starting on a Monday; then if the set moves back a week or so the previews will probably stay where they are.
So as it stands, I expect late March, or April.
-
I still remember the day I got Alchemy, thinking I had finally completed my Dominion collection once and for all......
-
So excited for this!
I stopped playing online Dominion altogether about 14 months ago due to severe wrist tendonitis. So since then I have only played IRL Dominion, which naturally occurs much less frequently. Adventures really rekindled my interest in the game and Empires looks very exciting, taking the game in new directions. 2015-16 has been a surprisingly good time to be a Dominion fan, given that we expected the game to "end" with Guilds (at least for a long time).
I guess Adventures must have sold at least decently for them to do another expansion, which is also good news. I know that here in Denmark, several ordinary book stores sell Dominion and the various expansions.
-

there's also the fact that one non-drawing village usually isn't enough to make an engine, whereas one trasher can be all you need if the other pieces are there. especially if it trashes 2 cards and your opponent doesn't have access to it!
molly's main use is just allowing you to play more knights, generally. similar to festival, she's best in a money-ish game where you still want to play a bunch of strong terminals (what wandering winder terms "The Good Stuff Deck"). that's nothing to sneeze at, but a more limited scope of strength than anna's.
-
Clearly, the VP tokens must be what you get from destroying the Death Star with a Scout (maybe this expansion will allow for Wookies to also get VP tokens, instead of just humans).
As for the landmarks, well, landmarks keep you from getting lost. Therefore, once you have a Landmark, the Lose Track rule will no longer apply. Without losing track of themselves, people won't have to ask Jar Jar for directions, thereby allowing him to be permanently written out of the plot and greatly improving Episodes I-III.
Two of the greatest outrages in Star Wars history have now been fixed. Thanks, DXV!

You mean, 6 of these, black market deck including [ Tournament, any Looter, any spoils card, any potion card, Urchin, Hermit, either gain-from-trash card, Young Witch], both travelers, Knights, and Fairgrounds. (I probably forgot something), with Shelters, Platina and Colonies. Assuming a 25 card BM and all Ruins represented, if I'm doing my counting right, this gets us to a possible 85 uniques, or 34 point Fairgrounds.
And you still get outscored by a Goons engine.

It's probably likely that at least one of the two-in-a-pile cards (I hope there's a better, official word for these) will give out (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/9/92/VP.png/16px-VP.png) tokens in some way.

If there is a Traveller, I'd like to see a kind of Bureaucrat (not "Bureaucrat", since that name is taken already) who basically starts off as a low-level flunky, and works his/her way up to being a Vizier or Viceroy.
However, thinking about it, I doubt there will be a Traveller. With 25 Kingdom cards, and let's say 1 Victory Kingdom card, that takes up 252 cards, plus 25 randomizers. That leaves us with 23 cards left. These will probably be 10 Events, and 10-13 Landmarks, with the rest being blank cards. In order to accommodate a single Traveller, we'd have to lose 2 whole Kingdom cards to free up the 20 extra card space needed.
-
I hope there won't be blanks. Those could just be events or landmarks instead.
-
I doubt there would be a kingdom victory card when there are landmarks as a new way to score (via (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/9/92/VP.png/16px-VP.png)-Tokens I assume), so probably either 15 Events, 10 Landmarks or vice versa.
-
Perhaps not a Traveller, but a "Level Up" kind of card similar to how I think Thunderstone works...the first X cards of a pile (probably 5) would be a weaker version, and the bottom X are a more powerful version. This would be different from things like Forager and City that require cooperation to "build" since gaining cards from only that one pile matters.
-
I hope there won't be blanks. Those could just be events or landmarks instead.
I hope there won't be people complaining about blanks, as if good Events and Landmarks took zero time to create and test.

It's obvious that Landmarks aren't physical cards at all. They are real world places that you may visit to collect special powers via an app. At last, augmented reality is coming to Dominion gameplay!

This is what I'm thinking.
I think we get 26 kingdom cards which is 260 cards plus 26 randomizers for 286 cards plus 5 Landmarks and 5 Events. I think we will get 4 blanks.
I think we will only get 5 Landmarks since they give out VP tokens from the description. I also think to make Events feel more special we will only get 5-10 per expansion. This will help set Adventures apart from future expansions, also it makes sense for it to have more Events since it was the expansion to introduce them.
I think since we will have cards that give out VP tokens, we will not get an alt. vp card. Although, I hope I'm wrong. It would interesting if we had a vp card that gave out VP tokens perhaps from buying it or discarding it or trashing it...
Anyway, Prosperity gave us 3 cards that gave us VP tokens. I'm thinking we will have around 10 cards this time since I feel that will play a larger theme this time around since Prosperity was more focused on bigger and better and more expensive stuff.
-
I don't know if this has been said yet, but I have been thinking about these piles that have two cards in them. In order for players to get an even amount in a 3P game, the pile would need to be 12 cards, 6 of each card. Although, maybe having 5 works fine. I guess it really depends on how much you want the cards and also if the cards are shuffled, or if you have to buy your way through the top of a pile to get to a better card.
-
I think we get 25 cards, 10 Landmarks, 10 Events.

Kinda off topic, but Jay hints that the next expansion (after Empires) is already being worked on. :D
May want to break it up into 2 boxes. It may be blasphemy, but this really should provide a lot of much desired flexibility.
That's the way I'm leaning. But I'm guessing that as soon as I buy another box they announce a promise that there will not be any more expansions.
We will make no such promise - too many things already in the works.

I've always thought that would be pretty shark-jumpy. I think King's Court gives a satisfyingly different experience than Throne Room, but I'm going to claim that Imperial Court would play a lot like King's Court, except harder to buy and even more of a pain to track.
Same deal with uh Mega Expand, which would allow you to gain a card costing up to $4 more than the trashed card. Expand lets you go $2 → $5 → $8 (→ $11), which is way different from Remodel. I guess Mega Expand lets you go $0 → $4 → $8, but that doesn't sound like it would make for fun games.

Continuing with the theme of $4 cards that give you 2 of something, $7 cards that give you 3 of that thing and $10 cards that give you 4 of that thing, I think this is a pretty reasonable prediction for Empires:
Imperial Militia $10
Action - Attack
+$4
Each other player discards down to 1 card in hand.

So, the description mentions 96 metal tokens. I'm disinclined to think those are *all* going to be VP tokens, so that means we have tokens being used for other purposes. Are they used for Landmarks? Are Coin tokens returning (seems unlikely, since that would probably have been in the description)?
-

I believe I read somewhere that Landmarks produce VP. I think it is possible all of them will have some condition that when met makes VP for a player. Just a guess.
Anyway, Prosperity was sort of lacking in VP tokens. In games with more than 2-players, it was super easy to run out of tokens.
Anyway, I predict we will get a 10VP token, and I would not be surprised if they put extra tokens in this time to account for more players or games where a lot of VP is generated like Goons.
So, I think it's entirely possible we're only getting VP tokens, but who knows...except for the play testers...which seems to be a decent portion of this forum.
-

I really doubt there will be a 10 VP token. If there were a higher value, I think it'd be something like 20 or 25, since 10 only saves one extra token on your mat. It would feel like a waste of tokens to have a value so close to 5.

'Put your tavern mat on an Action supply pile' sounds like one of those markov chain generated cards

Guys there is a thread for this (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=114.0).
-
Man, I space out for a couple months and we have a new expansion and Dominion Online is gonna change hands again! Geeze.
-
Another guess: I'm going to wager that Ryan Laukat will contribute card art in this set, since he's done art for every single previous set, excepting Promos. Yes, that includes the new Base Cards (he did the Treasures). Also highly likely: Matthias Catrein (is basically synonymous with Dominion art, doing more than half of the base set, multiple box covers, and been art director), Alayna Lemmer, Claus Stefan, Harald Lieske, Julien Delval, Martin Hoffman (all of them have contributed multiple card arts, including for Adventures), and most likely Marco Morte (he did seven arts for Adventures, as well as Summon). Also Lynell Ingram will probably get in at least one - hopefully it will be more like Princess and Mandarin and less like Borrow. Oh, and Kurt Miller will probably have some CGI art thrown in there.
-
Claus Stefan
I believe Claus Stephan is the correct spelling.
-

I believe Claus Stephan is the correct spelling.
He has been credited both ways - in fact, Village is "ph" and Mine is "f". But the "f" spelling was used in Adventures. So... I'm all sorts of confused.

Good to know!
By the way, this prowling around artists led me to find Joshua Stewart's portfolio page, and the full-size art for his Adventures Events are just gorgeous:

It looks like jsh was right after all; Expedition has the best art.

You know, the Ides of March is a pretty Imperial date... it might have been fitting to get some sort of tease today...
-

Teasers will be the week before previews.
Anything I told you now would have to be completely useless, along the lines of "is there at least one card starting with an A," or "did Matthias Catrein do any of the art." It does not feel worth it to do the research to produce those useless pre-teasers.
-
As someone who's played probably about a third of the set, I think I might be able to spoil that um... there are cards that do things and other cards that do different things. I hope it's not too much information if I reveal that there are action cards, treasure cards, and victory cards involved.
-
there are action cards, treasure cards, and victory cards involved
I heard from my inside sources that there are cards that are 2 of those things at the same time.

There had better be an Emperor card. And a Darth Vader card.

I'm likely purchasing all of dominion and sleeving the cards soon, and this is my main worry, storing everything. Perhaps having 2 different boxes with room for additional cards (for future expansions) would be the best option. I imagine carrying all of the cards in one box is quite weighty as is.

Empires did not manage to move up. It might be a day or two early but that's it. That part is down to shipping.
So:
May 6th - Teasers
May 9th-13th - Previews
May 18th, or a day or two earlier at most - Empires
-
It's nearly here guyz

I'm trying to think of what you could be doing that would prevent internet access.
Will you be spelunking? Will you be in prison? In a submarine? On a reality show? On a corporate retreat for an internet provider? Is it a bdsm thing? Are you 7?

I'm going to guess: on the ocean (and unwilling to pay ridiculous rates for internet access if it's even available at all).
EDIT: If it were me, I'd read the previews first!

Whoa. I'm trying to think of a reasonable justification for installing a cave inside a submarine.

You could explore an underwater cave from a small submarine, but I'm trying to think of what sort of imprisonment would involve such an eventuality. Maybe he's filming a movie that requires all of the above?
But he could also be hiking somewhere without cell service, or maybe he's visiting a someone without internet in a place where his cell provider doesn't have coverage.

Don't worry, I will not hold it against you that that is what bothered you, instead of him doing BDSM at 7.

Maybe he is anticipating being grounded?

Relax, I'm just going on a 2.5-month long overseas missions trip where they will only allow us to go on the wifi every week. I'm not bringing my laptop or anything with internet capabilities, so I'm only able to use the community computer, and I decided that I'll probably just go on it to email my parents. I don't need to be connected to the rest of the world for 2.5 months.
-
I would read the previews first. They usually have good content (both dxv's and other peoples') and/or good entertainment value. Then you look at all the cards of the set and are a bit less overwhelmed.

Does anybody know a reliable place to pre-order the new expansion? I tried one for Adventures, but it didn't ship for a week after the release date.

Your local game store. I haven't contacted mine yet, but that's how I intend to get it.

"did Matthias Catrein do any of the art."
I think the more important question is, did Maura Kalusky do any of the art?

So I was on a cruise last week, and although I didn't pay for it, I thought the cost for internet was quite reasonable. $5 a day for basic access (which I think is limited to social networking sites). But something like $10 per day for full basic internet. I think $100 for the whole week got you the fastest plan.

Since Amazon sells stuff from 3rd parties, they tend to be prompt. So, May 18th. If you mean to pre-order, or Amazon specifically, dunno.

Alright. Thanks. I hope it'll be up for pre-order on there soon, but if not, two day shipping exists for a reason.
-
Last year, I waited for Amazon to put up Adventures. Other people sold it on there and shipped it themselves, but it was a couple of weeks at least before Amazon got it in to ship out themselves.
-
I already preordered Empires like a week ago. It's probably not worth doing it early though, because shipping costs are through the roof. I'd wait until later on.
http://www.miniaturemarket.com/rgg530.html
Preordered it there. There's a nice half-off sale, but you won't be getting much of a bargain because of like a $5-8 dollar shipping cost, at least where I am. I'm also concerned about the card backs being different again like in Adventures, but whatever.
Also, there's the awesome Donald X. introduction blurb on there too.
-
I'll just buy it in person the day it comes out. My FLGS had Adventures the day it came out, I have no reason to think they won't have Empires when it does.
-
I wish I had a FLGS. unless L is stretched to include a 45-75 minute drive. :(

I hope we get some cards that give +3 actions.

Yeah, and maybe some curse hybrids or something cool like that.

Donald, may I review your Empires cards for you, since I'm kind of pretty much the leader (besides ol' Palpy) of the greatest Galactic Empire known to man?
Dominion: Empires is more of a Roman thing. Plus I already have everyone signed up for doing previews. You could try to find someone to let you take over their preview though. I'd try Augustus first, then maybe Caligula's horse.
Donald has been mind-tricked into revealing some details! We now know that Dominion: Empires is more of a Roman Empire thing than a Galactic Empire thing!
-
So who wants to guess what the expansion decal will be? If this set is going to be Roman-y in theme, I'm thinking either an eagle, or something resembling that SPQR flag. Or maybe just a laurel wreath.
-

I would have guessed a generic flag, as something vaguely conquest-y. But a flag is now the reserved symbol for promos that aren't commemorating something special, e.g. Summon.
An eagle or a laurel would make sense. We can't be sure how Roman it actually is though. :P

Do we know what sort of release date May 18th is? Is it the date it's released to shops in the US? To distributors internationally, but not to shops? I'm trying to work out what chance there is that I'd be able to buy it in the UK the following week.

I think it will be a laurel or a sword.

I think it will be this:

Maybe Darth Vader should review the set then. :)

Donald already told me that I have to ask Caligula's Horse if I can reveal something. I'm assuming that's some kind of Rebel code though.

That is just not information I ever have. I will find out it's in UK stores when someone posts "I got it, also I'm in the UK!"

I have my email alert set up so I can order it when it arrives. All I need now is someone to blackmail into playing with me.

So, we're less than a month from release, and so far I haven't seen anything on Ystari or Dominion Welt or 999 Games about translations of Empires. For Adventures, there were translations announced well in advance.

Well this is unprecedented, but I'm not made of stone. Here are some spoilers about card layout.

- "They" is used instead of "he."
- +'s in the body of text are now in bold.
- Card texts are more carefully centered than ever before.

You may still run into problems if any of your friends are singular they deniers. Then again, you may want to reconsider your friendship with such people.

You jest, but the existence of such cards was not necessarily assumed.

Even I, almost always the grammar prescriptivist, have given in to the singular they. In conversation with a given person I'll use their preferred personal pronouns (which may include singular they), but generalized singular they seems to be the best compromise position for GNC folks.

Singular they has been grammatical for a long time and should be embraced for reasons wholly unrelated to the question of individuals' preferred pronouns (though those are great reasons too). If you find a pair of sunglasses on the ground, saying "someone dropped their sunglasses" sounds perfectly fine to almost all native English speakers.
-
Yeah, no one says "someone dropped his or her sunglasses". That would sound pretentious and stupid.

Not to mention, not everyone is a "his or her".

"Some bastard dropped some bastard's glasses"?
-
"Some bastard dropped some bastard's glasses"?
Maybe 'Some bastard dropped that bastard's glasses'. or 'Some poor bastard dropped that bastard's glasses'. Still ambiguity whether I'm referring to the same bastard, but context, tone, gestures, etc. can help that.

Militia
$4 Action - Attack
Each other player discards down to 3 cards in some bastard's hand.
I think a lot of people would discard the cards from your hand if you played this Militia against them.
-
Still, easily solved:
'Each other bastard discards down to 3 cards in that bastard's hand.'
Now you may get some pedants arguing that they aren't bastards so they don't have to discard. But, really, if they do that, then they're bastards.
-

I'm not sure there's a valid correlation between pedantry and whether or not your parents were married when you were conceived.

I've met a lot of non-binary people, but I've never actually met someone who prefers nir or xir. The most common pronoun by far is "they", followed by "I don't really care about pronouns", followed by "just pick whichever you feel like". I feel like with a few exceptions and edge cases, these are straw-men pronouns trumpeted up by TiA users to mock others.

It is May 4th, please, please, please....just a nibble!
Well this is unprecedented, but I'm not made of stone. Here are some spoilers about card layout.
- A bigger font is used on cards that don't have lots of text.
- "They" is used instead of "he."
- +'s in the body of text are now in bold.
- Card texts are more carefully centered than ever before.
What about the kerning? Is it good?
Unfortunately, Rio Grande doesn't make their own custom fonts.

May 6th - Teasers
May 9th-13th - Previews
May 18th, or a day or two earlier at most - Empires
So like, what time can we expect the teasers? Because it is like May 6th somewhere probably...
-
It's always May 6th somewhere.

In the morning, Pacific time.

"Someone dropped his, her, their, nir, or xir glasses" just sounds like you're taking the piss. "A pair of glasses have been dropped (by someone)"?

I know someone online who prefers xir, but the others just wanted they/their or didn't care. I didn't even know nir was an option.

Still, easily solved:
'Each other bastard discards down to 3 cards in that bastard's hand.'
Now you may get some pedants arguing that they aren't bastards so they don't have to discard. But, really, if they do that, then they're bastards.
I'm not sure there's a valid correlation between pedantry and whether or not your parents were married when you were conceived.
Technically your parents could have been married...to other people. And they probably were, you bastard. :)

At what point are people going to start questioning the legitimacy of this entire argument?

I think people IRL tend to go for the pronouns they think will be easiest for people to use vocally. The only person I know who prefers ne is a Canadian. They is a perfectly common singular pronoun in British English. It rarely leads to ambiguity and can always be fixed by rewriting the sentence.
Edit: Btw, I have no idea what TiA is. I literally got a load of medical web pages and urban dictionary told me it was some really cool girl.
Also, it's the morning of the 6th - is Donald a 6am riser? If so, it'll be very soon.

He's in Pacific time, so I'm assuming it will still be a few hours.

https://www.reddit.com/r/TumblrInAction/ IMO it's sometimes funny, and every once in a while has a good point, but most of the time is just pathetic.

Very first thread title: "If fat is attractive why don't fat women try to date fat men?"

As expected of people who go on Tumblr in order to post about it on Reddit.

TiA is basically the definition of manufactured outrage. Their content is a weird mix of lunatic fringe tumblr posts by edgy 14 year olds, completely fake tumblr posts by edgy 14 year olds, and Redditors actively looking for things to twist into an argument that offends them. Ironic if you don't think about it for too long, I guess.
If your views on identity politics or social justice issues are shaped by TiA, I would implore you to reconsider.

It just looks like a lot of straw men, and I can't really tell what 'side' of what 'issue' is being represented by a given post (or, really, what the issue is, or anything that is going on).

This is rapidly descending into RSP territory and maybe we should tell Thelma & Louise to veer left right about now.

I think the only thing that can steer this back on track is Empires previews.

Thanks. Has there been any news about a UK release?
That is just not information I ever have. I will find out it's in UK stores when someone posts "I got it, also I'm in the UK!"
OK, thanks. I'll try to remember the correct wording when I get my copy.
I got it, also I'm in the UK!

I originaly did not want to upvote spiralstaircase's post, but seing your struggle I did that, so it is now like you upvoted twice or something

Wow, cool to see how many of these predictions actually proved correct.
