Forager, Market Square, Shanty Town, Swindler, Urchin, Feodum, Scavenger, Scout, Duke, Torturer
I love games where my opponent goes for the tried-and-true strategy and it loses to an unconventional counter. It's easy to build a Torturer engine here, but I realize that Curses gained to your hand are just Forager food. So I ignore Torturer and instead buy 8 Foragers. My favorite part is when my opponent trashes Gold for me. Pure gravy.

I have a vague memory of a multiplayer IRL game where the only +buy was salvager, and I was drawing my deck every turn.  I was happy when I got some curses, otherwise I'd have to trash something useful to get the +buy.  Seems like the same story.

I don't know if it could really get rolling, but Torturer-blasting, and then playing a Mercenary could be pretty devastating.

EDIT: or even just an Urchin instead of a Merc would be easier to do, and almost just as good.

Very true! Even a single Urchin would have been great for him.

It seems like this should be an Urchin opening. Given the Shelters, I am unsure whether it should be double Urchin or Swindler-Urchin, though without Shelters you'd want the Swindler. Mercenary handles incoming curses from Torturer well, and Urchin/Mercenary combine well with a Torturer chain as previously noted.

Man, the Swindler/Urchin vs double-Urchin debate comes up a lot lately. :P
