Title: How many sleeves do I need?
Post by: Chris is me on May 07, 2015, 11:46:58 am
Couldn't find this by searching (quickly), and I figure it's a common enough question to go here?

How many sleeves do I need to buy to sleeve every single regular card (including one set of Base Cards, not including any randomizers)? [EDIT: I think the answer to this is 2,576?]

How many sleeves do I need to buy to sleeve just the Base Cards plus the cards used in a single game? How few could I get away with if I didn't sleeve literally every Copper, etc?

I counted 2794.
That's all the Kingdom cards (including Promos), one set of Base Cards, all the Base/special cards from expansions (Platinum, Potion, Prizes, Ruins etc), no Events, no randomisers.

I don't really see how you can get away with sleeving some of them, but not all of them, given that sometimes even the Copper pile runs out.
Unless you specifically mean not sleeving the second set of Base cards from Intrigue.

(Edited because I forgot to add Prizes).

For sleeving "every" card, I figured I wouldn't sleeve the second set of Base Cards as I pretty much never use those, and I'm trying to save a bit of money. I.e. what's the minimum amount of sleeves you need to be able to play a four player game of Dominion of any kind without having to put unsleeved cards in sleeves. Does 2794 include the Intrigue base cards?

I'm also curious how many sleeves are needed if only the Base Cards (including Platinum, Potion, Ruins) are sleeved and the remaining 100-120 Kingdom cards are sleeved before the game begins (or as the game goes along). It's a time investment but something I'm considering while I try out the idea of playing with sleeved cards.

I can probably figure this out later as well, just wondering if anyone had that info handy.

Make sure you have some spares.  (You probably will)  Even the best sleeves break now and then.

I'd suggest 3000 sleeves. This will be enough for everything with a few extra. It may even be enough for two sets of base cards.

(I have the actual count on my computer)

Okay, going by the numbers on the Wiki and assuming maximum sleeving (Including Trash and Events, but not Randomizers or Blanks)

Dominion: 461
252 Kingdom
208 Basic
1 Trash

Intrigue: 467
258 Kingdom
208 Basic
1 Trash

Seaside: 262
262 Kingdom

Alchemy: 138
122 Kingdom
16 Basic

Prosperity: 274
250 Kingdom
24 Basic

Cornucopia: 137
132 Kingdom
5 Other (Prizes)

Hinterlands: 266
266 Kingdom

Dark Ages: 465
362 Kingdom
103 Other (Spoils, Ruins, Mercenary, Madman, Shelters)

Guilds: 130
130 Kingdom

304 Kingdom
60 Other (Travellers, Events)

Promos: 60
60 Kingdom

Base Cards: 249
248 Basic
1 Trash

3273 If you sleeve everything. (Includes 3 sets of basic cards)

2794 If you sleeve one basic set and ignore events and Trash.

Two, unless you're an amputee.

Depends on the board temperature.

You need finitely many.

I think sleeving events is wise

I think sleeving events is wise

Why?
They aren't subject to in-play wear like other cards.
If you use them according to the letter of the rulebook, they only ever get shuffled when you use your randomiser deck then left on the table for the duration of the game.
For many of us they won't even see that much action because randomiser apps are much easier to use than the giant randomiser deck.

People touching them. Fingerprints. Consistency, etc. Plus there will be eventual wear. Obviously they aren't getting shuffled but it keeps them nice. Oh and you only need 20 sleeves for them.

Man, you spill one drink and your whole outlook on life changes.

I'm going to sleeve mine, but the original question made it clear that they were trying to minimise sleeving and Events seem like an obvious choice to leave unsleeved. But, yeah, for the sake of 20 sleeves it's probably not worth it.

As for spilling drinks, I'm not convinced that sleeves would help protect against that. I feel that if anything sleeves would trap moisture against the card.

I've seen what happens to Dominion cards when a drink is spilled on them in the heat of battle. When unsleeved, there is permanent damage to the card, enough that you can tell when looking at the back of the card. When sleeved, no moisture gets on the card, and I only had to replace 5 or less sleeves, even when the drink is spilled in the middle of the kingdom piles. I was unconvinced until seeing this, but I'll never go back.

But if spilling drinks isn't the reason why the cards are getting sleeved, then sure, maybe it doesn't matter. That's just the reason why I sleeve my cards.

I don't know about Dominion cards, but with Magic cards and drinks, an unsleeved Magic deck gets completely ruined when a drink is spilled over it. When it's sleeved, the bottom or top card might get damaged, but most of the cards survive with no damage.

I have a friend with a deck with a whole bunch of crazy expensive cards (foil Planeswalkers, etc.) so he double-sleeves them. Apparently there are some sleeves designed for that, so that whatever would happen to an ordinary sleeved card instead just happens to the inner sleeve and the card stays safe.

While it's still not a good idea to spill drinks around playing cards, I think if someone spilled a drink, you'd much rather the cards be sleeved. It is a bit harder for the cards to get wet, and fewer cards will get soaked, and with a new sleeve a soaked card isn't totally unplayable anymore.

I know some people who double-sleeve their cards in order to fully seal them - they use a penny sleeve inside a real sleeve. Not sure if that works with commonly available Euro size sleeves, but maybe it does. Not a huge deal for me, really.

I ended up getting 500 sleeves, so I can sleeve all my Base Cards, plus then I'd have enough for up to 11 Kingdom cards, all the Ruins, and a bunch extra in case a clumsy player rips up a sleeve when removing / adding cards to them. In many cases I could sleeve two Kingdoms in advance to speed things up a bit too. I'm going to try and see if I prefer playing with sleeves enough to invest in the Hobby Lobby box, wood dividers, a dremel, etc. Maybe I can make use of dramatically inefficient resources and 3D print dividers for the box.

Thanks for your help everyone :)

[Edit: I don't see the point in sleeveing Events. Who cares if my cards are damaged, they're not collectible. The only reason damage matters is if people can cheat and track their deck via card damage / if cards get gross and stick together, which don't apply to Events]

I think I will sleeve my Events and institute a no open containers policy!

Man, just get a card table with recessed cup holders so no drinks are ever on the table surface.

Sleeves do prevent the wear on the cards from showing, and some Dominion cards are used more than others, so they wear differently. That's why I sleeved. I just went with the cheapest sleeves; every once in a while a sleeve will split, but I have plenty of extras.

Buying a replacement set is always an option if something disastrous happens or you get a lot of use out of the cards.

It's always funny when I place a stack of Feasts on the table and a new-ish player asks "Why are these so much shinier than the others...?"

Aaaand that's why I don't let people have drinks around my dominion cards...
