Title: Getting cards
Post by: GendoIkari on April 27, 2015, 12:41:24 pm
When I talk about getting cards, I'm referring to what your deck looks like at the end of the game, and the ways that those cards got to your deck in the first place.

I find it interesting that before Adventures, there were only 2 possible ways to get a card: Gain it, or be passed it via Masquerade. I'm not missing any, am I?

But Adventures adds not 1, but 2 new ways to get cards. The exchange mechanic, which puts a card in your discard pile without gaining it, and Inheritance, which gets you a card that you can't actually use, without gaining it. Though that card can't ever be in your deck during the game, it DOES count as being in your deck at the end of the game, for Gardens and Fairgrounds.

*Edit for the full list*:

Gaining
Passed via Masuqerade (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Masuqerade)
Exchanging
Returning Fortress (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Fortress) to your hand after trashing it (and also with via Lurker (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Lurker) you can get one without having ever gained it).
The card you set aside via Inheritance (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Inheritance)
Returning trashed cards do your discard pile via Possession (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Possession)
Exiling a card from the supply with Coven (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Coven)

Make a Dominion mod where everyone starts with 0 cards.  Your opening buy choices are Copper or Curse.

Edit: Or whatever with Adventures possibilities.

I'll use my Baker token to buy a Poor House, then buy a Tournament, then a Baker, then two more Bakers, then a Province, and get Followers.

Well some boards would display a pretty big first-player advantage!

That's not legal, you don't have two buys on T3. However, Travelling fair/squire/poorhouse on T3 is legal and also works.

Poor House, Procession, Procession your Poor House (gaining CSM) = Province

So that's 3 turns.

You can only do that if it's in the supply and the pile is not empty.

Alternatively, you can use Mine to gain it in-hand.  That's when you go to your friend's house, grab his box of Adventures, declare, "Mine!", and run out.

And if the set hasn't been played with yet, it should still be in Mint condition.

Well Mine is in Mint condition because I've played with them both about the same.

True, but I had to run my Poor House into the ground to get it. I think that answers the "Damn Socialists" objection in a sufficiently Dickensian fashion?

As Kirian pointed out in another thread, Fortress provides another way to get a card; though you first have to have gotten it by one of the already mentioned ways. But when you trash it, it's not in your deck at all for a moment, until it goes back in your hand; which puts it back into your deck without gaining it.

Does all of your cards coming back to your deck no matter where they are (like say Tavern mat) count?  They're not in your deck, but they do seem to be your cards still.

New additions to the list!

Lurker/Fortress allows you to get a Fortress directly from the supply without ever gaining it.

And as pointed out by Jeebus in another thread, Possession actually returns any trashed cards to your deck, while they were very temporarily removed from your deck. Like Fortress though, you must have already gained/gotten the card previously in order for this to work.

So what then happens to the Fortress?  If I'm understanding correctly... it isn't gained, so it doesn't go into the possessor's deck.  And it isn't trashed from the possessed's deck, so it shouldn't "return" to their deck.  Does it go back to the supply?  Does it stay in the possessed person's deck, simply because it has nowhere else to go?  Does it lose track in any way?

Well a trashed Fortress goes directly into the hand of the person who trashed it (which is always the person who had it to begin with). The only way that Possession interacts with this is that the possessing player can choose the order of Possession's when-trash and Fortress's when-trash, and whichever he chooses first, the other loses track and does nothing.

If he chooses Possession's when-trash, then Fortress is no different than any other card that's trashed on a Possession turn. It temporarily stops being yours when you are forced to trash it, but then when you set it aside, it becomes yours again, by the rule from Inheritance that says that a card that's set aside by you becomes yours.

Doesn't the game officially begin AFTER the setup?  If so, then those cards were always there, and not really "gotten".  If so, then buying your copy of Dominion would be another way ;)  Or winning promos at a con

Half the card-shaped things that use the exiling mechanic can exile a card from the supply: Camel Train, Transport, Invest, Coven, Enclave, Way of the Camel, Way of the Worm.
