Title: Demographics of F.DS
Post by: biopower on December 30, 2011, 04:42:52 pm
A comment in the thread about recorded Isotropic games and horrible American accents led me to wonder, where do all of our players come from? I don't want anything more specific than country of residence, as I just want an idea how diverse we are.

I'll go first: I'm an Asian that lives in the US.

A white American, born and bred.

Maybe this is better as a poll?  Also, theory has time zone data from the tournament entrants, which should be a decent sample.

Well, time zone data will give you some longitudinal information, but it's a good bit more ambiguous that country in a lot of cases... US being a decent exception (though there you can have like Canada and some parts of Latin America). But in Europe... lots of countries in only a handful of time zones.
Wait, how many time zones fit in your hands?

US, BTW

Hungary, EU

I've been wondering about this myself, good thing someone brought it up, although I think most of the players and posters here are from the US, but it would be nice to see some statistics about it. :)

UKish here, obviously.

I was actually going to do something like this before but I wanted to ask many more questions but theory couldn't find a suitable multi-poll mod for the forum software so I didn't bother in the end.

Grew up in north Jersey, went to school (both undergrad and grad) around Philly, currently splitting time between Philly, NJ, and NYC as I try to find a job.  I like the Northeast, we have four seasons and decent public transportation.

gl. Any chance I could know what county you grew up in? If you don't feel comfortable posting it you can PM. I'm currently growing up in Morris county.

I like it!  I live on the other side of the mitten in Holland.  For those Dutch people out there, it's pretty much the most dutch place in the united states.  :)

I have a brother in Flint, and a brother in law in Holland, I think.  Is Holland near Grand Rapids?  If so then I'm pretty sure that's where the brother in law is.

I'm in Tennessee myself in case you couldn't tell from the accent I type in.

I would have been a Michigander, but you guys lost/won the war with Ohio in 1835.  At least, I think getting the UP's iron and copper in return for losing Toledo counts as "winning" for Michigan.  I did live in Ann Arbor for 7 years though.

For the Michiganders, I'll plug ConFusion--not a gaming convention per se but lots of gaming there along with the SF/Fantasy stuff.

Bunch of Ann Arbor people, too? I went to college there. I have lived in Michigan my whole life, except for a summer internship in Washington DC, and a fall internship in Arizona. I live on the East Cost (of Michigan) now, near Detroit.

The poll makes no allowance for the Republic of Ireland.

Nor Iceland, Cyprus or Malta!

The term "continental Europe" is misleading in this way, since I think it just means in this case "non-UK Europe", even though Ireland is more closely related to the UK than the old central European powers.

What about the hundreds of millions in Indonesia and many other 'island nations' most certainly don't live in 'Australia / New Zealand'? Point is, yeah, the poll's not perfect. But unless you're from one of those places, I wouldn't worry too much

I think Cyprus and Malta count as Continental Europe.  Both are as close to the non-island portion of Europe as Crete is to mainland Greece, and closer than Sardinia, Corsica, or the Balearics, as well as closer than Key West is to Florida.  Alas, poor Iceland, though.

At the same time, the poll also leaves no room for the Pacific Islands (e.g. Fiji, Tonga)

All that said:

I have edited the poll after educating myself with this informative Euler diagram on the differences between England, Great Britain, United Kingdom, and British Isles (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/28/British_Isles_Euler_diagram_15.svg).

Which might be changing soon if Scotland get independence...

People constantly referring to the UK as "England" piss me off to no end... although I didn't know that British Isles and British Islands were distinct terms.

I'm from France. Studying in Paris, but right now working in Le Havre over the summer (yeah, the city from Rosenberg's game. It's about as exciting as the game makes it seem).

You drink Scotch. You drink with the Scottish.

Well... but the Scotch Game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotch_Game) and Scotch Gambit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotch_Game#Scotch_Gambit) are Scotch, not Scottish.... and yes, they're named after Scotland - d4 having been played by Edinburgh against London. Which leads me to believe it's a bit more complicated than that.

When someone is similar to Scott, but not entirely, he is Scott-ish.
