Title: The Haiku Card Challenge
Post by: Witherweaver on March 26, 2015, 05:41:20 pm
So counting words in this thread (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=12802.0) reminded me of counting syllables in haikus, and I thought, why not explain what a card does in a haiku?  Because that would be awesome, right?

For clarity, "haiku" is meant to be American haikus in English, the standard 5-7-5 structure you learn about in elementary school.

As many people use the word, a "haiku" is expected to involve a seasonal reference and a juxtaposition. Without those elements, what you've got on your hands is a senryū. Hey, it's a living language; on internet forums these days, "haiku" has come to include senryū for many people. Still, why not take on the additional challenge of making full-on haiku?

It's not even ha-i-ku in Japanese, if the sound clip on Wikipedia is correct.  It's definitely not 3 syllables in English.

It's not even ha-i-ku in Japanese, if the sound clip on Wikipedia is correct.  It's definitely not 3 syllables in English.

So, spelled phonetically, it's three "syllables" (はいく), but pronouced in Japanese, it's definitely "HAI" and "KU".  If you were to say "HA" then "I" then "KU" I don't think any Japanese speaker would understand that you meant the poetry, and would most likely think you were talking about taking a hike (ハイク).

That said, I don't know the rules for using the word haiku in a haiku.

Okay, looked it up.

The rule for haiku in Japanese is to count the on (音) in each line.  Counting on is just counting the phonetic spelling of all the characters, so in the case of haiku (俳句), you'd write it out as はいく and it would count as three on.

So, in that sense, sudgy was "correct."

HOWEVER -- given Witherweaver's haiku was written in English, I think you have to go with the syllable count as pronounced, and keep it at two.

Man, eHalcyon. Not everyone in this forums is a native english speaker and thats fine.

I am proud to speak five languages more the less fluently, but only in my mother language i have something like a sensible feeling for the nuances of the language. I learned a lot of different poems and metres in school, but in my cultural circle haiku is none of em. I assume in Burning Skull`s neither. So, a little bit more patience would be fine.

I don't think I've been harsh in pointing it out.  In the case of Burning Skull's three, none of them were even close, so I literally wasn't sure if he was serious.  If you don't know what a haiku is, it's easy to find out online.  Is counting syllables really so difficult for non-native English speakers?

For the record, English is technically not my first language either (though it is my most fluent).

For me I can say, yes you are right, i could have informed myself what a haiku exactely is. I just was lazy and assumed its a short poem with three lines.  I dont think either you were harsh but neither inviting. I like the way, Witherweaver did it. He explained haiku after recognizing that not everyone get it right.

Fair enough. :P

@Witherweaver, I know that modern Japanese haiku has moved away from counting, but the 5-7-5 structure is still the traditional format that people commonly think of when talking about haiku.

Also, the 5-7-5 in Japanese isn't really syllables. It's letters, though each letter in Japanese is generally an entire syllable. But, for example, Gendo, (more properly spelled Gendou), would be 3 syllables, not 2.

But Gendou would be げんどう, which is four letters...

Terminal Silver
can move your deck to discard:
Time to reshuffle.

Smithy
Net gain of two cards,
but actions may be drawn dead
with terminal draw.

Militia
Gives you two money
and makes opponents discard
to a three card hand.

Feast
Gains $5 card
just once; after you will find
a Feast in the trash.
