Title: Should we revive the front page with high quality content from the forum?
Post by: rrenaud on February 11, 2015, 03:06:29 pm
Maybe we should take the best strategy post each month on the forum and throw it up on the DS front page?

There's a front page??

Sounds like a great idea. We should maybe even add some posts retroactively.

I am not sure off the top of my head whether there's enough strategy article-type content for this to work (there may well be, but I'd have to look). But I miss the front page, so I'm on board.

I say we just propagate the top Message of the Week!

There are a ton of articles (like my article on Jack) that have been made since articles were posted on the front page. Perhaps we can put those up?

Seems like a nice idea, because right now the front page may suggest that the community is dead, with the last entry more than year ago.

I read the front page for a few weeks before I ever sought the forum. I did not know it was disused. I think it should be used.

With a card teaser!

You could announce the new expansion.

Is that really the smallest font available?

Absolutely. My bookmark is still to the blog rather than the forum. I am saddened that it hasn't been updated in a while. There is still good stuff happening on the forum, even in the articles section.

Yes, keeping the front page is important, especially for those doing a search online. It shows that our community is alive, and well, not everyone visits discussion forums.

And, Donald is right. The front page should have an announcement about Adventures

You know when you have a colleague with whom you interact every day for months on end until you find him at a party and suddenly realize you don't know his name and now it's kind of too late to ask?

Announcing the new expansion on the blog now feels a bit like that, I'd say.

Besides, everyone and their mom (their Dominion-playing mom) already knows about Adventures. Strategy articles are much cooler and unique to this community. To jump-start the blog revival, one thing you could do is take the current article-of-the-month from the wiki and put it up there.

To me, even announcing it late is good, because right now, if you do know about the expansion, it looks like the blog is dead, and if you don't, it's not telling you about the new expansion.

Re: awkward name-asking, find a reasonable excuse to ask for their name.  They might feel a bit hurt, but they will (probably) tell you anyway.  Then you can say, "no, I meant your last name".  And then they'll probably feel better about it.

Especially if you smile conspiratorially as you say "No, I mean your LAST name".  It will help sell the notion of "of course I know your FIRST name, we work together dude".  A smile makes a lot of things possible, even probable.

Oh, I do that so much...  I rarely even use names anyway, unless there's a bajillion people and they're far away and I need their attention.

Also, I like this method: "How do you spell your name again?"  "Uh...  T-I-M?"

To which you obviously reply: "Huh, who would have guessed? I had always been told there was no "I" (http://lulzshirts.com/sites/default/files/user_uploaded/no_i_in_team.jpg) in there."

Man, just hang around them enough, they'll have to introduce themselves to someone eventually!

- Some sort of icebreaker event, get everyone to introduce themselves.
- Get them to sign a card for somebody.

A worse problem is if you forget their name again, after re-learning it the first time.

Here's an idea. Pick someone active on the wiki. Werothegreat? Give them the ability to put stuff on the front page. Bam, the front page will have news. Man right now there's:

- New expansion April 8th. You missed mentioning this but then there was new news, the actual date. Still not on the front page of a Dominion blog.
- This Steam Greenlight business with the online version.
- News about the target date for the new online version.
- Pornographic Japanese Dominion doll, how is that not news.

Somehow I doubt there's a point to posting now about the Dominion Online target date.

To paraphrase Douglas Adams, the great thing about Dominion Online target dates is the lovely "whoosh" noise they make as they go flying past.

I think links to videos of games (like, the narrated ones) would also be potential front page candidates if the game is interesting enough.  Or some of the boards/logs people post when they lead to interesting discussion.  Could have a sort of "game highlight" series of blog entries.

An easy post to make would be to link to the videos for each League Champion match, and of course I'm in favor of anything that sends more people to my YouTube channel :-P

While I was surprised and flattered to see my Beggar article get more love (especially considering I haven't been very active here lately), I unfortunately have to point out that it was already featured on the blog (http://dominionstrategy.com/2012/11/19/dark-ages-beggar/) about 2.5 years ago. How about shark_bait's 10 cards to victory?

http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=11851.0

It's the type of article that would go better on the blog rather than the wiki because it is not card-specific and people can debate which 10 cards should go in the list. And it's a fun read.

I think some of the highlighted games should go there.. I remember a post by maybe Stef or Wandering Winder about a particular game they played and some issue that is often overlooked (maybe related to deck tracking in some way?) ended up being quite important.

Something along those lines.. a particular board, log, and some analysis that may talk about an advanced Dominion topic.

More seriously, would it be possible for an IT!whizz to mirror the discussion happening in the blog into the forum, and viceversa? It's way more inconvenient to follow the comments in the blog than here, and I don't know how much visibility they have.
