Title: Forum downtime
Post by: theory on February 03, 2015, 06:19:16 pm
I'll be taking the forum down for about 20 minutes in about 24 hours.

If you have a life-support system hooked up to the forum, please look into alternative arrangements.

Thank you for telling that in advance.
The time was just enough to rewrite all Scout, Mine and           jokes on paper!

Given that the forum's been having issues all day I'm just going to go ahead and do this now.  See you on the other side!

Though seriously if you could all let me know if the forum is better or worse that'd be great.  In my experience it feels approximately a million billion times faster.

I was having serious problems getting onto the forum yesterday (Thursday) before the reboot thing. Mean loading time was about 15 seconds (although it took about 2 minutes to open 1 page), it's now completely fine, everything is loading immediately.

I assumed he was using Goko/MF loading times as the benchmark.

Not a huge amount.  I only really notice problems when the previews are very new.

This.  The whole forum slows down as everyone tries to post in the preview threads... then back to normal a couple hours later.

It went down again just now!  Frustratingly (and also not frustratingly), as I was trying to fix it, it fixed itself.  Like, literally it said, "ALL YOUR MESSAGES ARE GONE", and as I was panicking and trying to figure out what it meant, and how I could make it not be true, and fix it, it then decided "ACTUALLY JUST KIDDING HERE IS YOUR FORUM".

I will never understand how this forum works.

All I'm gonna say is that if the site goes down as new Empires Previews are posted, there will be hell to pay.

Debt is hell, and you have hell to pay. Plus, red hexagons just scream Lucifer. It's not a pentagon, but it's close enough for me. Dominion: Empires also has a Roman theme, and Nero was a Roman Emperor, who is considered to be a big candidate for the Antichrist. Also, if you squint and look at the Dominion: Empires box, you can see this...

ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED.

I hate jinxing myself but I'm pretty sure I fixed it.  Whew.

The cute folksy analogy is that a French robot and a Chinese robot were constantly trying to get through a door labeled "xmlrpc.php", because they heard that behind that door they would get unlimited power.  In reality there's nothing behind that door, but their constant knocking and distractions made it difficult for us to respond to actual guests going through the actual front door.  So I built a wall in front of the xmlrpc.php door.

I'm glad to see the forum up again.  I am curious as the reason for the downtime events, as there have been a few during the short time I have been a member.  I see that the static HTML portion of the website is up during these events. It's only the dynamic PHP pages that have issues.   When I've had such issues on web sites I've run, it related to one of 3 things -- a never ending script/program, a short burst of traffic from publicity such as a radio show mention, or bots.  I once had tens of thousands of bots trying to sign up on a forum in a period of less than a minute.  I had to IP block a good portion of China until I figured out how to prevent it.    Feel free to not answer, if you'd prefer.  I appreciate the forum and do not mean to be offensive.   Instead I am curious and also hoping some one here might have ideas for preventing future issues.

I remember there was one motivational-style meme that kept getting reposted and recaptioned, like one original picture with a caption, then the whole thing (with the caption) got an additional border and caption under it, then all of that got another border and caption around that, and on and on and on until finally someone did one where it was two stick figures looking down into this abyss of captioned captions, and one of the stick figures pushes the other one in.

The forum. It was down. I would happily help pay for the forum to not be down on the weekends. Start a Patreon, Theory!

I'm sure this is the last thing theory wants. It's a forum he runs in his free time, and paying him will only create an obligation for him to immediately drop everything and fix the forum, which is unfair to expect from someone who is doing this in their free time.

Fundraising for infrastructure improvements, if those are needed to keep the forum stable, are one thing. Like if the problem is that the web server is 100 years old and keeps going down, hey we could all chip in for a new one! I don't know enough about why the forum keeps going down to speculate one way or another here.

I agree that fundraising to give Theory money to work on the forum more would not produce the desired outcome and would just generate ill will.

Not to pay Theory. I want a better server, if that is the problem.

Yeah I'm with this one.
theory would know better than anyone what the issues are.  But if theory does think that the issues would be fixed by a new server or something then I'd be happy to contribute.

Let's see whether theory actually thinks this is a good idea before we starting raising the dough, eh?

That's not a problem.  If that computer is 100 years old, it should be worth a small fortune to people studying time travel or alien tech.

Not necessarily; it could have spent some time in a time loop (a la Primer) and exited without retaining any of the technology that went into making the loop.

Spoiler: Theory has actually been trying to change the post count names for years, but every single time he does, the forum crashes until it goes back to the old way. "You can pry the Adventurer title from my cold dead hands!" the server echoes, overheating to the point of melting all backups of the forum's contents.

Amongst the many awkward things that this new edition introduces, it means that these post count titles make little sense now.

Maybe we could do some polls in the general forum as to which titles people want to see?  If you don't feel like picking new ones yourself, that is.

How do you think I feel?  I might need a new username now.
Library (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Library)Ranger (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Ranger)?
Library (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Library)Explorer (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Explorer)?
They just don't have the same ring to them...

EDIT: There is still the expansion title. I could be Library (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Library)Adventures (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Adventures), but that makes me not a person (then again, there is someone else here known as "chairs").
EDIT2: Library (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Library)Venture (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Venture)? eh, not too bad...
EDIT3: I thought I'd go with Library (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Library)Venture (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Venture), but it seems you can't change your username. I'm going to be stuck being a dead card. It's like half of my forum (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/forum) identity no longer exists.    :-[ :'( :'( :'(
EDIT4: ...I could make a new account but then I couldn't modify the OP in my Resurgence thread...   :'(

...Well, it has new wording. I don't see how it's much better than the old wording. I'm indifferent.

Let's make a bet.  I bet that the forum won't go down for the rest of the year.  I'm fairly confident in this.  If I lose I'll have to play ten games of 4p base Dominion with the house rule that playing a Village, buying a Village, looking at a Village, or thinking about Village gives you +1 VP token.

If I win you all have to give me unlimited power over this forum.

Deal?
